I have an update on the special baby that I asked you to pray for at the Pahrump Rally. Walter David had his first open heart surgery shortly before Thanksgiving, (doctors were hoping to hold off until he was a year old) there were some setbacks that kept him there for a month but he was home for Christmas, I held him and fed him and thanked God for this blessing. His next expected surgery will be in Oct 15 at the ripe old age of one-year. That is unless he has another emergency that necessitates another earlier intervention. His diagnosis is severe Tetralogy of Fallot. ( He and his family STILL need your prayers. Thank you. Now on an even more personal note. Jim and I sold our stick home, much quicker than I anticipated. We have now joined the many of you who are full-timing it. We need to join F-Troop and learn about what we have gotten ourselves into. Our new address can be found on this page in three spots. and phones still work. Please contact us with any good hints you have. Furniture and lots of stuff are in storage. Many of you have been asking for a new Membership Directory. It is my plan to put out one by June but I NEED YOUR HELP to make it a CORRECT directory. 14 RV Safety Getting To Know The Fire Department By Mary Ann Snider BU# 7859 you travel. Many of us have a limited understanding of the services provided by local fire departments. Once you realize all the services fire departments might provide, you will have additional safety resources to use whenever and wherever First and foremost, fire departments will help in case you have a fire in your rig. They want you to get out of your rig safely and not worry about trying to put out the fire. Their motto is "Lives first, property second". During a fire safety seminar at the recent BOA rally the local fire department offered to help anyone who was concerned about how to open their emergency exit and/or practice getting out of their emergency exit. Not every fire department may be willing to do this, so check with them first. Most fire departments will also be happy to examine your fire extinguishers and answer any questions you have. EMS units are often housed at fire stations. This is an important resource to use, especially in rural areas, for emergency medical problems. Our chapter listened to a fire department presentation at one of our rallies. The fire department advised that if any of us needed to be transported to the nearest hospital, we should consider bypassing the local clinic with only one doctor on staff and come directly to the fire department. A few hours after the presentation one of our members began feeling ill. We took her to the fire department, not the medical clinic. The EMS staff did lab tests and felt she might be having a heart attack. They transported her to the hospital 60 miles away where she made a complete recovery. Fire Departments with EMS units often do blood pressure monitoring. Some even have special health programs for seniors. A few of our friends have experienced a major plumbing problem in their rig. They needed to get the water out of the rig and dry the carpet/tile quickly. Again, the fire department may be able to help by lending fans/pumps to get rid of the water. In some areas flash floods are a problem. Many fire departments provide free sand bags to use in case of flooding. They can help in case of water rescues. Fire Departments will often provide speakers at a camp out or a get together. In the winter months some clubs meet at a local restaurant instead of having a camp out. This would be a great place for a fire safety presentation, especially before the beginning of the new camping season. Ask the fire department to come to one of your camp outs and give members a chance to put out a fire. Many people, especially women, have never used a fire extinguisher. The fire department will start a controlled fire and donate a fire extinguisher to use for the presentation. it is important that you do not let your members try to put out the fire using their own extinguishers. Many of us still have only the one extinguisher that came with our rig. If it is used it will have to be recharged/replaced. Make sure you get the permission of the park management before you do this. Let them know the fire department will have a fire truck on the premise. Google Mac the fire guy, a retired fireman and certified safety instructor for important RV fire safety information. Mac has several useful articles you can duplicate and use as part of your chapter safety program. Be sure to view his video on how to get out of your emergency window safely. Check his schedule to see if he will be doing a RV fire safety program near you. He starts controlled fires at RV rallies and ask for volunteers from the audience to put out the fire. Take advantage of the resources he provides to increase your chance of surviving a RV fire. How can we thank firemen for the many services they provide? Remember, they miss many family functions, work in extreme weather conditions, risk their lives as first responders, etc. Perhaps, you