2 ZeroCinq, the place to be for cyclists Index Zero Cinq is a sports initiative run by an enthusiastic group of Dutch people in the Southern French Alps. From the mountain village of Puy Saint Vincent, surrounded by parks like the Ecrins and the Queyras and legendary Alpine cols, we organize various sports packages. We mainly do this for cycling as well as for wintersports, trailruning, and mountainbiking. We have settled down in this sunny mountain village because of our passion for cycling and for the mountains. We would like to share this passion with you, when we have you as our guest in one of our accommodations which are part of ZeroCinq. Are you looking for a bikehotel, a luxurious group chalet, or do you prefer an apartment or a quiet campsite? In all these locations, we welcome you with the same enthusiasm and we will show you the way through the fantastic surroundings. Check our bike packages on We hope you enjoy cycling in our backyard. Team ZeroCinq A few tips for many beautiful and sporty bikerides: You will regularly see fountains and other water points along the road. In most case the water is delicious mountain water, which can be drunk without any problems. However, if eau non potable is written, the water is not safe to drink. There are a number of routes starting in Puy Saint Vincent. These routes start with a lovely descent to Les Vigneaux, which you have to climb at the end of the route. You can decide to park the car in Les Vigneaux, saving you 4 kilometers and a 300m climb at the end. Make sure you bring enough warm and windproof clothing with you. The wind on the top of the mountain passes often blows hard. Remember the weather in the mountains can change quickly. When you decend, always use a combination of front and rear brakes. Never brake only with your rear brake, to prevent slipping. Most mountain passes have signs along the road with information about the mountain pass. It s a short (2km) but steep climb, with gradients between 8 and 15%. Next you descend via a quiet road, past the airfield to Saint Crepin. After Guillestre you ride through the gorges of the Guil before starting the climb up the Col d Izoard. The Gorge is beautiful, and is deceptively flat but can be very tiring in a (common) headwind. There is a left turn, (1km before the Chateau de Queyras) where the climb of the Col d Izoard really starts. A gentle climb leads to a village from where the real test, both physically and mentally really begins. The road seems endless while the real climbing begins only at the beginning of the forest. You quickly gain altitude up some shaded hairpins, and after a short downhill you will climb past the Bobet and Coppi monuments. Pay attention! this is not the top of the climb, but the so-called Casse Déserte; there are still two tough kilometers ahead to climb. Enjoy the summet for some photos before the descent to Briançon is both fast and beautiful and quite open. If you start in Puy Saint Vincent the route is 119 kilometers and 1900 Altitude +. The Col de Montgenèvre is a climb of 9 kilometers with an average gradient of less than 5%. The climb is not very special and the traffic doesn t make it any better. The best part of the tour starts after the Col de Montgenèvre. We descend to Oulx, where we take the route along the river Dora di Bardonecchia; a friendly ascending road up to Bardonecchia. Have a break for a good cup of coffee or cappuccino as only the Italians can make. After Bardonecchia begins the nine kilometer climb of the Col de l Echelle. The first 3 kilometers, until the sign Col de l Echelle 6km, are very steep. It is a beautiful climb through the forest, where the gradient is 5.5% on average, with a maximum of 13%. On top you can enjoy a beautiful flat road, then the route returns to Briançon through the beautiful Vallée de la Clarée. Col de Vars is the easiest big climb around Briançon and goes up gradually with an average gradient of 6%. 1070m of altitude is gained over a distance of 18 kilometers, so you can keep up speed during the climb. After passing the ski resort of Vars, the last four kilometers go through the quiet green alpine pastures and ends on the barren top. Here you will find the refuge Napoleon for necessary refreshments. Then we descend about 60 kilometers through the valley of the L Ubaye passing another cycling village (Barcelonnette), until we can take the road to the Col de Pontis (360 additional metres of ascent). This is your opportunity to cycle (perhaps) France s most beautiful climb. This short (5km) but very steep climb with an average gradient of 9.5% is hard but very beautiful. Scenic views, traditional villages and a quiet road make the pain definitely worth it. After the descent you pick up the trail again at the Lac de Serre- Ponçon, back to Guillestre. If you choose not to take this pass, follow the road through Le Sauze-du-Lac, Lac de Serre-Ponçon lake and Embrun back to Guillestre. Then the real climb starts with a test of endurance and willingness to suffer. The beautiful climb, continuously between 9% and 11% rewards you with views of the summits