EXPERIENCE KAINGU SAFARI LODGE Set in an area of pristine wilderness, KaingU Safari Lodge offers a magnificent safari experience in the heart of the African bush. Discovering the owner run lodge with its comfortable accommodation blending into nature is something unexpected in this remote area. The lodge was built with a lot of patience, good taste and an extraordinary sense for detail. Our personal attention to each and every guest makes you feel at home instantly. KaingU offers a unique stay for travelers wishing to get closer to the unspoiled wilderness of the real Africa, experience the warm and welcoming people of Zambia and enjoy wildlife and scenery undisturbed. The Kafue National Park does not offer a mass of animals, neither does it offer a mass of tourism. Its unmatched variety of species and that you can enjoy the wildlife almost on your own, makes this park one of the last secrets of Africa. This pristine park of over 22,000km2 is one of the last true untouched wilderness areas of this size in the world. This is a place to unwind, enjoy our chefs cuisine and be spoiled with an abundance of activities or, if you prefer, just relax and feel the heartbeat of Africa. Our Lodge is situated in the Namwala Game Management Area (GMA) on a spectacular and remote stretch of the Kafue River, approximately 400 kilometres north of the majestic Victoria Falls. The Kafue National Park, just opposite the lodge and only a 10 minute boat trip away, offers magnificent game that you can enjoy viewing from our comfortable open game drive vehicles. The Kafue River, with all its myriad of channels, rapids and islands lends itself to a range of exciting river based activities which include boat cruises, fishing, birding, canoeing and river trails.from the top of one of the large granite boulders in the Namwala GMA you will get a 360 view over nothing but nature! An historical iron smelter has been re-constructed in this area and a visit to the KaingU Trust School can be organised. Situated on a plateau 1030 meters above sea level, KaingU enjoys a year round moderate climate (coldest in July, hottest in October). You ll arrive in a small paradise. 03

EXPERIENCE OUR COMMUNITY Why come to Zambia? Because of its people! Warmth, hospitality and friendliness is in the nature of all Zambian tribes of which there are 72 in the country. The area around Kaingu Lodge has long been inhabited by the Ila-people, good grazing land at the Kafue Flats have also attracted many Tonga (before the creation of the Itezhi Tezhi dam, the Ila-Tonga were the richest pastoralists in Africa!). Chief of the area is Chief Kaingu (hence the name of our lodge) and he is a Lozi originally. All no problem, since the motto of the first President Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda, was: "One Zambia, One Nation". And so it is not surprising that hospitality and a warm welcome is integral to Zambian culture The first small, very traditional one-family-villages are located about 15km south of the Lodge, our community school is reachable in about 1 hour drive. The majority of our employees are from the local area and are trained in house. Experience the hospitality of the Ila, Lozi, Kaonde, Luvale and Tonga with us! Twalumba (Ila, Tonga) Twasanta (Kaonde) Litumezi (Lozi) Tunasakwila (Luvale) Thank you! 04

UP DATES GAME CHANGER IN THE KAFUE NP New management, new access, new guiding, new focus, new food, new staff, new developments, new game viewing vehicle, new boat. KaingU Safari Lodge shines in a new light. Since 2012/13 the new management team, Lynda, Rick, Julia & Gil, has taken the lodge and guest experience to another level. The new spinal road in the Kafue NP allows guests a pleasantly smooth trip, and after crossing the Kafue River by boat, you will arrive after just 4 hours drive from Lusaka or 50 minutes from Chunga airfield. Our new and experienced Lead Field Guide Isaac, together with Kaley, provide an excellent safari experience. SPINAL ROAD The idea of reconstructing the Spinal road was to open up a long tourist route all the way from Livingstone to the copperbelt. Expanding the accessibility of the Kafue National Park is vital to its existence and development, to manage it and to protect it. As the middle section of this great road was completed at the beginning of 2013, KaingU Lodge is now in the unique position to expand its activities to an area of the Kafue National Park that for many years has been completely inaccessible. FAMILY DESTINATION Share the magic of KaingU with your kids! At KaingU your whole family is welcome and specialized activities guarantee that young adventurers have a great time. To ensure that every guest has a wonderful experience with us, we have reserved suitable dates during the season for families (and extended families) only. So there are no worries about disturbances and the day s programmes can be custom-tailored to suit all interests. There are many activities that the whole family can take part in but also exclusive activities for children and youngsters to do while their parents can enjoy a siesta or go for a long game drive. 05

