Executive Summary This report covers MEPA's weed clearance and bush regeneration activities over the past 12 months. It includes work in road reserves, Powerlink easements and other public land within the Brisbane Forest Park and D'Aguilar Range area. Both funded and volunteer weed clearance activities are recorded herein. s of concern are discussed along with site specific information and weed clearance projects. A listing of all weeds identified and treatments applied is also included. Background The natural bushland area that comprises Brisbane Forest Park between The Gap and Lake Wivenhoe, is one of Brisbane's most critical nature based tourism assets. The relative health of native vegetation in the road corridors and adjoining power corridors is critical to the value of this outstanding asset. Effective management of these corridors is therefore seen as having critical priority because of its tourism value, as well as it being the point where existing and future pest management issues are likely to emerge. Good management of the corridors creates a critical environmental buffer for both the National Parks, adjoining water catchment areas, and private landholders living in the area. Building on many years of voluntary work by the communities of Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo and the Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious Environment Protection Association (MEPA) in particular over the last three years a successful partnership has been built to promote a more coordinated management system for the area's road and power corridors, public lands and private properties. The proposed 5 year partnership is now moving into its second full year of funding and, assisted by the on going drought, results in the first year have been outstanding as the attached report shows. Current partners now contribute a total of $64,000 per annum towards improved integrated management of the area. Of this, $35,000 is a cash contribution used to employ contractors for the bulk of the weed eradication work. mapping, detailed fol up work, project management, and volunteer contributions make up the rest of the project budget. 5 Method For all weed locations (as shown in be maps), weeds, weed abundance and treatment methods are recorded. Results are tabulated in the 's and ' section herein. This section is divided into Powerlink easements and road reserves. This report does not include a complete list of exotic Rat's Tail grasses. Rat's Tail grasses (Sporobolus spp.) are difficult to identify and require microscopic examination for positive identification. Investigation and identification of Sporobolus species is still on going at the time of this report. The end of calendar year report will include data concerning exotic Rat's Tail grasses. The measure of weed abundance employed is defined in Table 1. This measure is intended to be a general indicator of the severity of a weed infestation at any particular site. An abundance measurement given as a range eg., indicates a weed density which is generally but which has one or more outbreaks of density. Vines or creepers which have extensive coverage are assigned a '' abundance rating. Table 1: Definition of weed abundance measure. 12 Notes The foling discussion focuses on some of the weeds of greatest concern to MEPA and other government and non government organisations over the past year in the D'Aguilar Range area. All weeds found are listed in the 's & ' section herein along with the applied treatment. Grasses Rat's Tail Grasses Exotic Rat's Tail grasses are difficult to positively identify and separate from native species without microscopic examination of inflorescences. Consequently, Rat's Tail grass specimens are still under examination at this time and will be reported in detail in the end of calendar year report. Preliminary data shows that Parramatta Grass (Sporobolus africanus) is present under at least one Powerlink Tower (1049 STR 7028) but the extent of the problem cannot be determined until investigations are complete. It should be noted that the Sporobolus genus has received numerous reviews in recent years and nomenclature can vary somewhat between texts. The foling table summarises known exotic species present in Australia. 13 ( (syn. Urochloa decumbens)) can be found in small to large patches along many parts of the Mount Nebo Mount Glorious road reserve along with a number of side roads. Most of these have been treated at least once during this weed clearance program. There has been a considerable amount of regeneration of this weed from seed and a number of patches have been re sprayed. However, future re sprays will be required to control this grass and stop its progression into the Brisbane Forest Park. The worst outbreaks along Powerlink easements are between 1049 STR 7032 to 7033 and between 1047 STR 2066 to Other lesser outbreaks have also been identified (as reported in the 's & ' section herein). Powerlink has funded an initial control program which has included Towers 1049 STR 7032 & 7033 along with the connecting tracks. Illustration 7:, Mount Nebo Road near B5. This has since This infestation is been sprayed. extensive and in places has migrated metres from the track into the surrounding National Park. Substantial fol up spraying will be required. is an invasive grass which has received much attention in the past year from MEPA, Powerlink, Brisbane City Council (BCC) and the Brisbane Forest Park (BFP). These organisations have conducted control programs within the Brisbane Forest Park and along associated road reserves. matures and seeds very rapidly and quickly replaces native grasses. Effective control requires glyphosate spray with timely fol up sprays. Seed heads are readily caught in vehicle suspension components and transported along roads and tracks from where it migrates into the surrounding bushland. It thrives in conditions of full sun to partial shade. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 13 of 55

