Q1) 50Comments: Weareresidentsofmorethanthirtyyearsanditwouldbeselfishtosayitshould only be for us but development needs to be managed carefully in terms of resources and maintenance of the quality of life and character of the AireysS FairhavenSEasternViewcommunity. Alldevelopmentsneedtobesensitivetothenaturalbeautyofthecoastalarea. Large commercial developments are not appropriate, i.e. large residential properties. Vitaltomaintaintheruralcharacterwithmostlyunsealedroads,swaledrainsand noenlargementofshoppingareas. Itlookstomelikeitmusthavereachedcapacity. Development that is sympathetic to the natural environment and does not extendtheboundaryofthetownisacceptablebutmustbehandledverycarefully. 1

Aireysspecialcharacterneedstobepreserved. Idon'twanttoseeanythingthatobstructsoraffectsthenaturalbeautyofthe area. Sustainableonly. Driving that section before the official Great Ocean Road starts should not be developed. Ithinkthereshouldbeanamenitysomewherealongtheforeshore. Anythingfair. Any further development would need to meet the planning guidelines, be environmentally sensitive and allow the area to retain it's natural beauty and charm. BettercarparkingatFairhavensurfclub&abilitytocrossGreatOceanroadwith greatersafety. IwouldprefernonebutIthinkchangeisinevitable. I would not like to see any major developments in the Aireys Inlet area but appreciatethatwithanincreaseinthegeneralpopulationitisinevitablethatmore peoplewillwanttovisitandliveinthearea. This question is not very helpfuls it depends whether the development is of a highstandardorapoorstandard. Iwouldhateittoloseit'slaidbackfeel. Possiblysaferroadcrossingareas,particularlyduringsummerperiod. Bettershopsi.e.freshgreengrocers,delietc. Thelandscapeisalreadycrowded.Alsotraffic,parking,beachaccessdifficultwith theexistingpopulationpressure.escapetothebeachincaseiffirewillbealready be really difficult in cars when it happens, without the pressure of further residents. Infilloncurrentvacantblocksandnodoubtsomeolderandsecondratehouses will be demolished to make way for hopefully better buildings which retain a beachyfeel,butneverthelessqualityarchitecture. I am concerned that many developments are covering much of the available spaceontheblock. Thisquestionistoovaguetoanswerusefully.Iticked,minor,butreallydon't knowwhatyouareasking.whatdoyoumeanbydevelopment?doyoumean(a) morehouses,(b)morewalkingtracksandbikepaths,orperhaps(c)moremultis dwellingunits. This question is too vague, development can mean many things from more pathwaystoalargehotel. Onlydevelopmentsympathetictotheneighbourhoodcharacterofthearea. Whyshouldtherebedevelopmentfordevelopment'ssake??Preserveourland forfuturegenerations. MaintainthelowSkeycoastalcharacter. Welikethevillageatmosphere,naturalbeautyandpeacefulness. AireysInlettoEasternViewisauniquearea.Torquay,AngleseaandLornehave alreadybeensignificantlydeveloped.someareasonthecoastshouldbeleftalone asapointofdifference.wechosetoliveinaireysinletbecausewewantedaquiet andpeacefulplaceandtobeawayfromallthedevelopmentandcrowdsofother coastalareas. Improvementstotrafficcontrolandwalkingtracksbutnomajorcommercialor residential subdivision development allowed and no subdividing of presently designatedruralblocks. AnyfurtherdevelopmentmustnotbeattheexpenseofthereasonswhyAireysis highly valued now, that is, its informal village feel, two small and concentrated shoppingareas,andanunbuiltrivervalley. Developmentshouldonlybeallowedifitdoesnotimpactontheinfrastructure andenvironmentofthedistrict. Onlyessentialreplacementandupgradeworks.Don'tchangetheNatureand Ambienceofthearea. 3

