The Storm Family Peder Pedersen Storm Just Pedersen Storm Peder Justesen Storm Frederik Christian Valdemar Storm Frederik Peter Evald Hinnerup Storm
This booklet is a biography of Peder Pedersen Storm and descendants. From the early 1970s to the mid 1990s my father Kai Madsen worked on the family tree of the Morell family and related branches. He compiled a number of booklets which were distributed to family members both in Denmark, Holland and in the US. This compendium is a translation of his work on the Storm family with additional comments and especially images. In general, pages consist of two sheets: a scan of my father's original text in Danish on one sheet and my translation on the next sheet. What I feel is missing in his work is the sources. Apart from frequently visits to national archives, Kai had great contacts to Preben Engsig-Karup, to Jay Larsen, Henning Kristensen and to Gerda Kristensen, who all contributed greatly. I wish to acknowledge Lise Larsen Pyles who has contributed with images scanned by husband Bill Pyles in San Antonio, Texas. Dublin, Ireland, January 2017 Poul Madsen (son of Kai Madsen)

- 3 - Slægten Storm Peder Pedersen Storm was born on the island Fyn around 1722.Having left school, he finished as an apprentice shoemaker around February On the 19 Nov 1751, aged 29, he married the then 18 y.o. Maria Elisabeth Thygesdatter (free translation: Thyge's daughter) Knabe in Assens Kirke (Assens Church). Having been married for seven years, they now had their first child and after twenty years they had in all seven children as follows: Anna Elisabeth born 20 Aug 1758 Maren - 28 Nov 1761 (died 19 Dec 1768) Just Pedersen Storm - 02 May 1766 Pernille - 03 Dec 1769 Maren - 16 Feb 1773 Tyge Pedersen Storm - 09 Apr 1775 Charlotte Elisabeth - 15 Mar 1778 According to the church book Anna Elisabeth carried her younger sister Charlotte Elisabeth at the baptism ceremony in church. At the census 1 Feb 1787 the family lived in Damgade 6 (translation: 6 Pond Street) in Assens. Here, the father had his shoemaker workshop. Only the youngest two children still lived at home. The mother died on 4 October 1787 aged 55 years, while the father Peder Pedersen Storm died on 13 Mar 1796 aged 74 years. He was buried on 18 March.

- 4 - Just Pedersen Storm was born on 2 May 1766 (pronounce his name Just as in Yoost). He was the son of shoemaker Peder Pedersen Storm and wife Maria Elisabeth Thygesdatter Knabe. Like his father, Just became shoemaker. On 12 Oct 1792 he was married to 28 years old Ane Jørgensdatter in Assens Church. On 1 July 1793 they had their first baby, a girl who was baptized Maria Elisabeth Justsdatter (Just's daughter). Two years later on 23 Aug 1795 Ane had a boy who was baptized Jørgen Justesen Storm. Three years went and then Ane on 27 July 1798 had twins (girls). On 16 Aug they were baptised Maren and Anne Margrethe. The girls however did not live till the end of the year. The year after Ane once again gave labour to twins, again girls. They were born on 14 Aug 1799 and baptized Dorthe Anne Margrethe and Edel Margrethe. Dorthe died on 18 Sept only one month old. Thus the family had lost 3 children within a year. According to the census of 1 February 1801 Just Pedersen Storm was a shoemaker and the family lived Korsgade 3 in Assens and that the family had 5 members; the parents and the children Marie Elisabeth, Jørgen and Edel Margrethe. Next year, on 29 September, Ane had a boy who was baptised Peder Justesen Storm. Both boys became shoemakers and travelled to Copenhagen where they settled down. The family possibly left Assens, which had many shoemakers. Where the family went is not known.

