17 CITIES AND COASTLINES CAPE TOWN With Table Mountain, one of the most spiritual places on earth, at its heart and two oceans at its feet; the city of Cape Town, strategically situated at the south-western tip of Africa, has been famed for centuries as the Tavern of the Seas. Vibrant, cosmopolitan and an eclectic mix of old and new, this laid-back city is as much at home with its 17th century castle whose cannons have never been fired in anger as it is with its sleek skyscrapers and trendy malls. Home to South Africa s first mosque, oldest wine farm, a 350-yearold garden, award-winning eateries and timelessly beautiful beaches, it s no surprise the legendary spectral ship, the Flying Dutchman, has spent eternity sailing the city s shores. 23 LEGENDARY LANDSCAPES KRUGER AND SURROUNDS The world-famous Kruger National Park is South Africa s largest game reserve and one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries on the planet. The Kruger National Park has nearly two million hectares of unfenced African wilderness, in which more mammal species roam free than in any other game reserve. Within the Kruger National Park lies &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve, the first private game reserve to be incorporated into this famous park; and bordering the Kruger are other renowned private reserves such as the Sabi Sand and the Timbavati Game Reserve. The Kruger National Park is easily accessible via Johannesburg (only a fourhour drive away) and is near to scenic towns such as Graskop, White River and Pilgrims Rest. KRUGER AND SURROUNDS SABI SAND GAME RESERVE The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is situated in the southwestern corner of the worldrenowned Kruger National Park and consists of hectares ( acres). It is the most prestigious game reserve in South Africa, and is famous for incredible leopard sightings. With one of the richest game populations in the country, the chances of seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) are excellent. SABI SAND GAME RESERVE &BEYOND PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE Set within easy reach of the Indian Ocean coastline and the famous isimangaliso / Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is known for its abundant wildlife, diversity of habitats and wide range of safari activities. Adding to Phinda s wildlife charms, the marine diversity of nearby Sodwana Bay is easily accessible, with exceptional scuba diving, fishing and even turtle watching listed as some of its main attractions. &BEYOND PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE MADIKWE GAME RESERVE AND WATERBERG Discover a range of safari experiences at Madikwe Game Reserve, in South Africa s North West Province. This hectare ( acre) reserve boasts the Super Seven adding cheetah and African wild dog to the famous Big Five. The Madikwe region is rich in history, having seen the passage of the famed warrior Mzilikazi, as well as Dr David Livingstone and Sir Cornwallis Harris. Nearby, in South Africa s Limpopo Province, you will find the Waterberg region. Meaning Water Mountain in Afrikaans, this region boasts a spectacular tapestry of untamed wilderness, interspersed by valleys and undulating hills that flank the blue-tinted expanse of the Waterberg Mountain Range. EASTERN CAPE GAME RESERVES A province of dramatic contrasts, South Africa s Eastern Cape is home to some of the country s most varied landscapes. From the arid stretches of the Karoo to the lush rolling hills of the Transkei, the Eastern Cape is a tourist mecca. Here, a number of Big Five game reserves boast an exceptional range of game viewing adventures that will delight any wildlife enthusiast. The Addo Elephant National Park provides some of the world s most spectacular elephant viewing and the unique opportunity to view marine life such as whales and great white sharks. 29 27 NAMIBIA Namibia is the soul of Africa, characterised by vast open spaces, breathtaking scenery and great contrasts - ocean, dunes, mountains and deserts. This vast country of rolling dunes and swirling mists stirs the spirit and moves the heart. Namibia is so large and sparsely populated that it is possible to discover enormous open spaces without roads, towns, trees or even stones; just the lonely desert wind passing through one of the most enchanting corners of the earth. Africa s largest game park, the Namib-Naukluft Park, is a must see when on safari in Namibia, with its magnificent sea of rolling red dunes at Sossusvlei. Etosha National Park is one of Africa s great parks in both size and diversity of wildlife. In the country s far north eastern pocket is the captivating and largely unexplored Caprivi Strip.

