2 The Ramble will visit places on Gallipoli, some of which are off the usual tourist circuit. In the six days spent walking and exploring the battlefields, the tour has the aim of providing the participant a greater understanding of the overall campaign. Belmore Travel have been operating pilgrimages since 1988 making us the most experienced operator in this field. The tours are fully escorted from Australia by our Military Historians all of whom have an intimate knowledge of the battlefields. Our groups are kept to smaller numbers to enable better interaction between tour members and the historians. People of all ages travel on our tours, all with a common interest making the time away a never forgotten experience. Gallipoli SAT 20 APR Gallipoli Ramble TUE 08 OCT AUSTRALIA/SINGAPORE/ISTANBUL Depart today on our flight to Istanbul. WED 09 OCT ARRIVE ISTANBUL (D) On arrival Istanbul we transfer to our hotel. The morning is at leisure, before this afternoon s tour of the Old City, which houses such wonders as the Blue Mosque, the ancient Hippodrome and Ayasofya church built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. Accommodation: Kent Hotel or similar Our traditional Gallipoli tour takes in the Dawn and Lone Pine services, providing an emotional and memorable experience. Sightseeing of Istanbul includes a Bosphorus Cruise and city sights. By the end of the tour, participants should have acquired a wider insight into a campaign that shaped the newly Federated nation of Australia. to stroll areas under the guidance of our military historian and gain appreciation of the tremendous odds faced by the ANZAC s who landed there in You will marvel at the advance made against a determined enemy who was aided by the forbidding terrain. Sites visited include ANZAC Cove, Ari Burnu, Beach Cemetery (including Simpson s grave), Lone Pine, Plugge s Plateau, Shrapnel Valley, Shell Green, the scene of the charge by the Light Horse at The Nek, and Chunuk Bair the scene of the epic New Zealand struggle in August start to be in a position at ANZAC Cove for the moving Dawn Commemorative Service followed by the later service at Lone Pine Memorial, which is located over the original Turkish trenches and tunnels. After the services return to our hotel in Canakkale ISTANBUL/TROY/CANAKKALE (B,L,D) This morning drive via Gelibolu the town the Gallipoli Peninsula was named after for lunch, and cross the Dardenelles by ferry to Canakkale. We visit the ancient city of Troy famous for its Trojan Horse and Helen of Troy based on the story The Iliad by Homer. Walk the ruins of the archaeological site before arriving at our hotel which overlooks the Dardanelles. TUE 23 APR THU 25 APR AUSTRALIA/ISTANBUL SUN 21 APR ARRIVE (B,D) On arrival Istanbul Airport we transfer to our hotel where we have early check in. Enjoy an afternoon cruise along the Bosphorus past Ottoman palaces, old mansions and fortresses. Accommodation: Kent Hotel or similar MON 22 APR BATTLEFIELDS (B.PL,D) Gallipoli is firmly embedded in the national psyche of Australians, thousands of whom travel to Turkey each year. During your stay you will explore the historic Gallipoli battlefields with the opportunity BATTLEFIELDS (B.PL,D) Today, we have the option of attending the Commemorative events in honour of the Turkish, French and British forces who lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign (subject to scheduling). A visit to this southern toe of the Gallipoli peninsula will allow us the opportunity to visit the landing beaches within the British sector of Cape Helles. ANZAC DAY (B,PL,D) Today is the purpose of the pilgrimage, 98 years ago young Australians and New Zealanders stormed ashore at dawn, creating the name ANZAC that we hold with pride today. 