The Alps will show us a glacier on Germany s highest peak, the green waters of Lake Koenigsee, with its pilgrimage church in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the home of the Blue Rider Group, who founded German Expressionism. Bavaria is so much more than beer steins and lederhosen (wonderful though they are): the state s sparkling capital of Munich will show us a city transformed over the years. It is a city of glamorous shops, delicious eateries and grand boulevards, as well as a center for architecture and art. There we will discover the world s largest collection of art by the Blue Rider Group, made famous by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, whose former home in the Alpine region will also feature on the trip. Formerly under Bavarian rule, Salzburg will provide the opportunity to marvel at a baroque city, and consider how past events have shaped current geography. As a historian, your faculty lecturer Carlos Eire particularly looks forward to considering the historical landscape: Bavaria s changing borders, the foundation of Austria, King Ludwig s legacy of castles and patronage of composer Richard Wagner, and even Hitler s mountaintop Eagle s Nest tea house. 3 Yale Study Leader Carlos Eire Professor Eire specializes in the history of early modern Europe, the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Reformation, the history of popular piety, and the history of the supernatural, and the history of death. Before joining the Yale faculty in 1996, Professor Eire taught at St. John s University in Minnesota and the University of Virginia, and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton for two years. He is the author of War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship From Erasmus to Calvin (1986); From Madrid to Purgatory: The Art and Craft of Dying in Sixteenth Century Spain (1995); A Very Brief History of Eternity (2010); and co-author of Jews, Christians, Muslims: An Introduction to Monotheistic Religions (1997). He has also ventured into the twentieth century and the Cuban Revolution in the memoir Waiting for Snow in Havana (2003), which won the National Book Award in Nonfiction in the United States (2003) and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. His latest memoir, Learning to Die in Miami (2010), explores the exile experience. A past president of the Society for Reformation Research, Carlos Eire is currently researching attitudes toward miracles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His latest book Reformations: The Early Modern World (2016) won the R.R.Hawkins Prize for Best Book of the Year from the American Publishers Association, as well as the award for Best Book in the Humanities. All of his books are banned in Cuba, where he has been proclaimed an enemy of the state a distinction he regards as the highest of all honors. 4 ITINERARY MAY 11-20, 2018 WELCOME PHONE CALL Wednesday, May 2 (tentative) Join the group at 1pm Eastern Time for a pre-trip welcome call with the professor to learn more about the trip and ask questions. DEPART FOR MUNICH Friday, May 11 Depart from the U.S.A. on an overnight flight to Munich airport (MUC). ARRIVE IN MUNICH/ GARMISCH Saturday, May 12 Arrive in Munich to connect with the group to travel up into the mountains to the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which composer Richard Strauss once called home. Settle into the charming mountain comfort of the Hotel Zugspitze before toasting the Alps at a welcome reception. Afterwards, join us for a leisurely guided walking tour of the center of town and enjoy welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D) GARMISCH/ NEUSCHWANSTEIN/ LINDERHOF Sunday, May 13 Visit two palaces built by King Ludwig II, one of Bavaria s most famous characters a reclusive dreamer enamored with the music of Richard Wagner and eventually declared insane. Tour his grand Neuschwanstein Palace, the model for Disney s Cinderella Palace, as well as the much more intimate Linderhof Palace before returning to Garmisch for a dinner of local specialties. (B/L/D) GARMISCH/ZUGSPITZE Monday, May 14 Ascend Germany s highest peak, the Zugspitze, walk on a glacier, and dip yaleedtravel.org/bavariaspring18 your toes across the uncontrolled border with Austria. One of the world s few remaining rack railways will take you to Lake Eibsee, and transfer to a cable car to soar up the mountain, which provides breathtaking views of the lake s green waters. After a chance to hike and eat on the mountaintop, return to Garmisch for an evening and dinner at your leisure. (B/L) Tour Munich s famous Cuvilliés Theater, a masterpiece of Rococo decoration saved from destruction in 1943, and the home to the first performances of Mozart s Idomeneo. MUNICH/MURNAU AM STAFFELSEE Tuesday, May 15 Descend from the Alps to Munich by way of the town of Murnau am Staffelsee, which the Blue Rider Group made its home in the early 20th century. Formed by artists such as Gabriele Münter, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc, the Blue Rider Group created an artistic revolution that gave rise to German Expressionism. Walk in the footsteps of these famous artists and hear about how the landscape and local crafts changed their influenced their work. Travel on to Munich to settle into traditional German comfort in the stylish Anna Hotel before an exclusive reception in the Glyptothek, Munich s museum of ancient art. (B/L/D) MUNICH Wednesday, May 16 Wander through Munich s spectacular Old Town to see magnificent churches including the Gothic Frauenkirche, the Baroque detailing of St. Peter, and Asam Church s Rococo style. Marvel at the stories and intricate mechanics of the famous Glockenspiel cuckoo clock in Marienplatz. A special guided tour of the spectacular Rococo Cuvillies Theater, favorite haunt of Ludwig II and where Mozart premiered his Idomeneo, will set the stage to revisit the famed composer in Salzburg. (B/L/D) MUNICH Thursday, May 17 Revisit the Blue Rider group from Murnau am Staffelsee at the Lenbachhaus Museum, which boasts the largest collection of the Blue Riders work worldwide. 5 SALZBURG/ HERRENCHIEMSEE Friday, May 18 Pack your bags and head to Salzburg, a city formerly under Bavarian rule, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route, visit a third palace of King Ludwig II, his Herrenchiemsee on Herreninsel, the island he purchased as a location for his own Versailles. After lunch, continue on to Salzburg to settle into sumptuous Sheraton Grand Salzburg, just off the famed Mirabell Gardens. Walk in the footsteps of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a guided tour of his birthplace, Salzburg, hailed as the Rome of the North, a Baroque gem of church spires traversed by the Salzach River. After feasting your eyes on so much grand architecture, enjoy a feast of local specialties at a local restaurant. (B/L/D) SALZBURG/KOENIGSSEE Saturday, May 19 Escape back into the Alpine countryside to visit Lake Königssee in the Alpine Berchtesgaden National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Ferry across the emerald green water ringed by tall mountains to visit the 12th century pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomew, accessible only by boat or a vertiginous hike through the mountains you see above you. Afterwards, ascend to the Eagle s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), a private tea-house getaway built as a gift for Adolf Hitler on a rocky outcrop of Mount Kehlstein.
