16 WayWood Wines Cellar Door, Blewitt Springs Wine & BEER The Fleurieu Peninsula is home to several distinct wine regions, including the world-famous McLaren Vale. Grapes have been grown on the Fleurieu Peninsula since the 19th century when John Reynell planted his first vines at McLaren Vale. Despite this proud ancestry, the region is today known for its young, innovative winemakers and its distinctive maritimeinfluenced reds, especially Shiraz. The McLaren Vale wine region can also boast home to Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser from Yangarra Estate Vineyard. Visitors can choose from around 70 cellar doors spread across the Vale they range from small, family wineries to large international brands. Several wineries, including d Arenberg, Penny s Hill and Ekhidna operate world-class restaurants. Others serve regional platters, wood-fired pizzas or light refreshments; a number also offer in-house galleries displaying the work of local painters, sculptors and other creative artists. The Fleurieu Peninsula is also home to several other wine regions, including Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek and Southern Fleurieu. Langhorne Creek, on the eastern edge of the peninsula, is one of the largest grape producing areas in South Australia, but also supports a number of boutique producers. Its compact size makes it an ideal place for touring several of the wineries have cellar doors while The Winehouse showcases five of the smaller local wine labels. Both Currency Creek and Southern Fleurieu are emerging wine regions with exciting products. For a handy overview, follow the self-drive Nature, Sea and Vines Trail which includes some of the peninsula s finest regional produce, coastal scenery and wine experiences. The Fleurieu Peninsula is also featured in the four-day Epicurean Way touring route, which also includes the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. Beer, cider and gin Craft beer is now a major drawcard on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Established players include Swell Brewing, Goodieson, Vale Brewing, Steam Exchange, Ekhidna and Smiling Samoyed, but new brewers are also making waves. One new arrival is Meechi, the first craft brewer to base itself in Langhorne Creek. Most of these micro breweries offer tasting rooms, light meals and guided tours. While established beer styles like pale ale, IPA, stout, pilsner and wheat beer are all popular, it s also worth looking out for big flavoured seasonal brews and one-off creations only available at the brewery. The peninsula is also home to several very successful cider makers, such as Oxenberry Grapple Cider, McLaren Vale Orchards and Three Oaks Cider, which are widely available in the region. A small-batch gin, Settlers Artisan Rare Dry Gin, is being made in McLaren Vale using grape spirit as its base and Australian botanicals such as saltbush and cranberry. The distiller also produces triple-distilled oak aged gin. Both gins can be sampled at The Salopian Inn in McLaren Vale. European history In 1802, English explorer Matthew Flinders met French explorer Nicolas Baudin both exploring Australia near the mouth of the Murray River. Baudin named this region after his patron, the French Navy Minister Charles Pierre Claret, Comte de Fleurieu, while the bay itself was named after the historic meeting, becoming Encounter Bay. In the 1790s, American whalers were based at Victor Harbor chasing the Southern Right whales that are now a winter tourist attraction. During 1836, Colonel William Light made his first landing in South Australia at a sheltered port he named Rapid Bay in honour of the ship in which he was sailing. Light had been sent to search for a harbour and find a site for the capital of the colony. Indigenous history The history of the Fleurieu Peninsula dates back many thousands of years before European arrival and is documented by the Kaurna, Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri people. These people, who are linked by sites that tell stories about the creation of their lands and document their knowledge about plants, animals, seasons, climate and their relationship to country in being the traditional custodians, continue to take responsibility for its wellbeing. 