I was just taking a lot of pictures, Maki said. So when I decided to enter the contest, I had to enter the one I thought was the best. And it turned out pretty well. Maki s fast photography work earned him top prize in the National Park Foundation s 2011 Share the Experience photo contest. His winning photo will grace the 2013 Federal Recreational Lands Pass distributed to nearly 500,000 people. It is the rst time a national forest will be featured on the interagency pass. Maki, a captain with the Kern County (Calif.) Fire Department, also won a four day/three night trip for four people to a National Recreation Area of his choosing, a Magellan GPS, a REI gift card and a Federal Recreational Lands Pass. The 2012 Share the Experience photo contest ended Dec. 31, but weekly winners voted on by the public included shots from the Chugach, Hiawatha and the Bridger Teton national forests. One of the most voted on shots in December included a photo from the Mount Evans Recreation Area on the Arapahoe-Roosevelt National Forest in Colorado. The contest encourages amateur photographers to explore the nation s federal lands and share their experiences by capturing and submitting their favorite shots. The winner will receive $15,000 with the winning image featured on the 2014 Annual Federal Recreation Lands Pass; second prize is $10,000; and third prize is $2,500. Photos must be taken on federal lands or historic sites managed by participating agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service. Contest guidelines and information about how to enter or how to vote for the fan favorite is on the Share the Experience website. If you don t have time to enter this year s contest, you have an entire year to prepare for next year s contest. More than 14,000 photos were submitted in the contest Maki won. Although he decided to enter the contest, he didn t work at winning. I thought I would enter a picture just for the heck of it, he said. I didn t think I had a chance. (via Page 4

BCHC - Sequoia Unit Joines with Food Link for a 2013 Food Drive Food Link Mission Statement FoodLink is committed to ending hunger for those in need by providing healthy food and nutrition education through community involvement Who is Food Link? FoodLink for Tulare County, a nonpro t organization, has been working to end hunger in Tulare County since FoodLink warehouses and distributes millions of pounds of food annually to a network of more than 80 local nonpro t agencies, which directly feed needy families. In 2010, food distributed through FoodLink's ef cient network of food collection, preservation, and distribution reached more than 120,000 people, with more than two thirds of those served being children. But food distribution alone is not enough to end hunger in our area. FoodLink also works to combat hunger through hunger-relief advocacy, and to eliminate its long-term effects through proper nutrition and health education Donations: Can t donate food? * FoodLink is working hard to achieve our vision No Child Goes Hungry. FoodLink can leverage you donation to make it go even further! F Food Programs FoodLink obtains food from a variety of sources. Food is donated from food drives, local farms and packing houses, food processors and manufacturers, gleaning groups, groceries, dairies and other available sources. FoodLink also purchases about $80,000 worth of food each year to add more nutritional value to the foods supplied. The donations are stored inside our 27,000 square feet of warehouse space. The food is then divided into usable quantities and distributed to our network of agencies. Food Bank Program This is FoodLink s main food distribution program. FoodLink was founded in 1978 under the rule of waste meets want. Millions of pounds of food grown and produced in our local area never get to market. FoodLink collects those items that meet health and safety requirements and delivers them to nonpro t hunger relief agencies. These agencies include emergency pantries, homeless and battered women shelters and soup kitchens. They then distribute our food to needy families and children in Tulare County. Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) EFAP is a government program under USDA. FoodLink receives between one-half and two million pounds of food from EFAP every year. The EFAP food commodities are provided by the USDA through surplus foods, price subsidies and other USDA food purchases. These food items vary, but typically include our, dry milk, fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and other foods. These EFAP commodities are distributed at 26 mass distributions held at emergency pantries, soup kitchens and rescue missions in each major town throughout the county. For a list of USDA commodities distribution sites in Tulare County. Nutrition on the Go! FoodLink is proud of the success of our newest program, Nutrition on the Go! This program is currently active Page 6

