Fly/4WD/Trek/Heli The Bungle Bungle Range, at the heart of the Purnululu World Heritage Listed National Park, is one of the most striking geological landmarks in Western Australia, offering a remote wilderness experience. Located on Jaru and Gija traditional country, we pay our respect to the custodians of this country, and thank them for welcoming us onto their country. Our Bungle Bungle experiences run daily. Purnululu Explorer Departing Kununurra we head south over Lake Kununurra, the Packsaddle Irrigation area, and the upper Ord River on to Lake Argyle, flying over some of our vast cattle stations and the Osmond Ranges, then to the Bungle Bungle Range, it is an imposing sight. The orange and black ribbons across the beehive-like mounds, are clearly visible as you approach from the north. We sweep further over the range and its hidden world of gorges and billabongs are revealed to further showcases Picanniny Gorge and the western escarpment, before setting course for the Argyle Diamond Mine, birthplace of the spectacular Argyle pink diamond. The western shoreline of Lake Argyle and the Carr Boyd Ranges lead us back to Kununurra where, as a bonus, we over-fly the Lower Ord, Ivanhoe Crossing and the northern irrigated farmlands. This extended flight takes us to El Questro, a million-acre cattle station turned wilderness park, with its famous cliffhanging homestead. We continue downstream along the Pentecost River to Home Valley Station, with the Cockburn Ranges in full view to the east. We pass by the historic town of Wyndham, the lower Ord River and wetlands and the Ord River Irrigation Area before returning to Kununurra. Day 1 Ground Tour Marvel at the majesty of Cathedral Gorge and test out the acoustics of this natural amphitheatre. Walk along Piccaninny Creek for a closer inspection of the striped beehive domes. Then head to the award-winning Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge to relax amid the tranquil surrounds before dinner. Day 2 Ground Tour Travel to Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural cleft. Then join a hike along a Livistona palm-fringed trail between the towering orange cliffs. Your local guide will bring the sights to life, describing both their cultural and geological significance. This evening enjoy sunset drinks as the sun goes down on the Bungle Bungle massif. Day 3 Leaving the Bungles we track north towards the Argyle Diamond Mine, now famous for its rare pink and champagne coloured diamonds. Next we follow the shoreline of Lake Argyle and the rugged peaks of the Carr Boyd Ranges. We return to Kununurra and the awesome panorama of the irrigated farmlands to the north and south of the town as your flight continues on to Ivanhoe Crossing before returning along the Lower Ord for touchdown at Kununurra. 6 Explore the untouched Mitchell Falls and Kimberley Coast Fly/4WD/Trek/Heli The far north Kimberley region is home to the Wunambal, Gaambera, Kwini and Balangarra people since the time of its Dreamtime creation, and we pay our respect to the custodians of this country. The North East Kimberley coast is incredible, and not to be missed, it is world class pristine wilderness, you have to see it to believe it! Trek Mitchell Falls This adventure packed day showcases the Punamii-unpuu Hiking Trail, spectacular ancient rock paintings, and the iconic Mitchell River Falls. Departing Kununurra we head to the Cockburn Ranges and Pentecost River and then onwards to the Mitchell Plateau. At 8am we arrive at the Mitchell Plateau airfield and board our 4WD coach to the Mertens campground (Ranger Base) and the start of the 4.5km Punamii-unpuu Hiking Trail. Along the way we can swim, explore and enjoy trail snacks at the Little Mertens Falls. You will be inspired and humbled by the mysterious and ancient rock art found beneath the falls, featuring the mythical Gwion Gwion spirit figures. Next stop is the awesome Big Mertens Falls and the upstream crossing of the Mitchell River, before arriving at the spectacular Punamii-unpuu (Mitchell Falls). Time to enjoy your gourmet picnic lunch, rest and swim. We then meet at the helipad for an exhilarating helicopter ride over the Falls back to base and return in the 4WD coach back to the airfield for a well-earned cold beer, wine or a cup of tea, before the homeward flight, via the Cambridge Gulf, Wyndham and we fly low over the Lower Ord wetlands. The rich farmlands of the Ord Irrigation Scheme guide us back to Kununurra as the sun is setting behind us. This tour requires a moderate level of fitness and agility. Fly across the rarely visited Ngarnyin country, we overfly the Mitchell Falls then continue to Port Warrender and the Kimberley Coastal Camp, the rich pearl farms and the historic WWII Truscott airbase and miles of exotic and pristine coastline. We arrive at the remote settlement of Kalumburu for an intriguing glimpse of this remote community. Our guide and courtesy bus will pick you up to visit the Kalumburu mission settlement, a picnic morning tea is served on the Mission lawns. We visit the fascinating Mission museum, Church and Bakery. You are free to wander and explore the escarpment and swim in the upstream (crocodile free) waterholes. We next rendezvous at the Mitchell Falls helipad for an exhilarating chopper ride over the Falls back to base and a 4WD journey to the luxurious Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge. Take the opportunity to explore and enjoy the unique flora in the dappled afternoon sunlight or swim in the tranquil Camp Creek. After dinner, enjoy the quiet and convivial atmosphere of this very isolated retreat, before retiring to your very comfortable accommodation. Day 2 Awakened by songbirds in the crisp clean air, enjoy an unhurried breakfast, before you transfer to Mitchell Plateau airfield. Depart Mitchell Plateau at 9am and re-join Kingfisher s Wandjina Explorer Tour flight to the coast and to your next stop. We fly over Port Warrender and the Kimberley Coastal Camp, the rich pearl farms of Vansittart Bay, the WWII Truscott airbase, and miles of exotic and pristine coastline. 