27 Port Noarlunga RECOMMENDED DIVE AND SNORKELLING SITES Diving & SNORKELLING Uncrowded, pristine waters and a unique marine environment protected by Encounter Marine Park make the Fleurieu Peninsula a unique diver s paradise. South Australia is home to some of the most biologically diverse waters in the world, with around 80 per cent of the local species found nowhere else. By comparison, South Australia s waters are more diverse than the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. What s out there? The coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula adjoins Encounter Marine Park and has a large array of marine life. Explore carefully and you ll glimpse South Australia s famous Leafy Sea Dragon, unique to the waters of southern Australia and South Australia s marine emblem. The Leafy Sea Dragon is recognised by the leafy appendages on its body. It has a long tubular snout, a pectoral fin on its neck and a dorsal fin on its back, and is commonly found on kelp-covered reefs in depths of three to 50 metres. There are also the Weedy Sea Dragon, Giant Australian cuttlefish, Blue Devil fish, Old Wife fish, Zebrafish and majestic rays. Sea grass communities give shelter to sponges, erect bryozoans, Tube worms, razor shells, sea stars and Sand crabs. Bottlenose dolphins and Common dolphins are frequently sighted, as are Australian sea lions and Long-nosed fur seals. Over 25 species of whales are seen in South Australian waters with Southern Right, Humpback and Fin whales the most frequently reported. Whale encounters are exhilarating; however, for the safety of the swimmer and the whales, an exclusion zone of 100 metres from adult whales and 300 metres from calves applies. Where to go? The most famous in the region and now a premier ecotourism dive site is the Fleurieu Reef, created in 2002 with the scuttling of the ex-hmas Hobart in Yankalilla Bay. Unlike other scuttled ships around Australia, most of the ship is accessible to divers, including the engine room and gun turrets. This site is outside of navigational and commercial fishing areas and is a marine park sanctuary zone, so all divers must obtain a dive permit before entering the protected area. Permits are available at There are several accredited operators that conduct dive tours to the ex-hmas Hobart, which includes arranging permits. For further information, call the Yankalilla Bay Visitor Information Centre on Guided SNUBA tours are also available in Port Noarlunga. 28 Whales & WILDLIFE The Big Duck Boat Tours, Victor Harbor From migrating whales to kangaroos, dolphins and over 250 bird species, the Fleurieu Peninsula offers plenty of opportunity to interact with wildlife. Whale watching The Fleurieu Peninsula is one of the state s most popular and accessible whale watching regions. With its picturesque coastline and Encounter Marine Park, it s the perfect place to view one of the world s most majestic mammals - Southern Right and Humpback whales commonly seen around the Fleurieu Peninsula. These gentle giants generally appear along the coastline between May and October. Some of the best vantage points are between Goolwa and Victor Harbor where they migrate to mate and calve in the warmer waters of the Fleurieu Peninsula. See newborn calves grow and develop, becoming more active and adventurous each day until they are finally strong enough to return to sub-antarctic waters with their mothers around October. To view whales from the water, book a trip with Big Duck Boat Tours, or visit the South Australian Whale Centre to learn more. Located in Victor Harbor, the facility hosts an interpretive centre, and provides maps and sighting information to visitors. For further information, visit or call the SA Whale Information Hotline on 1900 WHALES ( ). Dolphins and seals When looking out for whales, keep an eye out for playful dolphins and sea lions. Both the Common dolphin and the Bottlenose dolphin can often be seen cruising in a peaceful bay, riding the bow wave of a boat or even dropping in on surfers riding the waves. Australian sea lions can sometimes be spotted by boat off the small islands around the coast and Long-nosed fur seals are quite a common sight along the coast and particularly around the barrage in Goolwa. At certain times of the day you may see Western Grey kangaroos. A delightful place where they can be reliably seen is around Tent Hill in Deep Creek Conservation Park, one of the best places on the Fleurieu Peninsula for wildlife. You may even spot the Short-beaked echidna, Ringtailed possum and Yellow-footed antechinus. Urimbirra Wildlife Park, near Victor Harbor, is another great place to experience local wildlife. 