Coordinators Comments On behalf of all the Canterbury Branch members I wish to welcome Peter Cornes, Matthew Kelly and Paul Robertson to the Ulysses Club. I hope you enjoy your time in the Club and remember to uphold the Club motto Grow Old Disgracefully. Time is running out to get your registrations in for the Goose Bay weekend over the period February Numbers for the catering on Saturday night are limited to a maximum of 50. This is a great weekend away and Pauline and Sky look after us all very well. Our Saturday BBQ s at Avon City Suzuki in aid of The Order of St John (ANZAC Day fundraiser) is raising approx $70 per BBQ ( hrs). The BBQ is also a great way for the Club to be seen by the public and other motorcycles and hopefully we will attract some new members to the Club. Planning is well underway for the Christmas function on the 21st December. Maureen and Dayle have made up Christmas hampers that will be raffled off on the night. We were very disappointed to note that someone gave three grocery items that were well outside their expiry dates. Nominations for the Branch committee close at 5:00pm on Tuesday the 10th January If you what to stand for a position on the committee, get your nomination in before the closing time. If you are not a financial member of the Club, you can not stand for a position on the committee or vote at the AGM. The Branch AGM is being held on Wednesday the 15th February 2012 at 8:15pm in the Cashmere Club. The rides committee have been very busy and have now put together a runs list until April There s something planned for just about every weekend over this period. This month s social evening will be held on Wednesday the 21st December and it's our Christmas function and there is also a Christmas theme (dress up). There will be a prize for the best dressed male and female. Please note that dinner for those that have prepaid will be served from approx 6:30pm. No prepaid ticket, no meal. There will be a social evening on the 18th January 2012 at the Cashmere Club. 5 Knitting Club News November 2011 Wednesday 2 nd. Well November started the same way as October left off, it was bloody raining, however the event has been beautifully summed up by Graeme, who was as disappointed as the rest of us. Ode to the Rain The rain on the Plain gave Bob & Terry some pain as they couldn't ride their Harley or Honda (Tiger)so planned to drink tea & coffee down under. They wanted to yarn with the Knitting Group lads and plan rides and golf and other such fads. The message went out and comrades responded as no riding on a Wednesday made them despondent. BB's Cafe they did meet - to share and to greet and to rest their Ulyssian bikers feet - to jibe; to remember; to smile to greet and to laugh to talk about motor bikes, other Members and their feats - so, keep working all you younger Ulyssians we need your support cos your tax pay's for our leisure our knitting and our golfing sport. All to soon you'll join us and will think the same as us, that if this is being disgraceful then it really is a must. So next week will come around soon enough, the sun will again be shining, and riding our steeds will again be a must as will the drink of tea and coffee Say no more! Wednesday 9 th. It was golf day and it wasn t raining, great! But it was also the start day for the Christchurch Show and all roads to Shell Curletts were chocker. Thought for a while I d be on my own and then in they trickled. Dave, John, Terry and last, but by no means least, Herman with Chaz in the pilots seat. Well after 9.00 am by now, and I was concerned as I knew some would be waiting down at BP Rolleston and be quietly wondering where the hell we were, so we took off with a hiss and a roar. Well I did anyway, made 2 or 3 hundred meters then noticed there was no one behind me, bugger! Nothing to do but stop and wait and then along came Terry. Sorry mate he says, I just got going and then I fell off, didn t even get out of the service station. Bloody hell I thought, I wonder if he ll make it all the way to Rakaia? Well he did and as my luck would have it, I drew him as a partner, along with John Hadfield. Turns out he s better at golf than riding his bike and between him, John and myself we turned in a respectable score, which will forever remain a secret. However, back to the ride down there! We eventually turned up a BP Rolleston and found Mark, Allan, Ian & Bill waiting for us and looking for someone to blame for the late arrival, hard to imagine Terry looking sheepish, but he did. Brilliant 9 hole course at Rakaia spoiled only by the ineptitude of at least 6 of the 9 players although none of that group had fallen off their bikes, not that day anyway. Being staunch members of the knitting Group, the devoted ones showed off their needle skills during the lunch break, especially Allan who impressed with his variety of under garments destined for our troops in Afghanistan, we just have to hope that one size fits all! Despite the obvious setbacks at the start the day turned out to be pretty damn good and was topped off by a coffee at Hillyers, Leeston, on the way home, bugger forgot to tell Terry it was his shout. Wednesday 16 th. This was one of those pre arranged impromptu rides brought on by a suggestion from John H that we should go up to Cave Stream for lunch, and everyone agreed it was a good idea. Mark was pleased he could get another half hour in bed that morning and arranged to meet us at Springfield, which he did along with Robin who was coming from Rangiora. 5