could drop off extra produce from your garden, take a batch of homemade cookies or just a simple note thanking them for their service. Another way to say "thank you" is to participate in their efforts to help the members of their community. Many departments collect blankets, fans, food to help the less fortunate. Most fire departments work with local RV parks to address fire safety issues. Fire departments complain that some parks have not provided them with an updated map of the park or that the sites are not clearly marked. They ask that RVers turn on the lights on the rig/tow vehicle and have someone with a flashlight guide them to the site where there is a problem. If you holding functions in a building at a camp out it is important to make sure the fire extinguishers are charged. If not, make sure you bring your safety concerns to the immediate attention of the management. The author welcomes your comments and suggestions for future topics related to all aspects of RV safety. Contact her at snide12002@aol.com. 14 JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER

15 Creative Cooking by Robert and Janet Miller BU# 1614 Hello, the last few months we have been doing those regular type and style of recipes. Note: the heading above. This month is really, really CREATIVE. We will start with a recipe concoction from the BU Treasurer Pat Hoffman and go from there. Robar had to get his concoction in so it follows. PEAS PEANUTS PICKLES SALAD? 1 C fresh frozen peas ½ C salted peanuts ⅓ C sweet pickles, chopped 1 tbls prepared mustard ⅓ C sour cream 1 tsp sugar ITALIAN SAUSAGE TORTELLINI SOUP from Pat Hoffman Break up and brown 1 lb Italian Turkey Sausage (remove casing first). Add: and sauté until tender 1 C chopped onion and 2 sliced cloves garlic. Add the following: 5 C chicken stock and ½ C red wine, ½ C water, 2 cans (15 oz) chopped tomatoes, 1 C sliced carrots, 1 can kidney beans (rinsed and drained), ½ can (rinsed and drained) Frenchcut green beans, ½ tsp oregano, ½ tsp dried basil. Bring to boil simmer uncovered 30 minutes. Stir in 3 Tbls chopped parsley, 1½ C sliced zucchini and 8 oz cheese tortellini ravioli. Simmer additional minutes until pasta is done. Serves 6+. Pat suggests you check the frig for anything else that could be added. Eat hearty and enjoy! ROBAR S FREEZER SOUP The savior of all need to serve leftovers cooks. What is it? Place a container in the freezer, about the size for a hearty family soup. Add all, yes all, leftovers into the container, now is no time to be squeamish. The meats, vegetables, gravies, breads, ever the water from cooking the vegetables. Just keep adding until it s full. Then thaw and combine with a both and heat. Voila! You have freezer soup! Cook peas according to package instructions. Drain and place in bowl. Combine peanuts and pickles in a blender or grinder. Blend and add the peas. vmix other ingredients. Add and mix with the PPPs. Serves 4. 1 (15 oz) can black beans 1 (4 oz) can chopped ripe olives ⅓ C onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbls olive oil 2 tsp lime juice ¼ tsp salt ⅛ tsp pepper MONTANA CAVIAR ¼ tsp cumin ¼ tsp red pepper⅛ tsp dry mustard 1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese 2 hard cooked eggs, chopped 3 green onion with tops, sliced Drain beans and olives. Combine with all ingredients, except cream cheese, eggs and green onion. Let set in refrigerator for 2 hours. Spread ream cheese on 9-inch serving plate to edge. Spoon bean mixture over cheese. Arrange chopped eggs in ring around edgeof plate on beans. Sprinkle green onion in center. After eating this, you will quit that other caviar (really fish eggs). JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER 15

16 Technical Tips #77 By Rob Lowe BU# 3524 Should I leave my Inverter on? I am frequently asked this question and typically I respond with a few probative questions before trying to provide an answer. Before delving into the answer, let s look at Inverters and what they do. An inverter takes 12 Volt DC power from coach batteries and inverts it to provide 120 Volt AC power to allow TV s, microwaves, electric refrigerators and so on so that these appliances and equipment will operate without the need for a 120 volt power cord connection or a generator running to supply AC power. Inverters have greatly improved over the last few years however the principle of operation has not changed. They do not make electricity, only refashion it from the battery power source. For every amp of power required at 120V they draw about 12 amps from the 12V batteries. About 90 percent of the power consumed is turned into usable energy. There is some power loss in the inversion process. There are two broad categories of Inverters: smaller (typically 300 to 1000 watt) units that supply power on many RV s for the TV and entertainment systems, and larger (2000 to 3500 watt) units capable of supplying power for most AC appliances. Most smaller units do not provide any battery charging function. Battery charging on RVs equipped with the