THANKS Editor of this issue - The Secretary Valley R/C Model Club was formed in January 1965 AMA Charter # 580 President s Corner President s Corner January was another very good year, actually the 50 th such year for the club. Major events included the annual Fun Fly which took place at Round Top Park, Luchaco field. It was number 42 run successfully by Contest Director Dan Luchaco. Cooking by Dean Luchaco went well. We made a decent profit again, under the watchful eye of Dean. Thanks to our donors and workmen. The revised format has proven popular with open flying throughout the day and night, even during competition. Flying activity continues, about average this year. Electrics continue to grow in numbers, except for a diehard. Quadracopters (aka drones) have gone from the next new thing to everyday. The FAA now considers them a threat to civil aviation as their cost has dropped dramatically, capabilities increased dramatically and uses proliferate beyond the modeling world. Technology in modeling remains cutting edge, including functioning instrument panels, First Person View (FPV) and telemetry, and in the case of quadracopters, GPS guidance is standard. Dan L. made a run at flying every day for a year. He made #190 days with his killer Edgy before he lost his mind. It has now been 7 years since we moved sides at the field. There was no new porcupine damage this year, given our armored outhouse. The front field fencing is nearly complete in spite of rocks. The new mower is enjoyed by everyone and the whole field is now mowable. Plans are afoot to replace the old reliable Snapper if the fun fly s remain profitable. Gliders are making a comeback, both towed and hand launched. They crash just like their powered brethren. Valley R/C Membership is at 35 members. RTP Field is in good shape and will be ready for flying when the park opens in May. The pond area is being expanded at the park. Indoor Flying at Athens School continues to grow with Towanda, Harford, Vestal, Binghamton & Elmira flyers joining VRCMC Members.. Contests and Fly-Ins in Canada, New York and PA provided extra fun for many members. The 2014 Club Banquet and Snow Fly were held in February. On Feb.28 we will celebrate our club s 50th Anniversary! Valley R/C hosted their 42nd Contest in July 2014 and the 43rd edition is set for July 18-19, Join us in 2015 for our 51st year of Flying Fun in VALLEY R/C MODEL CLUB! Secretary Dan

2 Winter flying continues at the local Soccer Field as the Blue Swan airport is history, taken over by gas companies. Indoor flying continues to be popular at Athens Lynch Bustin School about 2 times per month, thanks to Carl Shay. Popularity is growing gradually although foam planes are still common, smaller bind and fly planes such as the Champ, helicopters and quadracopters are multiplying rapidly. Jeff Winemiller of Time Flys Hobbies appears now and then with large numbers of ready to fly indoor micros to sell. Helicopters have faded a bit and glow planes still persist for stunt and contest activity, though electrics are gaining at the fun fly. Micro helicopters have proliferated and made heli flying popular in that size category because of their relative indestructability. As time passes the micro s are gaining more and more performance. Technology continues to change, electric planes are getting bigger. Li Ion batteries dominate as their prices drop even though they catch fire now and then. Also 2.4 Gig spread spectrum radios are the standard, and 72Mhz rigs nearly extinct. The varieties and performance of the 2.4 Gig rigs is improving rapidly with telemetry is now nearly standard on the new rigs. FPV is now available indoors as well as outdoors. Our club website has garnered many inquiries, visitors and new members. It is maintained by Howard Mahady. E- mail, and more recently texting, enables a rapid gathering of the boys for events and impromptu flying. The internet continues to drain many pocketbooks of modeling cash and e-bay has been invaded in a big way by Dan who has become a purveyor of used equipment. Friday night Shop Night remains popular during the cold dark windy nights of winter, thanks to Steve Luchaco. Something new each time. The annual WRAM show and especially the Toledo Weak Signals shows remain popular in the spring as well as the much closer NEAT fair towards fall. Dan Luchaco s electronic newsletters continue to keep everyone updated and informed about hobby events. Formal club meetings are every other month with many informal gatherings in between. Paul WORK BEEs at RTP Field to be scheduled in the spring to remove brush around the perimeter and roll the runway smooth.
