1 Explore the Culture Vulture Route! Nelson Mandela Bay s rich cultural heritage guarantees history lovers a unique insight into the Eastern Cape s and the Municipality s diverse and remarkable past. The nomadic San were the earliest group of indigenous people known to live in the Eastern Cape. The Khoi displaced the San into the mountains and semi-desert, early in the second millennium AD. The forefathers of the Xhosa speaking people arrived on the banks of the Kei River in about 800 AD. While on his epic voyage of discovery searching for a sea route to the East, the Portuguese, Bartolomeu Dias, rounded the Cabo da Roca in February 1488 and entered Baia da Roca Cape and Bay of the Rock (now Cape Recife and Algoa Bay). Dias also gave the name Ilheus Chaos (Flat Islands) to the Bird Islands. In 1497, Vasco da Gama, successor to Dias, entered Algoa Bay and noted the Bird Islands on his voyage to India. His charts gave Cape Recife it s name Cabo do Arricife Cape of the Reef. The Bay was later named Baia de Lagoa, by navigator and cartographer Manuel de Mesquita Perestrelo in 1576, which referred to the lagoon situated at the mouth of the Baakens River. By the middle of the 18th century, the number of ships passing the Bay had increased and occasionally survivors of the shipwrecks were given hospitality by Dutch Trekboers (farmers) who had trekked from the Cape in search of good farmland. At the end of 1799 the English, fearing that the French would render military assistance to the Graaff-Reinet rebels, decided to construct Fort Frederick, overlooking the mouth of the Baakens River as a permanent military post British settlers arrived by sea in 1820, to become the first permanent British residents in the Albany District. On 6 June 1820, Sir Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony at the time, named the new sea port in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth. Before the up-country gold and diamond booms, PE developed as one of the major commercial cities in SA, trading in wool, mohair and ostrich feathers. As a result, the harbour became a bustling port. People traveled to the city in search of trade and labour opportunities. Early Port Elizabeth was characterized by the settlement of European, Cape Malay and immigrant communities. The diverse community lived together according to economic and social status, rather than on an ethnic basis. Some folk were already residing in New Brighton since However, when the Group Areas Act was legislated in 1960, this resulted in forced relocation under the apartheid law among the non-white population and the so-called townships came into being. Another must to include on the family itinerary is a visit to the AutoPavilion in Uitenhage. This high-tech interactive expo and heritage centre takes one on a full-throttle journey from concept to classic, laser to legend, with the cars that defined the past and inspire the future. ALIVE WITH ENTERTAINMENT The usual commercial entertainment and activities are also available, one of which is The Magic Company - the pioneer of family entertainment centres in South Africa, which operates the amusement park at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World. A Go-Kart racetrack, Putt-Putt Mini-Golf Adventure Course, fairground rides and bumper boats offer hours of entertainment for children and parents alike. Furthermore, a dynamite package of children s and family entertainment is offered from the Boardwalk s Amphitheatre on a regular basis. Cinema lovers have some fine air-conditioned venues from which to choose in Nelson Mandela Bay. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE The great outdoors provides one of the most wonderful playgrounds for children to learn more about nature and the natural environment. Nelson Mandela Bay is situated in nature-lovers paradise, offering wonderful African bush adventures for the young, and young at heart. Within the city limits of Nelson Mandela Bay itself, an unbeatable variety of walks and hiking trails are available. The surrounding area supports the most diverse array of vegetation types in South Africa as five of the country s seven terrestrial biomes (bio geographic areas) are represented in the Eastern Cape. From special kiddies programs available at a selection of private game reserves which include mini-game drives, educational nature walks where children learn more about the animals and plants in the area, spoor tracking to animal touch farms, the focus is on learning, adventure and having fun. Not forgetting Bayworld s very own Snake Park as well as their educational seal and penguin presentations at the Oceanarium or the reptile demonstrations at the Boma Reptile World. A holiday to Nelson Mandela Bay would not be complete without experiencing a journey aboard the famous historic Apple Express narrow-gauge steam train which operates from Port Elizabeth to Thornhill Village or Loerie on a regular basis. One of the stops is the Van Stadens River Bridge, where children may disembark and photograph the oncoming train as it slowly steams over the highest narrow-gauge bridge in the world. A miniature version of the train can be viewed on the first Sunday of each month when the Port Elizabeth Model Locomotive Society offers miniature train excursions at Stella Londt Drive in Fernglen for the young at heart. Another unusual family fun activity is to experience a Haunted Walk - it is alleged that Port Elizabeth has an over-abundance of ghosts lurking in Central Hill, the city s oldest suburb and historical heartland. Join a Ghostly Group Tour led by well-known historian Rose Trehaevan, who will take groups on a haunted night walk though the old city and tell stories of ghosts. The ghosts of Port Elizabeth are of all kinds, some are heard but not seen, some are seen but not heard and manifest themselves as apparitions. MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES Other family outdoor activities available for the adventurous and adrenalin junkies include sandboarding, horse riding, canoeing and quad biking. Beautiful scenic drives and excursions into the heart of Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas are exciting self-drive options available for the intrepid family adventurer. Some of which include an explorative journey along the beautiful rugged coast along the western seaboard of Nelson Mandela Bay; a journey through the evergreen world of citrus trees along the Sundays River Valley; a visit to the famous Addo Elephant National Park - home of the BIG 7 (Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Rhinoceros, Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark); or a visit to the rural villages of Colchester and Canonville and an excursion aboard the Sundays River Ferry. So, we warmly welcome all kids and families come and experience all that Nelson Mandela Bay has to offer. We urge kids and their parents to use the Kiddies Carousel Route as their passport to guaranteed enjoyment and memorable holiday experiences!
