The post became known as Jasper s House. The post was moved to a site on the near Jasper in 829, but the name stuck. -Jasper ark Lodge had humble beginnings as a tent city on the shore of Lac Beauvert in 95. Seven years later in 922, the tents were replaced by 8 log cabins. Expansion continued the next year with additional cabins and the original main building. Take ramp off the hwy to and keep right. -At the 4 way stop, turn right to go to the or stop at the Sampson Mall at the corner and check out the goodies at the Laggan's Bakery. - International on the left after crossing the bridge over the ipestone & past the ost Hotel. -eyto is named after Bill eyto, one of the most colourful personalities of the early history of National ark. Bill was born in Welling, Kent County, England, in 869 and came to Canada in 886. During his lifetime, he worked for the CR, homesteaded, prospected, trapped, guided for Tom Wilson s outfitting company, and was Skoki one of s st wardens. As a mountain guide, he gained a reputation n as an excellent woodsman, whose knowledge of the area was unsurpassed. On guiding trips between and the headwaters of the North Saskatchewan, Summit was a regular overnight camp. Bill would often spend the night by himself at the lakeside which bears his name, preferring the serenity of the lake over the overcrowded campsite. Here are 2 examples: -The CR put Major Rogers in charge of finding a route through the Rockies and Selkirk ns. Tom Wilson was packing supplies for Major Rogers survey crew in 882 when he made the st recorded visit to. He was lead to the lake of little fishes by Stoney Indian, Edwin Hunter. Wilson originally named the lake, Emerald. -In November 883, three CR railway workers, William & Tom McCardell and their partner Frank McCabe stubbled upon a cave containing hot springs on the flank of what is now called Sulphur Recognizing the Block tourist potential of mineral hot springs, the men staked a claim n to the springs. -After the ownership of the springs came into dispute, the federal government on the urging of the CR, took over control of the hot springs and created Hot Springs Reserve in 885. Take the ramp onto Hwy to. Caution, texas gate! -Alternate route: A gate in the fence along Hwy leads to a trail to s Dr. Watch for a gully clear of trees on the R. Just after the gully is the gate. (see back pg) -Else, continue on Hwy and bypass the st Exit for townsite, Norquay exit. -Exit Minnewanka Exit. -@ the top of the ramp, turn LEFT onto the Minnewanka Scenic Drive. -Turn RIGHT into the Cascade ond Day Use Area-picnic tables, small beach, shallow ponds. -, Cascade onds icnic Area. 7 INE Alt. to Cascade onds via Rd & -push your bike through the gate and follow the trail - s Road. -After completing s Dr., your choice is to either: turn Left and take the ramp for Highway to resume the regular route or turn Right and ride through townsite. This route description will assume you turn Right on Norquay Dr. heading into townsite. -Cross the tracks & turn Left on Railway St. following the road around the corner to become Elk St. -At the traffic lights past Safeway, turn Left on Ave. heading out of town. -Cross the Hwy underpass. -Turn Right into the Cascade onds Day Use Area for Lunch and the finish of the ride. Notes on the s : Closeup - gets it s name from "shire", the district in Scotland which was the birthplace of two CR directors, Lord Strathcona and George Stephen. -There is archeological evidence of human activity around the s which date back 0,800 years. -The Cascade onds are man-made. The day use area is a converted gravel pit. Cascade onds icnic Area Buffalo addock CLOSED Minnewanka Interchange Cascade onds -The first part of the route, is a trail. It is very rideable even without a mountain bike. It leads to the road ( Drive) in 0.56km. - Drive(the road) can be washboard in places, but takes you away from the heavy traffic on highway.
