3 SUMMER by Veronika Šimoničová, 4.A Summer is my favourite season. In summer we go on holiday or to the swimming pool. It is hot and the sun is very strong. We always go on holiday by plane. We can eat ice-cream. We put ice to every drink. I like mint or strawbery lemonade. My favourite food in summer is ice-cream or ice lollies. I hate to put on suncream and I hate salt water in my hair. 3

4 OUR HOMETOWN Bratislava Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia. It is an old town. The river Danube flows through Bratislava. There are five bridges in my town. They are called Apollo bridge, SNP bridge, Old bridge, Harbour bridge and Lafranconi bridge. Bratislava isn t on a hill. It has got two castles. These castles are called Bratislava castle and Devín castle. Bratislava is at a crossroads. The roads go to Budapest, Vienna, Brno and to Trnava. Bratislava has got a few markets, for example Tržnica Miletičova. There are also many squares. The most famous is Main square but there isn t a market. Adela Hudecová, 5.C 4

5 BRATISLAVA This town is old and it is the capital of Slovakia. The Danube river flows through Bratislava. There are five bridges in the town: Harbour bridge, Apollo bridge, SNP bridge, Old bridge and Lafranconi bridge. Bratislava isn t on a hill, but Bratislava castle is on a hill. The Main square in Bratislava is Hlavné námestie. There is a Christmas market in this square. The classic market with fruit and vegetables is in Miletičová Street. Bratislava is at the crossroad of Brno in the North, Budapest in the South, Košice in the East and Vienna in the West. There are many shpping centres for example: Bory Mall, Aupark, Avion, Polus, Eurovea etc. There are two national theaters in Bratislava, one is opposite Eurovea and the other is in Hviezdoslav square. 6 MY BEST FRIEND His name is Ondrik. He is nine years old. He can swim. He can dance. He can t play tennis. He can ride a bike. He likes dogs. He likes games. He likes reading books. He doesn t like spiders. His favourite food is granadir. Lukáš Seidner, 3.C Riško Szilárd, 3.C My best friend is Luky. He is nine years old. His hair is blond and his eyes are blue. On Tuesdays we play tennis and on Thursdays we play floorball. He s good at it. He likes to play with his friends. I like him, he is nice and funny. My best friend is Milanko. He lives in Kráľová pri Senci. He is 7 years old. His favourite food is spaghetti and pizza. He likes dogs. He can ride a bike and he can swim, but he can t play tennis. Milanko is good at football. 7 My best friend is Marko. Marko is nine years old. He can play floorball. He can t dance. He is a goalman, he is very good at it. Every Thursday we play together. He likes spaghetti and hamburgers with chips. Samko Šramatý, 3.C My best friend is a girl. My best friend is 9 years old. Her name is Dominika. My friend can t play tennis. My friend can play volleyball. She hasn t got a pet at home but her grandma has got 3 cats. She has got blue eyes and long fair hair. We like to eat wafles. I like to drink water but Dominika likes to drink cola. We like to ride a bike in the park on Saturday. On Wednesday we feed the ducks. Rebeka Společníková, 3.C 7