BCHC - Sequoia Unit Joines with Food Link for a 2013 Food Drive in 19 sites throughout Tulare County and Kings County. Staffed mainly by trained local volunteers, many of whom are program participants. Nutrition on the Go! Brings fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking tips and recipes, nutrition information, diabetes screenings and health education to low income families, often in communities with little or no access to fresh produce in their local markets due to unavailability or expense. Through Nutrition on the Go!, FoodLink partners with a variety of providers and agencies to promote healthier choices in a festive and fun, community-building atmosphere. After School Snack Program The After School Snack Program began in 1992 with a request from Washington School for a snack to feed kids who stay after school for special help and tutoring. It quickly grew to a closet program where teachers and aides had a little stash of food for kids who come to school dizzy or sleepy from lack of food. Summer Food Service Program This USDA-sponsored program provides a nutritious lunch to children who do not receive school lunch during the summer. FoodLink began sponsoring this program in 1991 and now serves 17 different sites throughout Tulare County. Most of these sites have activities for the children throughout the day. FoodLink delivers fresh lunches to these sites daily, serving 850 children. Included with these lunches are fun nutrition education activities for the children and their parents. Back Pack Program This program is designed to provide hungry children with nutritious and easily prepared food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and holiday vacations. FoodLink works closely with Title 1 (very low income) schools in our community, providing them with a back pack lled with child-friendly foods including fresh fruits at the end of every week while school is in session. This program provides 600 students with weekly backpacks. FoodLinks goal through this program is to help children succeed academically as well as socially. FoodLink obtains food from a variety of sources. Food is donated from food drives, local farms and packing houses, food processors and manufacturers, gleaning groups, groceries, dairies and other available sources. FoodLink also purchases about $80,000 worth of food each year to add more Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup) Tuna and canned meat Peanut butter Canned foods with pop-top lids Low-sugar cereals 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes Canned fruit packed in juice Canned vegetables (low salt) Page 7

Trout Ranger Station Log Book August 3 Linda and I had the ag up by 8 am, checked in with Jordan at 9. Rode toward Grasshopper Flats. We returned at 4:00 ish. We saw on one. Beautiful ride but very, very warm! Everything is sooo dry! Tons of dust. Hoping for rain tomorrow. Weather report said 45% chance of thunder storms. Checked out with Jordan. Took ag down around 5:00 pm. Very, very peaceful. August 4 August 5 August 8 August 17 August 18 Packer and group of 3 went by around 10:00 in the early afternoon. We had an interesting back packer. No permit. He said he didn t need one. He was high school age or just out. He s from Springville. He was advised that he could not have a re but he insisted he had no other way to cook but had a re permit and he knew how to be re safe in the woods and that res were caused by the government and they had way too much control! He also told us he hadn t attended high school. His pack was very heavy and he had wader type boots. I was worried about him! I did issue him a Wilderness Permit. He d come in out of Lewis trailhead and was headed for Kern Flats, but wasn t sure where he was going from there or where he would exit the wilderness. He did say he had minimal food and would be relying on sh. Packing up and heading out. Trout was awesome as always! ginman & lsmith Kicked in, or actually, backpacked in to Trout Meadow from the Kern River Station in the park. Started early to avoid the heat. Trees down everywhere. Will have to report the down trees between Kern Lake and the Kern River Station. Met a young man in full came next to Little Kern Lake. Said he had been out for six days already. His plan was to go to Cedar Grove? He was young and had a heavy pack. Talked about the government having too much control. Made it to the developed watering area North of Willow Meadow by lunch time. Finish hike to Trout Meadow Cabin in evening. Enjoyed socializing with some packers staying here for the night. Renee and I (jan w) arrived around 5:30 pm. Passed kids with their dad at bridge with 2 mules tied in camp. Hope they packed in some food for em! Met a nice woman from South Africa and a friend back packing to Little Lake. They came through Trout around 6:15 and had decided to go up to Willow for the night. Had dinner and watched stars before bed. Won t mention what time we got up for breakfast - Or was it lunch? Cabin in a bit of