4 Q2) 38Comments: The area seems to be well known presently and I would be concerned that developingtheareaanyfurtherfortouristswouldpotentiallyleadtolargefacilities and/orresorts. Thereareampletouristsnowtokeeptheexistingbusinessesveryhappy. The main problem with tourism is the extra traffic that is generated. We only havethegreatoceanroadwhichisfairlybusyasitis.ialsosupportkeepingthe Painkalacvalleywhichisfloodprone,farmlandandnotresidential. It'sbusyenough. TheGreatOceanRoadisalreadyamajordrawcardwithoutspecificfocusonour area. IfIselect onlylowkey,wouldthatmeanbuildingoncurrentfarmland?with the current downsgrading of building standards as per Melbourne, with the key wordsuglydense?imustvotenotatall.sorry.theplaceisasliceofheaven,and don tchangeitplease. Theshirepromotestourismanddoesnothingtocaterforthem.Retoilets,bins, trafficmanagementetc. Iputlowkeytobefairbutforthosewholoveitabsolutelynotatall.Whynot haveaquieterspotonthecoast.blairgowrieisthespotontheothercoast. Financeforinfrastructureisrequired. Youcan'tstopalldevelopment.Howeverwhatisallowedshouldbelowkey& sympathetic. Thereareplacesthatarebetterfortourism.Aireyshasthelighthouse(limited busaccess,parkingetc.);fairhavenhasthesurfclub(forlocals)andeasternview hasthebeach.thegreatoceanroadsignisamanageabletourismpointbutifit increasedanyfurtheritwouldhaveseriousimplicationsforthegreatoceanroad access; management of tourism population in event of a fire (since blocking the GreatOceanRoadisarealproblemforeveryoneontheothersideofthesign)and therearebetterplacesdedicatedtotourism(thegreatotwaynationalpark;the 4

5 TwelveApostlesetc.).AireysSEasternView,becauseoftheiraccessviatheGreat OceanRoad,ontheotherhand,donothavelargecarparksorspaceforthemnear thesitesofattraction. Ithinkitdependsonyourdefinitionofstrongly,i.e.Isupportstrongpromotionof whatwehaveandfurthergrowthofsimilartypeoftourism,e.g.holidayhomes, B&Bs, the lighthouse and beaches, etc. However, I do not support large scale tourismdevelopment,suchasresortsorthemeparks. BeingontheGreatOceanRoadmeansthatitisfoundreallyenough. TourismisakeyfactortofundingthemaintenanceofAireysandEasternView, thereforeshouldbemanagedinawaysoasnottohavenegativeeffectsonthe environment. Aireys Inlet lies between two much larger towns. It doesn't seem wise or desirableorenvironmentallysustainabletoturnaireysinletintoanother'tourist town'. Carparkingisalreadyinadequateevenforresidents.Withoutcouncilbuyingland forparkingnearthetopandbottomshopsfurtherdevelopmentisproblematic. Onlyverylowkeyandsmallbusinesses. Touristdevelopmentcanbeofmanykinds,intrusiveorlowkeySagainthisisnot ahelpfulquestion. AngleseaissuburbanandLorneshouldbethetouristdestinationonthispartof TheGreatOceanRoad. Weweretemptedtosay'lowkey'butitisaworryhowthatphraseisviewedSit's toorelativeaterm. Fullypackedalready. Ourappealisaboutthepristineenvironment,lowerlevelsofdevelopmentand theuncrowdedbeaches.thereservedbushlandalongthegreatoceanroadmust bemaintainedatallcosts. Any tourist development will reduce the amenity of the area and damage the natural environment. Same with the tourists who come to stay and have no appreciationorconnectionwiththenaturalenvironment. Theareahaslimitedspacee.g.parkingfacilities. Activities for families and young children during autumn, winter and spring holidays. I would support the idea that Aireys Inlet to Eastern View is promoted as a `walkingdestination'scoast,forestandhinterlandwithvaryingdegreesofdifficulty forfamiliestoseriousbushwalkersalongunmadepaths. Thereisalreadysignificanttouristvisitation.Idonotthinkweneedtoplanfor more.forexamplethepressureonthelighthouseprecinctwouldnotwanttobe increased. Ireallylikeimprovementstothelighthouselookoutandcanseethebenefitsfor locals and tourists and would like to support shops and cafes to cater for more tourists if that is their wish. However I would add that it is Airey's small village atmospherethatissoattractiveandiwouldlikethatmaintained. Thecurrentleveloftourismisaboutright.Itisbusyoverthesummerholiday period and on some weekends and the current facilities are adequate for these numbers. Promotion should be adequate to maintain the status quo in summer andtoincreasetourismslightlythroughouttherestoftheyear. Again,apoorquestion.Whatoyoumeanbypromoted?Whatkindoftourist development? Notmore,butbetter.Mosttouristsjustpassthrough. 5

