1 GUIDE TO ADVENTURE smcvt.edu/adventure

2 GREETINGS SAINT MICHAEL S COLLEGE COMMUNITY As always, the Adventure Sports Center is ready to provide students and employees with access to high quality adventure sports programming and state-of-the-sport equipment. The Guide to Adventure is filled with information about our hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry ski and ride trips. Our trained and certified student instructors will guide you on trips all throughout New England and beyond, possibly as far away as California. All are welcome to join our trips, from new outdoor adventurers, to more seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. To make programming even more accessible, we have included a number of Get Started hikes this year, designed to get students into adventure sports by exposing them to a few straightforward, classic Vermont hikes. One of our fundamental goals at the Adventure Sports Center is to make our programming available to all students and employees, no matter their experience level. So, always feel free to stop by our office, located in the ground floor of Alumni North. When you walk into the center, you will be greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable student instructor or student employee who can answer your questions, register you for weekend programming, or activate your Petra Cliffs Climbing Pass. We always enjoy meeting new people and helping them get outdoors. Please don t hesitate to stop by the Adventure Sports Center to peruse a guidebook, have a conversation, and find your next adventure. We look forward to seeing you soon! Cheers, Saint Michael s College Adventure Sports Center Staff OUR INSTRUCTORS Our student and staff Adventure Sports Center Instructors are driven by their enthusiasm and dedication to adventure sports. All of our instructors excel in leadership, decision-making, and coaching, and have significant training, experience, and knowledge in specific outdoor disciplines. On our trips, the instructional staff is focused on creating appropriate environments that maximize learning and promote success, all while keeping you safe and helping you enjoy your adventure. All Adventure Sports Center Instructors complete a yearlong Instructor Training Program which includes certifications in SOLO Wilderness First Aid, SOLO Wilderness First Responder, and CPR. In addition to these accreditations, our instructors are trained, assessed, and have earned certifications through other organizations such as: the American Canoe Association, British Canoeing, International Mountain Bicycling Association, American Mountain Guides Association, American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, SOLO Wilderness Medicine, Leave-No-Trace, and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Our instructors are ready and excited to guide your next adventure! How to become an Instructor 1. Attend the Outdoor Skills Course. See the long-term development section for more details. 2. At the conclusion of the Outdoor Skills Course you may complete an Instructor Training Program (ITP) Application. Instructor selection will occur by Tuesday, October 24th based on skills, instructor feedback and your reflective logbook.* 3. Attend ITP classes in November. 4. Attend early return training in January Successfully complete a probationary semester and participate in continued field and classroom trainings. 6. Successfully complete SOLO Wilderness First Responder (May 2018). * Due to overwhelming interest and limited spots for instructors, this is a competitive program and there will be evaluations and cuts made by a team of instructors and the directors throughout the year. Instructor Benefits Upon successful completion of the Instructor Training Program, you will have opportunities in specific disciplines to gain further certifications, which are subsidized by the school. These certifications often build off each other, allowing instructors to continue developing their skills as adventure sports leaders and guides. Furthermore, instructors have access to state-of-the-sport equipment to train and practice and our highly trained professional Adventure Sports Center directors are willing and able to help them gain more knowledge and skills in their specific disciplines. Many of the certifications and skills learned and honed as an instructor also translate to future adventures, jobs, and careers, even in jobs not involving adventure sports. For example, our instructors gain experience in risk assessment, problemsolving, decision-making, and coaching, while also utilizing leadership, group management, and communication skills.
