1 The Patrick and Julia McDonald Family Compiled by Michael F. McGraw Revised February 21, 2018 The narrative that follows was written by the late Father Lawrence Sheehan (d. 1993) whose great grandparents were Patrick and Julia McDonald. It was titled History of the Patrick McDonald Family. Although I do not know the year in which it was written Father Sheehan refers to the fact I wrote the name many years ago and the page is very faded. In 1843, Patrick McDonald I, with his wife and family, left Castle Olivar [Castleoliver - MFM] in the County of Limerick and sailed on the Ruth of Scarberry, a sailing vessel, to come to the U.S.A. The captain s name was William Newham and the voyage took sixtysix days. The ship was destined for New York but the storms drove the ship north and so they came in the St. Lawrence River. They journeyed past Quebec into Lake Ontario and finally to the Port of Oswego. The canal had been completed so they went from Oswego to New York City to get their instructions. They were to go to Solon, New York to a family by the name of Leo. Their journey continued upstate on the canal to Syracuse where they engaged a Negro teamster with a lumber wagon and a team of black horses. They went down through Onondaga Valley to Cortland and finally arrived at Solon. The cost of the trip was $ During this trip, sometimes it was necessary to give the teamster a quart, this was kept at a minimum. They reached Solon after haying in August, Patrick McDonald, after staying in Solon a few days, went over the hill into the Truxton valley where he found work on the old McDermot farm that was owned by Oliver M. Shed. He threshed grain with a flail and received one-tenth of the grain as his pay. That Fall he dug potatoes and picked apples with the same recompense. In the meantime, he rented a log cabin and before winter he had the necessary provisions for the family. He carried the threshed grain on his back to East River on what was known as Carpenterville, where it was ground into oatmeal. He bought a supply of salt pork and brought the family to Truxton. The cabin was situated about two miles south of Truxton village between the Curtis home and the home of Peter Peterson. (These were the names of the owners in later years). It was up a dug road that turned off to the left as you came on the present Route 13 from Cortland. After leaving the log cabin, the McDonald family lived for some time in Truxton village. Land for St. Patrick s Church was purchased from the Jones Estate by John McDevitt and Patrick McDonald for $ Patrick McDonald purchased land on West Hill, now Edwards Road and it was there that the family grew up. The children were Patrick II, Katherine (Hartnett), Margaret (O Donnell), Brigid (Wallace), Maria (Morton), and Arthur who never married. The first mass in Truxton, according to the records of the Diocese of Syracuse, was celebrated at the home of Patrick McDonald in Rev. Michael Heas, a priest from St. Mary s, Syracuse (now The Cathedral), came on horseback, to say this First Mass. The Patrick and Julia McDonald Family Copyright 2018 Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

2 John C. Morton, who died in 1951, spoke of this First Mass and related that many dogs accompanied the parishioners, and there were so many dog fights that Father Heas requested that next time the dogs should be left at home. Much of this history was related to me by my uncle, John Morton. His mother was a child of ten when she came from Ireland. She had told him of the rigors of the voyage and the history of the family. He said that as a boy, in order to stay up in the evening, he would get his mother to speak of these days and could delay by this means his departure for bed. Martha Sweeney, now a resident of Homer, New York, who is a daughter of Patrick McDonald II, has been most helpful in compiling this history. There are a few things that are not clear in this history. First, is the name of the place in Ireland where the family resided. I wrote the name many years ago and the page is very faded. I am sure that the first part is Castle. The second part looks like Olivar but may be Oliver. I hope that future historians will visit Ireland and clarify this item. It is surely in the county of Limerick. I believe that this is all I can offer at this time but my hope is that the