My Dear Colleagues, It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege for me to address you through the columns of our newsletter Parichaya, for the first time after taking charge as CMD. The warm reception that I have received on my joining Nalco is quite overwhelming and heart-touching. I must convey my heartfelt gratitude to all Nalconians for their love and affection shown during my maiden visit to Mines and Alumina Complex at Damanjodi and subsequently Smelter and Power Complex in Angul. As we all know, whenever there is any change at the helm, it creates speculations in the organization. Whether there will be any radical change in the functioning of the management - whether the new leadership will steer the Company to higher level of production and profitability! Well, as we all know Nalco is a flagship PSU of the Govt of India, built on strong fundamentals of world class technology, integrated operations and above all highly talented and motivated human resource base. I must say, the credit for the success of Nalco goes to my predecessors who have built a formidable corporate entity with very high standards of performance during last 28 years of existence of the Company. This makes my job tougher in setting new benchmarks for myself and our Company. Today, we have reached a very crucial stage in our corporate life. We are about to complete the 2nd phase expansion programme and start the 3rd phase thereafter. The Company is 1 also launching greenfield projects in India and abroad involving huge investment of about Rs.40,000 crores in next 2/3 years. These are some of the challenging tasks ahead, and we must muster all our individual strengths, technical skills and managerial expertise to implement these projects successfully and explore newer avenues of growth and prosperity. All these years, Nalco has been successful in bringing together the best of management practices and latest technology that have led to incredible results. At this stage of rapidly changing global business scenario, we need to review our corporate strategies and go beyond aluminium and enter into new areas of growth opportunities in power sector and other metals. I am sure, I will have more and more opportunities to interact with you formally or informally on various issues as we move on. I remain confident that together we can synergise all our efforts and strengths in taking Nalco to greater heights of glory. We, the Nalconians are really fortunate that our Company is located in the sacred land of Orissa which enjoys the blessings of Lord Jagannath and where Nalco has prospered to become a 'Navratna' company and aspiring to be a 'Maharatna' organization in near future. As I sign off, let me thank you all for the overwhelming warmth and affection shown. I also heartily reciprocate your feelings and convey my best wishes to you and your family members. A.K. Pattnaik, GM(CPP), unfurling the National Flag at Vidutnagar Community Centre, Angul At Kolkata Independence Day celebration by Nalco Non Executive Employees Union in Nalconagar, Angul. Excerpts from CMD s Independence Day Address In recent years, Nalco has taken some bold initiatives for expansion and growth of the Company. The Company has already completed its two major expansion programmes and to maintain the leadership position, the Company is now planning for the 3rd phase expansion. Apart from Brownfield expansion, we are also launching ambitious Greenfield projects in India and Abroad. As you know, these are challenging tasks ahead, and the success of these projects depends on the dedication and hard work of each one of us and I am confident that each one of us will contribute to the best of our abilities. While it is true that the expansion programmes will strengthen our business, it may also throw up new challenges if we are not able to cope up with the increasing pressure of production and productivity. There is no ready-made formula for success in today s world. It is the ability of our people to produce more and spend less by economizing on every front which will be key to our survival and continued success. Time has come to reinforce our efficiency as a dedicated and disciplined task force. Today the business scenario is quite challenging in view of prevailing global economic downturn. We have seen sharp decline in our profitability last year, despite increased production of alumina and aluminium. The uncertainties of the future are so vast that we cannot keep clinging to our old policies and practices to remain successful. We must learn from our past, be sensitive to the present and anticipate the adverse possibilities of the future. We have to redesign our corporate strategies to meet the changing environment. We also need to display extreme sensitivity to the development of the society, particularly in the peripheral areas, as well as towards the preservation and improvement of the environment. We are fortunate that we have been given such a strong platform like Nalco to work for the cause of the country. On this auspicious occasion, let us resolve to continue the task of nation building. 12