6 Tourism that provides opportunities for appreciation and enjoyment of the naturalenvironment. TourismwillgrowasaresultoforganicgrowthinMelbourneandtheGeelongS Torquayregion. Thereiscurrentlysufficienttourismalready,Thereareaispopularalreadyand thesecretisout. Wefeelthatmoretouristdevelopmentwillchangethewholelandscapeandfeel ofthearea. Touristarewellawareandalreadytheflowismorethancanbecopedwithin peakseason.theonlypromotionshouldbefortourismoutsidethesummerand Easterperiodsasthiswouldbalancethingsthroughtheyearforbotresidentsand thecommercialoperatorsinaireysinlet. Aireyscanbepromotedwellasadestinationforwonderfulbushwalksandriding holidays(variousforms). 6

7 Q3) 22Comments: Unlessbasicallymaintainedasis,theplacewillbedestroyed.Eventhepresent SurfCoastCouncilcontrolsallowdegradationanddespoilationtooccur. Developerswouldcompromisethebushsettingandwouldmostlikelywantto developmoderatehighriseetc. Thecurrentbalancebetweenconservationandtheprovisionofmodernservices to residents is about right. Sensible precautions need to be taken for fire prevention. IthinkthatconservationisnecessarytosustainthenaturalbeautyofAirey's. Definitely! Easy.Thisquestionisclear. Thisareaisamainattractionbecauseofitsunspoilednaturalbeauty. TheattractionofFairhavenisit'snaturalenvironmentandserenityandthoseare it'sadvantages. Yes,that'swhywelivehereSit'sawayfrombigCityenvironment,stress,hypeetc andinsteadit'srelaxingandenvoyoratingtoliveinsuchabeautifulenvironment. Inevitably,somechangeswillbeneeded,especiallythoserelatedtobetterfire management. However, the emphasis should be on preservation of beauty and serenity. Theareisbeingspoiltbywankersbringingthecitytothecoast.Banthemfrom plantingweedsthatareintheshire senvironmentalweedsbooklet. InappropriateandoverdevelopmentofLorneoverthelasttenyearshasmeant thatithaslostallit'soldcharacter. ItdependsontheareasSthisisaleadingquestion.Whowouldn'twantnatural beautyandserenityconserved? Thesmall,peacefullocalityandnaturalenvironmentarethemajorassettothe AireysInletareaandmustberetained. Asmuchaspractical sigh. 7

It is very important that at least some areas of the state remain relatively undeveloped.toomuchdevelopmentwoulddestroythecharacterofthisareaand thereasonthatpeoplechoosetoliveinandvisitthearea. ItisthenaturalbeautyandserenitythatmakeAireysInletsuchabeautifuland uniqueplace. Goliveinthecityifyouwishtoliveinthattypeofenvironment. Butnotgoingoverboardwithregulations keepbushfiresinmind. Ifwelosethesereneandbeautifulambiancetheareaisnolongerattractive. 9 Q4) 18Comments: HighSrise or oversresidential development would kill the thing that everyone (includingtourists)loveaboutthearea. Residentialareasmustnotbeallowedtocreepintoforestedorbushareasand thepainkalacvalleymustneverbedeveloped. If we lose the serene and beautiful ambiance the area is no longer attractive. Keepitasmuchaspossibleasasmallvillage. Butpermitinfill.Someblocksarequitelargeandshouldmakeiteasytopermit additionaldevelopmentwithinexistingsites. Absolutely.Keepthedevelopersout.Theycanmaketheirmoneyelsewhere. TheNomoreafterusresponsedoesseemselfish. Fireisamajorlimitingfactorofresidentialdevelopment.Thecloseproximityto the National Park and the fact that the only major entrance and exit makes residentsveryvulnerabletoabigfireevent.limitingthepopulationnumberisthe mostcosteffectiveandlowenvironmentalimpactwaytomanagethisthreat. Residential areas should be carefully located in order to conserve places of naturalvalue. Absolutely. The only alternative is to go into bushland / forest. We've gone far enough already.fireriskisamajorissue. The Fairhaven Aireys Inlet area is already losing much of its charm due to dominatinghousing. Fortheareaofthetownandneighbouringhamlets,thepopulationisclosetothe desirable maximum. Increased population would create demands for unsympatheticdevelopmentssuchassupermarkets. Yes,anymoreareasopenedwouldjusthastenthecoastturningintomoreofa shithole. 9

