Project Info Sheet Vanuatu ADRA Connections Trip For Groups in 2018 CONNECTIONS NEW ZEALAND ADRA NZ in Vanuatu Access to clean water is never taken for granted in rural communities in Vanuatu, with many villages lacking safe, sustainable and secure water supplies, no sanitation facilities and poor hygiene practices. This lack of clean water facilities result in poor health which does not only affect a person s body, but also their ability to earn, attend to family duties and contribute to society. Sanma and Penama provinces have the second and third highest ranking for incidences of health related diseases in Vanuatu. Many of these diseases could be prevented through the use of a clean water supply. The Water, Sanitation, Hygiene Promotion and Resilience Building Project aims to reduce the disease rate in these provinces by providing communities with safe water, sanitary hygiene facilities and education about safe hygiene practices. The project will impact 9,000 people! Snapshot Statistics 9,000 people will be directly impacted by this project. 2,000 households, 19 schools, and 12 aid posts will receive sanitary latrines. $1,439,537 is the total cost for this project to take place. ADRA s Project Activities Establishing water committees in the villages to promote safe hygiene practices. Training men and women in the community about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene practices. Supplying the community with 2,000 latrines to be installed in households, schools, and aid posts. Integrating disaster risk reduction principles and plans to increase water safety in the event of a disaster.

Impact Through this project, ADRA is providing the Sanma and Penama provinces with over 2,000 fly-proof latrines which are being constructed in households, schools and aid posts. People in these communities now have better access to resilient and clean water resources and improved sanitation, lowering the risk of disease significantly. ADRA is now in the process of training individuals from the community to manage and maintain the water and sanitation systems. The project is also providing villages with disaster risk reduction analysis and planning training to help the communities to be prepared and know how to respond in a safe and sanitary manner. The communities are becoming more resilient to disasters. Impact Story David Silas is one of the oldest men in his village and has witnessed much devastation throughout his lifetime. Underground wells have been the only source of water for people in this village for over forty years. The water would carry mud and disease leading to illness and death because there were no other options available. Most of my mates who first settled with me have dies from it. Through ADRA projects, David s village has been able to receive an alternative source of safe and sanitary water. I am so happy and proud to be the only survivor of that time to witness this huge miracle of the new water supply project into our village, shares David with tears in his eyes. This was only made possible with your support. Our prayer at ADRA is that you continue to help and support David and many other villages just like his.

Connections Project Activities Your Project Activities: Increase access to safe water and use of sanitation facilities by building water tanks and toilets. Increase the communities knowledge and teach best practices on water, hygiene, sanitation through fun games, songs and kids club events. ADRA will be constructing water tanks and toilets for this community. Your team will assist ADRA with these activities. There will be digging, laying of pipes, construction of water tanks and building toilets for the school or households. Here is a YouTube Link provided by ADRA Vanuatu on how to build a latrine: Do not worry about the skills of your team, we have trained professionals working along side and instructing your team as well as all the community members will pitch in and help. Your team will also be responsible for running a Kids Club for the children in the community. The purpose of the Kids Club will be to teach the local children sanitation and hygiene. You can sing songs/play games that teach the children about washing your hands after the toilet, before you eat, brushing their teeth etc.

Expenses An ADRA Connections trip provides a memorable and enriching personal experience of development work, where you have the opportunity to be involved in ADRA s work firsthand in a safe and culturally appropriate manner. The costs associated with your trip reflect this unique and meaningful approach. Trip costs are split into three different parts: Project Costs The Project Costs for this trip are: $1,500 NZD* per person. The Project Costs include: a $250 non-refundable deposit payment, the cost of materials and project management, accommodation, food and transport while on project. The Project Costs are fully tax-deductible and fully fund- raise able. This component is required to be paid in full to ADRA New Zealand two months before departure. Personal Costs The Personal Costs for this trip are: $500 NZD* per person. The Personal Costs include: Comprehensive Insurance Cover through RMS (Risk Management Services), sightseeing costs as included in the itinerary, all accommodation, food and travel while sightseeing. Unfortunately, this is not tax-deductible. This component is to be paid in full to ADRA New Zealand, one month before departure. Travel Costs Travel Costs include: flights, vaccinations, first aid kit, visas, and any additional sightseeing not included in the itinerary. These cost are not included in the ADRA Connections Trip costs, and are the teams own responsibility, including all bookings and arrangements. *Estimated cost only, based on 15 people for 10 days.

