CAMPING Explore the Yukon Territory by canoe with experienced wilderness guides Spotting wildlife along the riverbanks such as bears, moose and Bald Eagles Camp in the wilderness on the banks of the mighty Yukon River Observe pristine forests, lakes and mountain scenery from the comfort of your canoe TRIP OVERVIEW The Yukon is a vast pristine wilderness of forests, lakes and mountains located in Canada s extreme northwest. The centre of the province consists of rolling, forested hills crossed by gushing rivers; while in the south-western corner is Kluane National Park containing Canada s highest peaks. To the north, forest gives way to Arctic tundra. There is no better way to explore the vast wilderness of the Yukon, than by canoeing down the famous Yukon River. The Yukon found acclaim in 1896 during the gold rush boom when the population of Dawson City reached 30,000, as hordes of prospectors toiled over the Chilcoot or White passes and sailed down the Yukon River to the Klondike. Few people made a fortune and the rush was all but over by 1904, although it did help put the Yukon Territory on the map. At the time the boom was ending, many people settled in the Yukon and Whitehorse was among the places chosen. The tour starts in Whitehorse on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north. The expedition travels over 320 km on this mighty river, exploring several abandoned settlements such as Hootalinqua and Big Salmon Village and many relicts of the historic gold rush of Camps are set up on the gravel and sand banks along the mighty river where one can enjoy a refreshing bath in the Yukon. Black Bear are commonly spotted in the Yukon Valley, along the ridges of the cliffs and river edges. Moose are numerous in the forested foothills and bald eagles nest along the river banks. Beavers are busy getting their winter supplies in, and several times Grizzly Bears can be spotted strolling along the shoreline. Around the camp fire, you will hear interesting stories about the first river travellers. At the Yukon River bridge in Carmacks, you will part from your canoes and travel with our van via the Klondike Highway, back towards Whitehorse. IS THIS TOUR FOR ME? Journey deep into the Canadian wilderness on an unforgettable voyage along the Yukon River. This canoe trip follows an historic gold rush route, exploring the pristine lakes, forests and mountains of this remote land far from the tourist trail. This unique expedition style canoeing adventure is perfect for the active traveller and lets you escape the crowds, camping by the riverside under star-filled skies, investigating long-forgotten gold claims and watching for Black Bears and moose along the river bank.

2 ITINERARY AND DETAILS Day 1: Whitehorse Your tour begins in the Yukon Territory city of Whitehorse. Surrounded by pristine lakes, mountains and the Yukon River, there s no surprise Whitehorse is known as the Wilderness City. With a vibrant urban lifestyle, this Yukon city offers the best of both worlds to anyone who ventures this far. A welcome meeting will be held at 18:00 hrs where you ll meet your guides and fellow travelers. Your guide will run through your equipment with you and you ll have a chance to pick up any missing items. This evening is free to explore as you wish. Optional Activities: Fishing permit (must book this on day one) CAD$50 Accommodation: Hotel included Meals: Paid locally Day 2-8: Yukon River Canoe Tour The Yukon was firmly placed on the map after the discovery of gold on August 16th, 1896 which sparked a migration of over 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in Northwestern Canada between 1896 and When news of the Klondike Gold Rush, also called the Yukon Gold Rush, reached Seattle and San Francisco it sparked a massive influx of potential prospectors. The journey proved tough with only about 40,000 arriving. Naturally some made claims and became wealthy however, the clear majority left empty handed and many died. The Klondike Gold Rush ended in 1899 after gold was discovered in Nome (Alaska), prompting an exodus from the Klondike. With the prospectors long departed, you ll escape into the Yukon wilderness without the herds. The stunning scenery and tough environment will help paint a picture of what prospectors went through upon arriving to seek their fortune. Your canoe trip starts with a transfer to the legendary Yukon River - meaning `Great River. The river travels more than 3,000km from its source south of Whitehorse, to the Bering Sea. During the next seven wonderful days, you ll paddle over 300km on this great river to roam the Yukon wilderness. Your first day of paddling brings you to Lake Laberge which requires some shoreline paddling. The reward is some wonderful paddling along the 30 mile section of the river, a narrow, winding stretch that provides incredible scenery, excellent fishing (optional permits purchased prior to departure) and brings you to some interesting historical sites, including the old trading post of Hootalinqua and RNWMP outpost. As you travel through the wilderness, you ll reach the confluences of the Teslin and Big Salmon River where wildlife, including Black Bear and moose are often spotted along the shorelines. Accommodation: Basic camping Meals: Breakfast (x5), lunch (x6), dinner (x6) included Day 8: Carmacks After a week in the Yukon wilderness with very few signs of people and civilisation, you arrive at the small native village of Carmacks, which was founded by Klondike Goldrush co-discoverer, George Carmack. Here you can enjoy the luxury of eating a meal lovingly prepared for your group, before saying goodbye to the canoes which have been your catalyst for this incredible exploration. You return to Whitehorse by road, a journey of just under three hours where upon arrival this magnificent journey comes to an end. You will arrive back into Whitehorse any time between 15:00 and 16:00. Meals: Breakfast included Important: Although you will canoe over 320 kilometres, previous experience or special skills