3 THU 10 OCT ISTANBUL/CANAKKALE (B,D) Today drive via Gelibolu the town the Gallipoli Peninsula was named after, and cross the Dardenelles to Canakkale. Accommodation: Ida Kale Hotel or similar FRI 11 OCT Our first full day on the Peninsula and we will visit all of the locations on and around Anzac Cove, that have become synonymous with the Gallipoli Campaign. We will explore Shrapnel Valley and the surrounding area, before backtracking to Pine Ridge where we will take in the old front line through to Chunuk Bair. This will be a good day to get your bearings and familiarise yourself with the layout of the ANZAC sector. SAT 12 OCT Commemorate the men of the 3rd Infantry Brigade who moved the furtherest inland on the first day of the landing. The adventurous amongst us may consider the climb up Ari Burnu to Plugge s Plateau. Take in the view over Shrapnel and Monash Kokoda Valley to the reverse slope of Second Ridge. We then have the option to explore the 400 Plateau and Owen s Gully towards Adana Bair. We will also examine the Australian advance on the reverse slopes of Battleship Hill. SUN 13 OCT BATTLEFIELDS (B.PL,D) Venture up Walker s Ridge and explore the battlefield of The Nek. Wander down Russell s Top and view Monash Valley from the western lip, then return to the beach via Walker s Ridge and inspect the remains of the Allied landing boat on Ocean Beach. MON 14 OCT Visiting the British battlefileds at Suvla, including Azmak, Lala Baba, Green Hill and Hill 60, known to the Turks as Kiajik Aghala, which was the scene of the bitter Australian struggle in TUE 15 OCT Today is especially dedicated to The Other Half of ANZAC... our New Zealand comrades. Follow in the footsteps of On arrival transfer to our hotel, before an in country familiarisation and a safety brief session before our dinner. CANAKKALE/ISTANBUL (B,L,D) Depart this morning for our return to Istanbul. Dine this evening at a typical Turkish restaurant featuring Belly Dancers at our farewell dinner. Accommodation: Kent Hotel or similar FRI 18 OCT ISTANBUL/SINGAPORE/AUSTRALIA (B) Morning transfer to the airport for our flight home. SAT 19 OCT We leave Myola and trek through Naduri to Efogi 2, our target today being the village of Efogi 1. After breakfast, we begin our Kokoda Track adventure with a walk to Deniki to wartime Isurava. Take a side trip to view the crash site of a Japanese Val Dive bomber (Aichi D3A). It is a very tiring ascent, but for the military history enthusiast, it is a must! Continue on to our campsite at wartime Isurava village. FRI 05 JUL AUSTRALIA/PORT MORESBY (D) THU 17 OCT SUN 07 JUL For a breath-taking view, watch the magnificent sunrise through the Yodda Valley before we walk to Templeton s 2 via Eora Creek. MON 01 JUL Visit the Cape Helles battlefields and cemeteries including the British landing beaches of 25 April 1915, also the Second battle of Krithia fought by the AIF s 2nd Brigade and other sites of interest at Helles. PORT MORESBY/KOKODA (B,D) Transfer to airport for flight from Port Moresby to Kokoda. We will conduct a Battlefield Tour of Kokoda Station, including Kokoda Memorial and Kokoda Museum. We will camp at Kokoda for the night THU 04 JUL Multiple dates and itineraries are available for Kokoda please call for full details. WED 16 OCT TUE 02 JUL WED 03 JUL Trek the famous Kokoda Track, due to the small group size we can trace the footsteps of a relative, and visit sights not available to larger groups. the New Zealanders during the August Offensive towards Chunuk Bair, taking in the locations of the No. 3 Outpost, Chailak Dere, Walden Point and Bauchop s Hill. Trek to famous Templeton s Crossing, continue to 1900 where we will rest for the evening. SAT 06 JUL Today we walk to Myola, scene of the many supply drops made by RAAF and USAF Douglas Dakota biscuit bombers. MON 08 JUL Today we travel from Efogi 1 across Mission Ridge to Brigade Hill. We will conduct a battlefield tour and hold a short service to pay homage to the men of the 21st Brigade. Then we trek down through Menari to Nauro. TUE 09 JUL From Nauro to Ua Ule Creek, take in the sights of Ofi Creek and Ioribaiwa along the way. WED 10 JUL This morning we walk from Ua Ule Creek up to where the Golden Stairs once traversed the Imita Ridge, through Goodwater and across the Goldie River to Ower s Corner. This will be a great day, as you conclude the trek by passing through the famous Kokoda Archway.We stop at Bomana War Cemetery on return to our hotel and enjoy a celebratory meal and a well earned rest. 4 Western Front This tour features ANZAC Day at Villers Bretonneux and begins with Ypres Salient Battlefields, the moving Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate before visiting the famous sites of the Somme with the tour ending in Paris. THU 18 APRIL AUSTRALIA/BRUSSELS Etihad Airlines FRI 19 APRIL ARRIVE BRUSSELS (D) We are met at the airport this afternoon and travel to Ypres. After a freshen up, dinner at our hotel. Then we attend the ceremony of the Last Post at the Menin Gate. This was the location of the original gate leading