29 Murray River, the Coorong & WATERWAYS Canoe the Coorong, Coorong National Park Canoeing, fishing, hiking, boating, swimming and birdwatching are just some of the many activities on offer when you visit the Murray, the Lakes and Coorong National Park. The mighty Murray Snaking its way 2530 kilometres from the Snowy Mountains, the Murray River enters the Southern Ocean, via Lake Alexandrina, just outside Goolwa. Experience the Murray Mouth on a cruise from Goolwa or drive along sealed roads to a viewing area at Sugars Beach on Hindmarsh Island. For the more adventurous, you can 4WD along Goolwa Beach, but how close you get to the mouth will depend on the tide and river flows. The Lakes and Coorong The shallow waters of Lake Alexandrina make up the largest freshwater reservoir of water in South Australia flowing into the Coorong, a protected coastal reserve. The Murray, Angas, Bremer and Finniss rivers all flow into Lake Alexandrina. This area is a true naturalist s haven, with the Lower Lakes, Murray Mouth and Coorong National Park listed as a Wetland of International Importance for Waterbirds. The best time to visit is in the spring or early summer, after the rains and the arrival of many hundreds of thousands of migratory Northern Hemisphere wader birds. You can swim, fish, cruise, ski or explore the Lakes and Coorong. Alternatively, follow one of the three canoe trails which stretch more than 80 kilometres across the Coorong National Park. For more information, visit Waterfalls, dams and glacier remains The region offers a number of spectacular waterfalls including Ingalalla Falls, Deep Creek Waterfall and picturesque Hindmarsh Falls, 18 kilometres from Victor Harbor. For a spectacular view of the Myponga Reservoir, drive over the dam wall on Myponga Reservoir Road at Sellicks Hill. There s an excellent lookout and picnic area. About 250 million years ago, the Fleurieu Peninsula was covered in glaciers, with ice and glacier reaching from Victor Harbor to the Yankalilla region. Visitors can see evidence of this at Inman Valley s Glacier Rock (or Selwyn s Rock), a smooth rock pavement exposed in the riverbed. Experience Onkaparinga Gorge, with its steep gorges set among tranquil waterholes and river red gums. Enjoy one of the many walking tracks or enjoy the gorge from a different angle on some of the state s best rock climbing cliff faces. Birdwatching The Fleurieu Peninsula, with its diverse habitat of forests and scrub, open paddocks, wetlands, rivers, estuaries and ocean, is home to over 250 bird species. Whether you want to jump on your bike or pull on a pair of hiking boots, the Fleurieu has something special for you to enjoy. The region is home to several famous walking trails and a network of dedicated cycling paths. Keen hikers will want to tackle the Fleurieu Peninsula section of the famous Heysen Trail which runs for 1200 kilometres from Cape Jervis to the Flinders Ranges. The Fleurieu section introduces you to dramatic coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, lush dairy country, native forests and pine plantations. If you only have a few hours to spare, head for Deep Creek Conservation Park which offers short walks from Tapanappa Campground to Boat Harbour Beach and from the Tapanappa Lookout to Deep Creek Waterfall pass. The Fleurieu Peninsula is also host to The Kidman Trail, a 225 kilometre route which stretches from the coast inland to the Clare Valley. This trail is open to horse riders, cyclists and walkers and provides a sustainable, safe and scenic trail that highlights the natural beauty, cultural history and major points of interest along the Mount Lofty Ranges. Those who prefer to travel on two wheels will find a wide range of dedicated cycle paths on the Fleurieu Peninsula from threehour rambles to multi-day rides. Bike hire is available at Victor Harbor, McLaren Vale, Middleton, Port Elliot and Strathalbyn, while bike trail maps can be picked up at the nearest Visitor Information Centre. One of the most popular trails is the 30 kilometre Encounter Bikeway which links Victor Harbor and Goolwa, via Port Elliot and Middleton. It can be used by cyclists, walkers, skaters or rollerbladers, and is wheelchair accessible. For something a little more challenging, consider tacking the four-hour ride from Strathalbyn into the hills. This circular trail takes the rider to Gemmell Hill, Ashbourne, Meadows, Bull Creek and Paris Creek before returning to the town of Strathalbyn. Want to see wineries and beaches? Then follow the 52 kilometre ride from Noarlunga Centre to Maslin Beach and McLaren Vale. The route includes Moana, Port Willunga and Silver Sands. Along the way you ll see vineyards, almond orchards, historic settlements and wonderful coastal scenery. Those who want to combine gentle exercise with a spot of wine tasting should consider the well-maintained Coast to Vines Rail Trail which follows a disused train line from the coastal cliffs of Marino Rocks to the rural town of Willunga in the heart of McLaren Vale. The 38 kilometre shared-use trail offers many attractions, including Onkaparinga River Recreation Park and the historic townships of Old Reynella and Old Noarlunga.
