Roger purchased much of Cal-Wood s 1,200 acres of forests and meadows along with neighboring Balarat in The rest he acquired from the neighboring homesteaders, the Cruthers. Roger and Oral lived here because they loved the area s natural wonders, beauty, and dry, clean air. Mr. Larry Wood was his legal advisor and college friend. When Roger died in 1974, he left the land to kids to learn about, appreciate, and take care of. The name Cal-Wood comes from these two people s names. Cal-Wood is a GIFT, and it will be your home for the next couple of days. Please treat the land, natural residents, and facilities with the respect they deserve so that Cal-Wood will be around for many years for students like you to explore! 3A. 5 Animal Tracks (not scaled to size) A B C D E Food.Energy.Water. Food Conservation! In one year, the average American consumes 200 pounds of meat, 31 pounds of cheese, 16 pounds of fish, and 415 fruits and vegetables.! But there s a catch! Not all of that food is necessarily eaten by us. Much of it gets thrown away because we tend to buy or take more than we are going to eat, so it goes bad or we throw it away. Here s how you can reduce your food waste: F G H I J When going out to eat, try to order only what you know you will be able to finish. If you do have leftovers, take them home in a recyclable or compostable container (not styrofoam) to eat the next day. You can also be creative and use leftovers in new recipes! K L M N A. A lot of times we buy new food that we don t need, when it is just as easy to create a meal plan from the food that we still have at home. COMPOST!!! You can collect food scraps in a compost bin (which may include decomposers such as worms) that will result in a usable product. The end product of compost can be used in your own garden to help supply important nutrients to your plants.

7 Be your own naturalist! A naturalist is someone who studies and appreciates nature. A naturalist is curious about the world around them. A naturalist recognizes patterns in nature. A naturalist has keen senses. A naturalist is patient. Use the space below to make sketches and notes of things you notice in nature that fascinate you! Food.Energy.Water. Energy Conservation On average, each person in the United States uses about 312 million Btu (or British thermal units) of energy. What the heck is a British thermal unit?! One Btu is actually a very small amount of energy, about the equivalent of burning one match. Here s how you can save energy at home: Ask your parents if you use appliances in your home (like washers/dryers, microwaves, and refrigerators) that have the Energy Star logo. These appliances automatically use less energy than other appliances. Open your curtains or blinds when there is plenty of natural light available to avoid turning lights on in your house when you don t need them. It s not what you look at that matters, but what you see. - Henry David Thoreau
8 Food.Energy.Water. Water Conservation Extra Room to Draw 70% of Earth s surface is covered in water - BUT, only 3% is freshwater, and only 1% is freshwater that is available for us to use.!! This means that if you were to put all of the world s water in a 1 liter bottle (about the size of your Nalgene bottle), we would only be able to use about one drop of it! A person in the U.S. uses gallons of water a day! At Cal-Wood, we get our water from 2 wells on our property, so we have to be very careful about how much water we use. If we use more than 3,000 gallons in one day, it takes 24 hrs for the tanks to refill completely so that we can use water again. So, with only 30 people at Cal-Wood (and there are usually more) using an average amount of 100 gallons per day, we would use up our water very quickly. That is why it s better for us not to take showers during our stay at Cal-Wood. Here s how you can use less water at home: To reduce the amount of water used to flush your toilet, place a glass jar in the back of the toilet to displace some of the water. Take shorter showers! You can save up to 40 gallons of water just by taking a 3-5 minute shower instead of a 10 minute shower. Set a timer to help you monitor how long your showers are.
