Two bridges on these roads, that are to be inaugurated on Saturday, will save you hours of commuting time. The bridges will be inaugurated by defence minister A K Antony and chief minister Oommen Chandy. The Venduruthy Vikrant Bridge will help improve connectivity between the city and places like Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Thoppumpady, Edakochi and Willington Island in West Kochi, serving the needs of about 2.5 lakh West Kochi residents. The Edappally (ROB) will decongest traffic on National Highway 17 (NH17), which connects the city with suburb northern Paravur and beyond It will facilitate movement of more than 20,000 vehicles per day. "Traffic snarls are a regular feature on the old Venduruthy Bridge which withstood the impact of being rammed by dredgers. During peak hours the new bridge will save you up to 30 minutes," said Eapen Kalapurackal, secretary, Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

2 Page 2 of 5 At present, commuters are using the bridge built by the British in the late 1930s. The new bridge has been named Venduruthy Vikrant, after India's first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, following a request made by the Indian Navy which helped the Kerala Road Fund Board in completing the project. Meanwhile, Edappally ROB, a project that was sanctioned in 2004, will ease traffic on the busy NH17. The frequent movement of trains had turned the Edappally railway crossing into a traffic nightmare with vehicles stalled for hours together near the crossing. "There are times when ambulances get blocked here. There have also been instances when patients were taken out from the ambulance on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. A patient was knocked down and killed by the train while trying to cross the railway line.