- 5 - Peder Justesen Storm was born on 29 Sept 1802 and was baptised in the church in Assens the same year. He had his Confirmation on the 15th Sunday after Easter 1817 and started apprenticeship as a shoemaker. Having completed apprenticeship, Peder travelled to Copenhagen, where he settled down. On 13 October 1827 his hometown sent him his certificate for birth, baptism, confirmation and vaccination. This certificate shown in appendix 2 he needed for applying for citizenship as a shoemaker. He received the certificate on 19 January 1828 (also shown in appendix 2). Later the same year on 12 August he was filed in the "Copulation protocol" and paid 4 Rigsbanksdaler (Danish currency before the Kroners) and 36 skilling (kind of shilling) in order to get married in Trinitatis Church to 29 y.o. Bertha Christine Rasmussen, born in Copenhagen. They settled down in Myntergade matricle nbr 44. Here, on 20 May 1829 Bertha had a boy who was baptised Frederik Christian Valdemar Storm. Four years later Bertha had another boy, who was named Just Emilius Harald Storm. The family moved to Skindergade nbr 8 (ground floor) (matricle nbr 23) where Peder established his workshop next to the family's appartment (the building is protected as a class B building and was renovated in 1977). By 1 February 1840 the family had four members plus a maid Sophie Gephardt and the then 16 y.o. apprentice shoemaker Hans Christian Holm. The same year the family on 1 October Peder hired the 36 y.o shoemaker J.Strers. It is not known how long Strers worked for Peder. Five years later, on 1 Februray 1845, the family had no maid according to the census. Instead the family had two apprentices, 19 y.o. Lorentz Tønnesen and 18 y.o. Carl Johan Kroll. By 1850 Valdemar had become musician and Harald had started as apprentice chimney sweeper. Apart from this the family included 21 y.o. apprentice Anders Frederiksen from Sonnerup. According to records, Valdemar and Harald still lived with their parents on 1 February 1855 and Peder employed two apprentices, 17. y.o. Adolf Ludvig Hellested and 18 y.o. Ferdinand Jørgensen. By 1 February 1860 the children have all left home and there are no apprentices employed. This could be interpreted the way that Peder had an shoemaker employed in his workshop. The family still lived Skindergade no. 8 and here Peder died on 9 August On 12 August Copenhageners could read the following on page 2 in the Address Newspaper (a directory perhaps):

- 7 - Frederik Christian Valdemar Storm was born at Myntergade (Mynter Street) matricle no. 44 on 20 May 1829 and was baptised in Trinitatis Church on 12 July He had his confirmation in the same church in October The family moved from Myntergade to Skindergade no. 8 (matricle no. 23), where his father set up his shoemaker workshop next to the family's apartment. Valdemar had a very musical talent. Having finished school he decided to become a musician and as such he was recorded at the census of 1850 while he was still living with his parents. At the military conscription on 20 March 1849 he got session no. 288, however he was found tiny and weak and was sent home in order to gain weight. Valdemar turned up for another conscription in Again he was sent home with the notification: flat chested with no visible sign of any chest illness. His height measured centimeters (about 5 foot 6 inches). In 1853 he got no. 977 and was assigned for the military reserves, where he was to do service at the infantery in It seems however that he never did military duty. According to the census records of 1 February 1860 Valdemar didn't live at home any longer (with his parents). On 9 November 1865 Valdemar paid 4 Rbd (Rigsbanks Daler, probably similar to Dollars) to become registered in the Copulation Protocol (a register for weddings of some sort). The next day, on the 10 November 1865, Royal Orchestra Musician F.C.Valdemar Storm was married at Garnison Church (military church) to Ane Petrine Frederikke Hinnerup. She was born on 24 June 1834 as daughter of Royal Mint (Coin) Master and Assay Master Peter Reimer Hinnerup and wife Inger Helene Tømmerbye. Best man was P. Storm living at Skindergade no. 8 and P.R.Hinnerup living at Nyhavn no. 26. The couple settled down at Nyhavn no. 26, an apartment block owned by the Royal Coinage and located not far from the Royal Theatre where Valdemar was employed as a violinist. On 7 January 1867 Valdemar was handed over his father in law's apartment blok at Hummergade (Lobster Street) no. 4 and 6, however, Valdemar continued to live at Nyhavvn no. 26. His wife Frederikke had a son on 20 June 1867, however, she died 5 days later. Frederikke was buried at Assistents Church Cemetery on 29 June When Frederikke died, Valdemar hired the 28 y.o. Margrethe Nielsdotter as a nanny for the baby. Margrethe was born in Kopinge in Scania (southern Sweden) on 14 May 1839 and she emmigrated to Denmark 17 y.o. As a maid Valdemar employed 20 y.o. Lovise Christine Madsen born in Copenhagen on 9 January Photo showing the young Frederik Valdemar. Date unknown. The corners of the photo has been photshopped to make the corners complete.

