He was awarded the New You Achievement Award Fitness Inspirer for Australia, and has been nominated as Fitness Professional of the Year. He will be designing the training programme for our trek and leading you all way to Kokoda Station where this epic trek is completed. DAY 1 FLY TO PORT MORESBY. Met on arrival and private transfer to your very comfortable accommodation at the Holiday Inn Express. The hotel complex features restaurants, comfortable bar areas, a swimming pool, and modern fully airconditioned rooms with all facilities. A Team briefing is held this afternoon to discuss final preparations for your trek. Early evening Team dinner, then off for a good nights sleep to prepare for your early morning departure. DAY 2 TO UA-ULE CREEK (BLD) Depart Port Moresby for Owers Corner. Enroute, you meet your trek Crew before taking a quick tour of Bomana war cemetery to pay your final respects to those who died to protect Australia from a possible invasion. Your first days walk includes crossing the Famous Goldie River and after lunch, the steep ascent and descent of Imita Ridge. It was on Imita Ridge that the Australians dug in for what they thought was to be their last stand against the advancing Japanese forces. Only days before, the Australians had been blasted out of their hurriedly dug defences above Ofi Creek on Irobaiwa Ridge, by a well located Japanese mountain gun. The Australians then retreated to Imita Ridge and were now not prepared to give another inch. It was at this point that the Japanese forces were ordered to retreat and the second phase of the Kokoda campaign commenced which involved the Aussies pushing the Japanese back onto the northern beaches where they had landed 6 months earlier. Thick Jungle enclose the Track today. A beautiful walk, but you will be glad you trained hard in your preparations. DAY 3 NAURO VILLAGE (BLD) After breakfast, we commence the ascent of Irobaiwa Ridge and the steep descent to Ofi Creek. After a refreshing swim in the creek, we commence the long ascent of the southern slopes of the Maguli Range, followed by a short descent to Nauro Village which is half way down the northern slopes of the range. As the Australians retreated, ascending and descending the long, never ending slopes of the Maguli Range broke the heart of many an exhausted soldier. DAY 4 MENARI VILLAGE (BLD) We complete the descent of the southern slope of the Maguli Range and enter the swampy land of the Brown River flood plain. Depending on water levels our crossing of the Brown River is always exhilarating and fun. From the flood plains it is a short steep ascent and descent to Menari Village. DAY 5 EFOGI VILLAGE (BLD) Start the day with a short, gradual descent to the base of Brigade Hill. It is then a slow haul up the northern approaches to the summit of Brigade Hill. Here you will have lunch and a short commemorative service will be held honouring all the soldiers who fought and died on Brigade Hill and along the Kokoda Track. An easy but long walk down the northern slopes to a beautiful campsite and creek at Efogi Village. DAY 6 NADURI VILLAGE. (B,L,D) A short steep walk straight up from your campsite to our home village, Naduri. You will arrive before lunch allowing time to wash clothes and rest. The Sabbath commences at 6PM this evening if it s a Friday and your crew will be involved in some Church activities. FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 3

4 OWEN STANLEY RANGE DAY 7 TEMPLETONS CROSSING (BLD) Today you cross the Kokoda saddle the highest point of our trek at 2190 metres. If time permits and the weather and conditions are right, you may be able to travel via the Myola lakes. Once you cross the Kokoda Gap, you descend into Eora Creek valley on the northern side of the Owen Stanley range. The campsite is beautifully located on the side of this fast running creek. DAY 8 ISURAVA BATTLEFIELD (BLD) From your campsite deep in the bottom of this narrow steep sided valley, you trek on to inspect a large Australian army munitions dump site and the Japanese positions in the Eora Creek Forest Fort. After you explore the lower areas of the fort, it is a long but relatively easy trek through thick forest and a short steep ascent to Alola Village. It is then a relatively easy walk to a beautiful camp site at the Isurava Battle field memorial. DAY 9 HOI VILLAGE (BLD) It is a long continuous descent all day where the trek takes you past Deniki. You head past Deniki and arrive on the valley floor, and enjoy a refreshing swim and a bit of washing in the creek at Hoi Village, where you camp on your second last night. Tonight, you ll get the opportunity to farewell your Crew as it s your last night with them in camp before you depart the next day DAY 10 KOKODA STATION (BLD) Up early for your final walk to the end of your trek at Kokoda Station. There is time to inspect the museum and the battle area before you leave by truck for Popondetta airport, approximately 4 hours drive towards the coast. Here you board a scheduled Air Niugini or PNG Air flight back to Port Moresby. It s your last night at your hotel and you leave the country the next day. The evening is spent to clean up and prepare for your last dinner together with everyone on your trek. Your certificate of completion will be awarded to you at dinner tonight. COMPREHENSIVE TREK TRAINING PROGRAM Joe s Summit Programs are geared towards big adventures, the bucket list items. These are specific functional training, Strength and Conditioning, and endurance training programs focused on individual and specialist goals. Whether it be a 12 week running program to get you to your first trail run, a 3 month trek training program or an 18 week ultra-marathon program. Joe s Summit Programs have driven the success of numerous Kokoda, Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp treks. Joe s programs have also seen the largest team of Australians summit Everest. On the 23rd May 2010 at 8:30am I stood on the summit of Mount Everest and I owe that to Joe Bonington. Joe coached the entire Australian team and we put all 5 on the summit. That was the most successful Australian team ever in the history of Australians climbing Everest. I am forever grateful for your guidance, wisdom and for kicking my arse to 29,028ft. STEPHEN BOCK 4

