One of the first National Parks in Australia, this World Heritage Wilderness Area is a must see for visitors to the state who wish to experience the rare beauty Tasmania has to offer. On this 4 day trip we will discover the abundant wildlife, rare and unusual vegetation and spectacular scenery with the ultimate goal to climb Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff. (Recommended group flight to be confirmed) Your guides will present a general overview of the trip, conduct a gear check and provide the opportunity to hire/borrow any equipment/clothing that you may need. We will drive to Cradle Mountain which will take approximately 3 hours including a mid journey lunch and leg stretch in Sheffield Tassie s town of murals. On arrival we will unload the bus before setting off on an afternoon walk around the beautiful Dove Lake. During the walk your guides will take the time to introduce this spectacular area to you the history of the region, its pioneers, the amazing prehistoric plant life and impressive views of Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake you will witness. An optional visit to the Devils at Cradle - Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary ( is available at 5.30pm. A nocturnal feeding tour costs approximately $28 per adult. Returning to our cabin accommodation, your guides will prepare your evening meal for you to enjoy as you relive the excitement of the day & prepare for our full day in the National Park tomorrow. Conditions permitting, your guides will offer you the opportunity to trek to the base of Cradle Mountain and to climb to its summit. The breathtaking 360 degree views on offer are a worthy reward for the effort required to reach the summit. If weather or other conditions prevent our summit attempt there are numerous alternatives, a popular one is the challenging Face Track which skirts beneath the well known outline of Cradle Mountain. Your guides are passionate about this wonderland and will provide a day full of highlights. Blue skies or rough weather this region provides a very special experience. Your guides will provide a packed lunch and plenty of snacks to keep your energy up whilst wandering throughout the day. When we return to our cabins you will be able to freshen up and relax while your guides prepare another hearty evening meal. Overnight - Discovery Park Cradle Mountain (standard cabin - triple share) Walking Distance 12km Walking Time 8 hours meals: B,L,D DAY 3 Summit Barn Bluff, return to Cradle Mountain Hotel accommodation Today we have the option to trek out to the stunning spire of Barn Bluff. The days walk is of similar grade to our efforts in summiting Cradle Mountain, although the distance is further but scramble on the summit rocks not quite so steep. After a big day in the World Heritage wilderness we will retreat to the comfort of Cradle Mountain Hotel we you ll enjoy a delicious dinner and celebrate a great trip. Walking Distance approx 22km Walking Time approx hours meals: B,L,D DAY 4 Relax at Cradle Mountain, transfer to Launceston Airport where the trip concludes This morning we have some time to relax. We depart Cradle Mountain with the day free to explore Liffey Falls, Launceston s city centre and the stunning Cataract Gorge before being dropped off at the Launceston Airport. (Recommended group flight to be confirmed) meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any change in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control. climate Tasmania is located between Latitudes 40 and 43, with the islands temperature and weather moderated by the surrounding oceans. The cool temperate climate offers four distinct seasons which can interchange on any given day of the year. Summer in land temperatures average 24 degrees with nights averaging a relatively cool 8 degrees. Rainfall in Tasmania is far higher than any mainland counterpart and averages 2700 millimetres on the west coast and central highlands. Tasmania s alpine regions can experience heavy rainfalls and temperatures below zero degrees in summer. For group safety and comfort, having adequate gear and equipment for the local conditions ensures accessibility to the wilderness is enjoyed. Tasmanian Expeditions has a specialist gear list available that details what clothing and equipment is required for each of our Tasmanian adventures. a typical day Each day, each group, each guide may influence itinerary details but the following will give you an idea of daily timing. The tour commences with airport pick up Tasmanian Expeditions Pty Limited -
5 After meeting the group your guides will conduct a thorough trip briefing and will include the following: An outline of the general itinerary/objectives A cross check of essential gear and clothing required Distribution of all hire gear included in the tour price and/or requested Explanations of what is expected from the group and individual participants Identification of inherent risks of the trip and outline emergency procedures Explanation of Leave no Trace principles and overall conservation strategies Forecast weather conditions Most days on an accommodated tour consists of a wakeup call around am so you can rise and be ready for a wonderful breakfast put on by your guides. Then it s off on your walk for the day. Lunch needs to be carried for the day in the day packs and you get to enjoy some of the best lunch stops with views that Tasmania has to offer. Again let your guides prepare the delicious and healthy spread while you either have a swim or just relax and take in the views. At the end of a day s walking itinerary you re usually met by the driver and vehicle and returned to your accommodation for the evening to enjoying a high quality Tasmanian dinner while watching the sun go down, this is a great end to the days walking. Your guides will not expect any assistance but will appreciate it, if you have the energy, to make things happen that much quicker and easier. Food Tasmanian Expeditions aims to provide high quality local Tasmanian produce to supply interesting and nutritional meals for its guests. Our guides have remarkable wilderness culinary skills and pride themselves on the variety, quality, nutritional levels and presentation of their meals and their ability to cater to a wide range of dietary requirements. A carefully selected menu will be designed for the WWOT Wild Weekend, and will include some or all of the following: Breakfasts ranges from cooked to continental Lunches variation each day, wraps or fresh salad rolls, fruit, with an assortment of cold meats Dinners 2 3 courses of fresh Tasmanian foods (where possible). dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance we are able to cater for vegetarian diets, and can assist with food intolerances. Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us at least a month prior to your trip to determine whether we can cater for your dietary needs. Please note that options are likely to be limited in remote locations or alternatives can be more expensive or unavailable and there may be times when those with special requirements need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. hygiene Tasmanian Expeditions is deeply committed to ensuring the natural heritage and wilderness values of Tasmania are undiminished for generations to come. The following policies & techniques for personal hygiene in the wilderness will help to reduce our impact and ensure that the trip is sustainable. *Please keep toiletries to an absolute minimum. If biodegradable products are brought on Tasmanian Expeditions Pty Limited -
6 tour, their suitability will be discussed at your pre departure briefing. We suggest leaving items such as shampoo, soaps & hair products behind. Natural 100% tea tree oil serves as a good antiseptic soap/shampoo alternative. *Toilet paper is supplied on every tour and most bushwalking tours will have composting toilets available. On remote expeditions there is the need to dispose of waste as per leave no trace principles which will be discussed at your pre departure briefing. *On many of our bushwalking tours there will be the opportunity to have a swim or bathe in nearby suitable lakes & streams. A quick drying micro/travel towel is recommended for washing/ drying. *If possible, organic/natural brands of insect repellent, sunscreen, deodorant and toothpaste are preferred small quantities are lighter to carry! *Sanitising hand gel will be provided at mealtimes & around camp/cabins. Having a small personal quantity is also recommended approx 60ml is sufficient. what you carry For your expedition you will need to carry all equipment in a day pack. This will need to include the following items: Water and snacks Wet weather gear All personal items that you have decide to bring along Depending on the quantity of personal gear the average pack weight will be between 5 8 kg. equipment required A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information supplied on booking. protecting the environment Tasmanian Expeditions operates in some of the world s most pristine and beautiful environments, including the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It is our priority to leave these places unspoilt and as they were for all future visitors to enjoy. The Leave No Trace principles and minimal impact practices specific for your adventure will be introduced at the initial group briefing and reinforced by your guides when required out in the field. Following our hygiene suggestions listed on these trip notes is a productive first step in helping the environment. Our environmental policies together with your help and cooperation will ensure that we can safe guard the pristine wilderness in which we operate.
