5 NTERNATONAL TOLL BRDGES, TUNNELS AND FERRES 1962 This report contains statistics of eleven bridges, one tunnel and nine ferries functioning as toll facilities for vehicles and pedestrians between Canada and the United States Statistics of facilities used exclusively by railways, as well as those on which tolls are not charged, have been excluded Data of firms engaged primarily in other activities and unable to provide separate information for this report are also omitted t should be noted that for the international operations of Washington State Ferries and Black Ball Transport nc, traffic statistics only are presented, as these firms cannot provide separate financial data for their international services Therefore, while traffic data pertain to all twenty-one facilities, financial data relate to only nineteen A significant development in 1962 was that in February, the State Bridge Commission of Michigan which operates the Blue Water Bridge ceased to charge tolls As separate data were not available for that portion of 1962 during which tolls were charged, no statistics for this facility are included in this report Another important event was that on October 31, 1962, the new Sault Ste Marie nternational Bridge superseded the ferry service previously provided by the nternational Transit Company between Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and Sault Ste Marie, Michigan Data for both the bridge and ferry are represented for that portion of 1962 in which they operated A third major development was the official opening of the Cornwall-Massena bridge on July 3, 1962 This date also marked the closing of the Roosevelt bridge which had linked the two cities for fifty years Data presented in this report, however, pertain to the Rossevelt bridge only as the St Lawrence Seaway Authority which operates the new bridge and took over the old bridge reported on a fiscal year basis which did not cover the operations of the new bridge The above mentioned changes account for a large part of the variation in the data from the previous year The following table provides a concise statistical summary of the highlights of this report Number of facilities nvestment $ 62,363,587 88,230,994 Operating revenues, $ 11,609,803 11,476,281 Operating expenses $ 5,911,245 5,855,761 Net operating revenue $ 5,698,558 5, Net income $ 3,850,224 3, Employees No Salaries and wages, $ 2,699,088 2,638,924 Traffic' Motor vehicles No 19,707,225 18,324,838 Passengers other than drivers No 30,293,451 27,817,555 Pedestrians No ,713 Represents 21 facilties