descendants of this truly Catholic pioneer family will treasure the faith brought from the Emerald Isle and always be proud of a great heritage. Written by Father Lawrence Sheehan In response to Father Sheehan s first concern the name of the townland where Patrick McDonald lived in Ireland is called Castleoliver. It is found in the civil parish of Particles in Co. Limerick and is located 2-1/2 km southeast of Ardpatrick and 4 km southwest of Kilfinnane. (Ordnance Survey Map No. 73, Discovery Series R ) In the material that follows the basic information for some of the family trees was provided by Jean Lonergan Celeste (gg-granddaughter of Patrick and Julia McDonald) by way of Doug Currie. I have tried to fill in dates and details from census information, church records, and contemporaneous newspaper articles and obituaries to construct the family trees and make connections to other families in the Truxton area. 5 The close proximity of the Morton and McDonald families in this census and on the 1876 map of Truxton was the initial evidence for placing Maria in this McDonald family. Further hard evidence was furnished by a three page family tree of the Patrick and Julia McDonald Family compiled by Jean Lonergan Celeste, their gg-granddaughter. Death of an Aged Citizen , Friday, The Cortland Democrat, Cortland, NY Patrick McDonald, Sr., died at Truxton, on Wednesday, August 18. He was born in county Limerick, Ireland, in 1792, and had thus attained the ripe old age of 94 years. In 1836 at the age of forty-four, he left his native country and found a home in Cortland county, where he has since resided. During this residence of fifty years among us, he made many friends and won the general respect of all his neighborhood for industry and honesty. He became the respected head The Patrick and Julia McDonald Family Copyright 2018 Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

8 of a large family, embracing three generations. His own children were eight in number - four sons and four daughters - of whom five survive him. He passed away from this circle of descendants at the home of his grandson in Truxton - Patrick McDonald, 2 nd, - one of the most substantial farmers of his town. The name McDonald was once familiar to the bar of our county. In a nephew of the deceased, was a partner of Judge Duell, under the name of Duell & McDonald; but his promising career was terminated by an early death in 57. It is rare indeed that men live to the age of Patrick McDonald. To record the death of a man older than the 19 th century - who has lived an average lifetime in each of two countries - is surely breaking another link that binds us to the past. 20 Census Records - Fitzgerald and McDonald 1892 NY Cortland Truxton Michael Fitzgerald, m, 28, US, Cit, Farmer Catharine Fitzgerald, f, 27, US, Cit Floyd Fitzgerald, m, 4, US, Cit Mary Fitzgerald, f, 2, US, Cit A portion of the 1892 census for Truxton, Cortland, Co., NY is shown above. Michael and Catherine Fitzgerald had two children at that time: Floyd (age 4) and Mary (age 2). These two children at not compatible with the two children that Michael and Catherine had in the 1900 census. In addition, in the 1900 census Catherine claimed that she had only given birth to two children and both were still alive. This prevents the use of the died young mechanism to make one or more of the 1892 children disappear. Floyd was a male so it s not possible to play games with the name via bad handwriting or perhaps claiming that a middle name or nickname was used. None of these mechanisms will turn a boy into a girl. The parents seem to be the same in 1892 and 1900 but there is no apparent explanation for the discrepancy in their children s names and ages, except that it might be the wrong Michael and Kate Fitzgerald NY Cortland Truxton Dist 0105 T A Res 29, Family 30, Rents farm #27 Michael Fitzgerald, Head, Oct 1861, 38, M, 13, Indiana, IR, IR, Farmer Kate Fitzgerald, Wife, May 1868, 32, M, 13, 2/2, NY, IR, IR Mamie Fitzgerald, dau, Sept 1887, 12, S, NY, Indiana, NY, At school Ella Fitzgerald, dau, Aug 1891, 8, S, NY, Indiana, NY, At school Irving Fellows, Boarder, Oct 1866, 23 (33?), S, NY, NY, NY, Farm Laborer 1905 NY Cortland Truxton ED01 Michael Fitzgerald, Head, 42, US, Cit, dealer in livestock, Own account Catherine Fitzgerald, Wife, 37, US, Cit, House work G.