to the Ypres Salient through which the men marched to the battlefields. At exactly 8 o clock, with the traffic through the gate stopped, wreaths are laid and up to 6 Buglers from the local fire brigade play the Last Post and Reveille. Accommodation: Novotel or similar SAT 20 APRIL YPRES (B,L,D) We drive along Menin Road and visit the Hooge Cemetery. Then we cross the motorway to Polygon Wood. After visiting the wood and the 5th Division monument we lunch at Café de Dreve where host Johan Vanderwalle will talk about his involvement in the local tunnels and trenches. Then we visit the battlefields of Broodseinde, with a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery, and Passchendaele. We then return to Ypres stopping at Langemarck German Cemetery, the only German Cemetery in the salient. SUN 21 APRIL YPRES (B,L,D) Tour the battlefields of Sanctuary Wood and Hill 62 and its museum and trenches, the Canadian Memorial and then on to Hill 60 and the Australian Tunneller s memorial. Then it is on to Poperinge for lunch. This city was just out of battle range and where Casualty Clearance Stations were located and Rest & Recreation was held. We visit the Execution Post, the Allies Rest Centre Toc H at Talbot House and the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. MON 22 APRIL YPRES/FROMELLES/PERONNE (B,L,D) Today we visit Messines Ridge and then travel to Fromelles, VC Corner Memorial and Pheasant Wood Cemetery, scene of the disastrous Australian battle undertaken by McCay s 5th Division in July 1916 passing through Mont St Quentin on our way to Peronne. Accommodation: Hotel Le Saint Claude TUE 23 APRIL SOMME (B,L,D) This morning visit the excellent historial museum in Peronne tracking the history of the First World War. we visit the Hindenburg Line with a guided walk over the battlefield of April/May 1917, and the nearby villages of Bullecourt and Hendecourt. WED 24 APRIL SOMME (B,L,D) Tour the Somme battlefield area including visits to Pozieres battlefield including Brind s Road Walk, the Gibraltar & Windmill sites, Thiepval, Mouquet Farm, Ulster Tower, Lochnager Crater and the Calais ais Beaumount Hamel trenches. THU 25 APRIL ANZAC DAY PERONNE/VILLERS BRETONNEUX/PARIS (B,L,D) Early start this morning for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service before we continue to Paris. THU 19 SEP MON 23 SEP AUSTRALIA/PARIS SOMME (B,D) Tour the battlefield area including visits to Pozieres battlefield including Brind s Road Walk, the Gibraltar & Windmill sites, Thiepval, Monquet Farm, Ulster Tower, Lochnager Crater and the Beaumount Hamel trenches. FRI 20 SEP PARIS (D) On arrival our coach will take us on a brief orientation tour of the city before we have time to explore the Musee d learmee before we check in at our hotel. Accommodation: Hotel Moliere or similar SAT 21 SEP PARIS/AMIENS/PERONNE (B,D) Drive to the Somme area, stopping at Villers Bretonneux, the Australian Monument and Le Hamel. A visit to the Somme battlefields evokes visions of heavy casualties, in fact on the opening day of the battle, 1 July 1916, the British lost almost 20,000 killed. Over the next few days visit and wander the Somme battlefields including Pozieres, Thiepval, Lochnager Crater etc. Accommodation: Hotel Le Saint Claude SUN 22 SEP SOMME (B,D) Morning touring of the Somme battlefields & this afternoon you get to enjoy the minature train ride through woods and hills along the banks of the Somme. The Petit train de la Haute Somme is the last remaining section of a large military network built during WW1. The site is situated right in the zone of the battle of the Somme (July to November 1916) where British and French armies had built a considerable network to prepare for the offensive. TUE 24 SEP SOMME (B,D) A visit to Amiens Cathedral, then north to the extroadinary underground city of Naours situated between Amiens and Doullens. During the First World War, allies occupied the underground caves, with writings of Australian soldiers to be found. It was the Germans that lived there and installed their station of command during the Second World War between 1942 and Also visit the 2nd Australian Division memorial at Mont St. Quentin. WED 25 SEP SOMME (B,D) Today we start with a visit to the tunnels at Vimy Ridge the most poignant spot on the battlefields for the Canadians. Then a visit to the Hindenburg Line, a guided walk of the Bullecourt battlefield and the