1 VITA PETER U. C. DIEKE Ph.D. University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom Associate Professor Profile Dr. Peter U. C. Dieke, an Associate Professor of Tourism and Events Management at George Mason University, received his BA from the University of Nigeria in 1975, MS from the University of Massachusetts in 1981 and PhD from the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom in He has written extensively on the developmental aspects of tourism in less developed countries, focusing on policy, planning and implementation issues, including regional interests in sub-saharan Africa. Dr. Dieke is the Africa regional editor for Tourism Review International and also serves on the Editorial Boards of many other scholarly tourism journals, e.g. Annals of Tourism Research. His teaching specialties include sustainable tourism, tourism planning and policy, tourism in less developed countries, global understanding of tourism, tourism economics, ecotourism, and resort development. He has also advised governments and undertaken assignments for several international organizations, including United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO); United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); the African Union (previously Organization of African Unity - OAU); the British Council; the Foundation for Democracy in Africa; NEPAD (The New Partnership for Africa s Development); ATLAS Africa (Association for Tourism and Leisure Education).
