As MSA President, I would like to cast out an open invitation for everyone to come join the 285+ clubs who insure that the word Vacationland stays planted on Maine license plates for all twelve months. Please consider this as your personal invitation to join me, the MSA volunteers, 2200 businesses, incredibly generous landowners, and over Maine residents that will instill upon you what is arguably the Best in the East has to offer. Grab your camera, sled, and a riding partner and make it happen! In all seriousness, Maine is the best bang for the buck in the industry showcasing all avenues from tight twisties, perfectly manicured forests, literally wide open Tater fields and groomed trail summit vistas. If trailering is not your fancy, grab a southern point on ITS 83, 87 or 89 and find your destination on your sled. Our ITS system is truly our I-95 of the state taking you in all directions. Pick up your free map anywhere! Once to your hovering ground, explore a municipal or club trail and find the famed secret spots such as the Ghost Trains, B-52 Crash, or Coburn Summit. Day loops are endless! Speaking of day loops, hook up with one of the local clubs and get the inside skinny of the area but take with you this advice. Nothing says Thank You to Mainahs better than supporting their club. New people breathing fresh air in this game is what makes this sport thrive! Be one of those people! With nearly miles of trail, somewhere there is a spot you ll treasure. We ask a couple things of you. Since 95% is private land, please treat it as such, leaving it as you found it. Secondly, wildlife HAVE the right of way. Sit back, watch and enjoy their beauty! Join a club, preseason your equipment, and come play with us! We will lay the white carpet out for you! Photo by Alan Swett Snowmobile Maine For fifty years the members of the Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA) have been developing and maintaining winter trails for the enjoyment of tens of thousands of snowmobile riders. The early years bedspring drags hauled behind the family snowmobile to create a path from dooryard to dooryard have given way to sophisticated grooming equipment and hydraulic drags maintaining a 14,000+/- mile network of trails. Riders from the suburbs of southern Maine, downeast to the coastal plain, through the western and northwestern highlands and on to the farmland and deep woods of northern Maine can all enjoy the benefits of the hard work club members have contributed to the trails over the past five decades. Nearly 80,000 registered riders explored Maine s trail system last season. In the process, the activity benefited the communities and businesses throughout Maine that provide goods and services to snowmobilers as they travel from town to town. This level of trail creation and maintenance is a massive undertaking - and snowmobile club members are justifiably proud of the result. They welcome visitors who will ride safely, operate within the law and respect the land, the landowners and the club member s efforts. Welcome! Snowmobile Maine. Ride Right. Enjoy. Trail maps Several thousand miles of primary snowmobile trail are designated as Maine s Interconnected Trail System, the ITS, a network of trails providing extensive riding across the state. This system is numbered, marked, regularly maintained and inspected annually for the quality of signage and grooming by the members of the MSA Trails Committee under contract with the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry (DACF). During a good snow year riders can access this network of trails at a chosen location and snowmobile to nearly any other location in the system. The ITS is a heavily traveled network, particularly on winter weekends when sledders may head out on trips hundreds of miles long. An updated map of the ITS is produced every year by the MSA and the Snowmobile Pro gram of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conser vation & Forestry, with the input of the MSA Trails Committee. Use the ITS map to make your long distance riding plans. Trail junctions are printed on the map - the distance between the trail junctions is noted by numbers printed along the path of the trail. Adding up total mileage between junctions along a route will result in a reasonable approximation of trip length. Free copies of the map are available at the MSA office-7 Noyes Street Place in Augusta, at the Maine Snowmobile Show in the Augusta Civic Center in October and at some Maine Visitor Information Centers. Individual maps may also be ordered through the mail from the MSA for $2 S&H. (See details, page 21). An additional 10, miles of trail not designated as ITS are mapped by snowmobile clubs, Chambers of Commerce and tourism groups. These maps are usually more detailed than the statewide map, due to scale. Once you decide what areas of the state you plan to ride, you will want copies of the maps covering those trails as well. The ITS map can help you to ride across the state. The local and regional maps will be more helpful while moving within the local and regional systems, accessing towns, services etc. See pages of this publication for a listing of local and regional maps.