Valdemar is listed in the KRAK's directory 1882 as a Royal Orchestra musician, however he is not listed as a music teacher of. On 16 September 1889 Valdemar died and the day after an announcement could be read in the newspaper Berlingske Tidende (Berling's Times):

Frederik Peter Evald Hinnerup Storm was born on 20 June 1867 at Nyhavn 26 (New Harbour no. 26). The mother died 5 days after having given birth, and the father employed a nanny Margrethe Nielsdatter to care for the little boy, who on 5 July 1867, one week after the funeral of the mother, was baptised in Christiansborg Slotskirke (the castle church next to the parliament building). Shortly after the family moved to Hummergade nr. 6 (Lobster Street no. 6) and here Frederik grew up. He had his confirmation in Christiansborg Slotskirke on 16 April Like his father, Frederik had a great musical talent and he had his debut as a musician at the Royal Chapel (the Royal Danish Orchestra) in Frederik was taught how to play the piano by Fr. Rung (Mrs Rung?) and flute by Royal musician Harald Jensen. Frederik played in Tivoli's Concert Hall and in the Music Association. He was Director of Music at the Province tournament of Frederik Christensen, the MIKADO, and became a Royal Orchestra musician (a distinguished position) by Late 1880s Frederik's father showed symptoms of illness and as an additional assistant in the house the family employed their previous maid Lovise Madsen. The father passed away peacefully on 16 September. As the only child Frederik inherited the properties in Hummergade 4 and 6. According to the census of 1 February 1890 Frederik still lived in his childhood home. Apart from the nanny Margrethe and the maid Lovise, Frederik had a tenant, 21 y.o. Frederik Hansen. Later that year, on 15 October, Frederik was married in Sct. Matthæus Kirke (St. Matthew's Church) to Vilhemine Johanne Lystrup.District Manager Harald Storm and fabric and linen retailer Sofus Lystrup were best men. The wedding dinner was enjoyed at H. Wittmack's establishment (rooms for hire) at Holmens Kanal 17 (The Navy Ship Yard Canal no. 17). Vilhemine was born 20 March She was the daughter of diseased barber Charles Vilhelm Lystrup and wife Julie Hermandine Birck. Vilhemine now joined the family in Hummergade and here on 14 August 1891 she gave birth to their first child, a girl who on 6 November was baptised in Christiansborg Castle Church. She was named Ella Julie Frederikke Storm. Vilhemine did not get on well with the nanny Margrethe, and she and Frederik moved to Vesterbrogade 98 A 1. Here, on 26 October 1892 Vilhemine had a girl, Inger Helene Vilhemine Storm. Inger was baptised in Christiansborg Castle Church on 30 March Young Frederik with his parents; Ane Petrine Frederikke left and Frederik Valdemar right