6 PREPARING FOR YOUR JOURNEY... TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Return Travel Itinerary Valid Passport & Visa. Visa apply through PNG HC and consulates Travel Insurance - COMPULSORY MEDICAL SIGN OFF BY GP. Dietary Requirements TO BE ADVISED WHEN BOOKING WHICH DIRECTION TO TREK: Traditionally, Kokoda Trail treks start from the Port Moresby side of the Owen Stanley Range at Owers Corner and ends at Kokoda. Australian troops took this route at the start of and during the Kokoda Campaign in WW2. But the trek can also be done beginning at Kokoda. By contrast, setting off at Owers Corner the challenge is immediate, whereas setting off at Kokoda it s gradual. This is because from the Port Moresby side, the track hits the mountain ranges right away, whereas from the Kokoda side, it elevates into the ranges unhurriedly. WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE? Each Kokoda Trail Expedition trek is registered with the Kokoda Track Authority, and includes the purchase of necessary permits. KTA Rangers are aware of the location of our groups, and are an integral part of our safety plans in case of emergencies. Our tour leaders and guides have many years of professional experience trekking the Kokoda Trail and touring PNG. They are wilderness safety experts certified in Basic and Wilderness First Aid. On Kokoda treks, they re equipped with the latest in wilderness safety equipment and communication technology, including VHF radios as well as mobile and satellite phones. We have emergency preparedness strategies including evacuation plans using designated helipads, airstrips and airports for all our tours. Throughout each trek, we are in close contact with the Kokoda Track Authority. WHAT IS THE FOOD PROVIDED? Trail rations are sourced from supermarkets in Port Moresby that carry Australian and imported food supplies. We supplement those rations with tropical fruits and vegetables, potatoes, and pork purchased from local communities during the trek or tour. If you would like to bring along snacks to supplement meals, we recommend trail mix, lollies, and granola as well as energy and protein bars. Kokoda Trail Expeditions does not allow alcohol or illegal drugs of any kind during the course of tours PERSONAL PORTER You have the option of hiring a Personal Porter to carry your large backpack with all your personal gear in it while you carry a small hydration or daypack. Personal Porters have the added responsibility of making sure you are safe by walking next to you and making sure you don t fall on your backside so you re always in safe hands. When you hire a personal porter for your Kokoda trek, you re also helping the local communities who rely on tourism for their livelihoods. The cost for a Personal Porter is $389 per person. CLOTHING SUGGESTIONS FOR THE TREK Thongs (these are great when you are showering) / sandals. Good rainproof jacket and trousers. Thermal underwear. Whilst not required we use these to sleep in as they are lightweight.. Socks (at least 4-6 pairs or more), keep a pair dry at all times. Lightweight trekking pants for trek days (x 2).Trekking quick-dry are best, as these will dry out fast once wet. Have long pants that you can make into shorts (long pants are great so you don t get cuts on your legs whilst trekking). Pants or leggings for evening (have a spare pair of trek pants and if cold put my thermals underneath and make sure they are in a waterproof bag so you have dry clothes for end of day). Long sleeved shirts with Collar x 2 (or short sleeves). Trekking shirts quick dry are great. Take long sleeves again to protect you against the sun and cuts on your arm. You can roll the sleeves up if it s too hot. Polar fleece jumper or soft shell jackets (again just keep in a water proof bag for end of the day). Wool hat / beanie (take light weight ones great at night if its gets cold). Sun bucket hat or baseball hat (very important). Underwear. Have trekking ones you can wash in and dry in a day). WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING A good backpack. A day pack (if hiring a personal porter). A travelling bag with your clothes and gear. Clothing, including two sets for trekking, one for cold weather and one for sleeping. Good hiking or military boots. Metal hiking poles (You have the option to bring one or two poles). A lightweight sleeping bag / bivvy bag Ground foam or Inflatable mat and pillow Durable plastic garbage bags to keep gear dry Personal first aid kit. Plate, cup, knife, fork, and spoon. Hydration/camel pack or water bottles. Purifying tabs. Torch and spare batteries. Camera, mobile phone, charger and any other personal items Toilet roll and toiletries. Insect repellent and sunscreen. Some nibbles and Gatorade or Powerade powdered drink It s a good idea to bring the bare minimum on your Kokoda trek and to keep the weight of your backpack between 10-15kg if carrying your own pack. 6
