6 Trace the flow of life along one of the world s most sacred rivers. The Ganges River stretches 1,560 miles across India, starting in the southern Himalayan mountains and ending in the Bay of Bengal. It is considered the holy river of Hinduism and plays an important role in many religious ceremonies and rituals. People, as well as wild animals, have been dependent on this river for millennia. Ganges, a three-part documentary created by the BBC, follows the majestic river through both time and place. From the serenity of the Valley of Flowers to the hustle and bustle of Calcutta, the river s story flows as naturally as its water. DAUGHTER OF THE MOUNTAINS Sunday, April 12 at 8 p.m. Monday, April 13 at 9 p.m. The first part of the journey begins in the Himalayas, the source of the Ganges. The four Hindu temples marking the source are the destination for thousands of religious pilgrims every year. The high peaks of this mountain range are home to snow leopards, Asiatic brown bears, and bearded vultures known as lammergeiers. Closer to the base are tigers, otters, peacocks, and the last herd of wild elephants that live on the banks of the Ganges. Mahseers, the largest species of carp in the world, can also be found in this section of the river. RIVER OF LIFE Sunday, April 19 at 8 p.m. Monday, April 20 at 9 p.m. The Ganges continues to weave its way through the vast plains of India. As we pass some of the greatest and most ancient cities of this country, it becomes clear how thoroughly the river has influenced the development of Indian civilization over the last 5,000 years. The Mughals built palaces on its shores and used the water for elaborate irrigation systems, while European invaders introduced ships, factories, and warehouses to the area. Although one-tenth of the entire world population lives within the Ganges basin, there is still plenty of wildlife that thrives here as well. WATERLAND Sunday, April 26 at 8 p.m. Monday, April 27 at 9 p.m. Before the Ganges reaches the sea, it joins with the Brahmaputra tributary to create hundreds of rivulets and the largest delta in the world. Discover how people and wildlife coexist in this habitat, wreaked by hurricanes and monsoons every year. The largest mangrove swamps on earth can be found here, as well as a diverse array of animals. Giant lizards, snakes, and crocodiles; herds of chital deer; and groups of monkeys can all be found, if you know where to look. The rare but mighty Bengal tigers continue to rule this part of India. Join WYCC PBS Chicago for this remarkable journey, Sundays, April 12, 19, and 26 at 8 p.m. Encore presentations Mondays at 9 p.m. 6

21 ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with Jane Seymour Jane Seymour was born in Hillingdon, England, and was drawn to the performing arts at an early age. When she was 13 years old, she made her professional dancing debut with the London Festival Ballet. Just a few years later, however, she injured her knee and had to leave dancing behind. Her breakout role in film was as Solitaire in the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die. After that, she appeared on countless television shows and miniseries. She has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, including for her role as the titular Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special for Onassis: The Richest Man in the World. Seymour s love of art extends to her work as a writer, painter, sculptor, and designer. She created the Open Hearts jewelry line for Kay Jewelers and has designed furniture and other home accessories. Seymour is also known as a passionate health advocate, which inspired her to host Feel Grand with Jane Seymour (airing Sundays at 3 p.m.). Seymour, who is now in her mid-60s, invites expert guests and doctors to discuss how people 55+ can lead healthy lifestyles that will help them enjoy their golden years.