33 LEGENDARY LANDSCAPES NAMIB DESERT The Namib Desert is a world of vast spaces, endless horizons, dramatic desert scapes and jagged mountain heights. One of the oldest, driest and most pristine areas on earth, the Namib Desert plays host to the largest private nature reserve in Southern Africa, the NamibRand Nature Reserve, which spans hectares ( acres) of unspoiled desert wilderness. The spectacular dunes at Sossusvlei, arrayed in magnificent hues of orange, tower over a vast, dry pan. Over 230 metres (750 feet) high and constantly shaped by the wind, these breathtaking dunes are among the highest in the world. SWAKOPMUND AND SKELETON COAST Namibia s western coast plays host to an array of popular destinations most notably, Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast. The charming town of Swakopmund retains a strong German flavour from its cobbled streets and picturesque buildings to typical German restaurants and pubs. Further along the coastline is the atmospheric Skeleton Coast, named after the many ships that sank here over the past few centuries. The rusted remains of wrecked ships are often surrounded by swirling mists, and make for moody and dramatic visuals. The Skeleton Coast is home to the flourishing Cape Cross seal colony one of the largest breeding colonies of Cape fur seals. DAMARALAND The breath-taking mountainous region of Damaraland is home to an assortment of desert-adapted wildlife such as elephant, rhino, zebra and lion, which eke out an existence in this near-barren landscape. A not-to-be-missed attraction is the picturesque Brandberg, Namibia s highest mountain, which is home to thousands of ancient rock paintings most notably the White Lady. The rocky outcrops of Twyfelfontein feature exceptional Bushmen engravings, which are considered to be some of the best preserved etchings on the continent. Visit the Petrified Forest, which dates back millions of years and offers a haunting landscape of gigantic fossilised trees. NAMIB DESERT SWAKOPMUND AND SKELETON COAST DAMARALAND ETOSHA Etosha is one of Africa s great wildlife parks and Namibia s prime wilderness conservation area. Spanning a vast square kilometres (8 610 square miles), it consists mostly of grassy plains around a huge salt pan, which becomes a beautiful lake after heavy rains and attracts large flocks of pink candy-floss-coloured flamingo. Etosha hosts a vast array of animals, including the Big Five, as well as giraffe, and rare and unusual species like the black-faced impala, Hartmann s mountain zebra or the smallest antelope in the world, the Damara dikdik. ETOSHA WINDHOEK Namibia s capital, Windhoek is a bustling metropolis that is unexpectedly neat and orderly, though this is perhaps less surprising when one considers it was a German territory for many years. This is the main port of call for most tourists, and all travellers pass through the city at least once. Situated in a pretty valley, Windhoek boasts buildings very much in the German architectural style. The German presence can be strongly felt in the food, restaurants and, of course, the beer. The Namibian beer is said to be the best in Africa and is brewed in Windhoek. WINDHOEK 31

Additionally, the project intends to create a viable breeding population of rhino in Botswana, thus broadening the gene pool and increasing the habitat of rhino in Africa; in this way stimulating the growth of the country s rhino population. To date, the project has successfully moved 25 rhino. The Okavango Delta has proven to be a successful rhino relocation habitat and Botswana has a strong security and monitoring framework in place, with the country s military helping to protect the endangered species. Continuous funds are being raised to move further batches of rhino to a undisclosed destinations within Botswana. By booking a safari with &Beyond, a USD 10 contribution towards the project will be added to the guest s itinerary. 43 NATURAL WATER WONDERLANDS OKAVANGO DELTA Forever in a constant state of ebb and flow, the iconic Okavango Delta lies in stark contrast to its surrounds in the heart of the Kalahari Desert. During the wet season, the Delta is a maze of sparkling lagoons, meandering waterways and overgrown islands teeming with wildlife. Known as the river that never finds the sea, crystal clear channels spread over the thirst lands of the Kalahari with their papyrus-fringed banks and fertile floating islands. During the drier seasons, the lagoons and waterways recede but the region still offers an exceptional wildlife experience. The elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga roam the landscape, while lion, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog share the floodplains with large herds of elephant and buffalo. Hippo inhabit the deeper channels and