5 Sled Registration Maine snowmobile trails operate on a sled registration system. There is no trail pass or club membership requirement, but all snowmobilers, residents and non-resident, must register their sleds in Maine to ride in Maine. Resident registration is $45 a year (valid from July 1-June 30 of the following year). Non-resident registration is $99 for a year, $75 for 10-consecutive days or $49 for 3- consecutive days. A small agent fee will be added. Registration is processed by the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W). Non-resident registrations (and resident renewals) can be purchased online on the IF&W web site: maine.gov/ifw. They can also be purchased from one of dozens of registration agents. There is a list posted on the IF&W site. Most of the agents are in Maine; there are a few located in New Hampshire and Vermont. A portion of the registration fees are used by the Snowmobile Program of the Maine Dept. of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to administer and fulfill grants that reimburse snowmobile clubs for some of their trail maintenance expenses. A portion is credited to a fund to assist in the purchase of grooming equipment. A portion is used for law enforcement and safety education expenses of the Maine Warden Service. A portion of a Maine resident s registration goes to their municipality, in lieu of personal property tax. A number of towns contribute that money to the local snowmobile club, recognizing the benefit that snowmobile trails bring to the community. Clubs frequently will attend town meeting or budget hearings to inform their elected officials and fellow townspeople about their club s recreational and economic contributions to the community. This is just one of the reasons why local clubs are the ones who determine when conditions are right to open the trails in their area. The determination is based on factors like the amount of snow on the ground, progress of preseason trail work such as signage, and whether the ground is well frozen. In some areas landowners will require an opening date that doesn t conflict with their primary use of the land, and the clubs will of course comply. The longest grooming season is usually found in a northerly widening swath running from the elevated western mountains and foothills up through northern Maine. Great riding can be found in all areas of the state, but southern and coastal areas usually see a shorter season due to earlier warming trends and proximity to the ocean. That said, Mother Nature has surprised us at times with early cold and snow in southern Maine. The MSA posts trail condition reports at mesnow.com, updated most weekdays during the snowmobiling season. The MSA trail report focuses on groomed trail riding. The trail report page was originally offered as a courtesy to riders, and continues in that spirit. It was quite a novelty at the time it first appeared on the scene many years ago; now there are many internet sources for Trail Maps The map of Maine s Interconnected Trail System (ITS) is available free of charge at the MSA Office, 7 Noyes Street Place in Augusta; the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 284 State Street in Augusta; some Maine Visitor Information Centers, at the annual Maine Snowmobile Show and other events. The MSA reports are all voluntary observations by MSA club members and MSA supporting businesses. The page also has a number of links to other trail report web pages in the state. None of the trail reports should be considered a guarantee of conditions. Conditions can change quickly depending on weather, trail traffic and grooming schedules. If you have trouble finding an online report for the area where you like to ride, try contacting your local snowmobile club, your lodging facility or the area Chamber of Commerce. Keeping it legal The Maine Snowmobile law handbook is posted on the website of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, at maine.gov/ifw/. Give it a read. Keep a printed copy on hand for reference. Here is some general information covering a few of the questions often asked of the MSA office staff: Once you have a valid Maine resident or non-resident snowmobile registration you can legally ride on the trail system. You do not have the right to operate your snowmobile on someone else s land if permission for access has not been granted. The MSA encourages all snowmobilers to stick with the marked and groomed trails, where landowner permission has already been granted, signs posted and reasonable efforts made to keep the trail free of hazards. A driver s license is not required to operate a snowmobile. Liability insurance is not required by law, but the MSA encourages riders to have such. Riders are not required to join the MSA or a snowmobile club; such support is welcome and appreciated. There is no speed limit on the trails. Maintain reasonable and prudent speed for the current conditions, taking the weather, trail conditions, trail traffic, operator skill level and other contributing factors into account. It is against the law to operate any motorized vehicle other than a snowmobile on the snowmobile trails, unless you have the landowner s permission to do so. This is true at any time of the year, snow or no. Riding is only allowed on power lines and utility corridors if there is an authorized snowmobile trail. Those trails will be marked and appear on a snowmobile trail