are not essential and each canoe holds two people. Beginners are welcome and will receive a full demonstration and briefing by the qualified canoe instructors, plus tips on how to manage the canoe. A reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most out of the trip, and the ability to swim is a prerequisite. Most of the trip is spent in complete isolation in the vast wilderness that is the Yukon, so expect to get involved with camping tasks. The wilderness guide will manage all the meals and do almost all of the cooking, but it is common and generally enjoyable for the group to get involved in some way. INCLUSIONS Services of a professional wilderness guide Transportation in a private vehicle and canoe Six nights camping and one hotel night on a twin share basis (sleeping bag and roll mat are not included) All meals included whilst canoeing Seven days canoeing on the Yukon River Enjoy guided nature walks Endless wildlife spotting opportunities Explore the town of Whitehorse WE PROVIDE Tent Marmot or MSR, self-supporting dome tent - comfortable for two people with some remaining floor space for clothing etc. (single occupancy is possible and must be booked in advance). PHYSICAL RATING/PREPARATION This active tour is suitable for people of most levels of experience and fitness. Active tours are about exploring the places you visit so whether it s walking, or kayaking you ll be experiencing the best from each place. Given the nature of this tour, if you suffer from medical issues you should advise us prior to booking. A background in camping and paddling is an asset but not necessary. Due to the nature of travel, this information can change and should therefore be taken as an indication only and not as a contractual obligation on the part of Grand American Adventures. If you have any questions, please contact us. Please ensure that you download an up-to-date copy of this dossier before you depart to ensure you have the most up-to-date information. Our itineraries are occasionally amended in response to customer feedback or for operational reasons. This dossier is valid for all tours departing in Itineraries may be subject to change with the publication of our 2019/20 brochure in Autumn 2017, at which point revised 2019 dossiers will be made available. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK A week after the trip I am still digesting it all. Discovery no. 1 is that Canadian people are the most friendly in the world. No. 2 the Yukon is the most beautiful part of the world and the only way to see it is from the river. It really does calm your soul. Andrea Tattersall, UK

FLIGHT ARRANGEMENTS For anyone leaving from the UK we would be pleased to book your flight in conjunction with your tour. Please contact us for competitive prices on flights departing from most UK airports. If you are booking your own flights, you are free to arrive at any time on day one but it is advisable that you arrive in plenty of time to reach your joining hotel and attend your welcome meeting. We also suggest that you book your return flight the day after your tour finishes. If you do have to return home on the day your tour finishes, please make sure that your flight does not depart before 18:00 hrs. Please note that we cannot be held responsible for any delays, cancellations, changes to your flights, or any missed flights. We are unable to delay a tour, or finish a tour early due to your flight times. TRAVEL INSURANCE It is a condition of joining this tour that you must be insured against medical and personal accident risks to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue service. You will be asked to provide details of your insurance policy, including insurer, policy number and phone number before embarking on the trip. We offer an insurance policy that is designed specifically to cover the potential risks on our tours - particularly the many optional activities offered. If you do not take our policy, you must ensure that the policy you do take offers an equivalent level of protection and covers you for the activities involved - be aware that some policies do not include, or restrict, coverage for this type of travel. There may be cheaper policies available, but this does not mean it may be better value - we strongly advise you check fully what will and won t be covered. Any claims concerning matters for which you are insured must be directed to your insurers. Please note: We can only offer cover for passengers residing wihin the European Union. PASSPORT AND VISAS It is important that you apply for your Canadian entry eta while in your home country. For specific visa information, please consult the relevant embassies. Please note it is your responsibility to ensure you have valid passport and the correct visas for your tour. VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADA The Canadian Government has introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eta), for some international travellers flying into Canada. Citizens from countries other than the US who do not require a visa to enter Canada will be required to obtain an eta before entering the country. Eligible travellers will need to go online to apply for their eta. To apply for your eta you will need your passport, credit or debit card and an address. At the time of publication there is a CAD$7 fee to process your eta. Your eta will be valid for a period of five years, or until your passport expires. We recommend you carry a print out of your eta approval when you travel. Please visit to apply. If you have not applied for and received authorisation via an eta prior to travel you may be denied boarding, experience a delayed processing or be denied admission at the Canadian point of entry. However, neither possession of a visa nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visafree on the eta, guarantees admission to Canada. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the point of entry. Please note: If you are arriving into Canada overland you do not need to apply for an eta. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS If you have any medical conditions, take prescribed medicines, or have a condition that will affect your participation in the tour, you must inform Grand American Adventures or your travel agent at the time of booking. Please be aware we may require a doctor s note prior to travel for some conditions. This information is essential in case of emergency. All of our vehicles carry a basic first-aid kit however, our leaders are not legally allowed to administer medicine. For everyday use you should bring your own medical supplies, such as pain relievers, antibiotic cream and upset stomach relievers, in addition to sunscreen and insect repellent. WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR TOUR SPENDING MONEY For those meals that are not provided you should allow about CAD$100-$150. PRE-PAID CURRENCY CARDS Whilst you do not need much money for this trip with the exception of day one, breakfast on day two and tips for the guide, it is advisable to carry a certain amount of cash just in case. It s personal preference as to how you take your money and it s recommended to take some cash with you to be prepared when you arrive, but Grand American Adventures is pleased to endorse FairFX prepaid currency cards. Please ask one of our sales consultants or click on the link grandamericanadventures to find out how to receive a FREE currency card, worth a retail value of TIPPING It can be embarrassing if you re confronted by a local who is expecting a tip and you are not aware of how much to offer. For this reason we have listed guideline prices below. This is standard practice in the service industry in Canada; allow 15-17% to be added to the bill in restaurants. It is customary in Canada, to show appreciation of your guide by giving a gratuity at the end of tour; around CAD$5-$10 each per guide per day is reasonable.

4 LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE Consider using the maximum allowable carry-on baggage space to ensure you have essentials such as hiking boots, medication, toothbrush, underwear and any other hard-to-replace items as there is usually no time to locate lost luggage before departure. City clothes and valuables may be left at our rendezvous location however, but for peace of mind we recommend that you leave all but essential valuables behind. It is important regardless if Grand American Adventures are booking your flight, that you consult your airline for maximum luggage allowance. SLEEPING BAGS We recommend a sleeping bag with synthetic fill rated to 0ºC or 32ºF. If you tend to be a person who sleeps cool, you may wish to consider a bag that is rated an additional 5ºC cooler. An older bag loses its loft with time and may be five deg less effective. A Therm-a-Rest mat or a light air mattress underneath works best, as the ground may be rough. Closed cell foam or ensolite work but they are not as comfortable and are not recommended. You must bring your own sleeping mat and pillow if you cant live without one. TEMPERATURE CHART HIGH / LOW TEMPERATURES IN CELSIUS (ºC) JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC Whitehorse HIGH LOW Yukon River HIGH LOW Dawson City HIGH LOW C / F Conversions: -10ºC = 14ºF 0ºC = 32ºF 10ºC = 50ºF 20ºC = 68ºF 30ºC = 86ºF 40ºC = 104ºF PACKING TIPS CLOTHING It is advised that you take a practical selection of clothes for both warm and cool climates to suit the season. Please see the temperature guide showing the highs and lows that can be expected in key locations that your tour visits. However, please remember that this is just a guide and you may encounter a wide variety of temperatures en route due to altitude and unforeseen weather conditions - so it s best to be prepared! Besides your essential clothing, here s a checklist of other items you should take: Kit-bag or backpack Sleeping bag (three to four season) Sleeping mat (for example Therm-a-rest ) Good quality waterproof/windproof rain gear (Gortex jacket, trousers) Warm hat Warm jacket or fleece Shorts and long trousers (quick dry) Trainers (camp wear) Neoprene boot/ wellington boots (to wear in the canoe on cold/wet days) Sport sandals (for wear in canoe on warm days) Sweater (fleece or wool) Socks (several pairs of wool) Thermal underwear T-shirts (made from quick-dry cloth) Travel towel Sunglasses Sunscreen Lipsalve with SPF Waterproof gloves (e.g. neoprene) Daypack with plastic liner or large dry bag (capable of holding rain gear, camera etc. for day use) Long-sleeved shirt/blouse Water bottle A good supply of wetwipes Personal medication Insect repellent Five heavy duty bin bags It is advisable to limit the amount of cotton clothing you bring. Optional items: Penknife Bug shirt Head net (to protect against mosquitoes) Camera Binoculars Ear-plugs may be useful if you are a light sleeper Head-torch Anti-bacterial gel for washing hands Fishing rod and equipment (a license can be obtained in Whitehorse) Reading material. Please try to travel as light as possible as you will be carrying your gear in your own canoe (the heavier the load, the slower the canoe!) A large waterproof bag will be provided for you to put your personal stuff in. It may be useful to bring some bin liners and/or large plastic carrier bags to pack items into within the waterproof bag. Please note airlines have various rules on what can be carried in your luggage - if in doubt check with your airline before travelling. FOOTWEAR River travel means wet feet. A standard pair of knee-high rubber boots (sometimes referred to as wellingtons) are recommended (minimum 10 high) for canoe trips. Wear these with a felt insole (we are referring to the footstep shape insole, not the type that completely line the boot up to the rim because the later will take days to dry if wet) and a combination of polypropylene and wool/pile socks and your feet should stay comfortably warm. Carry a spare set of insoles and socks, and in the case you overstep your boots, they can be used to replace the wet ones.

