4 General Manager s Message Our board of directors held our annual board meeting on December 14th and I m happy to report that Ray Gildow is again serving as our board chair for Ray is a great leader and we are fortunate to have him leading our board. Every year at our annual board meeting in December we honor a very special volunteer with an award called the John Yourd Pillar Award. John Yourd was one of the founders of Lakeland PBS and worked tirelessly for over ten years to bring public television to Northern Minnesota throughout the 70s. His dream was realized when KAWE channel 9 went on the air in June of 1980 serving northern Minnesota. John was also instrumental in helping bring KAWB channel 22 to the Brainerd lakes area in John was not only generous with his time, but also with his treasure. John and his wife Dana donated their lake home to Lakeland PBS shortly before John passed away in John had terminal cancer at the time and John and Dana set up a charitable gift annuity so that Dana would be taken care of with a fixed quarterly payment for life from the proceeds of the funds they donated. John and Dana s past contribution to Lakeland PBS is still helping Lakeland PBS to this day through our endowment fund. If you re passionate about public television, you might want to consider investing in the future of Lakeland PBS with a gift in your estate plans as well. At our annual meeting, Kathy Moore was honored as our 2018 John Yourd Pillar Award recipient. Kathy has served on our board of directors since 2013 and has served in various committee and officer roles. Most recently Kathy has been serving as Chair of our Governance and Nominating Committee. Kathy has always been a strong advocate for our southern viewing area and has been a big help in the areas of marketing, advocacy and board governance. Kathy seems to have never-ending energy and gets heavily involved in any organization she works with. Because of board member term limits, Kathy is stepping down from her board role with us this month. She will be missed! If you know Kathy, please congratulate her on her service to Lakeland PBS. Join us for a prescreen of Victoria Season 3! Season 3 of this popular series will be full of twists and turns as Victoria and Albert and their growing family face the challenges of a changing nation. Jenna Coleman, the talented actress who plays Victoria stated, in season 3 we are coming to a place of instability with the monarchy, we take for granted that the monarchy was always secure, but it wasn t and Victoria will be at the center of it all! When: Friday, January 4, 2019, 1:30-3:00 pm Where: Lakeland PBS Building, 108 Grant Avenue NE, Bemidji (right next to the Sanford Events Center) Cost: None, the event is free! Light refreshments to be provided. RSVP: Seating is limited, so please RSVP by calling Kathleen at or kmckinstra@lptv.org Over this past year, I ve had quite a few people ask me about why they can t receive our live channel on their Roku, Apple TV, or on Passport or the PBS Video App. It s a complicated issue and part of the problem is program rights. Currently we don t have the rights to stream much of the programming we get from PBS and other program vendors. Fortunately, this is being addressed, but it will take some time to get this resolved. In addition, a few of the programs we now carry likely will not be available for streaming regardless due to complicated program rights issues. The other issues are getting carriage agreements in place with the various streaming providers and distribution of our local video stream to these providers. I m currently serving on a national working group with other PBS stations working with PBS on these issues. At this point, I can t tell you when you might see PBS and our local station on these new streaming services, but I can tell you that I m doing everything I can to help move this forward. If you re interested in seeing our station on any of these new streaming services I d really appreciate hearing from you to give me a sense of how big of an issue this really is for our viewers. You can always reach out to me at bsanford@lptv.org or you can call me at I d love to visit with you about this important issue and answer any questions you might have. Thank you. at the Capitol - New Season! Wednesdays at 10:30pm starting January 9 Broadcasting live during the legislative session as bills are passed and deals are made. All the most important lawmakers and decision makers from every corner of the state make regular appearances in live debates, committee highlights and floor action. at the Capitol is hosted by Mary Lahammer and David Gillette. In closing, I d like to thank everyone who supported our December pledge drive. Our drive was down a bit this year from last, but the good news is that we ve been growing our base of sustaining members and this stable base is likely reducing the number of folks who would