2 PAGE 2 VIEW DATES, PRICES & BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY HERE Introduction The Jura Mountains are one of the least explored pockets of the Alps. If it is peace, tranquility and a true taste of authentic mountain life you seek then look no further! Known colloquially as le pays qui respire' (the country with breathing space), the inhabitants take immense pride in their local produce and the Trans Jura is not only great cross country skiing but also a memorable feast for all the senses. Our Trans Jura Swiss starts in La Cure on the Swiss Franco border and ends 153kms later at the aptly named 'Vue des Alpes'. The ski route, which was first completed in 1976, crosses the Haut-Jura regional park and is mosttly along prepared, pressed tracks. Unlike the jagged peaks of the Alps, the landscape is more Nordic and rolling and each day we aim to cover 20-35kms of the trail, carrying only our daypacks, arriving at our overnight hotel or gite to find our luggage waiting for us. In this quiet corner of Switzerland, amidst a weather beaten mountain culture cut off for centuries from both France and Switzerland, it's not unusual to ski all day without seeing anyone else. This is a unique trip and a true journey on skis, where the enigmatic landscapes will captivate and reward even the most seasoned of traveller. Ski Hire Available Cross country skiing equipment, which includes fishscale classic skis (not skates or waxables), Saloman (or similar) boots and bindings, and poles, can be hired locally at the start of the traverse. The total ski hire for the week is 145 Euros per person (this includes the cost of returning the equipment to the hire shop at the end of the trip). Which Jura Traverse is for you? Our two tours are for experienced cross country skiers wishing to cross the mountains of the Northern Jura either via the French or the Swiss routes, point-to-point, from valley to valley. Both trips offer well groomed, first class trails and soak up the history, culture and gastronomy along the way. Our Traverse of the Jura Ski Tour - France holiday (there is one night in Switzerland) is the ideal trip to first cross country skiing experience in the Jura, offering a challenging 146km of piste, 2600m of ascent and descent. Passing through several small villages on route, our accommodation is in a mix of characterful auberges and small hotels with limited single room options. Our Traverse of the Jura Ski Tour - Switzerland holiday (there is one night in France) is a more challenging tour offering a challenging 153km of piste, 3600m of ascent and descent with the occasional section of un-groomed trail. There are occasional sections above the tree line and because of the higher elevation the Swiss side has a more remote ski touring feel to it. This offers all hotel accommodation with single room s options. Both trips are superb in their own right and many of our travellers come back to do the trip a second time, switching routes or even doing the same one again! Explore International. This holiday is part of our Explore International range. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience!

3 PAGE 3 Is this holiday for you? At 153 kms, the Swiss Jura Traverse is a long, sustained journey across remote, undulating and hilly terrain and is only suitable for those who have previous cross-country ski or nordic ski touring experience. Distances covered will vary from 20 to 35kms per day, on a combination of mainly groomed but some unpressed trails also. Skiers should have good knowledge of cross-country techniques (they must have fully mastered the snow plough) and be of good fitness. Technique coaching will be included, but you should be able to ski for 6 to 8 hours each day. Note that your guide will try to fulfil the itinerary, but this is dependent on weather/snow and track conditions. We run this tour at the time of year when snow is most reliable and the tracks are well-maintained. In the event of bad weather or poor snow conditions, alternative skiing will be arranged visiting the highest Nordic ski areas locally, offering comparative distances each day where possible. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Les Rousses. A timed transfer from the train station at La Cure is provided. Meet at the hotel in the small French ski town of Les Rousses, close to Morez and Morbier famous for watch and clock making. Les Rousses is easily reached from Geneva Airport by taking the train to La Cure. A timed shuttle bus from La Cure Railway Station to the group hotel is provided or a taxi can be arranged. Les Rousses has ATM's, outdoor shop, post office, supermarket and pharmacy, for any last minute purchases. Our guide will meet us at our accommodation in the afternoon to assist with organising any ski hire MEALS D Day 2: Climb above the Col de la Givrine to Pralets (1300m) and up to the Col du Marchairuz (1447m) We begin our Trans Jura journey with a short transfer to Col de la Givrine where we don our skis. We ski through true Nordic terrain, rolling along the ridge at around 1300m elevation to the meadows of Pralets where we can stop to eat our picnic lunch. From Pralets we continue along the ridge and make a final climb to our overnight accommodation at a hotel on the Col du Marchairuz at 1447m. DESCENT 230M ASCENT 460M TIME 6 HRS SKIING HOURS DISTANCE 21KM MEALS BD Day 3: Ski to Pont (1100m) via the Col du Mollendruz (1200m). Most of our skiing today is through open countryside on trails linking the high Summer pastures below Mont Tendre (1678m).. We stop for lunch at the 'Refuge Bon Accueil' an old railway carriage which has been converted to provide an unusual mountain refuge at 1500m. After lunch we descend to the Col Mollendraz (1200m). We transfer by taxi down to the Lac de Joux and the village of Pont (1100m) where we check into our nearby accommodation. DESCENT 700M ASCENT 340M TIME 6 HRS SKIING HOURS DISTANCE 17KM MEALS BD