Broad Leaved Paspalum (Paspalum mandiocanum) Broad leaved Paspalum is another ly invasive grass. It is a shade tolerant grass which als it to readily migrate from tracks into surrounding bushland. Like it too has been the focus of recent MEPA, Powerlink and BFP control programs. Substantial infestations have been identified on Powerlink easements along Power line BS1049 (east of Mount Nebo Road) and along line BS1047 between towers 2066 to The infestation along line BS1049 is extensive. Powerlink has funded an initial treatment program. Fol up spraying and regular monitoring will be required. Significant infestations were also identified along Mount Glorious Road (PN14 15, PN17 18). All infestations in road reserves have received at least an initial treatment. Whisky Grass (Schizachyrium microstachyum (syn. Andropogon microstachyum)) Whisky Grass is noted widely for inhabiting powerline easements. The powerline easements within the BFP are no exception. Interestingly infestations are generally confined to the area in the immediate vicinity of the Powerlink towers (with some exceptions). The foling towers are affected: 1049 STR 7023, 1049 STR 7025 to 7030, 1049 STR 7032 to 7033, 1047 STR 2074 to 2075, 1047 STR 2077 to 2078, 1036 STR 0072 to Small outbreaks of Whisky Grass have been identified beside the Mount Nebo Illustration 8: Whisky Grass under Powerlink tower Road (PN13 PN14, and PEI road). These 1047 STR road sites are in close proximity to Powerlink powerline BS1049. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 14 of 55

Control is the same as for other grasses (glyphosate) but it may also require brush cutting a few weeks prior to spraying to promote new leaf growth (for better chemical absorption). Whisky Grass is a very stiff stalky grass with limited actively growing leaf surface area. It is also important to note that Whisky Grass can easily be mistaken for the native Kangaroo Grass (and Kangaroo Grass for Whisky Grass) at certain stages in its life cycle. Thatch Grass (Hyparrhenia rufa) Thatch Grass is a ly invasive grass which has been identified at Powerlink site 1049 STR Specimens from this site have been recently verified by the Queensland Herbarium. This infestation appears to be isolated and at present is restricted in extent. and continued monitoring is important. Molasses Grass (Melinis minutiflora) Molasses Grass forms a dense ground covering of up to 1 metre tall and is an invasive environmental weed. It has leaves which are coated in a sticky resin making walking through Molasses Grass difficult and unpleasant. It also obscures obstacles making vehicle movement through the grass dangerous. Access in and around Powerlink tower Illustration 9: Molasses Grass (sprayed), PEI road STR 7027 is very difficult as a result of this grass. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 15 of 55

Along road reserves it has been identified in Brisbane City between B2 B3 & B7 PB, and in the Pine Rivers Shire between PB PN1, PN5 PN7 & along the PEI road. Succulents Mother of Millions Mother of Millions covered more area of road reserve than any other weed along Mount Nebo Road between B1 & PB in Brisbane City. It is also common around the Mount Nebo village, and in several places along the Mount Nebo Road between PB& PN14 in the Pine Rivers Shire. Only a few Illustration 10: Mother of Millions (approx. two weeks after infestations were identified along spray) Powerlink easements: near tower 1049 STR 7029; and a large infestation (1000 m2) near tower 1036 STR The full extent of the weed along Mount Nebo Road was not noticed until the clearance program was well under way as much of the infestation was still immature, with just several stands of mature Mother of Millions initially identified. This may indicate that the weed still has some way to go before its population approached stability. Starane with surfactant has been found to be very effective in treating Mother of Millions. Starane should used at 5ml/L with surfactant and each plant must be thoroughly wetted. Response to the chemical is s (about 6 8 weeks). It should be emphasised that the size Mother of Millions infestation along the Mount Nebo Road Illustration 11: Mother of Millions (approx. 6 reserve is substantial and will require a focused weeks after spray). MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 16 of 55

eradication program to adequately deal with the problem. The clearance program reported upon herein was only able to treat a very small fraction of the total Mother of Millions infestation. Other Succulents & Crucifix Orchid Crucifix Orchid and succulents other than Mother of Millions have been manually removed and in most cases have been contained under black plastic sheeting. The black plastic causes the plants to heat up and rot and the sheets will be able to be removed in several months time. Trials on succulents using chemical control are ongoing with encouraging results to date. However, succulent response Illustration 12: Crucifix Orchid, Mount Nebo Road (PN3 to chemical is s and it may be some PN4). time before chemical effectiveness on these weeds is known. Vines Asparagus Area B1 B2 was heavily infested with Basket Asparagus and to a lesser degree Climbing Asparagus. Basket Asparagus was also found around McAfees Lookout (B5 B7). While Areas B5 B7 were fully cleared, parts of area B1 B2 were not done as they Illustration 13: Crucifix Orchid, manually removed and were considered to be in a position placed under plastic sheeting. which was less likely to infest the Brisbane Forest Park and thus of er priority. Bell Bird Grove contains Climbing MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 17 of 55