typically renew during our pledge drives. As you re well aware from our on-air appeals, our pledge drives are extremely important because they help bring in the funds needed to continue to provide you with the programming you enjoy throughout the year. In addition, the local funds we raise during our pledge drives make our state and federal funding possible because much of our government funding requires local matching dollars. Because of this, your individual contributions go a lot farther than you might think. As always, thanks so much for your support! Bill Sanford - CEO Lakeland PBS 2 JANUARY/FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS Your Legislators - New Season! Thursdays at 8pm starting January 10 Now in its 39th season, Barry Anderson will again moderate this weekly program live from St. Paul. Each week, different legislators will answer your questions and address your concerns regarding the state of Minnesota. Viewers are encouraged to questions or comments to: yourlegislators@pioneer.org or call

Corey Campbell Thursday, January 31 at 7:30pm; Saturday, February 2 at 8:30pm Corey Campbell became interested in old time music about five years ago after watching and listening to a local old time session at a coffee shop, while in college. He went all in buying a banjo and immersing himself in the music and community, listening to and trying to learn everything he could about it. This level of obsession and dedication has led him to shape his own style writing instrumental banjo compositions, discovering seldom heard fiddle tunes, and performing for contra dances with his old time trio Sucker Run. Corey is able to tap into a style that predates bluegrass, drawing on influences from the roots, places, and people that may have formed this music. We don t know exactly how this music came to be but when we look around we can see how it continues on. 7 Who Says Birthdays Are Just For Kids? Good news for those who have celebrated their 70th birthday and beyond. After many years of uncertainty, in 2016 Congress finally made permanent a popular charitable giving tool called the IRA Charitable Rollover for individuals who are age 70 ½ and older. Individuals with an Individual Retirement Account, or IRA, and who are age 70 1/2 and older are required by law to take a distribution from their IRA s. The amount of their distribution is commonly referred to as their required minimum distribution or RMD. The charitable rollover law allows individuals to direct the amount they are required to withdraw and have this amount sent directly from their IRA to a IRS recognized nonprofit, such as Lakeland PBS. By doing this, the donor can reap big tax savings as the amount sent to the nonprofi does NOT have to be included in the donor s taxable income for the year of distribution. By reducing the amount of taxable income, the donor/taxpayer can often significantly reduce his/her tax liability. Here are the specifics: Individuals who use this strategy must be age 70 ½ or older; Only Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA s) are eligible not other retirement plans; Each individual may give up to $100,000 each year (if a couple both have IRA s, they could each make arrangements to gift up to $100,000 annually); Gifts cannot be made to a private foundation or a donor advised fund. An individual wishing to support Lakeland PBS can take advantage of this technique by contacting their IRA plan administrator and directing their RMD or a portion thereof to Lakeland Public Television. It is important to note that individuals must request a direct transfer of the funds from their plan administrator to Lakeland PBS. Some IRA plans require that the donor make the request in writing, while others allow for completion via a telephone call. It s best to contact your IRA plan and inquire about the specific protocol for making a Qualified Charitable Distribution using an IRA. To complete the charitable rollover, you will likely need a few pieces of information about Lakeland PBS including the following: Tax Identification Number for Lakeland Public Television: Mailing address for Lakeland Public Television: 108 Grant Avenue, Bemidji, MN Phone Number at Lakeland Public Television: If you would like to hear more about using a Qualified Charitable Rollover, or other strategies to make a tax savvy gift to Lakeland PBS, please contact Development Specialist Kathleen McKinstra. There is no cost or obligation and you might be surprised to find out about the variety of ways you can support Lakeland PBS. Remember... support what you value, support Lakeland PBS. Kathleen M. McKinstra, JD Development Specialist Telephone: Toll Free: ext. 118 kmckinstra@lptv.org Finding Your Roots: Season 5 Tuesdays, January 8-April 9 at 7pm This season features Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei; Emmy and Golden Globe Award winners Felicity Huffman, Laura Linney and S.
