1 The SPARC Newsletter of the Boston Amateur Radio Club Volume XVI, Number 8; August How I am Spending My Summer, and How Are You Spending Yours? -- Eric Falkof, K1NUN Here we are at midsummer and my project list has grown. I m supposed to have completed the first nine items of the fifteen preferred projects, but I ve done only four and the list has grown to over twenty. Where has the time gone? Well, what did I do? I used up my supply of Anderson PowerPoles on several rigs and extension and adapter cables. (Note to self: At Boxboro, buy a bag of them for the club project at the first meeting in September. Furthermore, be sure to tell people in the September SPARC.) I recharged that gell cell battery I use with my QRP rigs. I ve made arrangements to pick up the Squalo six-meter antenna and I ve got the mounting hardware. Let s see, I restocked my go-kit and bought a supply of new AA batteries (and I got a 9V battery for the smoke detector outside my shack). I ve mowed the lawn, cleaned out a sink drain pipe, and a few other minor projects. But I still have the big projects ahead. I have yet to help BARC and BERT presence at the Boston Emergency Management Agency during the DNC. (In a week, that last sentence will need to be changed to past tense.) I want to finally fix that Gonset G-76 transceiver I showed off at the end of last year at a BARC meeting; such is procrastination. I want to work with BARC s committee team and Executive Committee to schedule a series of speakers and activities for the year, and I want to publish it to you. This summer is one of doing and planning, planning and doing. Planning is not the same as doing, but it is necessary for a full program for the year. I want to have some goals in place so we can see how we measure up to them as the year goes on. What about you? What are you doing this summer? What have you put off and what have you accomplished? You can write to our faithful editor, Paul Carter at n1tmf@pvctronics.com, and let the club document your successes in The SPARC. Remember, you can subscribe to The SPARC online the internet saves everything forever and your writing will be immortalized! Think about it You can describe your DNC experience, the treasure you find at the hamfest in Boxboro, or the squirrel that ate your counterpoise. Share your summer adventures with BARC. Come Together All Right, Right Now! -- Eric Falkof, K1NUN Remember the refrain? Right out of the 70s. But it spoke volumes about working and pulling together. Here s what we have in mind for the new year. I remember joining organizations and filled out membership forms, checking off the committees I d like to join. Then I remember waiting for a call to come to a meeting. And waiting. And waiting. Nobody called to tell when the next meeting would be held. Time went on. I moved on. Ever happened to you? I m betting there are BARC members who d like to participate in some of the committees that we see reported in the Business meeting news in each month s SPARC. Wouldn t it make sense that some wonder how this happens, who makes it happen? In this world, there are those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what s happening. Let s move some of those in the middle grouping into the first; then we can help the third group. In the September SPARC (next month), we will list several committees that need extra hands. Some will need hands for short term help, long term help, or occasional help. At the September General meeting, I will pass around a clip board with the names of the committees and places where those of you who would like to do more can write your name, , and phone number. These lists will be given to the committee chairpersons shortly after the meeting, and they will contact you within the following two weeks to discuss activities and participation. If you do not hear from the committee chair by then, call or write me! I will see that you get a response. I remember how I felt when I volunteered and was ignored, and I didn t like it. I bet you didn t like it either. If you step forward, we will see to it that you are involved. Ham Radio is a contact sport and your executive team has an obligation to see to it that you are contacted and kept in contact. And involved. Reread the title to this little article. Reread it right now! The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. You re just jealous because the voices talk only to me. Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

2 Thanks from EMA ARES I offer a sincere thank you to the Officers and Members of the Boston Amateur Radio Club for allowing Eastern Mass ARES use of the club s repeaters during the DNC. We learned much throughout the entire event. It was very comforting to know that we had operators immediately available to handle anything that may have occurred. ARES was allowed an extremely wide latitude in the use of , and yet we were able to allow normal amateur use and to continue all scheduled nets. A special thanks goes to the normal users who graciously moved their traffic to other frequencies or otherwise stood by and kept the frequency available. BARC was a major player in this event and should be very proud of it. All of us are now much better prepared for any event that may occur. Mark J. Duff, KB1EKN; Metro-Boston DEC Congratulations to Officers Congratulations and welcome are due the elected officers of BARC. At the June General meeting, the following were elected: President Eric Falkof K1NUN Vice President Blake Haskell K1BTH* Secretary Paul Olivieri N1ZKR Treasurer Jim Clogher N1ICN* *incumbent According to our bylaws, the new terms of office begin at the next General meeting (September). Please give a helping hand to the club and the officers by contacting any of them to assist in club activities. Actor Marlon Brando, KE6PZH/FO8GJ, SK -- ARRL Letter, 16 July 2004, 23 July 2004 One of the best-known names in cinema, Marlon Brando, KE6PZH/FO8GJ, died in Los Angeles July 1. He was 80. Brando appears in the FCC database under the apparent pseudonym, Martin Brandeaux, while his FO8GJ listing indicates both Brando and Brandeaux. Brando held a US General class ticket. He was on the air occasionally over the years as FO8GJ from his private island in French Polynesia. In a 1994 CNN interview with Larry King, Brando affirmed his continued interest in Amateur Radio. In response to a caller's question, he said ham radio provided him with the opportunity to just be himself. Brando was best known for his roles as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, as a dockworker in On the Waterfront, and as Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won twice. World Class Triathlon Agony - Again -- Bob Salow, WA1IDA The Monster Challenge Triathlon, which was run for the third time in Boston last year, continues to be an international