UP DATES CANOEING ON THE KAFUE RIVER A dream has come true. It has taken two years of exploring all the water channels, rocks and rapids of over 50km of the Kafue River which are mainly not accessible by conventional boats, planning routes and trails with respect to scenery, water level changes over the season and even hippo family movements. In Partnership with Mawimbi Canoe Trails, KaingU guests can now enjoy an unforgettable experience on the Kafue River. Specialist guides will take you through truly magnificent areas that one can only reach by inflatable canoes. This activity must be booked in advance before arrival. KAINGU EXPANSION KaingU Safari Lodge will extend its accommodation from 12 to 16 beds in This will consolidate our position in the international market and give us more flexibility to tailor make packages. The two new guest units will face the river and offer all the standards of our existing tented chalets. ANTI POACHING Poaching is still one of the Kafue NP s major challenges. Its enormous size, limited accessibility and little funding are the stumbling blocks. At the beginning of 2013 all lodge operators of the area met to discuss the way forward. With Game Rangers International (GRI) as the implementing body carrying out the aims of the Kafue Conservation Society capable organisations have formed and every operator has agreed to raise funds by an additional bednight levy of 5USD. This levy supports directly the work of two specialist antipoaching teams so guests can be assured of direct link between their stay and poaching reduction. During 2013 GRI set up their camp at the center of the park and at the end of the year leftover funds of a former Kafue Lion Project could be secured. KaingU continues to contribute through their guest bed night levy. At the moment 2 Patrol Teams with 20 rangers each are supporting the Anti-poaching work of the Zambian Wildlife Authority. (One patrol team costs about USD 7000 per month). 06

ACCOMMODATION BE A GUEST AT KAINGU SAFARI LODGE KaingU offers guest accommodation both at the Lodge and at three private and individual campsites, both in the Namwala GMA, facing the river and directly opposite the Kafue National Park, KAINGU LODGE 4 Chalets* (2x double, 2x twin; all en-suite) 1 Family house (1x room double, 1x room twin; all en-suite; extra beds available) *soon to be 6 Set on raised individual private wooden decks, each overlooking the Kafue River, KaingU Safari Lodge comprises 4 double Meru-style tents with en-suite bathrooms, indoor showers and an open-air shower. The Honeymoon-tent has an additional outside bath. Every tent is additionally roofed with thatch to provide additional cooling and further blend into nature. Our Finfoot family house consists of 2 bedrooms (one queen, one twin), 2 en-suite bathrooms plus outside shower and a central living area opening onto a private deck overlooking the river. It s a perfect spot for a couple with children, or a small group of friends All accommodation has gauze screen entrances/doors and windows and mosquito netting over the beds. The two bedside lights and bathroom light are solar powered as are the other lodge facilities. Plugs can be found in the central area of the lodge for charging of electronic devices. Water is heated by individual wood boilers. A flask with filtered drinking water is provided and filtered water is always available. Bottled water is also available from the bar, but for ecological reasons we encourage the use of re-usable bottles and filtration. The focal point of the Lodge is the thatched central area (or Boma ) with a lounge, dining area and bar. Attached to it is a redwood deck built over the river and under the forest canopy. This area provides guests with a beautiful and serene setting for dining, sundowners or just relaxing with a book and has an all-day tea & coffee station. At night a fire is lit in the purpose-built pit on the deck. Solar-lit paths provide easy access between the chalets and the central area. 07