lagoons, while honey badgers can be seen in broad daylight. OKAVANGO DELTA MOREMI GAME RESERVE The only proclaimed wildlife reserve in the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve (and its spectacular Khwai area) is also widely regarded as the most beautiful. Moremi Game Reserve has the most diverse habitat and animal populations in Botswana. The reserve contains about a quarter of the Okavango Delta and stretches across several thousand square kilometres, comprising a stunning landscape of forests, lagoons, floodplains and islands. Game viewing is excellent year-round and resident species include lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, African wild dog, zebra, red lechwe and many more. MOREMI GAME RESERVE CHOBE Botswana s famous Chobe National Park is a must-see wildlife destination that includes the Savute Channel and natural beauty of the Linyanti River. Chobe covers almost km² (6 836 square miles), was the country s first national park and boasts the biggest concentration of wildlife in Africa. Famous for its large concentration of elephant and buffalo, which congregate along the Chobe River, Chobe National Park offers adventures such as game drives, private river cruises, excellent birdwatching and exceptional photographic opportunities. CHOBE LINYANTI AND SURROUNDS The Linyanti Wildlife Management Area is a hidden gem, tucked away in the northeastern corner of Chobe National Park. The Selinda Spillway links Linyanti to the Okavango Delta and it is renowned as one of the best game viewing areas in the region, supporting a great diversity of wildlife, with large herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra. Due to its remoteness, the Linyanti is a gorgeous, unspoiled region of waterways and lagoons, riverine forests, huge trees and palm tree islands. Game viewing is superlative in both the wet and dry season, and the birding is exceptional. LINYANTI AREA 41

47 LEGENDARY LANDSCAPES SAVUTE Savute, a remote and wild corner of Chobe National Park, stretches from the park s northern boundaries to the Linyanti River. The area s main feature is the mysterious Savute Channel, which flows and dries up seemingly unrelated to the rainfall. Dry and arid for almost 30 years, animals in the area were sustained by artificial waterholes. With the Savute Channel flowing again in recent years, the region has undergone a startling transformation, reverting to its natural lush and marshy state. Large numbers of wildlife have been attracted to this rejuvenated wilderness haven. SAVUTE MAKGADIKGADI PANS The Makgadikgadi Pans span km² (9 942 square miles) and are the largest salt pans in the world. Remnants of an ancient lake, the pans are interspersed with sandy desert and occasional vegetation. One of Africa s biggest zebra populations makes this vista of white sand and salt their home. When rains fall during the wet season, the pans are filled with water and attract large flocks of flamingos, as well as big herds of zebra, springbok and wildebeest, followed closely by predators, making for fantastic game viewing. MAKGADIKGADI PANS CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE The magnificent expanse of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a not-to-be-missed attraction when embarking on a Botswana safari. This is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa, offering almost exclusive wildlife sightings. After the wet season, the reserve becomes a hive of activity for large herds of plains game such as springbok and gemsbok. Visitors will also be treated to wonderful sightings of wildebeest, hartebeest, eland, giraffe, cheetah and the legendary black-maned lion. During the dryer months, the Central Kalahari reveals wide, desolate pans, which offer exceptional photographic opportunities. The reserve is well-known for providing awe-inspiring star gazing experiences as well as for its most notable attractions such as Deception Valley, the Sunday and Leopard Pans, Passage Valley and Piper s Pan. CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE NXAI PAN Nxai Pan National Park is set on the northern fringe of the Makgadikgadi basin and includes Nxai Pan, an ancient lake bed that was once part of the vast Lake Makgadikgadi. At roughly square kilometres this incredible destination offers stark contrasts between its dry and wet seasons. In the rainy season, it is home to the seasonal Zebra Migration, where vast herds (accompanied by a slew of predators) can be seen on open grasslands, amidst the mottled shade of acacia trees. During the dry season, visitors to the Nxai Pan National Park will be treated to sightings of wildebeest, springbok, impala, gemsbok, hartebeest, giraffe, lion, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, bat-eared fox, and occasionally elephant and buffalo. 