According to the census of 1 February 1895 the nanny Margrethe and the maid Lovise had taken over the apartment in Hummergade. In the census both women were registered as female tailors. Also, in the apartment the 37 y.o. Niels Christiansen had rented a room. He was employed as a waiter/service man down in the ground floor which was had been turned into a pub after a shoemaker had had his workshop here. The building in Pilestræde (Arrow Lane) was sold on 12 January By 1897 Frederik and Vilhemine lived Nørre Søgade (Northern Lake Street) no. 27 A3 (stair A, 3rd floor). Here, on 17 April 1897 Gerda was born and as with her sisters she was baptised in Christiansborg Castle Church. According to the KRAK's directory Frederik was God father. He taught how to play the flute and judging from the newspaper ad (see below) Frederik was also employed as a teacher at the Musik Konservatoriet (Music Academy). -> Royal Orchestra Musician Storm Royal Orchestra Musician Storm has taken over the position of Teacher of Flute at the Copenhagen Music Academy The buildings in Hummergade was sold on 22 June 1898 to wholesale agent Jens Sørensen at 60,000 Danish Kroner. Frederik composed a march melody which was named "Kavalleri - Revue Marsch". It was published by Wilhelm Hansen Music Publisher in the early years of the 1900s. In 1902 the family moved from no. 27 A3 to 27 B4. Six years later Frederik was awarded "The Kirstein Scholarship", and he and Vilhemine travelled to Paris for three weeks. Vilhemine's mother looked after the three girls while their parents were away. The children however were old enough to look after themselves, so the mother only needed to visit the apartment now and then to check that everything was fine. At the Royal Orchestra Frederik was promoted to solo flute player. On 26 October 1912 their daughter Inger, on her 20 years birthday, was wedded to officer at the Copenhagen Municipality Department Axel Christian Engsig-Karup and as the first of the three girls she left her family and home. A few years later the oldest daughter Ella travelled to USA where she on 31 August 1917 married Lars Peter Larsen. On 1 January 1921 Gerda married gardener Otto Mathias Kristensen and she left home as the last of the three girls. Frederik on this occation paid the following bill (see next page):

Around 1922 and 1923 Frederik and Vilhemine moved to Rhodosvej (Rhodos Road) no. 63 on Amager (the airport island). Frederik was awarded the Knights Cross of the Dannebrog Order (Dannebrog is the name of the Danish flag) on 13 October 1924 and the following announcement could be read in the newspaper: New Knight. Royal Orchestra Musician F. Storm, Rodosvej has been appointed Knight of Dannebrog. For 30 years the Distinguished Artist has been a member of the Royal Orchestra at which he is one of its finest Artists. His instrument is the Flute, and any person who has experienced "A Midsummer night's dream" will the Midsummer solo performed on flute is a splendid artistical performance. (some words seem to be missing) Frederik retired as a teacher at the Music Conservatory by He was now 60 y.o. Three years later, one day in the beginning of 1930, he was taken to Copenhagen Municipality Hospital because of a brain haemorrhage. This caused his death on 24 August. Royal Orchestra Musician Frederik Storm The diseased Solo Flute Player to be buried today Today, at Bispebjerg Krematorium the diseased Royal Orchestra Musician Frederik Storm is to be buried. Storm was a marvelous artist, an example to his fellow musicians. For many years he had a great influence playing at his important seat at operas as well as at the orchestra concerts, being brilliant technically and at his peak years about ten years ago before illness started to weaken him, his flute sound had a bright and lovely tune. Added to this, he was extremely distinguished in his way of playing music always disciplined in expression and always avoiding excessive emotions. And as genuine as he was as an artist, he was equally kind as a human, quiet in his attitude never interfering in daily strife or quarrel. But those who knew him, knew that this great and dignified man with his closed face which was like carved in wood, he kept a strong personality behind his disciplined mind, was an active and interested and skilled person with a great passion for his art. Frederik Storm was 63 years old. H.S. Funeral Retired Royal Orchestra Musician Frederik Storm. Yesterday, the retired Royal Orchestra Musician Frederik Storm was buried at the crematory at Bispebjerg. At the coffin, which was decorated with lovely flowers, the flower swept banners of the Orchestra Association waved and a great amount of beautiful wraiths along with signed decorations from the Director of the Double Stage Theatre and from the Royal Orchestra had been sent. Most of the gathered people were previous colleagues, for example primary orchestra conductor G. Høeberg, the royal orchestra musicians: Concert conductor J.C.F. Schjørring, V.M. Gandrup, Victor Hansen, H.C. Petersen, Knud Lassen, Lauritz Olsen, Emil Felumb and more, royal musician Finl Henriques, Jul. Borup and others. "I live and know..." was sung, and reverend P.L. Jensen, the Filips Church, spoke at the coffin, Royal Orchestra Musician Holger Gilbert Jespersen did a talk accompagnied by Händel's Adagio played on organ, and to the music of "The Great Master is Coming" the coffin was lowered into the grave. Vilhemine later moved to a nursing home at Amalie Road no 3 in Frederiksberg, where she died on 13 March Both Frederik and Vilhemine were cremated and their urns were put in the urn hall at Bispebjerg Cemetery, where they were kept until 31 December 1965.
Above: Inger Helene Hinnerup (Tømmerbye) and Peter Reimer Hinnerup. Date unknown, however, Inger Helene dies 1861 and Reimer Hinnerup dies Location of original images unknown. Below: Possibly Frederik Valdemar Storm left. Ane Petrine Frederikke Hinnerup right. Dates unknown. Location of original images: Poul Madsen (2017)
The handwriting on the back of the photo looks like Inger Storm's and it writes: "Grandmother Vilhemine Storm born Lystrup. Probably around her confirmation" That must mean between 1880 and Location of original image: Poul Madsen. Inger Storm probably gave the photo to her daughter Jeanne Madsen Image of Frederik and Vilhemine. Date: Around Location: Poul Madsen