ACCOMMODATION KAINGU PRIVATE CAMPSITES 3 sites at the rapids, for only one group of guests with max. 2 cars and 6 people each 1 site in the bush, for groups with max. 4 cars and 8 people Separate to the lodge but within walking distance are three beautifully appointed grassy campsites by the rapids. Each site has its own ablution block with cold and hot running water, a kitchen sink, fire pits for cooking and a thatched sheltered area which provides protection against sun and rain. Groups can also be accommodated in a larger bush camp site with its own separate facilities. Activities and meals and laundry can be organised through the lodge, but lodge facilities are not part of the campsite. KAINGU BUSH CAMP The idea of the KaingU Bush Camp is to provide guests with accommodation up to KaingU standards at a wonderful spot inside the Kafue National Park. As the name 'bush camp' indicates, the accommodation will be more basic than at KaingU Lodge but include all its comfort and services. Here guests can be close to the wildlife and nature. Three tents with ajoining open air bathrooms will provide accommodation for a maximum of six guests. A tented lounge area and dining area under the canopy of a large Pod Mahognay tree offers a wonderful view. The emphasis is on solitude and privacy and the fact that it is a true wilderness with no one for miles. The KaingU Bush Camp can also be booked as a complete private camp on a selfcatering base. 08

ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES AT KAINGU SAFARI LODGE Our Lodge is located on a stunningly beautiful and unique section of the Kafue River, providing the perfect backdrop for a range of guided activities to view wild animals, birds, river and landscape as well as to gain an understanding of the broader ecology of our area: Driving Safaris Walking Safaris River cruises Fishing Island picnics WELCOME TO THE KAFUE NATIONAL PARK Thanks to the reconstruction of the Spinal Road KaingU Lodge is now in the position to expand its activities to an area of the Kafue National Park that for many years has been completely inaccessible. We now offer driving and walking safaris in the National Park. Our open game drive vehicle is brand new, has comfortable bucket seats, a removable roof and is rattle free. Activities can be tailored to the specific interest of each guest. RIVER OF BOULDERS AND ISLANDS KaingU Safari Lodge is known to be located at the most stunning section of the Kafue River. At KaingU the wide and steady flowing river stretches out and flows around countless granite boulders, rapids, grassy sandbanks and islands, some so big that even leopards live on them. Enjoy this beautiful river-landscape on a comfortable boat cruise, ideal for birding as well as seeing hippos, crocodiles, bathing elephants or drinking leopards. For the more adventurous a trip in a rubber duck boat can be taken through the rapids. Be pleasantly surprised by a bush breakfast set up on an island or a lantern-lit dinner by the river when coming back from an activity. Interact with the staff while the food is prepared and get a taste of the local cuisine. Traditional songs accompanied by dancing are a highlight of these evenings. 09

ACTIVITIES EXPERIENCE THE VASTNESS OF ZAMBIA The large granite boulders which can be found around the lodge add a wonderful feature to our safari nature walks. Here one can experience the vastness of Zambia and the Park. Mpamba Rock is one of our favourite rocks for watching a glorious African sunset. Adventurous people can even camp out and fall asleep while stargazing from here or another large outcrop known as Poachers Rock. Escorts on night watch and a safety fire will be provided! BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO CANOE ON THE KAFUE In Partnership with Mawimbi Canoe Trails, KaingU guests can now enjoy an unforgettable experience on the Kafue River. Specialist guides will take you through truly magnificent areas that one can only reach by inflatable canoes. Canoe trails for ½ day up to 3 days are available. Trails start north of the Lodge, travel with the current and finish where the river opens into large flood plains south of us. The scenery is spectacular and varied and the pace of the trail can be set to suit individually. Pods of hippos, crocodiles and elephant are regularly encountered as well as a wide variety of bird-life and antelope species. Guests are picked up and driven back to the Lodge at the end of the trail. ITUMBI COMMUNITY SCHOOL Due the Lodge s sponsorship in the local school, cultural trips to the community school can be arranged. The interaction with the students gives a unique insight into Zambian life and the challenges and joys that these young people face. Many of our guests are quite moved by the experience and the opportunity exists to sponsor some of the school s needs. 10