4 PAGE 4 Day 4: Ski through the village of Les Charbonnieres and climb to Le Porteau. Descend to Metabief. Leaving Pont we continue along the TJS and ski through the village of Les Charbonnieres and climb through the forest of the Petit Risoux to Le Porteau. Here we expect to find an 'untracked' section of trail in the forest where we can either walk or make the trail ourselves! We finish this stage with a delightful ski below the foot of Mont d'or and a final 300m ski down to Metabief, a small ski town and our destination for the day. Some small shops are accessible here. DESCENT 755M ASCENT 740M TIME 8 HRS SKIING HOURS DISTANCE 29KM MEALS BD Day 5: Along the border with France to Les Cernets. We continue our Swiss Jura Traverse with a long but satisfying leg along the border with France. Our route takes us first through deep forest, then the open farmland of Les Fourgs where we take lunch. Continuing on well prepared trails, we have a short section where we must remove our skis and descend to once again cross the Swiss border at les Verrieres-des-Joux. There is a sting in today's tail as we make a final climb of around 200m on foot to reach our hotel for the night at Les Cernets. DESCENT 730M ASCENT 800M TIME 6-7 HRS SKIING HOURS DISTANCE 33KM MEALS BD Day 6: Ski over rolling terrain to the small Swiss village of La Chaux-du-Milieu. A shorter day today means we can enjoy a later start. The trails from Les Cernets offer first class skiing as they regularly are used for both local and international cross country ski races. Meandering through small settlements and farmland we have now reached the canton of Neuchatel. Our destination is La Brevine known to locals as Swiss Siberia due to the fact that it once recorded Switzerland's lowest ever temperature of an amazing -40 degrees! To celebrate it hosts the annual Fête du Froid (cold festival) but don't worry we are promised that was a one off! DESCENT 500M ASCENT 500M TIME 5-6 HRS SKIING HOURS DISTANCE 21KM MEALS BD Day 7: Ascend to the Tete-de-Ran. Descend to 'La Vue des Alpes'. Our final day on the Swiss Jura traverse crosses two valleys. The first 10 kilometres leaving La Brevine is on flat open trails to reach La Chaux-du-Milieu. We then climb over the 'La Grande Joux' giving us views north to the Val de Morteau in France. We aim to lunch at the auberge at Som Martel. A fun descent through the woods to La Sagne brings us to our second valley crossing where we commence our final 300m climb to reach the col of the Tete-de- Ran where we have views down to la Chaux de Fonds, birthplace of architect Le Corbusier. We complete our traverse with an easy ski down to La Vue des Alpes where on a clear day we are rewarded with views of the Jura as well as a stunning panorama of the Alps. We overnight here and enjoying a well deserved celebratory meal.

Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be led by a fully qualified BASI Nordic Ski Instructor. Altitude This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip. Spending Money CHF250 to 300 should be sufficient to cover your miscellaneous expenses including, ski pass (45CHF) lunches, drinks and any other personal outgoings. You will also need some euros for your evening in Les Rousses at the beginning of the trek (30-40 Euros are recommended). If you intend to hire ski equipment you will also need 145 Euros. There are several ATMs in Geneva Airport and en route. Guidance On Tipping It is OK to tip your guide if you wish to thank him or her. We recommend that any tips be given by the group as a whole rather than as individuals. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A trek bag is not required for this holiday. You can however purchase a KE trek bag for Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

7 PAGE 7 You will only need to carry a daysack on the ski days and your main baggage will be transferred every day between accommodation points. Luggage will be mainly transported in cars and small vans so we would ask that you keep both size and weight of luggage to a respectable limit of around 12 kg (and only one bag per person). It is worth noting that you will be required to carry your own bag up and down from your accommodation every day; luggage with wheels can be useful for this holiday. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit. Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas. Currency The unit of currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a cross-country ski trip getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime in the 6 to 8 week period leading up to your trip. Running, cycling, indoor rowing machines and swimming are excellent cross training methods for developing endurance. Nordic walking or the