villages of Bullecourt and Hendecourt. THU 26 SEP PERONNE/YPRES (B,D) Travel to Messines Ridge, then onto Ypres where we include a battlefield walk in Polygon Wood which was captured by the Australian 5th Division on September 26, Tonight the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate. Held at the Menin Gate Memorial on the east side of Ypres, originally the location of the old city gate leading to the Ypres Salient battlefields through which so many passed on their way to the front line. For a few moments the noise of traffic ceases and a stillness descends over the memorial. At exactly hours up to six members of the regular buglers from the local volunteer Fire Brigade step into the roadway under the memorial arch. They play Last Post, followed by a short silence and then play Reveille. SAT 28 SEP YPRES/LONDON (B,D) We depart for London with a stop at Fromelles, the scene of the AIF s first major battle on the Western Front, fought by the 5th Australian division on 19/20 July 1916, then onto Calais for our ferry crossing to Dover before continuing to London.Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner. 6 Thailand/ Myanmar (Burma) Pilgrimage Our traditional Anzac Day tour includes the Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass and the morning service at Kanchanburi War Cemetery. Also included is sightseeing of Bangkok. A guided walk along the memorial walking Trail and a day tour to Three Pagoda Pass. This tour can be combined with a visit to Myanmar, as the only group to travel to Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, time is also spent exploring Yangon. Experience a 1 hour train ride to Wang Po, our epic train ride will cross the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, pass through Chungkai Cutting and traverse the incredible Wampo Viaduct, all constructed in WW2. Accommodation: River Kwai Village Hotel MON 22 APRIL RIVER KWAI (B,L,D) Today the 3.5km walk along the Memorial Walking Trail, from the Japanese Kinsaiyoku Station passing an awesome 25m high rock embankment and large 3 tier timber bridge site before a visit to the Australian Museum. Lunch at Home Phu Toey Resort and an unique chance to visit the Weary Dunlop Museum and the Jack Chalker Gallery. TUE 23 APRIL RIVER KWAI (B,L,D) Full day excursion to Three Pagoda Pass on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Explore the cutting at Takanoon before entering the F Force area, visiting Shimo Sonkuria POW Camp site and Cholera Hill. Stop at Kami Sonkurai before a chance to see the line still present in Myanmar. Thai Railway A tour for the hardy enthusiast, we include some walks to visit old railway and camp sites. The tour includes stays at the River Kwai and Sangkhlaburi to enable a more detailed history of the railway. TUE 05 NOV AUSTRALIA/BANGKOK Upon arrival we will be met and transferred to our hotel. Accommodation: Windsor Suites Hotel WED 06 NOV BANGKOK/RIVER KWAI (B,L,D) An early morning trip briefing and shopping for forgotten needs, before our post lunch departure for Nong Pladuk station to view the joining point of the death railway. Then onto the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thai Burma Railway Centre and the Bridge over the River Kwai, before driving to our jungle hotel. Accommodation: River Kwai Village Hotel THU 07 NOV RIVER KWAI D FORCE AREA (B,L,D) Travel to Tham Grasae to explore the famous Wampo Timber Bridge, then experience an exciting longtail boat ride to view the cliffs, which forced the construction of the terrible Konyu/Hintok section. Return to hotel for lunch, then we drive to Saiyoke Yai Park, view Kinsaiyoku Station area and coal dump, before walking to a large Dutch made timber bridge site and a 200m long Cutting, walking an impressive handmade 25m high rock embankment. Our ability to explore this area will depend on clearance work by Thai National Parks. FRI 08 NOV D FORCE/F FORCE SANGKHLABURI (B,L,D) An early start to drive to picturesque border town of Sangkhlaburi on the shore of Khao Laem Lake. Along the way we visit the site of Tonchan Station, view area of Dunlop s Hintok Mountain camp, then the embankment, cutting and suspension 6