map. Protect access - stay on the trail. Riding on railroad track rights of way is illegal and dangerous. An exception would be an authorized trail crossing. Visit the Operation Lifesaver web site, oli.org, for info regarding rail safety initiatives. And finally, in the please do not snowmobile here category, it is against the law to ride in a cemetery, close to churches, hospitals and private homes or on public sidewalks. It is also illegal to ride across open water (water skipping). In light of terrorism, human trafficking and drug smuggling concerns, it s a poor idea to ride the border slash between the US and Canada. and for kids... Snowmobiling is a family activity in Maine, but operating a snowmobile requires some maturity, skill and strength. Many Maine children have been riding Snowmobile Registration Resident registration renewals and non-resident registrations are available for purchase online at the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife web site, Registrations are also available through dozens of registration agents. A list of agents can be found on the IF&W web site. Resident: $45/Season (7/1-6/30). Non-Resident: $99/Season (7/1-6/30), $75/10 consecutive days, $49/3-consecutive days. Questions? Contact IF&W Licensing and Registration Division, 41 State House Station, Augusta ME 04333; Trail Fund Donation Stickers Support Maine s snowmobile trails with your voluntary donation to the state trail fund. Trail fund donation stickers at three donor levels ($25, $50, $100) are available when you register your sled. The donation program, which is separate from the registration requirements, is a way to show how much you appreciate Maine snowmobile trail development and maintenance efforts.

7 graduated size snowmobiles since they could reach the handles of a mini sled. They may be experienced operators at a relatively young age, instructed in the rules and ethics of snowmobiling by parents and grandparents. Young people who have not had this experience should not be allowed to operate a snowmobile without receiving training and being closely supervised. Children are not required by law to take a safety course, but it s a very good idea. Be aware that anyone who allows a person under 18 to operate a snowmobile is jointly liable with the minor s parent or guardian for any resultant damages. Snowmobilers under the age of 18 must wear a helmet, operating or riding. Kids under 10 can t operate a snowmobile off their family s property without adult supervision (visual/voice control). Under 14 years, a child cannot cross any road maintained for travel while operating a snowmobile. An adult must cross their sled for them if the trail system crosses a roadway. Ride Right in Maine To Ride Right in Maine means that you will: Prepare well for the ride, dressing in layered clothing and a helmet. Maintain your sled, and pack basic maintenance supplies, maps and a first aid kit. Never operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The MSA endorses zero tolerance of alcohol while riding. If you want to enjoy adult beverages, please wait until you have finished riding for the day. Legally, an operator under 21 cannot have any alcohol in their system. Over 21,.08% or more is OUI. Stay to the right hand side of the trail and keep to a reasonable speed for the conditions. Maine doesn t have a speed limit on the snowmobile trails; operation is judged on a standard of reasonable, prudent speed. If you are operating at a reasonable rate of speed you will be able to stay on the right hand side of the trail, maintain full control of your sled, interact safely with other riders and come to a controlled stop within your range of visibility. If you do see speed limit signs posted out there, please observe them. If you choose to ride on a frozen body of water, be certain of ice thickness. Learn and use your trail hand signals. Yield to all grooming equipment. Groomers may be on the trail at any time of day. Leave an itinerary of your trip with someone and make every effort to let them know if plans change or you are running late. There is an itinerary form posted on the MSA website, Stop and check for traffic before crossing a road. If traveling with a group have a member stand in an area of good visibility and direct the road crossings. Ride defensively. Some people are painfully lacking in common sense. Stay alert and steer clear of them. Respect our wildlife. The packed surface of a snowmobile trail is easier for a deer, moose or other creature to navigate than is deep unbroken snow. If you encounter a wild animal traveling the trail, keep your distance and wait for them to move on, or consider another route. Do not pursue, herd or otherwise harass wildlife. If you are involved in, witness to, or made aware of a snowmobile accident resulting in injury to another person, you must make yourself known, render aid to the best of your ability and report the accident by the quickest means possible. All accidents resulting in a death or injuries requiring a physician must be reported to law enforcement by the quickest means possible. Property damage accidents ($1,000 or more) must be reported within 72 hours using a form provided by IF&W, at Safety courses Snowmobile Safety courses are offered by the Recreational Safety Office of the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife: A list of their upcoming courses is maintained by IF&W at ww.maine.gov/ifw.

