2 100 DAYS OF WINTER Late November - Early March Get Out. Get Active. Winter is here! As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, it can be tempting to hunker down inside and do less. Less work, less play, and less time outdoors. To some degree, there s comfort in that, but in order to avoid taking it to extremes, I encourage you to check out all the exciting things to do in the 100 Days of Winter Programming Guide. As Russian Playwright Anton Chekhov once said, People don t notice whether it s winter or summer when they re happy, and this winter s catalog holds great promise for things to keep you happy and busy throughout the next few months. For those who like to embrace the cold, New Mexico s only outdoor, refrigerated, NHL-regulation ice rink offers opportunities to Skate with Santa, play broom ball, and watch hockey. Those who prefer the coziness of the indoors may want to catch a concert, build a gingerbread house, or drop-in at the pool on a Warm Water Weekend. Whatever your idea of fun may be, I m willing to bet you ll be able to find it in this guide. And as the season gets in full swing, watch for details about additional community events and programs! We always welcome and appreciate your feedback, so please us any time at csd@lacnm.us with your thoughts about this guide or County programming. Sincerely, Brian Brogan Los Alamos County Community Services Director COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT MISSION: Attract residents and tourists to our facilities and services through excellent user experiences. VISION: To be a central hub for all recreation, education, social and cultural services in Los Alamos County. 2

Individuals, families, organizations and businesses are able to readily enjoy the outdoors in Los Alamos County. Whether for an afternoon stroll, office party, soccer game, weekend hike, tennis match, athletic training, or family birthday party......you are provided a beautiful backdrop for a wide variety of activities! OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Open Space & Trails Lying on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande. The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by a 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety of trails from which to choose. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views. Looking for a Trailhead? Watch for the Trailhead signs along major roads throughout the County. Find more information about the County Trail Network online: losalamosnm.us - Click on Recreation in the middle of the page. Using Open Space & Trails Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails. Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Leave all cultural resources undisturbed. Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users. Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times. Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid. 12

13 Areas to Explore Central to the community, Pueblo Canyon holds a network of trails that are easily accessible from the Aquatic Center and Kinnikinnik Park and from downtown and North Community. Many of the trails follow along just below the canyon rim and are easy walking. The historic Ranch School Trail drops 400 feet and leads to the canyon bottom. Orange volcanic cliffs make this canyon one of the most picturesque locations in the County. A favorite local hiking spot is White Rock Canyon. The canyon is 900 feet deep from the rim to the Rio Grande. The attractions are the river, the springs, the rocks-basalt lavas oozed from the volcanoes of the Caja del Rio Plateau, and the hundreds of petroglyphs that adorn rocks in the canyon. Two trails lead to the river, the Red and Blue Dot trails, and both are steep and rugged. On the edge of White Rock a rim trail offers easy access to views into the canyon. Bayo Canyon separates North and Barranca Mesas. Easy trails follow the bench just below the canyon rim, and the Bayo Canyon Trail travels to the canyon bottom where there are extensive stands of old-growth ponderosa pines. East of Downtown, two universally-accessible, hardsurface trails follow the north and south rims of Los Alamos Mesa. Both trails have a 10-foot wide asphalt surface that maintains a grade of less than 5%. From East Park, the Los Alamos Mesa Trail travels along the rim of Pueblo Canyon for about a half mile, offering colorful views of the canyon. The western trailhead for the Canyon Rim Trail is located at the southwest corner of the Smith s Marketplace parking lot. A second parking area is located a little over 2 miles to the east on New Mexico 502 (East Road) on the south side of the highway. This trail winds a scenic route through open woodlands and features a 300-foot long bridge that overlooks Los Alamos Canyon. Along the Western Perimeter, the Quemazon Trail area features a nature trail, a historic road, and rim trail with wonderful views. Download a trail guide for the Quemazon Nature Trail at the Trails page on the County web site. The guide was developed and designed by sixth-grade students at Mountain Elementary. For a longer and scenic route, take the Satch Cowan Trail along the rim of Los Alamos Canyon. The Mitchell Trail provides entry to the Perimeter Trail, which encircles North Community. Want suggestions for a hike? Trail descriptions are available on the County website under Recreation then Open Space and Trails. Trailhead brochures are available for each of the major trailheads in the County. Each brochure has maps and detailed guides for three trips that begin and end at a trailhead. Pick up trailhead brochures at the Aquatic Center, the lobby of the Municipal Building, the Visitor Centers, or download them from: losalamosnm.us - Click on Recreation in the middle of the page. The eastern mesas are long fingers of rock that reach out toward the Rio Grande valley. A loop trail on Deer Trap Mesa and the out-and back Kwage Mesa Trail are scenic routes that end at spectacular viewpoints overlooking much of Northern New Mexico. 13

45 Los Alamos Little Theatre 75 th Anniversary Season Join us in celebrating the Los Alamos Little Theatre s 75th Anniversary Season! Our long history of presenting theatre in our community began in 1943 during the Manhattan Project, with a performance of a play called Right About Face. Subsequent productions during the War included Arsenic and Old Lace, featuring Dr. Robert Oppenheimer in a non-speaking role. In 1973, we opened the current Performing Arts Center after extensive renovation of what had been the East Mess Hall. We ve operated the building in an ongoing agreement with Los Alamos County ever since, producing more than 230 theatrical presentations on our stage and hosting other community groups. This year s performance lineup includes something for everyone: a historical drama, a Neil Simon farce, a do-it-yourself mystery, a modern dramedy, and our sixth production of short plays featuring local playwrights. We look forward to welcoming you in our audience, on our stage, or behind the scenes! Sign up for our mailing list on our website, lalt.org, or during your next visit. lalt.org Performing Arts Center: 1670 Nectar St. The Los Alamos Little Theatre is a registered 501(c)(3) not for profit organization.
