6 Planning your holiday 7 Yasawa Island Fiji travel tips The hard part is over; you ve decided where to go; now it comes down to the organising. Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to forget, so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips to simplify your planning. We ve also included a checklist so you don t forget the vital things. k Climate Fiji enjoys a tropical maritime climate with no real winter. Along the coast, May to September generally experiences warm sunny days with little humidity (as a guide 18-28ºC), whilst October to April experiences higher temperatures (as a guide 21-31ºC) and some tropical rain. m Currency The Fijian dollar is the basic unit of currency. Bank notes are issued in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dollars. Coins are issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1 dollar. Tourist visas are granted on arrival, free of charge, for a stay of up to four months for Australian passport holders. We strongly recommend that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy when you book your holiday. i Tipping and etiquette Tipping is not encouraged in Fiji, however, it is up to you to determine whether or not to pay a tip. Some resorts offer a staff social fund where tips are shared. Visitors are asked to dress modestly when visiting villages or in town. p Language The official languages are Fijian and Hindustani, but English is widely used and understood. Fiji has three-pin power outlets identical to those in Australia. m Clothing Visitors to Fiji need only a light, tropical wardrobe. Swimwear, shorts and T-shirts are a must, as is a sulu a colourful piece of light cotton material used as a wrap for both men and women over swimwear. The emphasis is on casual attire, with a possible need to dress in smart casuals for dinner. Be sure to take a good sun hat, sunglasses and a pair of sandshoes or reef sandals.