8 8 Snowmobile Maine The MSA encourages all snowmobilers to take a snowmobile safety course. Contact the Recreational Safety Office at the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for information ( ) or check the schedule of courses that IF&W posts online at maine.gov/ifw/. Protect recreational access: A good deal of the work of the Maine Snowmobile Association and MSA clubs can be summed up in one word: access. Every snowmobiler can help in the effort to retain recreational access and keep trails open once they understand the tradition that allows the extensive snowmobile trail system we have in Maine. The vast majority of Maine s snowmobile trails cross private land, thanks to all of the generous landowners who allow trails to be maintained on their property. While allowing the respectful use of one s property with outdoor enthusiasts may be an uncommon situation nationally, it is a highly regarded tradition with a long and valued history in our state. Many newcomers and natives alike have difficulty understanding just how unusual, valuable and fragile is this relationship between the landowner and the land user. To protect access, all snowmobilers have some responsibilities when riding: Carry In-Carry Out. Landowners should not be put in a position of cleaning up after the people they welcome onto their land. Carry out all of your trash, including smoking refuse. Stay off plowed roads. Illegal. Even if snow has fallen on a previously plowed road that does not mean it is permissible to snowmobile on the road. There have been close calls between plow trucks and snowmobiles on camp roads. In the north woods, roads are used year round to move forest products in large trucks which can take up the full width of the road. Snowmobiles on the roads endanger the truck drivers and the sledders. Stay on the marked trail. The trails are where they are for a reason. Snowmobile clubs work with landowners to determine the best location for the trails. The placement of the trails is often designed to avoid crop land, private homes, plowed roadways or environmentally sensitive areas. Off trail riding is not welcome in most areas of the state, and in many places can seriously threaten trail access. Snowmobiling is a secondary use of private land. The land s primary use may be to grow trees, blueberries, potatoes, or other crops or to provide habitat for plants or wildlife. Although snowmobiles travel over snow, snowmobiling in unauthorized areas is still be a threat to primary uses. Riding off trail in blueberry barrens can compress the snow above the blueberry plants, damaging them to the point of little or no yield. Riding off trail in a tree farm can destroy young trees with subsequent loss of income for the land owner. When snowmobiling threatens the land s primary use, the landowner may have no choice but to deny access. Where to eat, sleep and rent a sled Snowmobiling is a big business for many communities in the state. Lodging facilities, restaurants and other local service providers anticipate the months when snowmobilers visit their area. Many services are located trailside, and if not, may have groomed access from the trail system. The advertisements in this guide and listings and links on the MSA web site, mesnow.com, contain information about a number of these welcoming businesses. Chambers of Commerce in snowmobiling areas will also be happy to assist you in your winter trip planning. There are many dining options along the trails and you can usually tell where the good food is by the number the sleds in the parking lot. If you plan to rent snowmobiles, best to reserve the machines in advance. Anticipate a minimum age for operators, and a damage deposit requirement. The rental agent should go over operation and safety guidelines before you head out. Novice sledders might consider riding with a recreational guide on their first few outings. Lodging choices may include snowmobiling resorts (lodging, dining, sled rentals and guide service available from one location), modern motels, inns, B&B s, sporting camps. Many clubs or groups prefer to rent cabins where they can prepare meals and enjoy one another s company in a private setting. Couples may enjoy intimate cottages or suites. Families with youngsters may prefer a motel with a swimming pool and on site restaurant. Those lucky enough to ride mid-week Heading over the border Everyone must stop at Customs to snowmobile into Canada. Carry your current passport, passport card or other approved documents and any required insurance and trail passes for the province that you will be visiting. Visit for more information about travel document requirements. Note the hours of operation for Customs and plan your cross-border trips conservatively. 