The weather was good and Terry was on his new acquisition the Triumph Tiger, which he was very eager to try out and even more eager to stay on, at least until he got out of Shell Curletts, so we let him lead the way. Easy ride up to Springfield, pick up Mark, Debbie & Robin and then on towards Porters, but where the hell was Terry? Seems he was giving the Tiger a wee try out along with Chaz & Robin all of whom quietly disappeared over the horizon. Of course it wasn t that they were going fast it was just us taking our time Yeah Right. We caught up with them eventually when all the back markers started turning off at Cave Stream only to create mayhem at the car park entrance and then being told it wasn t Cave Stream we were going to it was the DOC camp about 1k down the road. It s a wonder some of these old people can find their way out of bed some mornings, but I guess we were close enough to Cave Stream, in John s opinion, and at least he came up with the idea. For all that the final location was a brilliant lunch stop and we were entertained by bus loads of girls arriving and heading down to the river with canoes, but no one had a heart attack which was surprising. The ride back was a good as the ride there and even Terry was showing restraint as we headed back to Springfield for a well earned, but apprehensive, cup of coffee at the café where I d succumbed to food poisoning about a year before. All good this time though and got home in good shape after a thoroughly enjoyable day on the bike, well done John, great idea. Wednesday 23 rd. Didn t happen today, most of us were away at the Burt Munro savouring the howling wind and rain, to say nothing of the odd whiskey, but that s another story. Wednesday 30 th. While we were away at The Burt Munro we met up with an Aussie guy who called himself Bung. Thought at first he was a skite but it turns out he was always at the open end of a bottle and Cork or Screw Cap didn t really cut the mustard. Anyway he came from Cairns and he was a good bloke, contradiction in terms maybe but true. So to cut a long boring story short he had a few days left in NZ on his rented Triumph and he hadn t been to Akaroa so the days destination seemed obvious. John Gallagher also turned up in the MG with bro in law Chris and as ever the ride over the hill was brilliant. Sadly that was also the day of the funeral for Joseph O Carroll from Street & Sport and a few of us felt the need to get back early and attend his farewell, which turned out to be a fairly big event with something over 200 bike there. Consequently we took our leave of Bung in Akaroa and I ve since heard that he s now back in Cairns pining for the wind and rain that hit us all in Invercargill. There s no accounting for those Aussies!!!!! Bob Tanner 2877 KIC. 6

The Gymkhana of Death Gymkhana (Hindi: जमख़ न, Bengali:, Urdu: (ج مخانہ is a typical Anglo-Indian expression, which is derived from the Hindi-Urdu word for racket court. See, you didn t know you didn t know that did you. I ve been to a number of Gymkhana s with thems wot dribble, are often cantankerous, sometimes ornery, prone to biting, that stand on your feet and smell bad; especially on a hot day. No, I m not referring to the weekly dance class at Sunnyside Home for the bewildered. I m talking horses. So when the term Gymkhana was used in relation to our beloved Ulysses branch I thought this could be interesting; motorcyclists on horses? By the way, wanna see some driving? Google Ken Block Gymkhana. Now that man can drive! But I digress. Anyway back to the Gymkhana. We followed MnM Dew on the Big Blue to the venue at Mark & Debbie's place in Darfield, a rather pleasant site in the country where my senses were immediately assaulted with the joys of spring and my eyes began watering and nose started running like a tap. Mark a fellow seafarer on seeing my plight, produced a Zirtec and a glass of water. It happens to me too Chris. You come home from sea...especially this time of the year, and walk straight into hay fever. There are no flowers, cats, trees or pollen at sea and funnily enough the Aussis on the boat don t make my eyes water either. Thanks Mate, it did the trick. The MC for the Day was Martin Boyle. How long have you had those legs I asked, looking