disorder and tons of food left in the trunk! Fire pit had alumiun foil and trash in it, orange chairs left out and dishes left out. After breakfast we washed ALL the dishes and cleaned counters. Renee cleaned the very dirty bathrooms - rst one is almost full and really stinky!! Haven t seen horses yet so headed down to nd them. On the ride in we also noticed the corner of the public pasture is down and part of the fence between the Admin pasture. *Note - signs have a white wash look to them now, like someone took white paint and painted over the letters. Renee and I will be taking pictures of fence and signs to discuss options for repairs. Noon - 2 hikers we met yesterday going to Little Lake came back thru headed out. Unsure of why. 2 other hikers walked thru - Waved and offered cold water but they kept on saying thanks! Had a visit from High Sierra group and Emily. H.S. having a beginner packing class at Cow Camp. Two hikers from Riverside came in headed to Doc s Camp or AKA hidden camp. They were 61 and 72 years and have been coming back here for many years to sh. Around 4 pm two misplaced hikers stopped for water and directions. Seems they missed the turn to Grey and ended up here. Very confused. They wanted to go to Grey Meadow to sh and hunt deer with bow. Renee and I are still trying to Page 8

Trout Ranger Station Log Book gure out how they will pack out the deer! Busy day! Now for some dinner with sauted Brussell Sprouts in Garlic Butter - Yum! August 19 August 25 August 27 August 28 August 29 August 30 Actually up during breakfast hours - yeah me! Pack station thru around 9:30 to pick up 3 hikers to take out and shortly after a lone hiker headed out as well. Everyone friendly but already stocked up with water. Around 11 am 4 guys and pack stock headed for home after about a week back here somewhere - they were from Porterville. Hauling out lots of trash and some of Lynn s stuff that had to be left behind. What s left will be packed out the 27th after we come back from ACE run. As usual, we nd food items left behind that should be packed out!! Will take what we can and pray it s enough to not tempt a bear!! Be back in Sat 25th Happy Trails - Jan W & Renee Z ACE group arrived around 2 pm. Hodgkins, Crystal and Mike and Jan Walker. Checked in and out with Jordan. Getting ready for dinner - oops, we forgot salt and pepper! Could be worse! Headed out about 7am to deliver the ACE stuff and back to Trout in same day. Also changed propane tanks however, only 1 works, the other has a bad valve. We re gunna try and pack it out to be xed! Mike and Bob Hodgkins decided they had to have salt on their food. We knew there were some salt blocks for the horses in the pasture so they went out with a hammer and knocked off some chunks. Elaine Hodgkins ground it with a hammer and pan lid. Yea! Salt. Pretty good too. We now call it Cowboy Salt. There is more in the cupboard if you need it. Jan headed back to Lewis Camp Trailhead about noon. Crystal, Mike, Bob and Elaine stayed. Bob and Mike xed the hitching post closest to the cabin. We mostly just enjoyed the day. Heading out tomorrow. Mike brought a lot of wood down for us tonight and for Peg. Checked out with Jordan Lookout, Bob talked with Margie. We were sitting around the re tonight thinking about Jan and remember the Beetle Dance. Bob found a beetle under her lash rope and she ran away. Bob threw a little rock and hit her leg. She screamed and danced around. We had great tacos for dinner and Schmores for desert. Woke up early, Bob had a nice re going already. The two young men from the pack station came up while we were having breakfast. They are xing the fence between the admin and public pasture where the mules from the pack station keep going through the fences. They borrowed the post hole diggers and fence tools and saw them use 5 posts while we were from the stack by corral. We are leaving the tool shed unlocked so they can lock tools back up. Elaine and Crystal cleaned the cabin and swept. Crystal cleaned the bathrooms and scrubbed the shower oor out. Everything is nice and clean for when Peg comes in on Wed. Margie (at Jordan) is off the next 23 days. We are heading back to Lewis Camp Trailhead. Had fun, we missed you today Jan!! Mary Ann & Peg arrived about 2:30. Just got set up and unpacked and had a lovely rain shower. Horses ( and Bobbie Sue) are in admin with pack station stock. If those boys xed the fence yesterday, they did a less than fab job of it! After rain shower went out and tried to repair cross fence. Got all but one big mule into public and reinforced posts and wire (also hay twine!) Need to set some new posts and de nitely string new wire. Pleasant evening. Steak for supper. Up about 6:30 am Thursday. Flag up - horses seem alone - no sign of big mule. Will check fence after breakfast. Temp about 52 degrees. 7:00 am - not a cloud in the sky. good breakfast - checkied in with Porterville channel 4 tone 9? checked cross fence and carried a Page 9