8 My best friend is Dorotka. She is 8 ears old. She can play football. She is good at it. Dorotka can also play dodgeball, but she can t sail a boat. She likes spaghetti, lemonade and cakes, but she doesn t like spinach. Saška Sedliaková, 3.C My best friend My best friend is Danielka. She is nine years old. She has got long brown hair and big black eyes. She can play the piano. She is good at it. She can also dance and swim. She can t ski and play tennis. Danielka has got one brother. His name is Jožko. Danielka likes to play with her brother. Her favourite food is pizza. She also likes to eat spaghetti, chicken and chips. She doesn t like spinach with egg. Her favourite drink is mineral water. She also likes to drink tea, apple juice an cola. She doesn t like coffee. She hasn t got a pet, but she likes dogs and cats. She is scared of snakes and spiders. She is a very good friend. 9 HEROES AND HEROINES IN SLOVAKIA ĽUDOVÍT ŠTÚR He was a Slovak politician, philosopher, historian, linguist, writer, poet, journalist, editor and educator. He was born on 28 October 1815 in Uhrovec. He was the son of Samuel Štúr and his wife Anna Štúrová. He studied 12 languages, he did not use y and he did not enjoy love. In 1838 he began studying at the University of Halle, where he worked for two years. He studied theology, history, philosophy. After completing his studies, he returned to Bratislava and began working again at the Department of Slovak Language and Literature. He became famous by enacting a literary Slovak at a time when the official language in Slovakia was Hungarian and our territory belonged to Hungarians. Before death he was under the control of the Hungarian police in Modra. It was an unfortunate coincidence that he was shot in the foot. He died on 12 January Laura Kováčová, 7.A 9

10 Janko Matúška by Ingrid Kernová, 7.C Janko Matúška was born in 1821 and died on 11 January He was a Slovak poet, activist, occasional playwright, and clerk of the court. Janko Matúška was born in the family of the craftsman Juraj Matúška and his wife Zuzana Bencúrová. He is best known as the author of the Slovak national anthem, Nad Tatrou sa blýska based on the melody of the Slovak folk song Kopala studienku in His nemorial is in Dolný Kubín. 10

11 PAVOL ORSZÁGH HVIEZDOSLAV Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav was born in 1849 and he died in He was a Slovak writer, poet, dramatist, translator, and for a short time, member of the Czechoslovak parliament. First, he wrote in a traditional style, but later became influenced by parnassism and modernism. He introduced the syllabic-tonic verse into Slovak poetry and became the leading representative of Slovak literary realism. His style is charakterized by extensive use of self-coined words and expressions, making it difficult to translate his works into foreign languages. His dramas are for example: na Luciu, Oblaky, Pomsta. His statue at Hviezdoslavovo námestie in Bratislava Slovakia Dianka Horváthová, 7.C JÁN BAHÝĽ He was born in 1856 and died in He had a technical talent. As a construction technician he worked in the Austrian part of Poland, in Galicia and until 1895 in Dalmatia. Later he moved to Bratislava. He made a number of proposals to improve artillery technology and rail transport. He dealt with many different problems. In 1894, he designed a helicopter design with human power. Between 1901 and 1903 an improved model of the Bahýľ helicopter called AVION was created at Marschall's workshop. 11 He made many inventions, for example: Helicopter Balloon Tank Elevator Matúš Kráľ, 7.C

12 Milan Lasica He was born on 3rd February,1940 in Zvolen. As a child he lived in Pliešovce. He studied dramaturgy at the VŠMU in Bratislava. During his studies he began to perform in the Tatra Revue, where he and Julius Satinský showed his authorial dialogues. In he worked as a dramaturge of Czechoslovak television, from 1967 to 1971 he was a member of the theater Na korze in Bratislava, Večerní Brno, Nová scéna, Bratislava and since 1978 a member of the theater Nová scéna. Since 1982, he has been the art director of Studio S, where he now acts as director. With his wife Magda Vašáryová, actress, diplomat he has daughters Hana and Žofia. He has a Merit Medal. In socialism, he and Julius Satinský were one of the most popular TV and film actors in Czechoslovakia. Emília Vašáryová She was born on 18th May,1942 in Horná Štubňa. As a child she lived in Banská Štiavnica. In 1963 she studied acting at VŠMU in Bratislava. She was a member of the theater Nová scéna and since 1964 she is a member of the Slovak national theater. At present, viewers can see her at the theater Pavla Országha Hviezdoslava. In 1978 she was given the title of a deserving artist. She collaborates with radio, film and television. She currently works at the VŠMU as a pedagogue. Emília Vášáryová has sister Magda Vašáryová. She is also a well-known actress, but since November 1989 she has been working in politics. She has two sons -Tomáš and Juraj. Kristína Pažitková, 7.A 12