57 LEGENDARY LANDSCAPES VICTORIA FALLS A World Heritage Site, Victoria Falls is one of the world s greatest natural spectacles and the stuff of legends, romance and myth. Established in 1905 as the country s key European settlement, it enjoyed the excellent facilities synonymous with high society the town still boasts the elegant Edwardian architecture of this era. Today, Livingstone acts as Zambia s adventure gateway, as it is conveniently situated near the mighty Zambezi River and the breathtaking Victoria Falls. LIVINGSTONE SOUTH LUANGWA Renowned as one of Africa s greatest wildlife sanctuaries, South Luangwa is home to an abundance of game, which frequents the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons. The Luangwa River is the most intact river system in Africa and is the life blood of the park s square kilometres (3 500 square miles). South Luangwa is also the birthplace of the walking safari one of the best ways to get up-close-and-personal with the park s pristine wilderness, which boasts 60 animal species and over 400 bird species. While out on the plains, visitors can view large herds of elephant, some up to 70 strong, and encounter the mighty buffalo. LOWER ZAMBEZI The spectacular Lower Zambezi National Park spans square kilometres (1 580 square miles) of pristine wilderness. It is situated adjacent to Zimbabwe s Mana Pools Reserve, creating a giant expanse of protected wilderness, and boasts breathtaking vistas of the Zambezi River, as well as lush riverine surrounds. It is not uncommon to see enormous herds of elephant along the riverbanks, as well as leopard, buffalo and lion. The park offers a wonderful collection of habitats, which are home to a superb diversity of animals. Unlike the Luangwa, the Zambezi is navigable year-round, so most camps offer a full variety of water activities alongside their standard walking and driving options. KAFUE Established in 1950, Kafue is Zambia s oldest national park. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in the world, spanning square kilometres (8 650 square miles) of spectacular African wilderness. Spread over such a vast area, the Kafue National Park offers visitors excellent game viewing, birdwatching and fishing adventures. The beautiful Busanga Plains, in the north, stretch as far as the eye can see and are one of Zambia s most significant wetland resources. Fertile dambos situated in the south are fed by the Lunga, Lufupa and Kafue Rivers prime locations for viewing some of the 400 species of birds found in the park. SOUTH LUANGWA LOWER ZAMBEZI KAFUE LIUWA PLAINS Regarded as a game reserve from as early as the 19th century, by the Lozi people who were charged with looking after its wildlife by their Litunga (king), Liuwa Plains National Park, was officially recognised by the government in Its remoteness, in Zambia s far west reaches, ensures a wonderfully pristine wildlife experience where vast herds of wildebeest, wild dog and lion inhabit the region s golden plains. The park is also home to a plethora of bird species making for ideal off-the-beaten-track birdwatching excursions. There is a local Lozi legend that tells of a Litunga, who planted his walking stick on the plains, and it grew into a large mutata tree. This tree can still be seen in the national park. 87 SAFARI, CITIES & COASTLINES MASAI MARA Situated southwest of Kenya, covering an area of square kilometres, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife, and endless plains. The quintessential Masai Mara safari delivers many attractions and is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game as well as the two million animals that make up the Great Migration. The Masai Mara National Reserve was named for the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and for the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve. It shares a border with Tanzania s Serengeti National Park and is essentially a continuation of this park, forming the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. In addition to the abundant wildlife in the reserve, no Masai Mara safari would be complete without a cultural experience with the Maasai people. MASAI MARA AMBOSELI, CHYULU AND TSAVO S A scenic park in its own right, Amboseli is synonymous with two particular things - majestic herds of elephant and glorious views of Kilimanjaro. Kenya s second most popular wildlife area, after the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli was declared a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve in The rugged wilderness of the Tsavo West National Park is famous for its incredible Mzima Springs and Shetani lava flows. Tucked in between these two fantastic destinations is the Chyulu Hills National Park, which boasts striking and diverse