ACTIVITIES CHILDREN S ACTIVITIES Many activities can be done with the whole family but we also offer exclusive activities for children and youngsters. On our nature walks the whole family can explore the untamed wilderness around us and experience the vastness of Zambia. Our specialist guides will explain how to read the spoor of animals, identify insects and birds and explain which plants are useful for survival in the bush. Boat cruises on our magnificent part of the Kafue River are a pleasure for every age with the opportunity for fishing and island exploration. In the hotter months we visit our natural swimming pool in the rapids near camp and refreshment can be found safely in the natural pools. Kids and youngsters can get involved with our blacksmith making spears and arrowheads in his traditional iron forge. They can learn how to make a rope of a tree-fibre and when bows and arrows are completed practice their shooting skills by protecting our straw antelopes from poachers. Our chefs are delighted to have hands on assistance in baking fresh hippo-rolls or making dough for stick bread baked around the fire pit in the evening. Listening and sharing stories around the camp-fire lets everyone forget the absence of electrical gadgets and when it gets too late for the youngest an evening child care will be arranged. Trips to our local school can be arranged where children can meet their counterparts and share experiences in the classroom and the playground. Children s Activities include: tracking, spoor identification, bow & arrow making, archery, stargazing, fishing, entomology, boating, bread making, African storytelling & drumming, rope making and bush skills, excursions to the local school. All activities have a focus on conservation and sustainable use of our resources. Families find comfortable accommodation in our Finfoot Family House and extra beds can be added to our Tented Chalets. 11

Social Responsibility LOCAL The Lodge hires local labour wherever possible and provides them with the necessary training. All materials such as thatch, poles, road maintenance material are sourced from the local communities, who are paid accordingly in an effort to recognize the value of these resources. COMMUNITY TRUST In addition a levy of $10 per lodging guest plus $3 per camping guest is paid to our Community Trust (started by the founders of KaingU Lodge). This money is used on projects which benefit the local community and also the Park itself, with antipoaching activities and further developments of the community school being high on the agenda. The Lodge, together with the Community Trust, decides how best to apply the funds. ITUMBI COMMUNITY SCHOOL On a visit to the village in 2006 the KaingU Safari Lodge guests saw the poor condition of the traditionally built local school. Back home in the Netherlands they set up the Kaingu Community Foundation and started a big donation campaign. This donation and the local support of KaingU Safari Lodge made it possible to build a new school with three class rooms. Currently the Itumbi Community School provides education for over 250 children of the area. Ongoing support from KaingU lodge is also provided by paying two teacher s salaries and through charitable donations by guests of the lodge, providing books, pens and other necessities. 12

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY KaingU Safari Lodge has been designed and built to minimize the impact on the local environment. Maximum use has been made of existing trees, rocky outcrops and topographical features to blend in with its surroundings and reduce any impact on the unique landscape. The Lodge is entirely powered by solar energy, with power, lighting and water reticulation all powered by solar panels. The lodge has an installed capacity of over 6,000 watts of solar power generation! Few lodges can in reality claim as low a carbon footprint as KaingU. As much lighting is low powered LED as is possible, fridges are highly efficient and designed for rural Africa with thicker than normal insulation and highly efficient compressors. Even our main guest boats are quiet and river-friendly modern four stroke engines. As much as possible KaingU purchases food products organically and sustainably grown in Zambia and by the IT S WILD organisation. While doing so we are supporting small scale conservation-based agriculture in the rural areas of Zambia and contribute directly to the conservation of Zambia s wildlife and ecosystems while reducing poverty and hunger. All organic waste is composted and used for the Lodge s vegetable garden. Hard waste is collected and recycled wherever possible, and what cannot be otherwise recycled is returned to Lusaka for disposal. The Lodge works closely with ZAWA and private game protection organisations to protect the wildlife and catch-andrelease is encouraged with all fishing activities. KaingU Lodge are proud to contribute, promote and be active in the following organizations: Game Rangers International Kafue Park Operators Association The Kafue Trust The Kafue Conservation Society 13

