Ltd, Kolkata Processing centre Namkhana Narayanpur Vidyamandir VHSE Jettyghat, Freserganj SMP/FQM/CSF Sultanpur FH to Ganga River Onboard 7 The programme conducted on 27 th July at VHSE school- Namkhana Narayanpur Vidyamandir, South 24 Parganas was attended by 60 students of class XI & XII, during which topics such as MPEDA & NETFISH activities, various aspects of shrimp farming, problems and disease control, conservation of marine resources, HACCP system, capture fisheries, hapa & hatchery management, nursery rearing and stocking, pond preparation and management of grow out of fresh water fishes, integrated fish farming and fish quality management etc. were dealt with and leaflets on conservation & fish quality were distributed. Documentary films on conservation, pollution, brackish water fish farming, and Hilsa conservation were also shown.

In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. Jeyabal, DD, MPEDA Tuticorin who emphasized the importance of hygienic handling of fishes for export promotion. Dr. Vinoth S. Ravindran, State Coordinator, NETFISH detailed the importance of creating such awareness programs among fishermen and the effectiveness in conservation and export promotion. Dr. I Jagdis, Principal Scientist, CMFRI, Tuticorin spoke on importance of critical coastal habitats. Dr. Needhiselvan, Professor, FC&RI, TNFU Tuticorin detailed the importance of participatory approach in the maintenance of coastal and marine resources. Dr. Tagore Derose, Director CRS-Derose Society, partner NGO of NETFISH emphasized the role of fisherfolk in conservation of the marine ecosystems, which is their livelihood dependence. Mr. Radhakrishnan, Program Executive, All India Radio (AIR) detailed the importance of communication and popularization of fishermen aid schemes of MPEDA by the services of AIR. Mrs. Uma Mageshvari, Inspector of Fisheries, TNFD, explained the fishermen about the prohibited fishing practices such as Purse-seining, pair trawling etc., and the importance of registering the boats with competent authorities. Also present in the function were Dr. Ranjit, Scientist, CMFRI, Mr. N. Vijayakumar, JTO, MPEDA and other staffs of TNFD, CRS-Derose and MPEDA. In all the street plays conducted, artists from Anall Gramiya KalaiKuzhu Sandhaiyur, Virudhunagar District performed folk songs and dances emphasizing the above themes. A huge poster emphasizing the sustainable and hygienic practices that are to be followed by mechanized fishermen is displayed at The Lady of Snows Basilica festival where 3-4 lakh fishermen gather for the celebration which is for 15 days.

10 A special awareness programme emphasizing on sea safety and health was organized on at Neendakara by NETFISH, jointly with Department of fisheries Kerala, for boat operators and allied works at Neendakara and Sakthikulangara fishing harbours. The programme was inaugurated by Neendakara Gramapanchayath President Smt. Maya Vimala Prasad in a function presided over by P. Jayaprakash, Authority member MPEDA. K. Suhair, AD Fisheries welcomed the gatherings and Dr. Joice V. Thomas, CE NETFISH, K.M. Sajeev, DySP Marine Enforcement, Peter Mathias, Boat operators association State President, Charley Joseph District Boat operators association president felicitated on the occasion. In the awareness class Shri. K.M. Sajeev emphasized on coastal safety and fishermen security, Dr. Sandhya.R., Deputy DMO on communicable diseases and Shri. Gopakumar.G. Station Officer,Chavara on Fire and Safety in boats. Smt. Sangeetha.N.R., State Co-ordinator NETFISH delivered the vote of thanks. As a solution to remove plastic wastes from the sea and fishing harbour, NETFISH in association with Boat Operators Association Kollam, State Fisheries Dept., Suchithwa mission, Clean Kerala Company, HED and SAF has initiated a programme to collect plastic wastes in sea and harbour and supply to plastic shredding unit. In this joint effort, eco-friendly carry bags will be supplied by NETFISH to fishing boats operating from Sakthikulangara and Neendakara harbours to collect the plastic wastes which they get from the sea. Awareness programmes will be organized in these two fishing harbours about this venture and the method of collection of plastic wastes etc.

Various contemporary issues and new developments in the marine fisheries sector were well displayed by colourful charts in NETFISH stall which attracted fishermen, students, academicians and the general public.

14 NETFISH-MPEDA associated with College of Fisheries, ICAR-KVK and Department of Fisheries in organizing National Fish Farmers Day 2017 at Mangalore on 10 th July Shri. Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Karnataka inaugurated the programme by releasing the Amur carp into aquarium. Dr. M. N. Venugopal, Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore presided over the function. Mr. V. K. Shetty, Managing Director was the chief guest. Dr Shivakumar Magada presented a concept explaining the purpose of celebrating fish farmers day. Dr. Jayaraj welcomed the gathering and Mr. Mahesh Kumar, DD, Department of Fisheries proposed vote of thanks. Dr. Vijaykumar Yargal, DD, MPEDA, Karnataka and Goa and Dr. AsokKumar, DD, MPEDA were present on the occasion. Around 120 farmers from different parts of Karnataka attended the event in which four success stories were presented by the progressive farmers and an open house interaction was conducted towards the end. MAHARASHTRA Extension programmes in Maharashtra, during July 2017 consisted of 15 extension programmes, as per the details given below. Society, Ratnagiri Square mesh fabrication training Sarjekot jetty, Malvan Square mesh fabrication training 23 Five special training programmers on Conversion of rhomboid mesh into square mesh cod ends were conducted during 17 th to 21 st July, 2017 in Sassoon dock, Harne, Karla (Ratnagiri) and Sarjekot, Malvan by which net makers were trained to convert diamond mesh webbings into square mesh cod ends. Mr. H.V. Pungera (Senior Technical Assistant) from CIFT, Veraval provided the technical guidance in these training programmes which was attended by 113 fishers in total. We used 40 mm mesh size webbing with 24 X 3 ply twine and the thickness of twine was about 2.5 mm. We made 2 cod ends of 4 meters length in these 5 days training programmes. Member NGOs- Manav Vikas Sevabhavi Sanstha, Thane, Kalarang Sanskrutik Samajik Sanstha, Raigad, Nagarik Bahu Uddeshiy Seva Pratishthan, Sindhudurg actively involved in arrangement of these programmes. Harbour Data Collectors of Sassoon dock fishing harbour, Harne port

16 and Mirkarwada fishing harbour too supported for the smooth conduct of the trainings. Rajkumar Naik, DD, MPEDA RO Mumbai had attended the inauguration session of first programme. Chairman and Secretary of The Sassoon dock net makers Association had appreciated the work of NETFISH towards conservation of fishery resources. State Coordinator had made introductory speech that this is a new fishing technology and will benefit mainly by reducing juvenile fishing and by saving diesel consumption. Boat owners of various boat associations attended the training. Scientists and Technical staff from CIFT, Veraval demonstrated on how to convert diamond mesh net to square mesh cod end and then each group of fishermen were made to prepare the square mesh cod end by themselves. A documentary film on square mesh was also shown to the trainees. In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month.
