5 THE CHOBE RIVER This scenic and important waterway, only 50 miles from Victoria Falls, forms the northern boundary of Chobe National Park. It passes through the game-rich Four Corners region where Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe all meet, home to nearly 500 species of birds and the largest concentration of elephants in Africa. Legendary explorer David Livingstone visited here in the 1850s, as have countless safari-goers ever since. Today, the river is a rich haven for wildlife, particularly during the dry season from April through October, when the water farther inland is scarce. However, animal viewing is great year-round. There is much to see along the reed-lined banks of the Chobe lions, jackals, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, baboons, kudu and impalas. And surely few travel experiences can compare to personally witnessing a herd of elephants drinking at the water s edge, or the turbulent froth that arises as hundreds of buffalo plunge across the river, or the sight of a hippo, its massive jaws stretching wide in a contented yawn. If you re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Puku Antelope the Chobe River is the only part of Botswana where this extremely rare animal can be seen. VICTORIA FALLS Justifiably recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is truly wondrous and breathtaking, a marvel of Mother Nature that must be seen in person to fully appreciate. This massive cataract creates a mighty roar as it plummets 338 feet into the gorge below, kicking up a heavy mist visible from 40 miles away. The sound is so tremendous that the African name for the falls is Mosi-oa-Tunya literally, the smoke that thunders. British explorer David Livingstone, the first European to set eyes on the falls in 1855, was so awe-struck by the spectacular sight that he named them in honor of his queen. The falls are a mile wide, spanning the entire breadth of the Zambezi River. In Livingstone s words, on sights as beautiful as this, angels in their flight must have gazed. 8 Zambezi Queen The Zambezi Queen is an environmentally responsible eco-ship. Instead of a conventional propeller system, it uses a water jet propulsion system that causes no damage to the river bed. Only the latest fuel-efficient and low-emission generators are used during daylight hours; at night, the ship operates on battery power. Hot water is provided by a solar heating system, energy-saving lights are installed throughout the vessel, and sinks and showers have water-saving features. Also of note the ship boasts an onboard state-of-the-art water purification plant, rendering it clean, clear, and perfectly suitable for showers and tap water (the plunge pool, too). South Africa is a popular destination year-round and there really isn t one best time to visit the country, even though seasons are opposite the Northern Hemisphere. Game viewing in the Chobe is most popular during the dry season (April-October), but Victoria Falls is at its peak flow during March and April and later in November. These subtle differences will not change your overall experience on this trip of a lifetime. WHAT MAKES IT SO UNIQUE? South Africa is often referred to as the whole world in one country, and this itinerary is a perfect introduction to its favorite city, amazing wildlife and natural wonders. For those with limited time, this is the ultimate itinerary to scratch off three destinations on most traveler s bucket list. RIVERS & RAILS OF AFRICA WHEN TO GO? The best months are March to July; September to October the months are the dry, winter season when massive herds of elephants arrive at the shores of the Chobe River. 16 The Safari Destinations SOUTHERN AFRICA is sure to ignite your sense of adventure. Two of the greatest safari destinations in the world are here: Chobe National Park and Kruger National Park. Make sure to have your camera in-hand as you safari through these natural, untamed lands majestic animals just might gather together and put on a show for you and your group. No matter which of our itineraries you choose from, you will enjoy a safari in Chobe National Park. On our Stars of South Africa itinerary, you ll also visit the Manyeleti Game Reserve in the Kruger National Park area. CHOBE NATIONAL PARK All Itineraries The Chobe region of Botswana is home to an abundance of game. Around the Chobe National Park, visitors will find the largest population of elephants on the African continent. On the Chobe riverfront, known as the Serondela area, lush floodplains and forest areas offer the perfect habitat for many diverse species. Due to the large number of trees and bush life, birding is also popular in this area, especially during boat safaris. In addition to the vast amount of elephants and birds, the Chobe is also home to buffalo, hippo, giraffe, kudu and impala. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK AREA (MANYELETI GAME RESERVE) Stars of South Africa The Manyeleti Private Game Reserve is a 23,000 hectare (57,000 acre) sanctuary in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The remote reserve shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park, the Timbavati Reserve and the Sabi Sand Reserve and falls into the South Central region of the Greater Kruger Park biosphere. With only eight safari vehicles traversing the reserve, it is one of the lowest vehicle density private reserves in the Greater Kruger National Park area. The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant) are found here, as well as cheetah, hyena, wild dog, leopard and black-backed jackal. 15

17 TANZANIA is home to four of the African continent s most renowned national parks, each one alive with a wild world of its own. TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Golden Trails of East Africa As the sixth largest national park in Africa, Tarangire supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife outside the Serengeti. The park harbors important populations of oryx and lesser kudu, and contains the largest population of elephants in Northern Tanzania. LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK Golden Trails of East Africa This unusually diverse park and its alkaline lake attract vast populations of water birds and a wide range of animals. Located in the shadow of the Great Rift Valley, the park is particularly known for its tree climbing lions, which may be seen perched on a sturdy branch. NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA Golden Trails of East Africa This vast protected area contains the Ngorongoro Crater, often called Africa s Eden and the 8th Wonder of the World. Formed when the cone of a volcano collapsed into