7 WED 24 APRIL RIVER KWAI (B,L,D) Travel to the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall near the original site of Tarsao Station, climb over a genuine locomotive used on the line. At the local elephant camp a chance to have a ride upon one of these wonderful animals. After lunch at Wampo Station, time to wander along the railway and watch the train make its way across the via duct. We return via long tail speed boat along the river back to the hotel. THU 25 APRIL ANZAC DAY (B,L,D) Early rise for the Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass, return to the hotel before our departure to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery for the morning memorial service. Following lunch a visit to Chungkai War Cemetery and the Thai Burma Railway Centre Museum. FRI 26 APRIL RIVER KWAI/BANGKOK (B,L,D) Return to Bangkok via the woodcarving factory to view the craftsman at work. This evening enjoy a Thai dinner with a Thai classical dance exhibition. Accommodation: Windsor Suites SAT 27 APRIL BANGKOK (B,FAREWELL DINNER) Enjoy a restful day day by the pool, shop or explore the wonders of Bangkok on a tour. Accommodation: Strand Hotel TUE 30 APR MAWLAMYINE/THANBYUZAYAT (B,PL,D) Travel by coach to Thanbyuzayat the site of the Commonwealth War Cemetery, to pay homage to 3771 POWs buried here including 1348 Australians. Thanbyuzayat was the POW Admin HQ and base hospital. From the Cemetery we will visit the old joining point with the line to Ye, before a picnic lunch at Sesete Beach. Heading back to our hotel we visit the pagoda made famous by Rudyard Kipling and view the POW s old gaol. WED 01 MAY MAWLAMYINE/KYAIKHTIYO/ YANGON (B,L,D) This morning we return to Yangon. Accommodation: Traders or similar THU 02 MAY YANGON (B,L,D) Today a visit to the famous Shwedagon Pagoda the prominent landmark visible from miles around, believed to have been built some 2,500 years ago. This evening our farewell dinner. FRI 03 MAY YANGON (B,L) This morning will be at leisure for you to shop at Scott s markets or relax by the pool. Early evening transfer to the airport for our flight back home. YANGON/BANGKOK/AUSTRALIA SAT 04 MAY bridge at Takanoon. We then stop to view Neike area, before checking into the hotel and having lunch. Then we walk across the impressive timber bridge to visit the Burmese village and the large Mon Temple and market before returning for free time at hotel. Accommodation: Pornphalin Riverside Resort SAT 09 NOV SANGKHLABURI (B,L,D) We drive to a small craft centre to view some war artifacts, then visit Sangkhlaburi market to buy flowers before going to Shimo Sonkurai. Here we hold a service at Cholera Hill cemetery before exploring the camp site and railway. Lunch at Pornpailin Restaurant before heading to Sonkurai to view the old rail bridge footings, subject to water levels. Then explore Kami Sonkurai camp site and the original Japanese road, which split the camp, before exploring the remains of a cutting made by Aussie POWs. Travel to Three Pagoda Pass to view Burma and village of Payathonzu (over the border). SUN 10 NOV F FORCE SANGKHLABURI/ RIVER KWAI (B,L,D) After a leisurely start, we stop to buy traditional woven products, then travel to Ban Onte to visit the site of the WW2 road bridge, crossed by F & H Forces on their march up the line. Then to Wat Pran Grassi camp site and view a bomb used as a temple gong. Next to Hin Dat to view the hot springs built by POWs and used for R & R by the Japanese, view embankment and bridge sites. Head to Konyu No 2 camp for lunch at Off Road. Walk down Japanese road from K2 Road Camp to K1 River Camp. Accommodation: River Kwai Village Hotel MON 11 NOV HELLFIRE PASS TREK & SERVICE (B,L,D) Travel to Hintok River Camp and explore area, then drive to start point for 2.5 km trek along the Memorial Walking Track to Hellfire Pass. Lunch will be at Home Phu Toey Resort and a unique chance to visit the Weary Dunlop Memorial Park, which includes some of the haunting work of British POW artist Jack Chalker before returning to the hotel. TUE 12 NOV D FORCE TRAIN RIDE/BANGKOK (B,L,D) This morning we travel to Saiyoke Noi Waterfalls to view an original locomotive, cutting and bridge site, before a 1km walk along the existing track, crossing a trestle bridge to reach Thasao market, where POWs traded with Thais for food. We then drive to an elephant camp nearby to observe and ride these incredible animals, before having lunch at Namtok. Then we ride the train back to Kanchanaburi Station, like the POWs, passing majestic scenery along the river. We then return to Bangkok for last minute shopping and a farewell party that night.