10am Arrive at the remote settlement of Kalumburu for a tour of the Mission and the Community, including the Art Centre and the historic WWII aircraft graveyard. Then a picnic lunch under the gum trees at a local swimming hole. At 2.30pm Depart Kalumburu for the remote Timor Sea coast, overflying Faraway Bay, King George Falls, Berkeley River, and the mighty Cambridge Gulf. At the mouth of the Ord River we track east following its meandering path and tidal floodplains where saltwater crocodiles are often seen soaking in the midday sun. You will pass by Roof Top Hill the very recognizable backdrop to Baz Luhman s Australia movie. The Ord River Irrigation Area and its expanding farmlands will then be revealed as we set course for the green and vibrant townsite of Kununurra. 8 From Dreaming to Diamonds The North and East Kimberley is home to more than twenty distinctive language groups or clans, including the Miriuwung of Kununurra, the Gija people at Warmun (Turkey Creek), the Jaru of Halls Creek, and the Wunambal, Gaambera, Kwini and Balangarra people of the remote North East Kimberley coast. Kingfisher Tours partners with a number of local traditional owners for amazing experiences into the heart and soul of this extraordinary country. The Jaliwang Journey This is a truly unique experience, in partnership with Luridgii tour owner Ted Hall who is one of the Miriuwung and Gija traditional owners of the Argyle Diamond Mine Site. We depart Kununurra in a light aircraft to follow the trail of the dreamtime Barramundi (the Jaliwang to the local Miriuwung people). Ted Hall tells his mother s enchanting story of the Jaliwang as it evaded fish traps set on the Ord River, carving its way south, and creating the Dunham River as we know it today. En route we survey the vast Sandalwood plantations at Kingston s Rest, the awesome Ragged Ranges and of course the Argyle Diamond s pit and mine-site at Matso Range, where the Jaliwang came to rest. After 50 minutes in the air we set down at Warmun Community near Ted s home on Glen Hill Station (Mandangala), where you are welcomed with a traditional Muntha, a ceremony to ensure safe passage through this land at the world renowned Warmun Art Centre. Enjoy traditional billy tea and damper at Warmun Arts and be guided by the Gija artists through the gallery, this is the home of Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie and Lena Nyabi then we will board the Luridgii Tours coach and take the 40 minute back road to the Argyle Diamond Mine. Once through security we climb the tailings wall to the lookout over the processing plant, while the Luridgii guide tells of the geological formation and eventual discovery of diamonds on their country, of the sorrow at the desecration of an important sacred site, but also happily of the opportunities and partnerships that have benefited his people. We next take a close-up inspection of the processing plant, and the ingenious technology used to extract these precious gems. The Luridgii guide will take you to visit the mine gallery to view some of largest diamonds ever extracted and the mine-site village where a gourmet picnic lunch and refreshments are served at the miner s mess lookout. Our coach then heads out to Smoke Creek and the headwaters of Lake Argyle where your vessel awaits. Hosted by Lake Argyle Cruises, the late afternoon and sunset cruise across the full length of Lake Argyle offers unique opportunities for bird-watching and photographing the rich red escarpments and islands, you will learn of the ancient and modern history of this extraordinary man-made lake. Before departing Kalumburu we pay a visit to the community art centre and the WWII aircraft graveyard where the remains of many old aircraft can be studied. From Kalumburu we track to the mouth of the Drysdale River then on to Faraway Bay and the nearby King George Falls. Our tour continues along the Timor Sea Coast with its pristine beaches, rocky headlands and islands, and remnant rainforests. As we traverse the amazing landscape and come to the edge of the desert you see Wolfe Creek Crater emerge on the landscape. Dating has shown that the meteorite crashed to Earth around 300,000 years ago. It would have weighed more than 50,000 tonnes and is thought to have been travelling at 15 kilometres a second, a speed that would have taken it across Australia in 5 minutes. The Wolfe Creek meteorite crater was only discovered by Europeans during an aerial survey in However, it has long been known to Aboriginal people, who called it Kandimalal, and tell of two rainbow snakes who formed the nearby Sturt and Wolfe Creeks as they crossed the desert. The crater is believed to be the place where one snake emerged from the ground. The tour returns via the historic goldfields and the Old Town of Halls Creek.