9 can take advantage of facilities that offer special rates to fill rooms when trails are less busy. Although there are many services for snowmobilers, in some more remote areas of the state, the north woods in particular, there may be some distance between any stops for fuel and food, and sketchy cell service - so plan ahead. Remember, when you see an MSA decal on the door or a Supporting Business Certificate hanging on the wall, you are dealing with a business that supports the trails that you enjoy. The Maine Snowmobile Association The Maine Snowmobile Association is a non profit organization of 20,000+/- family members and business members, supporters of 280+/- MSA-affiliated snowmobile clubs across the state. These volunteers handle much of the trail maintenance, bridge construction, signing, grooming, equipment acquisition and landowner relations efforts that keep the Maine snowmobile trail system open. Decades ago early leaders of the MSA successfully pushed legislation to establish a statewide snowmobile registration system to assist clubs with their trail expenses. Several years ago the MSA successfully promoted legislation to credit the snowmobile trail fund with a small portion of the state gasoline tax attributable to snowmobiling activity. Although trail work is supported in part through a state grant program funded by these user pay sources, every year there is a significant shortfall of funds. The funds to cover the shortfall are raised by the clubs through everything from baked bean suppers to winter festivals. Your attendance at a club hosted fund-raising event is a great way to have fun, meet other snowmobilers and support a club. Some MSA clubs sponsor snowmobile safety courses and voluntary snowmobile trail safety checks. Clubs are also involved in local charitable activity, and the MSA Scholarship Fund, Inc., a separate but closely allied organization, has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to MSA student-members. The MSA maintains an office in the state capital of Augusta. Staff includes a membership processor, publications editor and executive director who serves as staff lobbyist, representing MSA members before the legislature, state agencies and Maine s congressional delegation. The office produces a newspaper (The Maine Snowmobiler), a web site (mesnow.com), the annual guide to Maine snowmobiling (Snowmobile Maine), the statewide map of the Interconnected Trail System and for over twenty years the annual Maine Snow mobile Show. Timely information is distributed to members through the MSA Facebook page and notification list. The MSA is supported by income from membership dues, advertising, the Maine Snowmobile Show, a golf tournament and the annual Super Raffle. Riders from across the northeast trailer up Route 201 all winter long to enjoy an extensive system of well groomed trails. Jackman offers a number of lodging and dining options, and snowmobile sales and service. From their base in the Jackman area riders can travel to The Forks/West Fork, the High Peaks Region and Moosehead. Many sledders enjoy a trip cross border to Quebec while visiting the Jackman area - carry the same documents you would if you were crossing the international border in your car, along with required trail passes and insurance. The relatively easy access to the area via I-95 contrasts with the sense of remoteness riders can find while exploring the trail system. Ride the Katahdin Loop, or travel the ungroomed perimeter road in Baxter State Park (snowmobilers must self register at the entrance and observe the 20 mph speed limit). Area trails lead west towards the Moosehead Lake region, north to Aroostook and south towards the Lincoln Lakes. Deep snow and skillful grooming keep area sledders content and towns throughout the county offer a variety of services with trail access to many businesses. Some communities designate convenient intown access routes allowing riders to make their way to the town s lodging facilities, restaurants and gas stations. Terrain in Aroostook varies from rolling fields in the east, deep woods in the west and the scenic vistas in the St John Valley to the north.
