3 President s Corner RWK Meeting Minutes The April Show-n-Tell meeting was a big success. Eight or nine members gave short talks on their latest projects and goodies. It was a lot of fun, and, in my opinion, much more interesting than the usual meeting where we all sit quietly and listen to someone give a presentation. Not that I have anything against the usual ham club presentation. They can be quite interesting and informative. But doing the same thing month after month can get pretty boring, and I m glad we occasionally have a different type of program. I hope you all agree. And if not, Well, I don t want to be a broken record here, but if you have any ideas or suggestions, don t keep them to yourself. On Saturday, April 15 th, a number of us made the pilgrimage to Nortex Electronics in Fort Worth. It was good to be back. Nortex is not so much a place to buy stuff although Lewis has literally tons of test equipment, components, cables, etc. for sale but more a place to get back in touch with whatever it was that made you want to be a ham in the first place. It s in the air you can smell it as soon as you walk through the door. Part of the excitement was to be able to share the experience with others who feel the same way about all this radio and electronics stuff. Most of the guys found a few small items to take home, and then it was on to Tanner s. The whole trip took about four hours, and for me at least, it was well worth the time. Do you have any ideas for a future RWK field trip? Is there something that you really wish the club would do, like a club project, demo, training session, or?? Please let Bud or I know. If it seems feasible we ll do what we can to make it happen. 73, Bob K5WO. The April 10, 2006 meeting was called to order by Bob Kmak, K5WO. There were 18 members and 2 visitors present. The visitors were Jim Hunzelman, NR5Z, and Francois Berube, VA2RC. There being no old or new business to discuss, we broke for refreshments, and enjoyed cookies provided by Dave, W2DMR. The program for the evening was provided by the many members that brought something to show and tell about. Ray, K5RFF, kicked things off by demonstrating his battery analyzer by West Mountain Radio. Carl, W5SU, forgetting that April first was 10 days past, claimed to have fashioned a 2-meter HT from bits and pieces lying about the house. Don, K5LHO, showed an LDG Z11 Pro automatic antenna tuner. Bud, WI5G, showed a Hi-Mound HK-808 key, and discussed his passion for Hallicrafters receivers that glow and smell like real electronics should. Bob, W5LT, showed photos of his 4-acre remote QTH on Lake Lavon, complete with 78 foot tower. Eldon, WA5CVQ, showed a well-performing homebrew grid dip meter. Bob, N4CD, showed a 60 Amp spark transmitter key made by Kilbourne & Clark of Seattle. Ken, KD5ZXG, displayed his antenna building prowess with a novel 2-meter beam based on a Moxon rectangle with a reflector and a director element added to it. Dave, W2DMR, showed two homebrew audio projects, a 5 Hz to 20 khz amplifier with adjustable high pass and lowpass filters, and a speech processor for compressing audio to reduce the peak to average power ratio. Bob, K5WO, wrapped things up with a display of his 10 GHz rover transverter rig. Thanks to all who contributed to an interesting and varied program. There were two door prizes given away. Fred, W5HTR, won a multi-tester, and Dave, W2DMR, won a Lockheed calendar. Bing, N5XP, won $8 in the evening s pot. 73, Roy Culbertson, AD5EQ. The Chawed Rag 3

5 April 15, 2006 "Partspedition" Following the monthly Saturday morning breakfast at Luby's attended by sixteen members, eight trekked to Nortex Electronics in southwest Fort Worth and rummaged through the catacombs of old electronics equipment. The following went: Carl Solomon W5SU, Bill Cantwell WB5SLX, Ray Battalora K5RFF, Bob Kellow, W5LT, Bud Johnson, WI5G, Eldon Edgin, WA5CVQ, Bob Kmac K5WO, and a mystery guest. Some photos follow: RWK Members Support Earth Day Richardson Wireless Klub members provided communications support for the 2006 Earth Day Celebration sponsored by the Neighborhood Service Council, Inc. of Dallas. The wet weather cleared just in time to allow the event to be held in Cottonwood Trail Park on Maham Road and Midpark Road in Dallas. Operators were Doug Kilgore KD5OUG, Forest Cummings W5LQU, Bud Walton K5HW, and Dave Russell W2DMR. The Chawed Rag 5

6 May 8, 2006 Program - BRING YOUR HALLICRAFTER RADIO!!! The May program will be a look back into history of WW II and the contribution of Bill Halligen, Bob Samuelson, Fritz Franke and the other engineers and workers of the Hallicrafter Radio Company of Chicago, Illinois. We will be viewing a short film about the development of the Hallicrafter SCR 299 for the U.S. Army Signal Corp. The SCR 299 was based on the HT 4 Hallicrafter amateur radio and what hams did to help further the war effort. It is interesting to note that a SCR 299 and its associated equipment package sold at auction in Arizona in January of 2006 for over $267, The one that sold in the car auction looks exactly like the ones we will be viewing in the film. This film was written, directed and filmed in 1943 at the massive radio works of Hallicrafter in Chicago at their 7th street plant. Come join us for the May meeting of the RWK and view the "Voice of Victory". BRING YOUR HALLICRAFTER RADIO! THIS WILL BE FUN. Bud, WI5G ARRL Field Day RWK will not officially sponsor ARRL Field Day activities this year. However, please participate by joining in with another club.
