Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown. It is easy to get to as it is right off the Taconic. Sign up by sending $10 to Kathie Laug, 33 Vincent Avenue, Stamford, CT ( ). Please indicate which of the following you will bring: appetizer, side dish, salad or dessert so the menu can be balanced. Please include your telephone number. Fee covers cost of the picnic site, main course and beverages. From the Chair Enjoying the summer I hope! Good summer trails are Minnewaska State Park in Ulster County and Taghkanic State Park in Columbia County. They both provide areas for swimming, which feels great after a hot hike. The warm wonderful days of this summer help us work up an appetite for our upcoming picnic in September. The smells of barbeque, butter dripping off an ear of corn, and the cool fresh taste of watermelon make you think about signing up as soon as possible. We have a wonderful spot this year at the Franklin Roosevelt State Park off the Taconic State Parkway. It includes a covered shelter, bathrooms nearby, and plenty of parking ($8.00 fee at the gate / free with Empire Passport). Get your $10 reservation in quickly so we can plan the food. See the PICNIC info above for location to send check. As we move into autumn and the changing of the leaves, be careful of any wet slippery areas. Slippery leaves can be dangerous. The scenery is perfect for photo opportunities so don t forget the camera. We offer many opportunities for easy, moderate, and harder hikes, so join us on the many upcoming adventures. Many of our summer hikes end up with ice cream, so with apple season coming soon, hikes can include apple or pumpkin picking on the way home from the area farms, our winter hikes sometimes end up with soup or chili, and on our spring hikes we are grateful the snow has melted and spring fever sets in. Our hikes are enjoyable and not overcrowded, which makes it comfortable for everyone to have fun. We welcome any newcomers who want to try a variety of activities. We also encourage new members to lead hikes and scout out new areas to hike. The adventures in our club include opportunities to join other chapters around NYS on their activities. Members also get discounts when going to the lodges up in the Adirondacks. Belonging to a club like ours is an honor because our club does a lot for the State of New York. The club fights to keep property preserved, fights to keep invasive species away, fights to keep all your events safe, while you are enjoying each event. So keep coming and encourage new people to join! We welcome all adventurous people. JEAN DOLEN Saturday, December 3 at 5 p.m. We look forward to seeing everyone at the annual Mohican Chapter Holiday Party. It will be held again at the First Congregational Church, 210 Orchard Ridge Road, Chappaqua, The charge for the party is $20 per person which includes appetizers, catered main courses and dessert, and beverages. To keep the cost down, the Club is subsidizing part of the actual expenses. We hiked from the seaside resort of St. Bee's on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea in 13 hiking days. The journey took us through Britain's most beautiful national parks: Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. We walked through stunning Lakeland scenery, classic rural countryside of rolling hills, dry stone walls and pretty villages filled with the most beautiful gardens. The hotels, guest houses and pubs were charming. The weather was as predicted: quite cool, windy and wet at times. A stop in London before and after the trip with family was a bonus. On the first day, within moments of stepping out of the guest house, Jersey Bob tapped me on the shoulder and said hello. What a surprise to see someone from home! Our paths crossed several times over the 2 weeks which was fun as he was hiking with another group. What a small world! Submitted by Lisa Weismiller 2

3 White Mountains in June The last weekend in June provided perfect weather for hiking in the White mountains. Janice Miller, Lisa Weismiller, Sue Perciasepe and Jane Restani tackled Isolation (14.5 miles and blessedly low water for the umpteen river crossings.) The next day they traversed the Carters with 4000 ft plus of climbing, and landed at the Carter Notch hut for the night where they met up with Sophia (age 10 and niece of Sue and Jen) and Jennifer Reidy, who had descended from Carter Dome. The views of the Presidentials were fabulous from the Carters and from the Wildcats, which everyone hiked on the going home day. Janice, Lisa, and Jennifer have all completed the Northeast 115 and are helping Jane, Sue and Sophia bag their peaks. Added note, this weekend is annually a memorial or benefit for deceased or ill ATV enthusiasts; ATVs are permitted to climb the Mt. Washington auto road and autos are banned for a day. More than a thousand vehicles participate and they could be heard climbing the road, from the Carters. It was fun explaining to the AT thru-hikers what was going on. We hikers normally have problems with ATVs that tear up hiking trails, but these folks seem to stick to their own trails and were extremely pleasant. That doesn't mean there was mutual understanding of the diverse pursuits. A lot of head shaking. Submitted by Jane Restani Highest Point in Idaho-The End of a Quest Lisa Weismiller is a hiking machine and to prove it, on August 10, along with her guide, she summited the highest point in Idaho, Borak Peak, at 12,668. Hiking 5550' elevation gain in 3.6 miles--incredibly steep it took her 6 hours up and 4 hours down. A section called "Chicken out ridge required that she be roped up as there were steep drop-offs and narrow ledges. Lisa has been working on doing the highest points in all 50 states and Borak was her 45 th. Her journey has taken her all over the U.S. where she shared many a high point with friends and family. At this point, the last 5 are considered highly difficult and dangerous so 45 may be the magic number. on an amazing adventure and accomplishment! 4 Saturday, May 21 Bashakill Canoe/Kayak Five paddlers joined Jane Smalley at the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area near Wurtsboro off Route 17. We did a one way paddle, putting in at the bridge on Haven Road and paddled downstream on a gentle flowing current about five or six miles. Along the way we saw a great blue heron, two eaglets, and many red winged blackbirds. Coffee, tea, and cranberry orange bread were served, compliments of the leader at the take out. Submitted by Jane Smalley Saturday, June 11 Old Croton Aqueduct/Croton Gorge Trail /Sing Sing Kill Greenway Hikers on the Old Croton Aqueduct trek from the Croton dam to Ossining enjoyed an unexpected bonus - a trip deep into the bowels of one of the weirs, led by a Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct docent. The jaunt happened to coincide with one of the occasional weir open houses hosted by the Friends. The hike concluded at the new Sing Sing Kill Greenway, an ADA compliant concrete walkway which allows visitors to stroll through the Kill s rocky gorge. Submitted by Debbie Farrell Saturday, July 16 The Great Swamp from Green Chimneys Two new ADK paddlers, Elsie Rattenburg and husband Robert Stack joined Jane Smalley and Robyn Stockton to paddle the Great Swamp in Patterson. Both are experienced paddlers. We got as far as a huge beaver dam all the way across the stream and had to turn around making it a short paddle; but as always it is fun to be out on the water.