This image, at an unknown location, could have be taken around 1896 as Gerda is missing. It looks however that Vilhemine (standing left) could be pregnant and Gerday was born April In front is Ella carrying a doll and Inger is sitting at the table. Frederik is standing furthest to the right. Notice the Royal Porcelain on table. Courtesy by Lise Larsen Pyles, scanned by Bill Pyles
Strandlinien in Dragør in Denmark. Vilhemine is feeding the geese with Ella on her left and Inger on her right (with the hat) and Gerda is reaching out. Image taken around The Storm family spent holidays in Dragør. Below: Perhaps Strandlinien no 39. Frederik is standing in the center. Furthest left might be a nanny. Courtesy by Lise Larsen Pyles, scanned by Bill Pyles
The location of the above and below images is unknown. Sources say that the Storm family spent time in Hornbæk on the north coast of Zealand. Photo taken around Sitting in the middle (to the right below) could be a friend or a neighbour or perhaps a nanny, however her dress does not look a nanny's. Courtesy by Lise Larsen Pyles
Image of Vilhemine with daughters Inger and Ella (right) washing up. Notice that Ella is holding a plate from the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain, same as on the photo of the family gathering in the dinning room (where Vilhemine is pregnant). The girls could be in their late teens, so perhaps the image was taken around 1910 Image of Vilhemine and Frederik with Ella (right) and Ella's sons Jay and Ewald. The image may have been taken late 1920s in connection with Ella visiting her parents in Copenhagen. Both images on this page courtesy by Lise Larsen Pyles.
Perhaps the last photo of Vilhemine and Frederik. Frederik looks like he has lost weight. He passed away It looks like the Circus Building in the background so maybe they are walking on Axeltorv (Axel Square) or Jernbanegade (Railway Street) in Copenhagen
Like his mother Ane Petrine Frederikke and grandfather Peter Reimer Hinnerup, Frederik had a talent for drawing. The images here are scans of a small note book he used for drafts. The image above is a self portrait dated 29 May On the scan below Jeanne Madsen (Frederik's grand daughter) writes: "Part of Dragør Harbour (Your great grand parents used to stay in Dragør during summer)". Location of book: Poul Madsen Portrait of Vilhemine possibly painted by Frederik - it is signed F.S There is supposed to exist a painting of Frederik as well, however, the location of this is unknown as of January 2017