5 You can print off the PDF vouchers or download to your smartphone. For those without access your vouchers will be posted. Please make sure that these vouchers are correct. JOINING POINT You will need to make your own way to the joining hotel for your tour. Please find the details below: If you make your insoles out of closed cell (ensolite) foam, they will not absorb water and will dry very quickly should they get wet. For the canoe trips, we suggest you buy a snug fitting pair of neoprene (wet-suit material) booties available at canoe or scuba diving supply shops. Most have integral soles. If you get a pair without soles, you may wear them inside tennis shoes. The height should be mid-calf, not ankle height. Don t be fooled by the surfing shoes made of quick-drying material rather than neoprene. They do not provide the necessary warmth. If you are on a white water canoe trip, you should already know about specs for booties and just remember that the water is cool. Sport sandals have become popular. While okay for rugged individuals, remember that the water is cold, especially in the far north and that sand is abrasive to your feet, especially after a few days of wearing sandals. For hiking and camp wear, bring light hiking boots. Be sure they are broken in before the trip to minimize chances of blisters. Important criteria includes: ankle support and sufficient height to keep out bits of debris. CLOTHES WASHING Once you leave Whitehorse you will be away from washing facilities. You are able to wash your clothes in the river but please bring biodegradable products only. Remember, unless you bring quick dry clothes it is unlikely any of your clothes will have the time to dry. BATTERY CHARGING Many of our travellers bring mobile phones, music devices and cameras that require frequent battery charging during a tour. Once you re on the river, there are no charging facilities so if you are an avid photographer then spare batteries are advisable. When you are staying in a hotel, your room will have an electrical outlet (just remember your international adaptor!). JOINING YOUR TOUR TOUR AND ACCOMMODATION VOUCHERS A tour voucher will be ed to you once your balance has been paid in full. Vouchers for any hotel nights you have booked before or after your tour as well as any additional day tours will also be sent to you. Days Inn Whitehorse 2288 Second Avenue Whitehorse Yukon Y1A 1C8 Canada Tel: Transfer: Approx five minutes drive from the airport, located in convenient walking distance to main street Whitehorse. There is a free shuttle service available during daytime from the airport to the hotel. It is advisable to ask the driver if he is dropping off at the Days Inn Whitehorse. If you are going to take a taxi to the hotel then the cost will be approximately CA$15. ARRIVAL COMPLICATIONS Sometimes the unexpected can happen; your plane may be delayed or you may even miss it! If you have missed your tour departure, first check with the hotel to see if your wilderness guide has left you a message. 6 JOINING YOUR TOUR TRANSPORT The canoes we use are large two-person open canoes (i.e. without spraydeck). Each canoe carries a share of the communal camping gear (food, tents, kitchen equipment etc) plus your own personal gear. If there are an odd number of people in the group, the wilderness guide will paddle alone. On the longest days you can expect to be canoeing around five-six hours (with breaks). Most of the roads are paved when travelling at the beginning and end of your tour. ACCOMMODATION This tour includes one hotel night with en suite (twin share), six nights participatory camping in two-person tents. While canoeing down the Yukon, you will camp each evening somewhere on the banks or on an island. Even though there are particular sites which canoeists tend to use, generally there are no facilities. The exact places that we stop at will depend on river and weather conditions plus the ability of the group. Single Accommodation: Single rooms in the hotel and tent can be requested, but we cannot guarantee that they will be available; single rooms must be booked and paid for in advance. Please let us know as early as you can if you would like a single room. BEAR PROOFING As you are travelling through an area with the possibility of bears, your tour leader will give you a safety briefing on how to keep yourself safe and how to avoid close encounters with these four-legged animals. It is very important that you do not take any food into your tent, not even a snack. If after a safety briefing you are concerned about bears, you may purchase bear spray as a precautionary measure from Walmart. Please note this cannot be carried on the plane when you fly home. SECURITY No matter where you find yourself in the world, you need to look after your valuables. Use your best common sense! While in cities, do not leave valuables in the hotel. While on the river, you are unlikely to experience issues. When in doubt consult your wilderness guide. YOUR TOUR GUIDE Your wilderness guide will take care of all the planning and organisation throughout your tour. Your wilderness guide is there to make sure you get the most out of your tour; providing information and answering any questions you may have as well as sorting out any queries or problems you may encounter. If you have any