of OisansMassif and then an endless panorama from the top. You return the way you came, obviously without the pain! Careful of the potential to pick up speed. The Dutch cyclist Joop Zoetemelk, who lived at the start of the climb for several years, once said about the Col du Granon: This has always been one of my regular training routes throughout my career (he came second 6 times in the Tour de France and won in 1980 ). This climb of nearly two kilometers is steep, with gradients of up to 10%. Once you re at the top you have a beautiful view at the valley of the river Durance. Then we descend on a rural road to the airfield and on to Guillestre. The Col de Vars starts just outside Guillestre and is only quite steep at the beginning, but nothing above 10%. The landscape feels Provençal, but changes as you get higher into a typical Alpine landscape. The climb can certainly be very hot in Summer due to lack of wind. On top you can find the Refuge Napoleon to replenish your energy and hydrate. Back to Guillestre is the same way, a wonderful descent with clear curves where you have the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings, which you might have missed going up. At Guillestre you can choose to ride back past the airfield, enjoy the climb back up to Champcella, and blast down the wall from the other side. If you are tired you can ride back on the provincial road in the direction of L Argentiere la Bessée (less beautiful, but also less difficult) and turn left finishing your day with a few kilometers uphill to Puy Saint Vincent. The forest and streams provide the necessary cooling. After Ailefroide you start the real climb into the high mountains. Through a number of hairpins, with the percentage rising to 11% and ending up at 1874 meters. The reward you get is a beautiful view at the Glacier Blanc and other summits. Chambran (1701m) The second climb of the Three Valleys tour starts in Pelvoux. After descending from Ailefroide and passing the tunnel you turn left at the sign for l Eychauda. The climb is 6.7 kilometers and a 450m height gain. The average percentage is 6.8%, with nothing above 10%. The first part of the climb leads through the trees, then the landscape is barren and rugged. Through the former glacial valley you will end up in the hamlet Chambran. Entre les Aygues (1623m) The last valley of this trip includes the steepest tracks and the worst road. Do not let this you stop you, mainly because the valley is beautiful and the effort is well worth it. The climb begins in Vallouise and goes through the valley of the river L Onde in a westerly direction. From the village of Villard the road gets worse and the gradient sometimes rises up to 15%. The tour starts with a hairpin dominated descent to the charming village of Vallouise. We continue up the road towards Pelvoux, on a road that rises gently. After the tunnel the serious climb begins, although the steepest part begins after Ailefroide. The road goes up nicely through the forest, until you reach the campsite at Ailefroide where you can refill your water bottle. The next 4 kilometers after Ailefroide are a tough climb with a gradient up to 11%. The last kilometer is almost flat with a magnificent view of the Glacier Balanc and good for cooling-down before reaching the refuge Pré de Madame Carle. The hardest part of the descent is also in the first kilometers, it is steep and the road is not that good and the hairpins follow one another quickly. This village is at the begining of the ascent to the Col du Lautaret, the first climb today. 13 kilometers to the col are a good warm up, the gradient does not exceed 5.3%. The next 8 kilometers to the Col du Galibier differ in many ways from the Lautaret. The climb is steep and tortuous but the scenery and the views many times better. At the top the wind can blow hard and the weather in the Savoy may differ significantly from the weather in the Southern Hautes Alpes; keep this in mind and always bring a windbreaker. The difference in the weather is clearly reflected in the vegetation and the greenness of the landscape, green on the northern slopes and dry and arid in the south. From the top we descend about 18 kilometers and 1200 meters, to the village of Valloire. In Valloire can refill your water bottle. From here we turn around and climb the Galibier from Valloire. There is a possibility to decscend after Valloire, to the Maurienne valley and climb the Telegraph as well. The Col du Galibier is 18 kilometers of climbing with an average gradient of 7%, that makes this climb very hard. The closer to the col, the harder it gets and the rougher the landscape. But once you re at the top you may rightly be proud. All that remains is a wonderful descent to Le Monêtier-les-Bains. The two steep kilometers you ll find after a wonderful 13 kilometer descent from Puy Saint Vincent to the Freissiniere Ramp. A real killer with gradients up to 20%, for that reason called the wall. From there it s a nice descend on a quiet country road with little traffic. At Saint-Clément-sur-Durance we cross the Durance river and continue