3 From the Board Wow, it s summer already and it s been a very busy year so far at KSPS. I hope you ll take the time to read the profile of our 2018 Volunteer of the Year, Tom McArthur, found on the centerspread. Tom and our other wonderful volunteers have put in over 4,359 hours of service for KSPS in the past year. These are very dedicated and delightful supporters who staff the front desk, work in the office, take calls for pledge campaigns and serve on the Board of Directors and the Community Advisory Board. Volunteers make events happen like last year s visit by The Wall That Heals and FitKids Day. If KSPS had to pay to staff all of these functions, it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. No kidding! A huge thank you to Tom McArthur and hundreds of others who volunteer. If you d like to become part of our team of volunteers, call and join us in making 2018 the best year yet! Ann Hurst Chair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors Where in the World is Ross Poldark? We know we know even though we re up to our khaki pockets in the Summer of Adventure a time to get up, get out and go explore that big, bright, beautiful world we live in one burning question eclipses almost everything else in the vast and wonderful realm that is Public Television: WHERE IS POLDARK?! Well fear not, because as August rides off into the summer sunset, we ll be hearing the not-too-distant hoofbeats of Poldark Season 4 on KSPS! In fact, we are going to start September off with a bang on Sunday, September 2 with a seven-hour Poldark Binge Watch of Season 3 episodes! (Don t forget, too, that any of you who really missed the boat can catch the rest of the encore episodes of Season 2 in July and August Sundays at 7 pm.) It will be a chance to get up to speed with any episodes you might have missed and help lay the groundwork for the Premiere of Season 4: on Sunday, September 30! Get ready! Season 4 just kicked off in the U.K. in June and the buzz is already a-buzzing on the Internet and social media, right from the opening scene! It s going to be a season to remember and you ll get to see it all right here on KSPS! KSPS Community Advisory Board The KSPS Community Advisory Board provides valuable input to the Friends of KSPS (the station s governing Board) about KSPS programming, community service initiatives and how the station s outreach and other decisions impact the communities we serve. 10 Thanks For All You Do There s never really a bad time to say Thank You. Thank you is a way to acknowledge someone or some effort big or small.. from opening the door to helping a person in need, or just being there when you need them. If you re reading this, we thank you for your support of the work we do at KSPS. But this time, we re thanking three people who have been a key piece of what we are, where we are and how we got there. All three are departing members of the Board of the Friends of KSPS and they ll be truly missed. Gary Stokes Kelly Konkright is an attorney for Lukins and Annis; and during his time on the Board, he was instrumental in helping us with the transfer of the Broadcast License from Spokane Public Schools to the Friends of KSPS. In that role he advised us on legal and financial matters that were key to a smooth and orderly transition; and as part of the Board Finance Committee, he s provided keen insight on our investments in the future. Kathleen Mackenzie has been a longtime Friend of KSPS. As someone who started the Spokane World Affairs Council, she already knew about the window to the world PBS and KSPS provide every day. She joined the board right before we became a community licensee. Over the years, she has led our Development Committee, helping us find ways to fund our valuable and essential mission. She s also been a great volunteer at events, from pledge drives to Downton Abbey screenings. The MVP of this graduating class is Pati Dahmen. She was part of the board when we started the license transfer process, was elected Vice-President in her first year and served several years as Board President. You ve seen her columns here in Prevue for the past few years. She always made sure that we stayed true to our mission. But she did more than talk the talk: she walked the walk in every way. Here s a small list: Pledge volunteer Pledge volunteer organizer FitKids Day Volunteer Recruiter for Board members and Community Advisory Board Members Never missed a Board meeting Attends most, if not all Committee meetings Major Donor And tireless cheerleader for KSPS and Public Television In 2016, she was named KSPS Volunteer of the Year, which was awarded at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. We didn t have to check to make sure she d be there to receive the honor she s never missed one. And there are many, many more stories and examples; but she s probably getting really annoyed with me right now. 10 Save the date! A morning chock-full of fun, outdoor family activities on the football field at Ferris High School. Thanks to all of these Board members who give of their time, their talent and their treasure, to ensure KSPS remains a strong and vital part of all the communities we serve. We wish them well. Sincerely, Gary Stokes KSPS President and General Manager

11 You Keep KSPS Strong and Bright KSPS is the beacon of thoughtful and thought-provoking media, and that beacon is powered by you. We are so grateful to you. You have chosen to support the programs that expand minds and open worlds to everyone that embrace life s most incredible moments that take you on enlightening journeys. For KSPS to continue to grow as your community beacon, we must remain financially strong. We are now less than three months away from the end of this fiscal year. At this point, we have raised about three-fourths of the funding needed for the programming bills that will soon be due. That last 25% is vital to keeping the programs we all value on the air. Your extra gift, now, will help us meet that critical goal; and we ve included an envelope in this issue of PREVUE to make things easy. Your annual Friends of KSPS membership contribution is the lifeblood of this station, but if you can help us with an additional gift, now is the time! Tom McArthur Named Volunteer of the Year for 2018 On May 2, KSPS held an ice cream social and awards ceremony to celebrate the wonderful work of our tremendous volunteers. At this ceremony, Tom McArthur was introduced as the 2018 Volunteer of the Year. Tom has been sharing his time and many talents with KSPS for more than 20 years. Undoubtedly you have seen his cheerful smile during our membership campaigns. Tom is one of our longest-serving volunteer on-air hosts. Through the years, Tom has also provided voice narration for many Northwest Profile episodes and has been the voice of many of our on-air spots. In Tom s words, it s hard to say no to In Memory of something that you love. When KSPS calls Martha E. Adams and asks, 'Hey, can you help with this or From Al and Diane Clark that,' I find a way to say 'Yes!' Calgary, AB KSPS General Manager Gary Stokes (R) presents the 2018 Volunteer of the Year award to longtime station volunteer Tom McArthur. June Membership Campaign Thanks KSPS is thankful to the following groups, individuals and vendors who gave of themselves to make sure our June Membership Campaign was a success: Groups Eastern Washington Genealogical Society Free Rein Team Blaze Team Friends In his spare time, Tom loves to travel, composes music and is a local history buff. Thank you for all you do, Tom. KSPS is a better place because of you! SAJB aquifer education and awareness programs reach out to citizens, schools and businesses to protect our sole source aquifer. During the summer months, water consumption increases dramatically due to lawn watering. Here are some water saving tips that will help keep water in the Spokane river and reduce your water bill. Water lawns in the morning or evening to reduce water loss from evaporation. Adjust your sprinklers to water your lawn and not streets or sidewalks. Raise your lawnmower. Taller grass needs less water and less-frequent mowing. Replace turf with native and drought tolerant plants. The City of Spokane is offering a landscape rebate program of up to $500 for turf removal. Call or visit waterstewardship.org. SAJB appreciates KSPS viewers. Working together, we can protect and conserve our drinking water and the Spokane River. PBS Kids 24/7 Union Pacific Foundation 19