at what appeared like knotted pieces of white string dangling from his shorts. I ve had this set for a while now. I m quite pleased with them as far as legs go he replied. They ve kept me bum off the ground. That s always a plus, with legs, that they go up high enough. Yes he smiled. And I m teaching them to dance too. With the entrants seated on hay bales and folding chairs, thermos s opened and sandwiches being munched. Martin outlined the course, the obstacles; those challenges facing the brave yet somewhat nervous riders; which was to be expected. Though some while not competing, had I suspect, come to the tournament to witness the humiliation, nay carnage, of those succumbing to defeat. This is the start, Chocolate Fish Fishing he explained, indicating a number of the hapless creatures hanging from strings in a curtain of deadly, multicoloured foam tubes called the Dangling Distracters of Death swinging wildly in the breeze threatening to knock the unwary from their mounts. Without hands, you have to bite off a fish keeping your feet off the ground at all times. Be wary of the Death Plunge(r). Grabbing a chocolate fish with your mouth? No problems...if you had a pillion with the oral dexterity of Pamela Anderson and a pilot who could ride slowly. That is the Ramp of Death, or the Ramp of Rigour...mortice he said indicating a raised platform, the aim being to ride up a plank where negotiating its dizzying heights, you rode down another teetering ramp on t other side. 9

Through the gate you will find the Death Spiral. Follow the fence...it s pretty straight forward. Martin pointed. I d encourage competitors to walk the course to familiarise themselves with the lie of the land. The Death Spiral consisted of a meandering path cut by a ride-on mower through knee high paddock grass (which is subjective because it depended on how tall you were) which eventually lead in ever decreasing circles to its hub. If you had survived this Path to Purgatory thus far the rider had to complete a 360 without putting ones feet down. Having completed the complete 360 completely they exited via the Exit of Extinction. It s been done said Mark. I did it on a Fat Boy so anyone can do it. Yes, Mark but did you do it on a bike? Next to face the riders was the Deadly Seesaw of Death. The rider must keep focused when negotiating its slippery slopes least they slide to their...death. Having successfully faced down that fearful fulcrum, riders had to ride over two steps of differing heights called the Variable Heights Ramps of Death...but not at the same time...from which they had to complete another complete 360 completely around the Witches Coven, a pyramid of branches, wood and the remains of dead motorcyclists later to bet set alight around which, upon the coming of darkness and under a full moon, punters were encouraged to dance naked chanting You meet the nicest people on a Honda whilst sacrificing goats. Nah, I m kidding about the goats...i m not sure about the rest; I d left long before sunset. Should you survive thus far, the last obstacle was perhaps the most daunting, the most hazardous, the most testing of a riders skill, the one most likely to result in one s demise and humiliation. It was the Valley of the Shadow of...you guessed it, Death. Riders chose to veer left or ride around a large, looming, threatening cardboard box whilst avoiding a barrier of water filled milk plastic milk bottles filled with water. The Jousting proved a hit, easier if you had a pillion, awkward otherwise trying to balance speed with one hand holding the joust and the other the clutch or throttle...and that s why we were born with mouths...too hold stuff in. What do you want Jousting sticks for Darl? Well they ve gotta be a bargain at that price. Tell im he s dreamin Jousting, sticks. If you ve never seen the movie The Castle then you won t know what I m talking about, and you ve missed seeing a very funny movie. Rolling a barrel in a straight line using your front wheel looked a damn sight easier that it was. The final task was a game of 10-pin bowling using two litre milk bottles and old motorcycle helmets. The HJC I was wearing when I had the close encounter of the Canine Kind a couple of years back soon looked very 2 nd hand as the lining, the inner shell started to fly apart which just goes to show you why you should replace your helmet if it s had any sort of impact. Finally, sunburnt and thirsty, the BBQ was fired up and a damn fine feed to finish off what was a great day. 10

It was a great day, every rider I m sure having a blast. As Mark said if you could do it on a Fat Boy, you could do it on anything; and we did. Scooters, cruisers, sports and adventure bikes; we all did it and had a blast. And as the day progressed I think we all got better at it. For those of you who haven t been to Steve Orpwood s Slow Rider Saturdays, the skills picked up from those mornings certainly helped. It was the first gymkhana I ve been to; of the two wheeled kind and it reckon should become part of our annual calendar of events. A very big thank you to Mark, Debbie and Martin, for putting on a really great day. Captain Carefree #