landscapes as well as some of the best views of Kilimanjaro. The skyline, with towering skyscrapers and imposing architecture also draws the attention of every arrival to the city. 91 NORTHERN KENYA SAMBURU With its palm groves and dense forests the Samburu National Park offers pristine wilderness and breathtaking surrounds, boasting exceptional game viewing in remote splendour. The best feature of Samburu is not the wildlife or the picturesque surroundings, but the fact that it is one of the lesser-visited regions in Kenya. The peaceful atmosphere and the authentic wilderness experience set it apart from the better-known wildlife reserves in the country. Situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ngíro River, there is plentiful wildlife and the bird watching is especially good. The rest of the reserve is fairly hot and semi-arid, making for easy game viewing. SAMBURU MERU Made famous by conservationist Joy Adamson and the film based on her book Born Free, Meru National Park is arid with Doum palms and baobab trees dotting its landscape, but its 13 rivers and bubbling springs allow for thriving riverine habitats. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, as several rare bird species are found here. A small but highly diverse park, Meru has the feeling of a far larger wilderness especially since the chances of seeing another game drive vehicle during your safari is incredibly remote, as the reserve is home to only one fully operational lodge. Meru National Park incorporates a 44 square kilometre (17 square mile) rhino sanctuary, which is home to both white and black rhino. MERU LAIKIPIA AND SURROUNDS Lying on the edge of the Northern Frontier, the Laikipia Plateau stretches from the slopes of snow-capped Mount Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley. Laikipia boasts one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa and is one of the last strongholds of the endangered black rhino. Despite its scattered mosaic of farms and cattle ranches, it is essentially still a wildlife refuge supporting huge numbers of game. Vast open plains in the shadow of a snow-capped silhouette create a tranquil and secluded setting, where game drives encounter abundant wildlife with not another vehicle in sight. LAIKIPIA AND SURROUNDS RIFT VALLEY AND SURROUNDS The Great Rift Valley is another prized Kenyan attraction, boasting beautiful lakes and escarpments, which provide havens for plentiful wildlife. The region is a birdwatcher s paradise as it attracts a number of species to its sparkling lakeshores most notably huge flocks of flamingos that happily wade near hippos and other game species. Three exceptional bodies of water; Lake Naivasha (the highest of the Rift Valley lakes), Lake Nakuru (renowned for its pelican colony) and Lake Elementaita, are the most wellknown. Travellers visiting the region will be treated to exceptional sightings of leopard, white rhino, Rothschild s giraffe and an assortment of plains game. RIFT VALLEY AND SURROUNDS 91

101 NORTHERN SAFARI TARANGIRE One of the lesser-known game reserves in Tanzania, Tarangire rivals the Serengeti in the great number and diversity of its wildlife. It is a good choice for travellers who wish to encounter more animals (particularly elephants as it s renowned for frequent sightings) and less tourists while on safari. The Tarangire National Park is also known as a wonderful birding destination. During the dry season, the Tarangire River is the only source of water in the area, which offers excellent sightings as it attracts the reserve s abundant wildlife. The landscape is a photographer s dream too, due to the high number of scenic baobab trees and its extensive marshlands that turn swathes of the reserve a brilliant green. TARANGIRE SERENGETI The Serengeti National Park, meaning endless plains in the Maasai language, is undoubtedly one of the world s most celebrated wilderness areas and is an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers. It is Tanzania s oldest game reserve, and renowned as the site of the annual Great Migration, when over two million animals mostly wildebeest migrate to Kenya s Masai Mara National Reserve. This epic, seasonal journey is a deeply moving experience and a wonderful photographic subject. Visitors to the park can roam its sprawling plains on exhilarating game drives or hop into a hot-air balloon for a once-in-a-lifetime wilderness adventure. NGORONGORO CRATER The Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, once a gigantic volcano, is the largest intact caldera in the world. Some maintain that before it erupted, it would have been higher than Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Today, long since having collapsed and eroded, it is an extensive highland area with the famous 600 metre deep Ngorongoro Crater as its focal point. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth. Endangered black rhino are protected within its rim, giant tusked elephants wander the forests, black-maned lions stalk the grasslands, and flamingos crowd the soda lakes. LAKE MANYARA Lake Manyara National Park offers a wilderness experience in diverse habitats, from its Rift Valley soda lake to dense woodlands and steep mountainsides. Here, the Great Rift Valley is at its most impressive, with the escarpment dropping some 500 metres down to the lakeshore. Apart from a spectacular setting, the park is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and huge flocks of pink-hued flamingos. The shores of the lake attract more than 400 species of birds, many of them waterfowl or migrants. Large herds of buffalo, cheetah, giraffe and impala roam the lake shores and the forested valley slopes. ARUSHA Situated beneath the towering peaks of Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro, Arusha is renowned as the safari capital of northern Tanzania. This vibrant metropolis is home to numerous markets offering an array of Tanzanian souvenirs, as well as various enchanting retreats that ensure a comfortable stay. Arusha is the ideal stop-over destination before embarking on a safari or attempting to scale Kilimanjaro. 111 UGANDA & RWANDA Tucked between the wildlife-rich habitats of Kenya and Tanzania, the great ape territories of Uganda and Rwanda offer wildlife enthusiasts unparalleled and unique encounters. Both countries share the responsibility of conserving a population of the world s critically endangered mountain gorillas and other rare primates. Whilst both countries share the impenetrable forests of the volcanic Virunga Mountain Range, which make for exceptionally scenic (all be it slightly rigorous) gorilla treks; Uganda s landscape differs slightly. It is home to the remote national parks of Kidepo and the breathtakingly beautiful Murchison Falls that play host to big game species. Rwanda is synonymous for providing unrivalled primate viewing. Aside from gorillas, its habitats are also home to the enchanting Sykes and golden monkeys as well as the chimpanzee.

115 GORILLA TREKKING KIGALI (Rwanda) Rwanda s capital city, Kigali is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable gorilla trek. It is home to the country s only international airport. Major attractions for Kigali include the Genocide Memorial Centre, the fruit market, lunch at the Hotel Mille Collines (of Hotel Rwanda fame) and a ride on a motorbike taxi through town. The city was founded in 1907 under German colonial rule, but did not become the capital until Rwandan independence in Today it is a thriving city of approximately 2 million people. KIGALI (Rwanda) VOLCANOES (Rwanda) Also known as the Parc National des Volcans, the spectacular Volcanoes National Park is situated in the far northwest corner of Rwanda. It protects the steep forested slopes of the magnificent Virunga Mountain Range. Home to the rare mountain gorilla, the Virunga volcanoes span Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Parc National des Volcans being the Rwandese element of this ecosystem. The lush slopes of these volcanoes provide a dramatic natural setting for one of the most thrilling and memorable wildlife experiences seeing the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (Rwanda) ENTEBBE (Uganda) The bustling city of Entebbe sits on the Lake Victoria Peninsula, just 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Uganda s capital city of Kampala. It is here that the gateway airport of Uganda, Entebbe International, welcomes visitors seeking the thrills and attractions of the country s prized landscapes, and where light aircraft and scheduled flights link to Uganda s major parks. Meaning seat or chair in the local Luganda language, Entebbe was once the seat of the colonial governor in the early 1900s. Today, the city holds prominence as the location for the State House and the Ugandan president s office and residence. ENTEBBE (Uganda) BWINDI IMPENETRABLE (Uganda) An ancient rain forest, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest extends over a series of steep ridges in the Virunga Mountain Range. Its impenetrable nature, which is due to the dense growth of herbs, vines and shrubs that cover the valley floors, makes it the ideal habitat for the mountain gorilla. Declared a World Heritage Site due to its ecological uniqueness and natural beauty, the forest is home to roughly half of the world s total gorilla population. With terrain that varies from swamp and bamboo forest to dense thicket, this beautiful area poses both challenges and rewards for anyone interested in an intimate glimpse of the life of these fascinating primates.