itself millions of years ago, the 100 sq. mile crater is now home to wildebeest, lion, zebra and black rhino. We are able to accept a traveler s choice of preferred air carrier, flight schedule, and some deviations so long as the requests are made at the time of booking the airline reservation. To hold/confirm an airline reservation, the airlines require your full legal name as it appears on your passport. For contract airline fares a deposit of $350 per person (economy class tickets) or $600 per person (business/first-class tickets) is required to secure the flight schedule and quoted price. Published airfare prices require full payment at the time of reservation. Once the airfare deposit or full payment is received your airline tickets will be issued and any changes will be subject to penalty if not cancelled within 24 hours of ticketing. Should the name on your airline reservation not match your passport exactly, your airline reservation will have to be cancelled, full penalties will be assessed and your reservation will have to be recreated subject to market pricing at the time of the new reservation. Air tickets are economy class, unless otherwise requested and additional charge for upgrade is paid, and are issued pursuant to the terms and conditions of the relevant airline(s). Airlines require your name to appear on your airline ticket exactly as it appears on your passport. Please note our airfare prices use special contract fares that may not allow you to receive credit on your frequent flier account nor may they allow you to use miles to upgrade to a higher class. Baggage: Please check with the airline regarding their baggage allowance. Most airlines limit checked bags to either one or two pieces per person, and limit carry-on baggage to one piece per person, and weight and size restrictions apply. There are strict luggage restrictions for our programs in Africa; please ask for details. Airport Transfers: Guests purchasing transoceanic airfare through us may qualify for complimentary group airport transfers on a scheduled arrival between the airport and the ship or hotel, and on a scheduled departure between the hotel or the ship and airport. Airport transfers included in your airfare package will be reflected on your travel confirmation and on your travel documents. If airport transfers are not reflected on your confirmation, AmaWaterways is not responsible for providing airport transfer service to you. 39 GENERAL PROVISIONS Cruise and Cruise & Land Itineraries: Carrier seeks to provide services as published or stated in the final documents. But deviations to planned cruise, cruise & land itinerary or any other aspects of the travel may occur. If conditions make cruise routes unsafe for navigation or in other respects, or raise sufficient doubt about safety, Carrier reserves the right to modify or provide alternate services. These may include, but are not limited to, providing accommodation on the docked ship and/or substituting ground arrangements. An effort will be made to try to arrange elements of the cruise and cruise tour similar to those originally planned, but the level of similarity may vary. Except as otherwise provided in your Passenger Ticket Contract, such changes will not entitle you to any credit or a refund. Cruise, cruise & land routes, and all other aspects of the cruise and travel are subject to change with or without notice. Hotel Accommodations: We will seek to use hotels listed (if any) on your confirmation. Changes may be necessary, therefore use of such hotels is not assured. An effort will be made to substitute similar hotels, but the level of similarity may vary. Standard policy for hotels is to have rooms available for check-in no earlier than 3:00 p.m. Subject to the discretion of the hotel, triple-occupancy hotel accommodations may involve the use of hotel rooms with just two beds. Only those guests who have elected to take our Cruise & Land program on the brochure itinerary dates will receive transfers between the hotel(s) and the ship. Cancellation: Carrier reserves the right to cancel, change or postpone any cruise departure date and itinerary. In the event of a complete cancellation of a departure by Carrier, we will refund monies paid for the cruise or cruise & land package to those participants who have not previously cancelled. Personal Changes: Except as otherwise provided in your Passenger Ticket Contract, deviation from the published itinerary for any reason will not entitle participant to any reduction in charge. Participant will bear a full charge for any unused services. Child Policy: All guests under the age of 18 are to be in a cabin with an adult, and must remain supervised at all times, and their safety is the responsibility of the accompanying adult(s). Children between the ages of 4-10 at the time of embarkation may share a cabin with 2 adults provided the child is able to share the bed with the adults no additional bed will be provided. Please be aware that balcony cabins of any kind may be unsafe for small children if left unsupervised. Children 4-7 years old are not recommended on any program and on our Africa program, due to safety precautions, there is a minimum age limit of 12 years old, unless otherwise agreed upon by AmaWaterways. AmaWaterways does not provide child-specific programs or child-minding facilities. Disabled Participants: Handicapped facilities are not available on board or in many places visited on the cruises and cruise tours we offer. If you (participant) have a disability and reasonable accommodation may enable you to use the services, please let us know how you believe we can help. Participant must inform us in writing, at or immediately after making the reservation, but in any event as early as possible, of any mobility impairment or other condition, whether physical, emotional or mental, which may require accommodation or use of an assistive device during the travel. A reasonable effort will be made to accommodate special needs, but we are not responsible for denial of service by carriers, hotels, or other independent suppliers. A participant, who, due to impairment, is not self-sufficient, may be required to travel with a companion who shall take responsibility for assistance needed during travel and in case of emergency. Inoculations and Medical Preparation: All passengers traveling on certain Africa itineraries will require Yellow Fever vaccination. AmaWaterways strongly recommends that all passengers take malaria pills for travel to Africa. Smoking: Smoking is only permitted on the ship s Sun Deck in the designated smoking area. Diet: Special dietary requests must be provided to us at time of reservation.
