On On, called Spud, as the pack headed down the Pacific Highway for a while then a left down Turuga St to Bobbin Head Road with the new runner on the block, Lurch,giving the normal front runners of Superglue, Benny and Music Man some competition. There was a solid check at Banockburn, but no Scotsman or Robert the Bruce to celebrate the great battle; Last Card Looney, back from his travels, was onto the trail as quick as a flash as the pack headed over to and around the southern boundary of Bannockburn Park.

9 Australian History Corner 39 th Battalion an Australian Story Moishe passed on an amazing story about one of the volunteer militia from the 39 th Battalion and the Battle of Kokoda From the FITZ files, SMH July 5 19 year old Joe Bishop gets the call up and becomes part of the 39 th Battalion sent to PNG. The night before he departs, his girlfriend, Elaine Cobram gives him 3 precious things that she has been saving for months before he departs to keep him safe The gifts from Elaine included a silver wrist watch with an inscription To Joe From Elaine,1941 As a number of you might know, the 39 th Battalion met the might of the Japanese army as they advanced south from Gona iin 1942 The 39 th met the Japanese Imperial Imperial Army at the village of Kokoda on in one of the most incredible battles of WW2 invovling only Australian troops. During the fight, a mortar shell landed so close to Joe that his watch, given to him only months earlier, was blown off his wrist due to the force of the explosion. Fast forward to 2004 when Peter Fitzsimons publishes his Kokoda novel where he refers to Joe and the watch that Elaine had given to him. Fast forward several years afterwards. Joe married Elaine at the end of the war and one day the phone rang The old voice on the other end of the line, sounding like gravel sliding down a tin roof, asks Joe: "Are you the 'Joe Dawson' in FitzSimons' book?"