particular interests or things you would like to do on your tour, then please let your guide know at the beginning of the tour and they will do their best to help you. CAMP DUTIES An essential part of a camping tour is helping out with the day to day camp duties and everyone will assist with the setting up and packing up of the campsite. Your wilderness guide will provide guidance on what to do, and typically it will only take 15 minutes to set up or break down the tents and camp kitchen. Before you know it you ll be enjoying home sweet home in the great outdoors. Sharing the camp duties is a great way to bond with your fellow travellers and the group camaraderie is all part of the experience. THE GROUP The maximum group size is 12 passengers. Passengers come from a range of countries worldwide (average of four nationalities per group) and many will be solo travellers. You will find you have many things in common with your fellow travellers, including a passion for discovery and a strong interest in exploring the national parks. Grand American Adventures tours are designed for adults although on this trip children are able to travel with their parents. While most passengers are aged 25-55, every year we get many people both above and below this age range. All travellers over the age of 70 will be requested to complete a self-declaration of fitness form prior to travel. Our tours are a unique holiday experience and much of your enjoyment will come from the team spirit of your group and the fun you ll have together, as well as from the local setting. We cannot stress strongly enough the importance of bringing a positive attitude with you on tour; a sure guarantee to enjoying each and every moment, even in the adversity of the odd rainstorm! Grand American Adventures travellers will join our trusted sister company for this tour. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the NHS has up-to-date advice on staying safe and healthy abroad. For more on security, local laws, plus passport and visa information, see Keep informed of current travel health news by visiting For all latest travel information about your holiday, please visit us at /travelaware The advice can change so check regularly for updates. MEALS Despite remote wilderness locations, you can expect to eat very well. We take special care in preparing nutritious and delicious meals for all of our trips. You will be continually amazed at the variety and quality of the meals. Just because you are in the wilderness, does not mean you have to eat freeze dried and pot stews! Look forward to eating well! We are able to manage some food allergies and dietary restrictions. Please identify these concerns early when you book so that we can work the arrangements into the plans for the season.

7 RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit the places and communities we visit as well as our travellers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect. We have created a Travellers Code of Conduct to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. This code includes following the Leave No Trace ethic; this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the national parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Our tour guides will explain this code of conduct during the first night s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour. Grand American Adventures also host fundraising events throughout the year to raise money in support of BAWT. We are proud supporters of Bay Area Wilderness Training ( a charity based in Oakland California which works to connect disadvantaged children in the local urban area with the great outdoors. Their work helps to provide these young people with life changing experiences which they can apply to everyday life. Everyone booking with Grand American Adventures has the option to donate 1/$1/ 1 to support this well-deserved charity and we will match this donation. Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity providers. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit. Responsible Tourism on the Yukon Canoe Expedition... Tourism can be a real help to local communities, providing income, positive cultural exchanges and a financial incentive to protect their natural environment. Ours is a total approach to responsible tourism, covering everything from the way we plan and operate our trips to the practices of Grand American Adventures as a company. The majority of this tour is conducted through man power and adds minimum carbon footprint to the area we travel through. Our guides will instruct the group on how to act to avoid disrupting the flora and fauna plus wildlife of the area. We take our rubbish with us back to civilisation. AFTER YOUR TOUR FEEDBACK AND REVIEWS We want to hear about your experience and stories from the road, so please feel free to us any comments, feedback or reviews whilst you are on tour or when you return home to: comments@grandamericanadventures.com We value your feedback and tour reviews, which help us in developing and improving our programme. It s input and suggestions from travellers like you that has helped make Grand American Adventures what it is today. WE WANT YOUR PHOTOS! We can always use your holiday snaps and short videos to better depict and promote all the fascinating places we visit.