Asparagus plants and it should be noted that neighbouring private land appears to include large amounts of Climbing Asparagus. Asparagus requires manual removal of the crown from the soil. Mature Asparagus africanus crowns can be up to 400mm across. Testing using cut and dab of stems close to the crown with glyphosate has been unsuccessful. While crowns readily absorbed large amounts of glyphosate, crowns re shot without exception after a few months. Spraying juvenile plants with glyphosate appears to work to a degree but it is Illustration 14: Manual removal of Asparagus near B5. unclear at this stage what kill rate can be attributed to this treatment method. Glycine (Neonotonia wightii) The vine Glycine grows rapidly eventually smothering trees and often also forms a dense ground cover to the exclusion of all else. Fortunately it has only been found in two localised infestations along Powerlink lines and connecting tracks: at tower 1047 STR 2078 and between towers 1047 STR 2066 to Glycine has been identified, and at least initially treated, along Mount Nebo Road in both Brisbane City and Pine Rivers Shire and along the PEI in Pine Rivers Shire. Effective control of Glycine is best achieved with a mixture of glyphosate (at 10ml/l) and Starane (at 5ml/l) with surfactant. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 18 of 55

Cats Claw Areas PN15 PN16 along Mount Glorious Road & also along Fahey Road contain serious infestations of Cats Claw Creeper. These sites have received an initial treatment and fol up spraying continues. A large number of tubers remain dormant in the ground for several years foling above ground vine clearance. This must be dealt with by regular spraying of new growth for up to a decade to ensure Cats Claw Creeper is successfully removed from the infested area. Initial vine clearance is done using the cut & dab method with glyphosate. Foling this initial vine clearance, spraying is required to treat new growth from tubers at regular intervals. Glyphosate spray appears to produce the best results, however Starane is used where native grass ground cover exists. Madeira Vine Madeira Vine has been treated at a number of locations along the Mount Nebo & Mount Glorious Roads along with some side roads. In the Brisbane City area this includes only B6 B7. In the Pine Rivers Shire Madeira Vine is more extensive. It has been located between PN5 PN7, PN10 PN12, PN15 PN16. Large infestations also are found on Darcy Kelly & Forestry Roads in Mount Nebo and Alex Road/Atunga Lane area at Mount Glorious. Most of these sites have received an initial treatment and one or more fol up treatments. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 19 of 55

Woody s An intensive clearance program funded by the BCC & PRSC has been completed which included: PN1 PN7, PN11 PN12, Darcy Kelly Road in the Pine Rivers Shire; and, B2 B7 in Brisbane City. is effectively treated with glyphosate and can be applied as a spray or using the cut/crack & dab method. Creeping ( montevidensis) Unlike the common bush, Creeping only forms a ground cover (up to about 150 mm ) but forms a dense ground covering which eventually chokes out native ground covering plants. It is partial shade tolerant and invades bushland. It has been identified at the foling Powerlink sites: 1036 STR 0074 & 1036 STR STR 2065 Along track to 1049 STR 7029 and at tower 1049 STR Substantial infestations are also known to exist outside the Brisbane Forest Park, in privately owned land between Powerlink towers 1049 STR 7013 & 1049 STR Creeping has also been identified along the Mount Nebo Road in Brisbane City between B1 B2 & B5 PB. Most of these road reserve sites have been treated. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 20 of 55

Location Notes MEPA volunteers have been active along most of the major road reserves within the Brisbane Forest Park. The foling localities have received special attention either because of the weeds present, local concern or as a result of funded weed clearance programs. Brisbane City B1 to PB Brisbane City Council funded a weed control program ($10,000) along the Mount Nebo Road reserve. This aled for the initial treatment of numerous weeds as reported herein. Fol up work in this section of road reserve is being undertaken by MEPA volunteers and residents of Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious. Pine Rivers Shire PN3 to PN4 15km marker (Dale Straight) A 500m section (near PN4) was initially an Envirofund project. It is now a community maintenance site and is for the most part maintained by community volunteers. Pine Rivers Shire PN1 to PN7 Mount Nebo Road A control project was funded by Pine Rivers Shire Council for removal of within the road reserve. Pine Rivers Shire PN8 to PN9 Green Corps Corner Originally an Envirofund project, this site continues to receive community volunteer maintenance work. Pine Rivers Shire PN10 to PN11 Near PN10 (Bailey's Corner) Seven years ago the PRSC began funding work on this site through MEPA. Originally, this site was a major Madeira Vine infestation. It is the likely source of all the Madeira infestations downhill in the upper reaches of the Dawson Creek catchment. This work is ongoing. Recently, the Pine Rivers Catchment Association has funded a Madeira Vine eradication program for Madeira Vine in the upper Dawson Creek catchment, which is being conducted with co operation and input from local landowners in the vicinity. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 21 of 55