13 Pavol Demitra Pavol Demitra was a great hockey player. He played in NHL as well as in KHL. He was the captain of our Slovak National hockey team at World Championships in Bratislava. He was born on 29. November 1974 in Dubnica nad Váhom. He started his professional hockey career in Trenčín. He played in NHL for Ottawa Senators, St.Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings. He got different awards: Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2000 for his behaviour combined with a high standard of playing ability and he was a player in NHL All-Star Game in 1999, 2000 and He was married to Mária Demitrová and they had two children Zara and Lucas. He was very popular because he was friendly, funny and nice to other people. He helped talented children. He died in 2011 in Yaroslav in a plane crash while flying to Minsk because of a hockey match. The plane crashed near the river Volga and all 42 passengers died. Peter Sagan Peter Sagan is a Slovak professional cyclist. He comes from Žilina. When he was younger, he did cyclocross and mountain bike racing. His nickname is Tournimator. He was born in 26 January 1990 and he has a sister and an older brother Juraj who is a rider too. They are both in Bora team. It is a German team. He started his professional career in He is considered one of cycling's greatest talents. He won a green jersey in the Tour de France in and was World Road Race Championships in 2015 and He is a great showman, people love him because of his sense of humour. He helped children who do not have money but are good at cycling. He organises camps and different races for kids. 13 Valentín Mikuš, 7.A

14 THE FUTURE OF PLANET EARTH I think in the future there will be very big problems with water. Water will be very dangerous to drink. And if anyone wants to plant crops, it won t start growing because water will be toxic. I think another problem will be with air. Air will be toxic too and the human race will start going extinct. And it will be a big problem for the nature. Animals will become extinct too. So people will go to Mars. I think people on Mars will live in cities and start to plant crops. They will have electric cars. Big factories won t be built. And planet Mars will be safe. Max Kabát, 6.A 14

15 THE FUTURE We are living in a century where everything is changing quickly. What will life be like 100 years in the future? Our Earth will be overpopulated. I think, that some people will live on Mars. People will be able to travel to other planets. We will not have cars, buses, trains but we will have flying electric cars and faster spaceships. Because people will travel across space, they will wear a special suit. Everything will be on solar energy. Life will be easier because robots will do almost all work. We will work about five hours a day. We will relax and travel more. People will live longer, maybe 120 years. There won t be deseases and hunger in the future. We will take one pill for everything. Babies will be born in test-tubes. In the future we will be able to choose a boy or a girl. We will be able to choose color of eyes, hair and skin. We will communicate telepathically. In the future, we will pay by chip under the skin. But most likely none of that will happen and Earth will be destroyed by the Sun explosion. Laura Ifková, 6.A 15

16 The future I think we will have a good or a bad future. First I ll write about the good and then about the bad. I think we ll have hologram notebooks. They ll work on finger-touch. Everybody will travel to space because theese notebooks will make door or windows to space. I think we ll control the time and space. I think we ll live on more planets. But the most people will live on the Earth. We won t go to school. We ll have USB ports in heads and we ll only copy information. Our parents will go to work. We ll be all day at home or out with friends. That was the good future and now I am going to decribe the bad one. I think we won t find any other planet and the Earth will be ugly. There won t be any water and people will die of lack of water. In the atmosphere there will be a lot of dangerous smokes. We won t have any forests and in the atmosphere there will only be a little oxygen. Would you like our Earth to look like this? If you don t want it, don t contaminate our planet and don t cut down our forests. Everone should separate the rubbish and save drinking water. LOOK AFTER THE EARTH!!! 18 WATER Water oh water, you are the Earth's daughter, rain, lakes, seas and oceans, I express emotions. I drink because water isn't pink, I like your color, you don't cost a dolar. Fish live in the lake, in there their house they make. My dream is to go for a sea swim. Katarína Belešová, 6.A WATER I will tell you the truth, the water is blue. What you have to think is it's the healthiest drink. I drink water every day, It s true, hooray hooray. Summer is hotter than winter, I drink cold water. Matúš Škarbala, 6.A 18