on the eastern bank of the river. At Embrun, the farthest point of the route and well worth it to see while enjoying a drink, we again cross the Durance river and continue our route on the west side of the Durance. After 57 kilometers we are unfortunately forced to follow the provincial road for a while, at least until Saint-Clément-sur-Durance. Here you have the possibility to leave the provincial road and cycle back crossing the wall, once again enjoying the performance of earlier today. The other possibility, so you avoid taking the same road, is to continue on the provincial road to L Argentière-la-Bessée and turn left towards Puy Saint Vincent. A round tour which is cycled entirely in Italy and starts less than one hours drive from Puy Saint Vincent. The Colle delle Finestre is the main col of this tour and also the highest point (Cima Coppi) of the Giro d Italia in The round trip starts in Cesane Torinese, just across the border after Montgenèvre. The climb of the Colle delle Finestre begins 35 kilometers after, at Susa. The Colle delle Finestre is 18.5 kilometers long with 1700m height gain, has an average gradient of 9.2% and a maximum of 14%. From the beginning the road climbs steeply, and after a while a gradient of 8% feels suddenly friendly. What makes this climb extremely challenging, but also unique, are the last 7.8 kilometers on a dirt road. After this huge steep climb there is another mountain waiting to be climbed, Sestriere from Pragelato. This climb with a length of 9.2 kilometers and an average gradient of 5.4% is easy compared to the Finestre. From Sestriere the only thing left is a quiet descent back to Cesane Torinese. From Embrum we start with a relatively easy trip around the eastern part of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. The word easy is relative, the first 8 kilometers we climb from Embrun (870 meters) to the village of Puy Saint Eusèbe at 1220 meters. After this it is almost flat to Saint-Apollinaire, where you have a beautiful view on the lake. Then we descend to the lake and follow the road to Guillestre. From Guillestre we cycle about 18 kilometers through the magnificent Gorge du Guil. The road is false flat up until the exit Arvieux. Arvieux is a good place to take a break and refill your water bottle before you start the real climbing. The steepest part of the Col d Izoard begins where the hairpins start and the route continues in the forest. About 2 kilometers below the summit, where you are moving into a moonscape, the road goes down slightly, before you start with the last tough 2 kilometers. The descent is dominated by hairpins on good asphalt. From Briançon we take the scenic route through Villard-Meyer to Les Vigneaux. From here we descend through L Argentière-la-Bessée down to the start of the Freissiniere Ramp. This ramp, perhaps biked the most often this week, is in the Embrum Man and often the decisive climb; short but very steep. Then return to Embrun where you can (if desired) dive in the lake. (For those with excess energy this 13-kilometer climb can be added to the tour, but keep in mind that there are still many beautiful and hard cols to come). You continue towards Allemont where you start the Col de la Croix de Fer. A climb of 28 kilometers with a 1337m height gain. At Saint Martin D Arc you descend to 710 meters. Then you climb nearly 2000 meters to the top of the Galibier at 2645 meters. Within these 2000 altimeters two significant cols could be listed, the Telegraph and the Galibier. After about a third of the climb you will pass the village of Valloire, a good place to take a break and refill your waterbottle. From Valloire the real suffering begins, especially since you have already done many kilometers. These 18 kilometers which have an average gradient of 7% are very tough. 23 42 On the 13th of July, the Belgium Philippe Thys, first ever triple Tour champion (1913, 1914, 1920), was the very first to conquer the Vars and the Izoard passes during the 10th stage (Nice- Briançon) of the Tour de France. After a fall in the Siant-Michel pass, he crossed the Allos Pass (the 8th to cross it that year) trailing the leader by almost 3 minutes, and by the time he reached the Vars pass he was back in the lead. He got a flat tyre descending to Guilestre... but won his third consecutive stage after having passed the Izoard as leader of the race. This sequence of three mountain passes has been programmed 13 times in the history ot the Tour ( ) Even though he had the best score in some stages during his Tour (5 out of 15), he finished 14th never having worn the moillot jaune. At the 6th stage, while in second position, he broke one of his wheels and trailed behind three hours... Finally, the lucky man was his fellow countryman Firmin Lambot who had already won in 1919, he won by sheer perseverance on points that year aged 37, without having won a single stage outright. Philippe Thys never took part in the Giro. To win the Tour, first you need to be in very good health, then you need to have good luck, and only in the third place is the need to be a good climber D.
