CTCI chapter 75 Roanoke, Virginia Chartered by the Virginia Corporation Commission September August Meeting Minutes: The August meeting of the club was held at the Greenwood preceded by breakfast at 8:30 on August 15. Club President, Richard Garrett, welcomed a good turnout of 20 members and thanked them for the unusual birthday present--a hand held, battery powered, extra-low volume yodeling machine Straight Outta Dollar Tree!! Nothing but the best for our fearless leader! He had talked to Jim VanDyke earlier in the week and said that Jim was progressing a little every day but still has a long way to go. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his wife and care giver, Wilma. Olde Salem Days: This will be on September 12 for those interested. Richard has entrance forms. September Meeting and Program: The September meeting will be at the usual place and time September 19 at the Greenwood. There was discussion about the pending arrangements to visit the local car collection of Dr. Tom Richardson in Stewartsville. Rodney McNeil had talked to Dr. Richardson, and he preferred the visit to be after the September meeting. Therefore, Richard will lead the members present from the Greenwood to this private collection. We will plan to leave the Greenwood about 10:30 and it will take about ½ hour to get there. Rodney says that he has a total of between 50 and 60 cars, of which 15 to 20 are restored. It should be an interesting morning and a nice easy event to get to, so make plans now to devote the whole morning + to the meeting. October Meeting: The October meeting will be at the Greenwood at the regular time.

2 Page 2 Blue Ridge Folklife Festival: The Folk life Festival, as usual, is the 4 th Saturday in October. Last year, the weather was beautiful, and the turnout of cars and general spectators reflected that. As most of us know, the weather can be a problem at that time of year. The nice thing about Ferrum is that the entrance is free for two if you bring your 1975 or older automobile, and you don t have to pre-register. This festival keeps growing every year, and there is plenty to see, do and eat! If you have never been there, you are missing a lot of fun, but get there early to avoid traffic tie ups. Richard generally, leads a group from Roanoke, and hopefully he will be able to do so again this year. Christmas Banquet: The Christmas banquet is always on the second Saturday of December and we have made reservations again at the Coach and Four. The banquet room is tight for our group but their minimum number requirements are reasonable for us to meet and the food is good. Richard noted that it is time for us to start thinking about our normal $500 charitable donation which we finalize at the banquet. If you have any ideas or suggestions, bring them up at the September meeting. Thunderbird Week and Pipestem Oldies Weekend Thunderbird Week was conceived this spring as a more doable week-long event in the southern Appalachians as an alternative to the long, long drive to Albuquerque for the only CTCI Regional this year. The idea was to have a day or two at a few destinations with relatively short drives (the longest being 250 miles) and visiting places we had either never seen or had not been to in a long time. We wanted to make it a Thunderbird immersion week as well, starting from the Greenwood after the August meeting and finishing at Pipestem for the Oldies Weekend. Steve and Linda Meadows, John and Joyce Leedy, and Russ and Barbara Mac- Donald did the whole trip with Sonny and Nancy Westmoreland joining us for the first stop in Asheville and the destination at Pipestem. All of us had a GREAT time in spite of some significant rain all week and a couple of mechanical problems. The attached pictures tell the tale in color. What follows is a brief description of the trip! The weather was fine going to Asheville, our first stop, and for the day we spent there. All had been to the Biltmore, so we spent our day there cruising downtown. It was Sunday, and there were lots of interesting people, shops, galleries, restaurants, bars, old early 1900 s era office buildings, and even a Vegan festival. We ate lunch at a restaurant that Sonny and Nancy like, and John surprised all the guys with car-color-coded T-shirts (see pictures). The next day, a bad battery and bad fuel pump left two on the side of the interstate, but a very nice state highway patrol officer escorted us to the nearest Advance Auto for the parts needed for repair, and we were off again in a couple hours with no further mechanical problems.

3 Page 3 The rain began Monday afternoon (from Knoxville to Chattanooga, our second destination). It did not really let up until Thursday afternoon. However, we got used to it, and it never held us back at all. We spent two days in Chattanooga. There is a lot to see there, and we tried to do it all. We visited the Coker Automobile and the Towing and Recovery Museums on the day it rained during the day, and we went to the Aquarium, Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel/museum, and Moon Pie store the next day. We also were able to go to Lookout Mountain and a very interesting diorama show about the 3 Civil War battles fought here. Chattanooga is a very nice and picturesque place with lots to do. On Thursday, we had a relatively short run to Jonesborough, the oldest town in Tennessee and the capital of the state of Franklin (which never came about). It was very picturesque and is going to be the sight of the 2016 Mockingbird Run sponsored by the Knoxville Club. It had none of the attractions of Chattanooga but made a pleasant couple of hour visit prior to our overnight at nearby Johnson City. (Of course it rained most of the way that day too and if it did not rain during the day in Chattanooga, it rained at night!). Finally, Friday afternoon at Pipestem to join our fellow club members: Sonny and Nancy Westmoreland, Rodney and Norma McNeil, Don and Judy Thomas, Bill and Sue VanName, Buck and Bev Morgan, Charlie and Marie Chattin, and Larry Semones and Jeannie. From Friday on, the weather was ideal. As usual, we got to the show area at 7:00 a.m. Saturday to stake out the area around the park headquarters. We had a great showing of 9 little birds, and they all looked fine (see pictures). The total car show turnout was good, with about 270 registered. As always, good sausage biscuits in the morning and hot dogs at noon with plenty of interesting automobiles in between. Ours was the best club turnout by far, as it often is. We all had dinner at Brandon s BBQ restaurant before many of us took in the oldies concert at the amphitheater. Sunday was the denouement as everyone left, but it was especially poignant for those of us who bonded so well on our adventure. Russ MacDonald Join CTCI Go to: Call:

5 From the President: In memory of: Alison Parker Adam Ward Southern Flavors Pound Cake Page 5 Ingredients: 3 cups all purpose flour 3 cups granulated sugar 1 ½ cups butter softened (3 sticks) 1 cup buttermilk 4 large eggs, at room temperature ½ tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. each Happy Home pure vanilla extract, natural almond flavor, natural lemon flavor, imitation coconut flavor and imitation butter-nut flavor Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 325 deg. F. Eggs, butter and buttermilk should be at room temperature before mixing. 2. Measure 3 level cups of flour into medium mixing bowl. Add baking powder. Use a whisk and fully mix flour and baking together. Set aside. 3. Measure the buttermilk into a small mixing bowl. Add vanilla extract, almond, lemon, coconut & butter-nut flavorings. Mix well, set aside. 4. Place softened butter in a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, cream the butter slightly. Add the sugar, cream butter and sugar together well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating lightly on low speed after each addition just to incorporate the egg. 5. Alternate adding flour buttermilk flour until incorporated, mixing as little as possible. Do not over-mix. It s even better to mix by hand in the final stage. 6. Grease and lightly flour your baking pan. Spoon batter into the pan. Level the top of the batter inside the pan. 7. Bake for 60 to 75 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Turn cake out of pan onto wire rack. Cool completely before slicing.

The recipe was printed on boxes of Rice Krispies in 1941; it had been published in newspapers earlier. She died June 9, 1996, she was 92. The recipe remains the same to this day.