Resume: Mike Dew # 2415 Position: Ulysses Club President I have been a member of the Ulysses Club for the past 18 years, having joined at the age of 40. In I was one of three very keen Canterbury Branch members who formed the organising committee for the successful 2000 National AGM in Christchurch. In 2005 I was elected to the Branch Committee, as a committee member. The following year, I was elected Canterbury Branch Coordinator a position I will hold until February The last six years, as Canterbury Branch Coordinator, have given me a good insight into how our Club works and I've also attended all the coordinators meetings and workshops. I have been, and still am a very active and hard-working Branch Coordinator. I am certainly not shy in coming forward and saying what I think, or volunteering to help out. At times this may upset some people, but I call a spade a spade, and while always keen to listen to what another member has to say I have not and will not be a puppet. I fully understand and can work with the Politics of an organisation to maintain the balances and deliver the mandated outcomes. I also try to respond to correspondence in a timely manner (this is usually within 48 hours). In 2009 I was asked by Natcom to be part of the team led by David Coy that was tasked with rewriting the Club Rule book. This was worked on over a six month period and was passed at the 2010 National AGM in Christchurch and so I am therefore conversant with the rules and constitution of the Club. At the National AGM in 2010, I was elected on to Natcom as a committee member. At our first committee meeting in June, I volunteered to take on the roll as the Club Quartermaster a position I still hold. Over the last two years, I've been a very active member of Natcom and have also been part of a very successful team. It is my opinion our Club is in a strong position to meet the future, but the National Committee, Branch Coordinators and the members do have a number of challenges ahead, particularly as a younger generation is coming through and they will bring new expectations and the key is to balance tradition with modernisation. I also think we need to review the costs of attending National AGM's and at ways to reduce these costs to a more affordable level. I m a born and bred Mainlander (from Blenheim), occasionally a bit one eyed, with a very strong commitment to The Ulysses Club. I truly believe that I have the skills, the experience, the time and the energy to be your President and to be part of the team that will see our Club over coming any challenges that lay ahead. I also have Maureen's (my wife and a Club member #4747) support in standing for the President's position. To this end I request your support (Vote) for my election as your Club President. If you are not attending the AGM in Nelson, please make the effort to cast a postal vote in support of me. Thank you. Mike Dew # 2415 Ulysses Club - Canterbury Branch Coordinator 12

On the 8 th of September 2011, we (Ulysses members Grant, Niki, Steve, Pete, Marilyn, Janet, and some friends) embarked on a fully guided motor cycle tour in America with a company called Eagleriders - a fantastic ride lasting 14 days and 15 nights. The tour followed the original Route 66 or Main Street of America ; a strip of road stretching 4394km from Chicago to Los Angeles, crossing three time zones and 8 States: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Route 66 was the route of migrants and desperadoes discovering the way west to California, and in the 1950s thousands of cars rode bumper to bumper behind each other to experience the Western frontier. Hotels, motels, gas stations, classic restaurants and the rest of the "New" America sprang up everywhere along the road, and many of these nostalgic landmarks are today preserved just as they were in the 1950s. Many more are left standing, empty shells, but reminders of what once was. We started the tour at the Holiday Inn, Chicago, where we registered and also picked up our motorcycle tour jackets which were included in the tour package. Then it was off to dinner and a get-together at the Hard Rock Cafe. All up, there were 30 riders and 15 pillion passengers consisting mainly of Kiwis, Aussies, POMs and a couple of Irish blokes. We were split into 2 groups of 15 riders just to make things a little more manageable. Each day one group left about 30 minutes before the other group then we would all meet up at the end of the day. The following day we were transported by bus to the Eagleriders office to get our motorbikes. There was a bit of waiting around while we filled in forms and got the low-down on our bikes. A couple of hours later we were soon on route to Springfield, Illinois - our first overnight stop. You can choose from a variety of motorbike makes for the trip, in our group we all chose to ride a Harley. Some of us, who had not ridden a Harley before, became quite fond of their bike; some of us were less impressed. After the first day out it was clear the riding was going to be quite challenging at times and certainly not a laid back holiday more like an adventure! We were on the interstate, it was pouring down, and we were doing 130km an hour on the freeway and the trucks were still passing us! 14