19 ENGLISH CAFÉ The last day of school before Christmas holiday our class 8.A prepared a great event English Café. We prepared and offered various cookies and special Christmas drinks such as Olaf s hug or Santa s surprise, but the main speciality was that our guests had to use English only! This is our staff: waiters, cooks, supervisors, photographer (you can t see him because he is the one who was taking this photo) and of course our manager Dušan. 20 Here are some comments of children who took part in this event: It was a very funny day. We cooked muffins, gingerbreads, indian cakes and people were buying it! Money we made our teacher spent on English books. It was great! I love to talk to people in English. It was fun to make drinks and muffins. I d like to do something like that again. Kika It was great. I made a lot of photographs of our customers... It was a great idea of English library from money we get. I would be happy to repeat this event soon. It was fun, sometimes we felt disappointed because we didn t know what to do, but in the end it was fine. I really enjoyed being a waitress because I talked to people and sometimes they made me laugh. I am happy because we could buy books from money we made. Ta daa!!! Thanks to you and children from 8.A. We ve bought these wonderful books. And the best news is - this is just the beggining! We want to continue and found an English library for pupils in our school. Keep your fingers crossed for us! 20 8.A

21 As part of the project Spoznávame krásy Malých Karpát the pupils of classes 9.A and 8.A again were getting to know the beauties and interesting places of The Little Carpathians, this time in its Spring part. They visited Čachtice castle with its mysterious underground and The Miniature Park in Podolie. On the following pages they are sharing their experiences. School trip On Thursday, 25 th May we (9.A and 8.A) went on a 2 day trip by bus. Day 1 Project Spoznávame krásy Malých Karpát Our first stop was in Čachtice. We had a guided tour through the underground hallways. The underground hallways were used like tunnels to deeper, safer places when someone attacked the village. After the underground we went to the castle on the hill. On the castle we had a guided tour. The guide told us about a secret gate and where Mrs. Báthory died. Then we went for lunch and rooms to Agropenzión Adam. After lunch we had activities (9.A - pool; 8.A - outdoor games). Day 2 We went to the outdoor museum of small samples of historical buildings in Podolie. After that we started our way home through Piešťany. First we visited the Glass bridge and the spa centre. Then we had lunch and after another hour we finished our trip at school. Thanks a lot to Mrs. Zlatošová, Mrs. Tkáčová and Mrs. Kujanová for a fantastic trip. 21 Tomáš Trenčan, 9.A

22 Trip: Little Carpathians We went on a trip on Thursday 25 th May and we returned on Friday afternoon. Our first stop after we left our school was the underground of Čachtice. There was a guide waiting for us there. He explained to us who was A. Báthory and how were some buildings connected to her. Then he took us underground into what used to be a wine cellar, where it is said she tortured young noblewomen and bathed in their blood. We spent there about 1-2 hours and then we left in search for another place with a dark past. We found it shortly after. The place is called Castle Čachtice. It is the place where A. Báthory lived hundreds of years ago and it is the place where she got caught torturing the young girls in her secret room. After people found out what she was doing, they locked her in her tower and killed her accomplices. She died of heart attack there. After exploring the castle we went to our hotel in which we were accommodated by our awesome teachers. We slept there and the next day we left the hotel at about 10:00 am. Our first stop that day was a park with miniatures in Podolie. There were models of different castles, wooden churches and houses where famous people lived. There was a guide there as well, who told us a bit about the park. After we left the park we went to a spa called Piešťany, where we spent 1-2 hours. That was the last stop after which we headed home. I really enjoyed the trip and I hope the others did too. 22 Martin Molnár, 9.A