FAQ What is ADRA s part in making the trip a success? ADRA will look after all in-country logistics for you. We will: Liaise and co-ordinate with the in-country ADRA office to fully plan your trip, including all bookings for accommodation, food and transport in-country. Organise your project and sightseeing activities after the trip. Provide you with three orientation programs prior to travelling covering topics about good development practices, culture and custom awareness, including a country guide with comprehension details about what to expect and how to prepare for your trip, and safety tips and emergency management. An induction program after arrival in country, with daily briefings for the project and assistance in managing cultural differences or culture shock. Provide resources to support you in your fundraising (if required). Provide you with quality travel insurance. Provide an ADRA Host to travel with you throughout the whole trip to prepare you for your project, manage logistics, bookings and any difficulties or emergencies that may arise, translate for you, and guide you as you participate in your Connections trip. What is my part in making the trip a success? ADRA will look after most things for you while participating in a Connections Trip. Your responsibilities are to: Complete your registration process, with all required documents in a reasonable and timely manner. Fund-raise if necessary and pay the Project and Personal Costs of the trip by the specified deadlines. Book your own flights to arrive in country for the start date of the trip. Arrange your own visa for entry into the country. Register your travel plans on safetravel.goct.nz before departure. Complete your medical check and have all required vaccinations before departure. Purchase any medication required for while you are overseas. Engage in your project while away, respecting the ADRA staff and community in a positive and uplifting way. Seek out opportunities to share your experience with others, so that together we can bring more hope, health, and justice to those that need it most. Consider staying involved in ADRA s work by partnering with the community and project you have just been a part of, through a regular monthly contribution of your choice. Is it a safe place to travel? It is our top priority to provide a trip that will be as safe as possible and we endeavor to do everything we can to look after you while participating in an ADRA Connections Program. ADRA ensures safety standards are implemented as much as we are able to, for food, accommodation, transport and travel. All trips undergo an extensive risk analysis as 90% of risk is reduced by being properly prepared. We have an extensive program in place to do this, and we ask all volunteers to be vigilant in reading material provided and completing orientation workshops assigned to you before your departure. All volunteers are required to register on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Safe Traveller Website ( before departure. If your country of travel

becomes listed as unsafe for travel, trip organisers will liaise with ADRA in country to determine if the trip needs to be postponed. You will be fully contacted and informed should this action ever be deemed necessary. Your ADRA Host will be with you throughout the trip and is available to talk to if you have any concerns for your safety or for the safety of anyone else on the trip. What if something goes wrong? ADRA aims to minimise risks you will be exposed to during your trip. If any incident does occur, we have arranged for an ADRA Host to accompany you throughout the trip. Furthermore, you will be covered by a comprehensive insurance policy while you are away to ensure you are in safe hands throughout your whole travel experience. How do I book my flights? It is each participant s responsibility to organise your own flights to arrive into the country in time for the commencement of your ADRA Connections Trip. We recommend using reliable travel agencies, such as SPD Travel, who can easily assist you to make individual or group bookings. Flights need to be booked as soon as possible after registration and a copy of your flight invoice uploaded as part of completing registration Stage 2. The earlier you book the better, especially if you are travelling during peak season! How do I organise my VISA? It is participants s responsibility to organise their own visa for entry into the country your Connections program will be conducted within. How do I know what vaccinations to get? You can easily find out what vaccinations you will need to get for your trip by contacting your local Travel Doctor. Explore the website and find your nearest clinic at: I can t speak the local language; how will I communicate? An ADRA Host will be with you throughout the trip to help you communicate with the locals. Additional translators will also be made available to help you if the project requires this. We also provide a Country Guide with some key phrases in the local language that we encourage you to practice and learn before you depart. During orientation you will have another chance to try out your language skills, and, if all else fails, body language, facial expressions and smiles can communicate a thousand words... just keep this in mind when trying local food for the first time... be gracious if you don t like it and the people will respect you for trying it even if you didn t like it. What will the accommodation be like? ADRA Connections works closely with local ADRA staff on the ground in country to find accommodation that is safe, respectable and clean. But keep in mind that while travelling and working in a foreign country, things can be quite different from home. ADRA works in some really remote areas for some of our projects, so be prepared while on project to rough it a little more than you may be used to, with the potential of basic bathroom facilities, squat toilets, no running taps, internet or electricity. There may not even be toilet paper (so come prepared).

What will the food be like? During your project, you will get to enjoy a variety of local dishes. Food is often fairly basic, simple food that may be different to what you are used to, but please give it a try, as it s only for a short time. If you don t like it, always remember to be respectful and polite, as food is often a symbol of acceptance and trying food, even just a small amount, can warm the hearts of those who have prepared the food, consolidating their acceptance of you and opening opportunities for new friendships to be made. For health reasons, food provided on the trip will be vegetarian, but optional meat selections may be available at your own risk. If you have special dietary needs, it will be identified as part of your registration processes and where possible special food will be pre- pared, but we also recommend bringing some food from home to meet your needs should you be concerned. ADRA also advises that while in a developing country it is best to drink only bottled water from a sealed container, and only clean your teeth with this same bottled water, as local water can quickly cause contamination often resulting in stomach pain and diarrhea, that can lead to serious health problems. If you have any further questions please don t hesitate to ask: connections@adra.org.nz