Over the next few days, we travelled along the old Route 66, and sometimes on the Interstate (new route), stopping along the way to meet various colourful characters and to see places that have formed part of American folk law, for example, visiting the home of the corn dog and crossing over the mighty Mississippi River into St Louis, Missouri. Route 66 is a country road and pretty rough in places so some days the riding was not easy (especially on a sportster). Most days we left the hotel by 8.30am and got to our hotel for the night about 6pm. We did stop quite a few times but never for long so a lot of time was spent riding which I loved. Riding the Mother road across the wide-open state of Oklahoma and straight through Tornado Alley was fantastic. We were going to stop in a town called Joplin, but our hotel had been destroyed by a tornado that had hit about a month before (thankfully none were around when we went through). After saying goodbye to Oklahoma we eased our way across the northern stretch of America s largest state, Texas. Rolling green fields and cattle ranches faded desert country and that traditional barren landscape that symbolises Texas. If an Indian with a bow and arrow had popped up in the rocks somewhere I wouldn t have been at all surprised. It was fantastic motor biking country. When we arrived in Amarillo, we parked the bikes and hopped into stretch limousines to visit The Big Texan Steakhouse, a place where you can sit at the big table and try your hand at finishing their world famous 72 ounce Rib Eye (2kg+) and all the trimmings- in under an hour!! No one succeeding in doing this while we were there. After Texas we rode into New Mexico, we stayed in Santa Fe for two nights. Santa Fe, with all its Spanish/Mexican architecture, was amazing. The town plaza (centre) was bustling with Navajo and Apache Indians selling handmade jewellery and crafts to the tourists. It was the perfect place to rest up for a bit and get some washing done! After Santa Fe, we headed to Gallup, still in New Mexico; we stopped when we got to Madrid. It s the small town where they did a lot of the filming for the Wild Hogs movie. After Gallup we headed on into the Arizona desert to the mighty Grand Canyon. If you have not been to the Grand Canyon before, it is one of those OMG moments when you first see it. It is truly incredible and pictures do not do it justice. We stopped overnight and some of us took a half hour helicopter ride in and around the Canyon - organised by Eagleriders at an extra cost, but well worth it. 15

The next day we carried on across the desert into Nevada heading to Laughlin for the night. We stopped off on the way to stand on the corner in Winslow Arizona you may remember the famous Eagles song Take it Easy. The next day we set of to Las Vegas with a detour to ride over the Hoover Dam. We arrived into Las Vegas in the early afternoon. My brother Ian and I took time to ride down the famous Las Vegas Strip, we spent the rest of the day and evening looking around. What an incredible place. The next day we packed up and headed back out into the Mojave Desert - destination Victorville, California. That was a long hot day, with temperatures getting up to 45 degrees centigrade. The next day we rode into LA had a quick tour of Hollywood and Beverley Hills and then we rode on to the Santa Monica Pier - the end of Route 66. We averaged about 90km per hour on the route 66 roads but on the freeways we were doing km per hour. Even at that speed trucks were still passing us! The shortest day we had we covered 188km and the longest was about 526km. The tour guides were fun, knowledgeable and professional. The Route 66 trip was all inclusive of the tour leaders, our bikes, a support vehicle, which carried our luggage and was equipped with spare bikes and drinking water. Also included was the accommodation, fuel and oil, unlimited mileage, a riding jacket, pre and post tour dinner, daily breakfast etc. Not that you were indoors for long, but the accommodation was excellent. Probably easier to mention what was not included; lunch, snacks, dinner and beverages, gratuities and return Airfares. All in all it was a fantastic trip and to be recommended. If you can make it happen then go for it! Janet Carter #