10 Problems managing bush fire, evacuation along one road, no safer place and limitedwaterandseweragedefinepresentboundaries. Thenumberofbeachhouseshasincreasedsignificantlyoverthepast15years.If further development is planned it should be within the current 'footprint' to preserveexistingnaturalbushlandasitexistsalready. ThewordsthemselvesdefineitSresidentialdevelopmentshouldonlybeinthe definedresidentialareas. Istronglysupportkeepingtherivervalleyfreeofhousingandcertainlyfreeofa sportsground. Additionaldevelopmentrunscountertomaintainingthelocalenvironmentand itsatmosphere. 10

11 Q5) 30Comments: No.withoutyoudefining'limited'Ihavetosayno.Ifyoumeanensuringsufficient toilet/shower facilities and such ok but if you are suggesting supermarkets, absolutelynot.peoplearehappytobringtheirownfooddown,orbuylocally. Forexample,theFoodstoreattheBottomShopswasawelcomebreakonthe monopolyofthegeneralstore.notsurewhyitclosed,butperhapstheowners neededmoreencouragement&support. The occasional business that adds something extra or is required by the community. Thereisprobablyaneedforsomedevelopmentbuthowcantheshirecockitup sobadlywithparking.nodevelopmenttillitsdonewell. Onlytosupportlocalneeds. Noenlargementoftheexistingshoppingareas. The shops under the apartments near the creek will not have tenants again probably. Current shops are empty and existing businesses seem to struggle (short life spans, restricted opening times). It seems unnecessary to think of additional commercialdevelopment,particularlywhenitwouldalterthe'feel'ofthearea. Nosignificantexpansionofareabutimprovementsandsomenewretailwithin theexistingupperandlowershopareascouldbeanimprovement. Residentsshouldhaveasayinwhattheywant. Afoodcoopstylestorewouldbegood. Furthercommercialdevelopmentwillhurtthelittlebusinessesandchangethe specialambienceofaireysinlet. Commercialdevelopmentcanmeanmanythings.Whatdoyoumean? I do not want any more development of either the bottom or top shops. Commercialconcernsstruggleasitisthroughmuchoftheyear. 11

Thetownistoosmallformajorcommercialdevelopment.However,businesses that are in keeping with the priorities and needs of the residents (coastal recreational ventures, nurseries, basic range of shops as per present) should be encouraged. Currentinfrastructureisadequate.Thebestoutcomeforcurrentretailersisto becomebusiersothattheycanoperateprofitablythroughentireyear.anymore commercialdevelopmentdilutesthebusinessavailablewhichisn'tagoodoutcome for small community. Better to have fewer but profitable traders. Commercial development only benefits the developer, when there isn't a pressing need for morecommercialpremises. Improvementstotopshops. SomecommercialdevelopmentcouldimproveontheexistingSwhichinsome areasisnotofhighquality.again,itshouldbecarefullyplannedandlocatedto conservenaturalvalues. ImprovementstobottomshopsatAireysInlet. Car parking is inadequate already. New development needs to be carefully considered,andfloodproneareasshouldbeoutofboundsentirely,astheyshould alwayshavebeen. TherecouldbelimitedcommercialdevelopmentwithintheAireysInlettownship. I would not want to see commercial development along the Great Ocean Road fromfairhaventoeasternview. AsImentioned,thereare(already)commercialdevelopmentsinAngleseaand Lorne. Thereisthepotentialforabusinesstobedevelopedinthebottomshoparea whenthefoodstorewaslocated.otherwiseidonotbelievethatthearearequires anyfurthercommercialdevelopment.lorne,anglesea,torquay,waurnpondsand Geelongarewithineasydistanceforanyothercommercialrequirements. I think there could be further commercial development in the existing zoned areas. The addition of several cafes, pharmacy, hairdresser, real estate agents, galleries,etc.inthelast10yearshasaddedtotheflavourofaireysinlet,without detractingfromitsothervalues.thus,thiscouldcontinuequitehappilyatboththe topandbottomshops.e.g.thebottomshopsusedtobeaneyesore,butisnow attractive and vibrant due to both private (new businesses) and public (car park andlandscaping)investment. Notunderanycircumstances. For the purpose of employment opportunities that are not tourism and seasonallydependent. Very limited. The loss of the hardware store was a pity but we don't need a supermarket. 12

