MISSION STATEMENT UIAA MISSION STATEMENT The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation was founded in 1932 in Chamonix and has a global presence on six continents with 92 member associations in 68 countries representing approximately three million people. The UIAA has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since The UIAA promotes the growth and protection of mountaineering and climbing worldwide by: preserving their spirit and traditions advancing safe and ethical mountain practices promoting responsible access, culture and environmental protection supporting youth participation and the Olympic movement 4
5 U.I.A.A DECLARATIONS The UIAA declarations have tackled a number of diverse issues from protection and preservation of the mountain environment to ethical codes aimed at defining values and providing common standards for conduct. 7 U.I.A.A. GENARAL ASSEMBLY The annual UIAA General Assembly is the largest, and most important, gathering of UIAA member federations, commissions, representatives and partners. At the General Assembly, key decisions are made concerning UIAA s role, its activities and budget and elections are held. The 2016 UIAA General Assembly was hosted by the Alpenverein Südtirol in Brixen (Bressanone) Italy from October. 7

12 UIAA UIAA MP COMMISSION OUR MISSION UIAA MP COMMISSION MISSION SPORT SUSTAINABILITY SAFETY MOUNTAIN PROTECTION (MP) COMMISSION Mountain areas are the last natural, unspoilt and free spaces on earth and provide important ecosystem services. Therefore, we aim to contribute to maintaining mountain ecosystems as wild and free, for both the benefit of nature and the enjoyment of mountaineers and humankind. 12
13 UIAA MP COMMISSION MISSION UIAA MP COMMISSION OUR OBJECTIVES INNOVATION Support and reward good practice and innovative initiatives in low impact mountain tourism and mountain conservation. OBJECTIVES AWARENESS AND EDUCATION Raise awareness about mountain environmental issues and furthering education on mountain conservation and sustainable mountain sports practices with member federations and the public. LOBBYING Reinforce the role of the UIAA as an active and recognized key player at international level and among members concerning environmental issues in mountains. 13

16 INNOVATION MOUNTAIN PROTECTION AWARD GOAL To recognize and reward innovative, effective and appropriate efforts that protect mountain environments. The award targets Federations, other non-profit organizations, tourism agencies, and/or mountain protection groups. Projects evaluated by an Award Team: - UIAA mountain protection commission; - External experts; - UIAA partners. Approved projects benefit from publicity through UIAA media channels and access to a crowdsourcing platform. + Once a year, especially outstanding projects are selected by the Award Team for a PRIZE. 5,000 USD 16
17 INNOVATION MOUNTAIN PROTECTION AWARD Biodiversity conservation - protection of endemic, threatened and endangered plant and animal species Waste management and disposal - safe and responsible disposal of sewage and rubbish Resource management - sustainable use of water, firewood and other limited resources Adaptation to / mitigation of climate change impacts - such as carbon offsetting programs Culture and education - training visitors about environmental awareness, as well as respecting and protecting cultural folklore, traditions and identity. 17

19 AWARENESS & EDUCATION RESPECT the MOUNTAINS Our Goals are to: Raise awareness for sustainable environmental practices and spread the word within the outdoor community. Protect mountain ecosystems and cultures in their natural state for future generations. Promote sustainable mountain tourism and activities. Educate and train the next generation of mountain explorers to adopt sustainable practices in mountain regions. 19
20 AWARENESS AND EDUCATION The UIAA Respect the Mountains project encourages all its member federations and mountain stakeholders to adopt the 7 Ways to Respect the Mountains practices by following these simple yet effective actions and help build a sustainable future. These seven ways are: Homework! Study: 20
21 AWARENESS AND EDUCATION THE FIRST UIAA RESPECT THE MOUNTAIN SERIES OF EVENTS RAN THROUGHOUT EUROPE DURING THE SUMMER 2016 SUMMARY OF RESULTS Number of events: 9 Total number of participants: 614 Total nationalities: 19 Distance covered: 55km Cumulative distance covered: 3,316km Number of garbage bags collected: 482 Total amount of waste collected: 4.75 tonnes Please check for more info an final results. 21

23 LOBBYING FOR MOUNTAIN PROTECTION LOBBYING UNFCCC, Mountain Partnership, UNEP and others Achieved observer status at UNFCCC (UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE) COP 22 in Marrakech, Morocco, from 7-18 November 2016; Collaborating with Mountain Partnership to coordinate lobbying activities at COP 22 and other policy forums like the UN s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Contributing to UNEP (UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMM) s and GRID Arendal s Outlook on Waste in Mountain Regions, launched at International Mountain Day (11 December 2016); Based on successes at Sustainable Summits Conference in New Zealand, we are in contact with organising committee for next conference, to be held in Chamonix (France) in 2018, and participate in its planning. 23
24 CONCLUSION IN CONCLUSION It is important to UIAA MP Commission to participate in a Meta-Network with a special focus on Tourism and the Circular Economy 24
