TIGER RAG NEWSLETTER OF THE TIGER MOTH CLUB OF NEW ZEALAND INC. JUNE 2018 Patron: Simon Spencer-Bower. President: Keith Skilling. Secretary: Graeme Wood. Secretarial address: The Secretary, Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand Inc., Postal Centre 14, Papakura, Auckland, Phone; (09) Mobile: Website: LIFE MEMBERS: Simon Spencer-Bower, Jim Lawson, John Pheasant, Loretta McGarry, John King, Alan Land, Les Marshall, Eddie Doherty, Jeanette Lei. This is a sequel to the May 2018 issue of the TIGER RAG and is accompanied with a few pictures, in which I am sure, some of you will find evidence of your attendance. We had many visitors to our AGM Fly In at Whitianga and judging from the various comments, they enjoyed, very much the guided tours, airside, around the various aircraft. There was one particular person who was photographed walking airside, unaccompanied, we do not know where he came from and we do not know where he was going, carrying a box of, we do not know what. If anyone can enlighten us to his identity, please contact the Secretary who s address is in the heading. The picture of the mystery man appears below. The Committee is already planning our next Fly In, where to? Taumarunui of course. Make sure you keep October free, that your aircraft is airworthy and that you are fit and well for the rigours of the weekend. We hope you enjoy the pictures on the following pages.

SOME SCENES FROM THE AGM AT WHITIANGA COURTESY OF JOHN KING, JERRY CHISUM, Jim Lawson and Dave Homewood. Jan Chisum arriving at Whitianga in her DH60 Moth. Jan passes the QE2 tied up at Tauranga. Jan looking for Hot Water Beach. Wayne Edwards Tiger Moth arriving at Whitianga, piloted by Louis McNair. Wayne in front seat. Jan passes the finishing line in the time trial, with Michaela, (Miss Sweden) in the front seat. Amanda Rutland arrives in Bill Lambs Tiger from the Great Barrier with Jeanette Lei in the front seat.

2 Stan Smith s Fox Moth flown in by Graeme Wood and John Eaton s Fox Moth. The best bi-planes ever produced by de Havilland. Les Wilson with his Auster and Stan Smith s Auster flown in by Jim Schmidt with his wife Cheryl. The first Tiger to arrive, ZK-BAL from Gisborne flown in by Paddy Gallaghan, with Wayne Thomas in the front seat. The one and only Chipmunk to arrive, my old friend, flown in by Neil McHugh, the now owner. Neil was awarded the Loretta McGarry trophy for the best vintage aircraft there. Amanda and Jeanette thawing out and comparing notes. John and Penny Baynes arrive from Gore via the Great Barrier.

3 The Friday night barbeque begins. The barbeque continues well into the night. Saturday morning, pre-competition briefing ensemble. Pete McVinnie, Whitianga Aero Club and resident of Whitianga, does a great job with the briefing. The time trial, ladies and gentlemen, on your marks, get ready, steady, GO. Grant Wilson racing to the end

4 Some of the early attendees at the pre-dinner drinks. The boys corner. The girls corner. Some of the early birds, into their dinner already. More of the early birds, including ACE Edwards, aka Donald Trump.

5 Much sought after winners trophies. Amanda Rutland, winner of the time trial, with the windy trophy Well done Amanda Jim presents Wendy and Wayne with the EF Harvie Mug for being the most helpful members over the weekend, particularly at the Great Barrier. Explain the joke to me afterwards. John Eaton gets the Scott Greaves Memorial Trophy for the best return to service of his Fox Moth. 6

Robert McNair wins the Dudley Payne Trophy for the Most Magnificent Moth. Robert is a serial winner of this cup with his Tiger Moth ZK-AUD. Robert also won the Simon Spencer-Bower Cup for Aerobatics and the Stan White Memorial Cup for the Perfect Loop. Some of our younger members think Robert has done well. The group consists of Angus Edwards, Bevan Dewes, Michaela (Miss Sweden) and Robert s son Louis, who has recently gained a rating in a Tiger Moth and is now going for his aerobatic rating. Vice President Jan Chisum, presents John Baynes with the John Crosbie Trophy for the Most Interesting Flight to the AGM. John is another of these serial winners, of this trophy in particular. He has had some interesting flights to the various AGMs.

7 Baynsie is about to pull a fast one on unsuspecting Jim and after a long dissertation presents the John Crosbie Trophy to him, with the final words something like, You deserve this trophy, it has taken you years to get here with many interesting incidents on the way. ACE Edwards, AKA, Donald Trump after a very long speech, shakes hands with Jim the retiring President. The footnote to this picture, by the photographer says, An emotional Hoorah to Jim as retiring President 8

The night was not yet over, there was still a few surprises for Jim. Unbeknown to him, Jerry Chisum designed a plaque and in collaboration with others, including Wayne Edwards, had it made up to be presented at the Last Supper, as it were. In appreciation of the magnificent leadership of The Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand. The Man and His Machine. 9 Sub titles on this page by the photographer.

Jan Chisum, who passed on her long standing position as Vice President at the AGM, about to take Tracey for a blast round the patch in her well prepared DH60 G Moth. This is the same Moth her Father, Stan White, flew out, solo, from the UK to Australia just after WW2. The #37 (Thames) ATC Squadron were present over the weekend to give us much needed assistance with all the things that go on at an event such as our AGM fly in. In recognition of their efforts all the Cadets present were taken for flights by a team of obliging Tiger Moth Pilots. Well done Team. Tracey was one of the lucky ones, she got a flight in the oldest aeroplane on the field. By comparison, this is what Jan s DH60 looked like when it was painted up to represent Jean Battens Plane for the film, Jean. Jan and her husband Jerry played big parts in the film which I am sure most of you would have watched. Please note the folded wings, which was common practice with aeroplanes of that era. Folded wings like this meant that the plane could be hangered in a much smaller space, or many more planes could be stored in a big hangar.