success. We have been asked again this year to coordinate emergency and safety communications support. The formal name for the event is the Monster Challenge Tri-Boston. It is sponsored by Monster.com for the benefit of the AIDS Action Committee. Anywhere in the world a triathlon is an exciting and very demanding race. In urban Boston it is a further test of strength and determination. Designed to professional standards, the swimbike-run will be held on Sunday, 5 September. The Olympicclass triathletes will swim one mile, bike 25 miles, and run 6.2 miles. The course is laid out in Boston harbor, downtown Boston and Cambridge, and in the Boston seaport area. We have been specifically asked to monitor a number of hazardous and confusing locations for the safety of the participants. As you read this, time is short and your help is vital. A problem is that this is Labor Day weekend, so extra effort must go into getting enough hams. A bit of relief is provided by the schedule which expects the entire event to go from 0630 to 1100, so the rest of your day is free. If you can support this event, contact Mark Duff, KB1EKN, at or to emgmgt@comcast.net; or Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at or to wa1ida@arrl.net. Please call if you would like more information. All You Can Eat and Public Service, Too -- Bob Salow, WA1IDA Here s a ham public service event where the reward might be better than the job. WGBH, the public TV channels 2 and 44, and FM radio, will hold their annual Ice Cream FunFest on Saturday, 18 September, at and around the WGBH station on Western Avenue in Brighton. We will start a bit earlier and run a bit later, but on Saturday only. We have been asked to provide communications for the safety and management of the crowd and their vehicles. We plan a revised strategy for parking lot coverage so we can be more effective. It s a compact area, so 2-meter simplex HTs can be used. A great advantage for us is that BARC is given free booth space to promote public awareness of ham radio to the thousands of visitors. In past years our booth has introduced many people to our hobby and also stirred interest in several inactive hams. About 16 to 18 hams will be needed for communications and/or meeting the public. Although such a good cause (and good publicity for us) doesn t need it, here s the good part: all volunteers get to eat all the ice cream you can consume (urp!). The ice cream is provided by 11 manufacturers, so you can make comparative tests (urp, urp!). If you can help (from 0900 to 1500), get more information by calling Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at , or to wa1ida@arrl.net.

3 Advance Notice for Public Service Later in the Year BARC has been asked to support communications again for exciting events later this year. Mark your calendars because your help will definitely be needed. Details will be posted as the dates approach. Sunday, 10 October, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) puts on the BAA Half Marathon. It covers a scenic route, 98% in Boston and 2% in Brookline. While very scenic, it is still an urban course with many hazards which we will care for. To volunteer or for more information, contact Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at wa1ida@arrl.net or Temporary VE Session Change Because of extensive renovations at the Pierce School this summer, we must cancel the VE sessions for August. Things should get back to almost normal with the session on 13 September. Almost normal, because the next month s exams are moved up to 4 October by the school holiday. After that you can rely on the second Mondays of each month (unless dire circumstances intervene). You Can Get Your Newsletter Hot Off the Wire! -- Bob Salow, WA1IDA In an effort to conserve club resources, we are offering early access to The SPARC electronically, which also saves the costs of paper, printing and postage. Even if you have already renewed your 2004 membership, but neglected to check to accept receiving the newsletter electronically, all you need to do is send an to the Keeper of the Database at wa1ida@arrl.net. Let him know you want to help BARC save money. Please provide your name, call and an accurate address. You will be notified by each month as soon as the issue is ready for access at a private member web site as quickly as it is published. There is considerable cost associated with the mailed hard copy. This can be saved thanks to your acceptance and the generous efforts of Mike, N1IST, who has organized the electronic publication. BARC Growth It s a rare month when we fail to add a few new members. Periodically we publish their names so that you can give them a special welcome. There may also be some upgrades and long lost members who rejoin, so greet them, too. Barry Jacobson WA2VIU Please welcome the new BARC members. Make it a point to introduce yourself when you see them at a meeting. In addition, we would like to note here all call sign changes. Cookout In Place of September Breakfast On Sunday, 12 September, BARC will hold a cookout for members, their families and friends. This social event will take the place of the usual Sunday breakfast for that date. The cookout will be held at the Bare Cove Fire Museum in Hingham from 1100 to The Club will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and soft drinks. The Fire Museum and the nearby South Shore Model Railroad Club will provide added fun. A good turnout is expected, so you will have a good time. To assist in the planning, contact Paul Olivieri, N1ZKR, to indicate your attendance and your guests. If you need a ride or can offer a ride, tell Paul and he will try to help solve such connections. You will, of course, be responsible for the travel arrangements. Paul can be reached at n1zkr@juno.com or at Directions: The Fire Museum address is 19 Fort Hill Street in Hingham. From Boston, take Route3A South. Cross over the Hingham/Weymouth Bridge, then take a right on to Beal Street. At the end of Beal Street, turn right on to West Street. At the end of West Street, at the Stop sign, turn right on to Fort Hill Street. An immediate left will then bring you into Bare Cove Park and the Fire Museum. There is a sign on the street for Bare Cove Park directing you into the Fire Museum and the South Shore Model Rail Road Club. The entrance to Bare Cove Park is on South Street, across from the South Shore Country Club between the Hingham Credit Union and Thomas Auto Body (on Fort Hill Street). Fort Hill Street starts at the East Weymouth town line, but the name changes when it crosses the railroad tracks and it becomes South Street. The Fire Museum has a web site if you would like a sneak peek: The official Museum phone, , is answered by Geri Duff, KB1ISG. The actual building phone is It will be answered the day of the event.