smaller inverters is provided by the RV Converter, a unit that takes the 120V AC power from the power cord or AC Generator and converts it to 12 Volt DC to charge the batteries and operate lights and other 12 volt equipment. Newer converters are capable of fully charging the coach batteries and some provide a battery charge maintenance function. Larger inverters, found in many more modern RV s, have an Inverter-Charger which combines a larger capacity Inverter (typically 2000 to 3500 watts) with a 3 stage charger that is capable of fully charging and maintaining the larger coach battery banks units when a source of AC is connected. In addition, these units have automatic transfer switches that transfer the AC load from the power cord or generator to the inverter in the event of a power loss without user involvement. Thus this system maintains the full function of the AC components connected to the Inverter in the event of planned (removing the power cord from the pedestal) or unplanned (incoming power problems) loss of power. Often the coach AC electrical system has a power management function and an automatic generator start (AGS) function integrated into the electrical system as well. 16 JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER Tech Tips With this explanation, I ll address the additional questions I pose when asked Should I leave my Inverter on? First, I ask if the RV has a combined inverter/charger. If it does, then the charger will full charge the batteries and maintain them when a source of AC power is available. This is important since the batteries, which are the inverter s power source need to be at or close to full charge to provide reasonable power longevity when no other source of AC is available. Secondly I ask Why do you ask which gets to the underlying questions that the RVer has about using the inverter. Once I know what is expected, it is a lot easier to answer the primary question. With more coaches being equipped with residential refrigerators learning how to work with an inverter becomes more critical, since they are powered off and inverter when travelling down the road. Thus asking a question about whether the coach has a residential refrigerator is critical to understanding the big picture. The last question I pose is Does your coach have an Auto Gen Start function? If the answer is yes then generator will automatically start (provided that function is activated) to charge the batteries if they get down to the point of requiring recharging. Leaving the inverter on, provides continuity of power. If the power coming from the power cord at a campground, is interrupted, the TV will continue to function, the residential refrigerator will continue to operate (or the LP/Electric fridge will switch to LP) and life goes on pretty much uninterrupted until the batteries drop to the point where they need to be recharged. That is why it is important to have the Auto Gen Start function activated so that in the event you do not know you have lost shore power the batteries will only be drained to a safe level, and then be recharged. If you are leaving a campground and you turn off the breaker and disconnect, all AC equipment powered by the Inverter continues to operate. While driving the coach the batteries will be recharged by the engine driven alternator. Leaving the inverter on when using the coach provides continuity of AC power, so clocks retain their display and small appliances can be run whether you have another source of AC power or not. When the coach is stored or not being used, it is important to turn off the inverter since it is usually directly connected to the batteries and likely not controlled by the Coach Battery Disconnect switch. It will continue to draw power off the batteries unless this step is taken. To sum up, if you have an inverter/charger, and an Auto Gen Start (AGS) feature on the RV and will turn off the inverter when not using the coach, then I recommend leaving the Inverter ON when using the coach. If you have any issues with batteries, do not monitor the battery state of charge and manually start the generator when batteries get low, or are uncertain about the automatic transfer of loads from the power cord source to the Inverter, then turning it off most of the time, and on for short periods when not connected to another power source may be the best solution for you. With more coaches being equipped with residential refrigerators learning how to work with an inverter becomes more critical, since they are powered off and inverter when travelling down the road. 17 Chapter Happenings WESTERN REGION DESERT BOUNDERS December 2014 by Darlene Spalding #2899 The Desert Bounders were once again at Lake Park RV Resort in Lake Elsinore. Our chapter loves to play a game called hand and foot and in our version you need to have a book of 7 s and if you have to discard a 7 then you are required to put a quarter in a piggy bank. We then took that money, amazingly it was $31 worth, and had a Christmas pizza party. After pizza and salad was consumed we