1 FIJI ISLANDS ATTRACTIONS 1. Kalevu Cultural Centre Do you want to learn all about the Culture, History and Traditions of the Fijian People, then the Kalevu Cultural Centre is well worth a visit and will be one of the most interesting and informative experiences you ll have during your stay in Fiji. Situated on the Coral Coast 10 minutes from Sigatoka town The Kalevu Cultural Centre is hidden away within the four and a half acre grounds of Gecko s Resort. The Centre provides a glimpse into the way of life in a traditional Fijian village which has been created to be as authentic as possible. The hour long tour takes you through the traditional Bures where you can learn all about the Fijian History, Culture and Traditions including Pottery and Tapa Cloth demonstrations. There are two ways to experience the Cultural Centre: One Hour Tour - You can participate in an hours long guided tour with one of our knowledgeable Local Fijian Guides Lapani or Samu, they will walk you through the authentic Village providing you with all the information on Fijian History, Culture and Traditions and provide the answers to all your questions. Upon request you can participate in a Kava Ceremony. The tour is both fun and informative and is recommended to all age groups. Half Day Tour - Group bookings of fifteen people or more are welcome and on arrival would be greeted by Traditional Warriors before participating in the one hour long tour as above. A Fijian Lovo Buffet Lunch would then be served which is a form of Fijian cooking involving a hole in the ground with fire wood and coconut husk as the heat source and rocks as the heat material. Meat, fish and vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and then placed on top of the heated stones and cooked for about two and a half hours. Cool Tropical Fruits are then served for dessert. The event will then proceed with a spectacular traditional Meke presented by the local villages which includes dances from the Islands of the South Pacific concluding with the spectacular Samoan Fire Dance. Booking in advance is recommended so as not to be disappointed.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is managed by the National Trust of Fiji. The Park is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Its Visitor Information Centre is manned by local rangers, who provide an informative introduction to the Park's status and how to traverse its walking tracks. Visitors can take the 1 hour walk or the 2 hour walk to explore this unique ecosystem or seek a guided tour from the local rangers onsite. Both walks provide visitors an opportunity to experience first-hand the key attributes that make the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, a well-known national heritage. We recommend the 2 hr walk for a full on 'Dunal experience'. Two popular Park activities include a visit to the old archaeological sites to see ancient lapita artefacts and bird watching in the Park's pockets of Native Dry Forests. The Park also runs a Going Native program which sees visitors helping local rangers and local community volunteers replant native trees. The Park is a popular destination for many international student groups wanting to experience Fijian culture, history and wilderness. A significant number of Hindus residing in this country celebrate the festival with traditional good will and rituals. Such is the euphoria over Diwali celebrations in Fiji that even the non-hindu population participate in fun and celebrations related to the festival of Diwali. The excitement for Diwali Festival in Fiji is heightened further due to the fact that Diwali is celebrated as the public holiday in Fiji. Just as in India, people of Fiji celebrate Diwali with elaborate lighting and candle decorations. Taking advantage of the beautiful festival people reaffirm the bonds of love shared with loved ones by exchanging greetings, sweets and gifts of love. Besides, Diwali gives an opportunity to people of different faith and communities to come together and live in a spirit of communal harmony. In Fiji, several schools also organize Diwali celebrations to let children understand the social, cultural and religious significance of Diwali Festival. In several schools Diwali celebrations are marked by organizing singing, essay writing, quiz, rangoli making and Diwali Greeting Card designing competitions besides hosting talks in Hindi, English and Fijian languages. Traditional Diwali Lakshami Pooja is also organized in several schools. Such activities go a long way in enhancing the social and cultural development of the community in Fiji's multiracial, multi lingual and multi-cultural society.