13 Q6) 19Comments: Thisstretchofcoastlineisuniqueandamazing.Itispartoftheheritageofthe state and the nation. It should not be squandered for short term gains which compromisetheintegrityofthemarineandcoastalenvironments. Tooprecioustocompromiseinanyway,andawonderfulexampleforoverseas visitorsandtourists.theydon'tcometoseetheholidayhouses! Peoplecomefromallovertheworldtoenjoythisareaofthecoast.Conserveit please. We discussed this only last week. And those present all agreed this was vital. Totallyconserved.Itswhyitisbeautiful&special.Ourshirehasaverydistorted viewideaofconservation,spendingondumbcrapandnotsavingwhat shere. Residentialareasmustnotbeallowedtocreepintoforestedorbushareasand thepainkalacvalleymustneverbedeveloped. Improvedwalkingtrackswouldbehelpfulconnectingtownsandopeningmore conservationareasuptowalkers. Entirely,asfarasispossible. Onceagain,itdependswhatyoumean.Thenaturalenvironmentonpublicland shouldbe,butitwouldbegoodtochangethelockthemoutmentalityofparks Vic,i.e.don'tfenceandlockpeopleoutwithoutprovidinganalternative,theywill only cut the fence! Any further development would damage the natural beauty and environmentoffairhaven.likebellsbeach,pleaseleavefairhavenaloneanddo notallowanyfurtherdevelopment. AIDA has fought hard for so long, we must continue to fight to retain the wonderfulenvironmentalqualitiesincludingthepainkalacvalley. I'mnotclearaboutwhatthisquestionisaskingbutseemyanswertoQ3. Whileconservationofthenaturalenvironmentisapriority,someareasareno longerintheirnaturalstate.thereneedstobeabalance e.g.vegetablegardens are not part of the natural environment, but are part of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. ThisisAireysuniqueattraction. Yes,theOtwaysNationalParkisaspecialplaceandAireysInletispartofit. ThisiswhyAireysissohighlyvaluedbyresidentsandvisitors. 14

Would be good if 'top shop' at Aireys could match prices at Anglesea supermarket.wepresentlytraveltoangleseaforgeneralfoodshoppingasaireys istoodear. Leaving Aireys Inlet as is is actually the best way to promote its beauty and possibilitiesforfuturewithoutpushingandpromotingbyforceofadvertisingand 'mindlessprogress'... ThephenomenalsuccessofthecafeattheAngleseaPlantNursery(McGann's)is anexampleofthetypeofplacethatlocalsareperhapsseeking relaxed,friendly, good quality food and green ambience. The Aireys General Store is overpriced andisofaveragequality. 15

16 All the above not needed in a small town. Too many food businesses already. Light industrial area... Anglesea. Recreational fully covered by Barbecue/skate park/parkarea.withdinerovertheroaditisaspottostoponthegreatocean Roadforaslowerpace. Wevisitasholidaymakers,toenjoythebeachandcliffwalksinparticular. Alldevelopmentstofurtherenhancethelifestyleofpeopleresidingorholidaying in, or adjacent, to the existing size and character of the area. Increased tourism onlyinsofarasithelpssupportand/ormaintaininfrastructure,servicebusinesses etc.withoutincreasingzonedcommercialareas. People come for the unspoiled beauty of the area. Why spoil it? Don't please spoilit. Wouldsupportadditionaldevelopmentofincreasedpublictransportsystemsto encourage visitors not to be so dependent upon their cars for transport. These couldincludeshuttlebuses,localservicesonspecialdays(fallsfestival;piertopub etc.)andservicestoenablebackpackersandbudgettouristsaccesstothewalks, campsitesandtownsalongtheway. Theexpansionofrecreationalfacilitiesshouldbedeterminedbytheopinionsand needsoflocalpermanentresidents(iamnotone.) Thereisadominanceofresidentialneedsasopposedtolightindustrialneedsin thecommercialzones.e.g.townhousingconflictswithheavymachineryparking. This limits permanent residents business opportunities. How can you run a local businessinacommercialzoneifresidentsrentinginthesamezonegetupsetby lightcommercialactivities?rerecreation,residentsshouldbeencouragedtoshare facilities where they are duplicated in close proximity e.g. ovals in Lorne and Anglesea.Thisfosterscohesionbetweensmallcommunities. Updatingofexistingandnecessaryinfrastructure.