had a gift exchange with passing of gifts to either left or right while a Christmas story was read that contained these words. Afterwards more cards and the piggy bank once again started to accumulate quarters. Our chapter adopted some children that live at this RV resort in rented 5 th wheels. This park has a very caring manager who provided us with names and sizes for 4 children that probably wouldn t have much of a Christmas without some intervention. In November we divided up names and some members bought toys and others clothing for each child. Another member bought PJ s, while another crocheted slippers for all. Each child will also get a stuffed Christmas stocking. We will be purchasing prepared holiday meals along with shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, and some staple food items for each family. All of this will be delivered on Dec. 22 and the presents for the kids will be held in the office until the 24 th so the children can be surprised with the Christmas gifts. We are fortunate that we are able to give back and to provide Christmas for some children in need. I am the current Desert Bounders President and I couldn t be prouder of what we have been able to put together for these families GOLD BOUNDER Dec outing at Vineyard R. V by Barbara & John Patrick #3148 We had our first outing as the Gold Bounders after combing the Rebounders and The Gold Country Roos, with John & Barbara Patrick, Jim and Ellen Londo as Wagon masters. The weather was rainy at the Vineyard R.V. Park in Vacaville, Ca. most of the time, but we had the nice club house, to play games and visited. We has 10 rigs for our Christmas/ Thanksgiving camp out. Patrick, Londo, Codde, Miller, Collins, Stroh, White, Ikerd, Avila, Petty, Hutchinson all had Turkey Dinner. Had two catered dinner. Pot luck breakfast with leftovers for our third dinner. Our Christmas dinner had a surprise visit with Santa Claus and his elves to handed out gifts for all.. Also had a flasher part of the time. The Miller s showed up with their new 2015 Bounder what a beauty. Good time had by all. % % % % KANGA ROOS December 2014 by Cliff & Lois Benzel #10222 It was a dark and stormy night the 3 rd day of our annual Christmas outing at the 49er RV resort at Plymouth, CA, at least that was the forecast. This was predicted to be the worst storm to hit Northern California in six years. The very strong winds and heavy rain didn t start until early Thursday morning, our scheduled departure day. It blew so hard we feared that trees would topple. Because of the impending storm, several rigs left early and missed our final dinner, and some stayed an extra day. Thirty two members and four guests in 18 rigs and 2 cottages attended our holiday themed outing. The clubhouse was decorated with a large Christmas tree, a warm fire and other festive decorations making a cozy haven for socializing and playing games. We enjoyed opening night hearty hors d oeuvres, a pizza night, and a wonderful chicken cordon bleu dinner catered by Joe Waltman. Santa (Jerry Codde #9466) and his elf (Yvonne Codde #9466) made a surprise visit on the final night to hand out goodies and candy canes. The holiday rig decoration challenge was won by Jerry & Yvonne Codde #9466, Stan and Sharon White #10378, and Christine Sorenson # At our business meeting new chapter leaders were elected, they are Randy Trujillo- president, Harold Nicholson #8552 vice-president, JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER 17 V

VAGABOUNDERS November 2014 The November campout was held at Rancho Los Coches in Lakeside, CA hosted by Jim and Betty Schneider BU# Betty s Thanksgiving Turkey was again cooked in her ancient Weber Kettle which was attended to by Jim. Present were the Pat & Becky, Frank & Jane and new members Ray & Edna Derringer BU# We were again missing Pat & Lyle Brill and others due to continuing health problems. Our prayers are with them during this challenging time. The weather was great as was the company. We ate too much, visited and played a lot of games. 18 JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER V

19 Chapter Happenings Our next campout will be hosted by Pat & Becky at the Chula Vista Resort and Marina. We will be joined by Executive Vice-President Bob Weithofer and his lovely wife Pat. VAGABOUNDERS December 2014 By Betty Schneider BU# 2907 We gathered at Chula Vista RV Resort & Marina for our annual Christmas campout. Most of us made it a long week-end starting on Thursday when we went to the local restaurant for All you can eat Fish & Chips. We had quite a turnout. Pat & Becky Brombach BU# 9755 our hosts, Jim & Betty Schneider BU# 2907, Frank Orr & Jane Klomp BU# 347, our special guests Bob (BU Exec. VP) & Pat Weithofer BU# Don & Georgya Crane BU# 10003, Mike & Clydia Beaudet and Dale & Andree Evarts Friends of Vagabounders, new members Ray & Edna Derringer BU# and Mel & Patsy Hamel BU# Former members Jim & Shirley Berardini BU# and their son Mike came for dinner and visiting. We were a very lively group. We were again missing Lyle & Pat Brill BU# 322. Lyle has had a very bad year with one thing after another. We are all praying for a better year to come with much improved health. At our special meeting (we usually do not hold a business meeting in December) we again discuss the 2016 BU rally being hosted by the Vagabounders. The Schneiders and Brombachs attended the December campout and meeting of the LaBounders to discuss the possibility of some joint campouts and their assistance with the 2016 Rally. Our Christmas dinner and gift exchange was as exciting as ever. Lots of food with the star being the ham provided by the Brombachs. Delicious Becky! We had every side dish we could want and such wonderful desserts we all vowed to stay away from all scales until next year. The gifts were snatched from each other as each number was called a second time. I hope everyone was happy with what they received. I know I was, I got the popcorn set!! Following the gift exchange we took a tour of the park where many of the residents totally out do themselves and their neighbors with really extensive decorations and light displays. Our next campout will be our annual trek to Quartzsite, AZ. Hope to see ALL of you there. EASTERN REGION TRI-STATE BRIGADE (W PA, E. OH. WV) by Lorraine Soplinski Where has the time gone, it seems camping season just ended and here it is Holiday time already. Our Christmas celebration was held at Parente's Restorante, December 13th in Trafford PA. We had six couples in attendance. Mother Nature was kind enough to give us good weather for traveling, no snow, but a little drizzle. Bob & Marilynn Reynolds #5327, hosts for the event, presented each of us with a holiday votive candle holder and treated everyone to delicious appetizers before we chose our meal from the menu. After we all had our fill, we departed to Reynolds new home for dessert and our gift exchange. Once we arrived we all wanted a tour of the house, which was decorated beautifully throughout. Marilynn set out drinks and desserts to enjoy, then we all drew numbers to see who would pick a gift first. It's fun to see who will steal a gift from someone or pick another to open. There are always a couple that get passed around a few times before the person who gets it three times can keep it. We then settled down for more goodies and getting caught up on what everyone had be up to since our last campout. Soon it was time to depart for home with good wishes for the Holidays. Everyone had a wonderful time, looking forward to Spring when we meet again. JAN/FEB BOUNDER SOUNDER 19 V

21 BOUNDERS UNITED INC Bounders United is an organization that was formed in August, There are approximately 600 member rigs throughout the United States, primarily for Bounder RV owners! In order to meet the needs and fellowship of its members in our vast nation, there are three regions, Eastern, Central, and Western, each with its own Vice President, who serves on the National Board of Directors. There is also a Special Interest VP for chapters that follow a particular interest; they are not geographic. Members of Bounders United receive a National Directory of all members and a bi-monthly newsletter called the Bounder Sounder. The Bounder Sounder contains greetings from the President, announcements for upcoming special events, occasional advertisements for RV Caravan trips, various "household" hints, interesting stories relating to members' experiences and/or travels, recipes, and two or three pages of technical information. Bounders United has one large rally convention - each year that is open to all B U members. There are a number of seminars for us to attend, vendors for shopping, meals to share, professional entertainment, and a great deal of visiting throughout the rally with other members from all over the country. Rallies are alternately held in different sections of the country from coast to coast, in order to accommodate as many members as possible. Each region has many chapters to further enhance the sharing of members' experiences. Chapters generally meet once a month (depending on geographical location), and a listing of the chapters, dates of their outings, destinations and Wagonmaster (host) contacts are printed in the Bounder Sounder. So, as you travel the high-ways, you can check your Bounder Sounder and see if there is a local chapter outing somewhere along the way and drop by for a visit or a weekend. If you have no particular personal trips planned for a while, then you can always look forward to meeting with fellow chapter members each month and enjoy a new and interesting place to visit "close to home". So, please give it some thought. We highly recommend joining Bounders United. An application is on the re-verse side of this letter. Lots of additional information can be obtained about Bounders United by accessing its Web page at including archived copies of past Bounder Sounders. If you wish further information about Bounders United in general or a chapter in your area, or anywhere across the country, feel free to contact us at the number below.