8 PAGE 8 cross trainer machine are also excellent ways to imitate the arm action needed for cross-country skiing and help to build up arm and shoulder strength. Cross-country skiing is excellent cross training for other sports and as a lowimpact exercise is a great way to improve your fitness. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate The temperatures that we can expect to encounter during the day will be in the range minus 15 to 2 C, though it can feel much warmer than this in the reflected sunlight high on the slopes away from the forest. In the evening temperatures will drop well below freezing levels. January to March is statistically the time of most snow in the Jura but mountainous areas do generate their own weather systems and variations cannot be ruled out. Books Switzerland - Lonely Planet Guides Burgundy Jura - Michelin Green Guide The official GTJ guide (currently only available in French) can be purchased from your guide for around 12 euros Maps Doubs, Jura Michelin Local Maps Flight Information Flight Inclusive Or Land Only? Please refer to the 'Joining arrangements & transfers' for further details.

Many are professional guides and instructors with an unrivalled knowledge of the areas in which they work. In many parts of the world, we recruit local guides with appropriate training and experience. A leader should be fun to travel with and ready to share with you their enthusiasm for adventure travel and their knowledge of the area. Alongside the group leader, there will be a local support crew, which could be just a driver, or a complete team of guides, drivers, porters, muleherders and cooks. It is important to us that our clients are not the only beneficiaries of the travel experience, but that we share a two-way relationship with the areas that we visit. We make sure that our local staff are well treated and well paid, we respect indigenous cultures, take care to protect the environment and make the most of every opportunity to make a positive contribution wherever we travel. In addition to holding an AITO 5-star Sustainable Tourism rating, we are recipients of AITO s Achievement in Sustainable Tourism Award in recognition of the work carried out over the past 20 years, giving back to the communities and areas we visit. We have been awarded Highly Commended status in the Best Tour Operator category of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards, and were named Best Trekking Operator on Earth by National Geographic Magazine, whose criteria included commitment to responsible tourism. We continue to travel responsibly, and more information on our policy, practice, and specific projects can be found at and on the website of our partner charity the Juniper Trust: KEs Mountain Code is issued to our staff, trek leaders and overseas agents, and we recommend it to our clients, too! Your Complete Financial Protection KE Adventure Travel is a fully licensed and bonded tour operator. We are a member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), bonded with the CAA (ATOL 2808) and ABTA licensed (W4341). You can book your trip with KE Adventure Travel in complete confidence that all monies you pay for a trip are fully protected. BOOKING YOUR HOLIDAY Making a Booking The easiest way to make your booking is online. You will need to pay a deposit at the time of booking. This is normally 200 but for some holidays with special permit fees or internal flights, this may be more. The amount of deposit required for an individual holiday is given on the dates and prices page of the holiday. Late bookings will require full payment. We cannot confirm any booking until we receive your fully completed booking form. Adventure Travel Insurance IMPORTANT - It is a condition of joining any of our trips that you are insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services). We also strongly recommend that you take out holiday cancellation insurance, as all deposits paid are non-refundable. Please ensure that your insurer is aware of your KE Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken. You will then need to advise us of your policy details and complete an Insurance Declaration Form. CAMPBELL IRVINE DIRECT travel insurance is available to EU residents and will cover the majority of KE Adventure holidays. It has been designed to provide cover for activities normally excluded by other insurers such as trekking, mountain biking and climbing. Please note that certain activities may attract a higher premium. In addition Campbell Irvine Direct cannot provide cover for KE climbing trips above 6000m. Cover for these can be obtained through either the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) or Snowcard. TRAVELEX is a USA based insurer offering travel insurance, which can be used by US citizens and US residents only. KE recommends the "Travelex Select" package for our holidays. If your holiday involves using mountaineering equipment (ropes, harness or crampons), for climbing or glacial travel, you should consider the "Adventure Plus Pak" optional upgrade on the Travelex Select Plan. Please refer to the 'Description of Coverage' for a summary of

11 PAGE 11 the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the applicable Protection Plan. This policy will also cover KE climbing trips above 6000m. We hope that this trip notes has answered most of your questions. Please feel free to contact us and speak to one of our experts.