Pine Rivers Shire Darcy Kelly & Forestry Roads Mount Nebo Darcy Kelly and Forestry Roads have received local volunteer weed control work over several years. This work has largely focused on, Madeira Vine and Thunbergias. control work on Darcy Kelly Road was funded by the Pine Rivers Shire Council. Local volunteers have cleared a range of weeds at the southern end of Forestry Road in conjunction with a fire management program. Pine Rivers Shire PN11 to PN12 Manorina NP road reserve edge This site is part of the upper Dawson Creek catchment area and borders on Manorina National Park. It was originally an Envirofund site. It has undergone extensive re planting and is now in excellent shape with regard to weeds. Given this site's proximity to the National Park and its position at the head of the Dawson Creek catchment, MEPA is aiming for this site to be pristine in the near future. Pine Rivers Shire PN13 Quarry near Mount Nebo Transfer Station This site has been used as a Council dump site for fill. Fill disposed of at this site by Pine Rivers Shire road engineering crews during the course of the past 12 months has contained Madeira Vine. Foling MEPA initiated discussions, road engineering crews are spraying this site to eradicate Madeira Vine. This has led the Pine Rivers Shire roads Illustration 15: PRSC fill site in old quarry near Mount Nebo division to establish a Transfer Station. shire wide control program on all Council fill sites. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 22 of 55

Pine Rivers Shire PN13 Mount Nebo Transfer Station MEPA initiated discussion has resulted in a weed management contract to control and eradicate weeds around the Transfer Station grounds. This has continued during the past year and has also included some re planting. Powerlink 1049 STR 7028 Tower near Mount Nebo Transfer Station Discussion with Powerlink regarding tower 1049 STR 7028, adjacent to the Mount Nebo Transfer Station, has resulted in a trial project to restore native grasses at this site. This project has been running for 3 years and has provided the basis for extending weed control activities to all Powerlink easements in the Brisbane Forest Park. Powerlink has provided a leading and progressive approach to weed management at this site. Energex is not a party to this project as yet. However, it is MEPA's intention to have a similar program applied to Energex easements within the BFP in the near future. It is hoped that Energex will provide the funding for a comprehensive weed survey of all its easements within the BFP. It has been noted by weed clearance contractors and volunteers that and Green Guinea Grass infests part of the Energex easement above the road reserve near PN1 along Mount Nebo Road. The benefits of clearance activities along this and other sections of road reserve will be negated if the Energex easement is not treated soon. This easement is also of particular concern as it is may also affect the Enoggera Creek catchment within the BFP. Powerlink 1049 STR 7032 & 7033 Powerlink has funded an initial treatment of a large and Broad Leaved Paspalum infestation around towers 1049 STR 7032 & 7033, and on and around connecting tracks. Powerlink responded rapidly to knowledge of the infestations. Funding was made available to MEPA immediately for an initial treatment with glyphosate. MEPA started treatment of these weeds within a few days. Fol up spraying is essential for the complete eradication of these weeds in this area. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 23 of 55

Pine Rivers Shire PN15 to PN16 Mount Glorious This area includes 2km of community re vegetation originally funded by a Main Roads Grant ($10,000) building upon a small project using Main Road's volunteers and Envirofund money and included intensive voluntary activity. This is also an Adopt a Road site. This 2 km strip has been cleared of and re vegetated to 'show case' the Bradley Method of bush restoration. This method involves concentrating on the healthy areas of bush and gradually extending the boundary of the healthy areas. Illustration 16: Mount Glorious (PN15 PN16). Example of Bradley Method of bush regeneration. The line of dry grass in this photo is Poa labillardieri that has died off for winter. Pine Rivers Shire Fahey Road Mount Glorious This area includes a large Cats Claw creeper infestation. Initial treatment of the Cats Claw is almost complete and work has been partly volunteer and partly funded by SEQ Catchments. As stated in the ' Notes' section herein, Cats Claw requires many years of ongoing fol up spraying. Without this, the infestation will rapidly return to its original state. Pine Rivers Shire Harland Road Mount Glorious The south side of Harland Road is the subject of an integrated weed & fire management project. This area has been established as a fire mitigation zone which has resulted in the removal of the mid story vegetation and requires ongoing mid story control. MEPA has been contracted by the Pine Rivers Shire to maintain this area. Pine Rivers Shire Alex Road Mount Glorious The end of Alex Road (bordering with D'Aguilar National Park) included numerous invasive weeds. As a result of a weed clearance and re vegetation program by local volunteers this area is now pristine. MEPA End of financial year 2007 report Page 24 of 55