A. Directions from Lusaka via the new Spinal Road: Travelling time: about 4 hours. This is smoothest option but remember your car is on the other side of the river so you cannot use this route with a roof tent! With the opening of the Spinal Road in the NP guests can also take this route and leave their vehicle in our car park in the Park and be transferred across the river by boat to the Lodge. This option needs to be co-ordinated with the Lodge, and Park fees will apply on entrance and exit (currently payable to the lodge) Kindly note that in the interim you will not find the Spinal Road on most maps or Tracks 4 Africa. Follow the above directions on the Mumbwa Rd (M9), past the Itezhi Tezhi turnoff and continue for a further 60km, past Mukambi Lodge and over the Hook Bridge, which crosses over the Kafue River. Continue 6.3km on from this bridge to the second turnoff to Chunga, which is signposted as Chunga 21km Turn left at this turnoff towards Chunga and travel on the gravel road for 14.3km to a major turnoff. Here you will see a large green sign marked Spianl Road, Ngoma 166km, Musa Gate 170km Take the road to the right marked as above (Ngoma & Musa) to proceed south into the Park. If you find yourself at Chunga (ZAWA Scout Post), turn around and head back the way you came and turn left at the turnoff. Travel 32.7km down this road (known as the Spinal Road) to the Kaingu sign on the left (GPS: S E ). Turn left off the road at the sign for Kaingu Safari Lodge and drive along the track for 700m to the carpark. You will see our white Toyota(s) and the friendly face of one of our guides, who will transfer you by boat across to the Lodge. This boat trip takes minutes and is free of charge. Travelling time: about 4 hours. Please note: the speed limit in the National Park is 40km/hr, the road is not well signposted yet and there are sudden bends and drifts that can catch the unwary or those travelling too fast. There have already been a few minor accidents on the new road this year. B. Directions from Lusaka via the Itezhi Tezhi Road: Travelling time about 5 ½ to 6 hours Make sure to refuel before you leave Lusaka, as the only possibilities to re-fuel are at Nangoma Mission or Mumbwa. And even then fuel availability is not always guaranteed. From Lumumba Road in the Lusaka CBD, take the Great West Road towards Mongu this is the Mumbwa Road (M9). 151km from Lusaka, you reach the Mumbwa turn-off. If necessary, go into the town to refuel, otherwise bypass it and continue on the M9. A further 30km on you will pass through the Nalusanga Gate at the entrance of the Kafue National Park. At the 220km mark of the M9 (GPS: S E ) turn left (south) onto the Itezhi-Tezhi road. After ±50km on this road, you reach the ZAWA Mweengwa Wildlife Check Point (GPS: S E ). 3km further on from this point (GPS: S E ) turn right (West) at the KaingU Lodge/Puku Pans signs. Travel 25km along a bush track to the next KaingU Lodge sign (GPS: S E ) and turn left (South). Continue on for ±18km, crossing the Mweengwa Pole Bridge and follow the signs into the KaingU Lodge camp. It is recommended not to travel faster than 30-35km per hour on these bush tracks due to rocks and stumps in places close to the edge of the road. At the tsetse control point stop for 5 minutes. Then spray under the wheel arches of your vehicle in short bursts with the spray can provided. Travelling time about 5 ½ to 6 hours

C. Self-drive directions from Livingstone Travelling time about 12 hours (make a break at Nanzhila, Choma or Itezhi Tezhi) Do not attempt without lots of fuel, a high clearance 4 4 with low range and a sense of adventure and humour! From Livingstone, take the T1 towards Lusaka. At Kalomo town (124km) (GPS: S E ) turn northwards towards the Dundumwense entrance gate of the Kafue National Park. This is ±70km from Kalomo. Note!! Re-fuel at Kalomo as this is the last reliable fuel stop! From Dundumwenzi, take the road to Ngoma, the southern HQ of the Kafue National Park. You will travel through the Nanzhila Plains along the Cordon Road (further west) or the Kalenje Road (eastern track) depending on the season and road conditions. Ask for information on specific directions and conditions at the entrance gate to the Park. Three Options: C 1) from Ngoma via Itezhi-Tezhi road From Ngoma, proceed to Itezhi-Tezhi, passing the Musungwa and New Kalala Lodges enroute (±22km). From Itezhi-Tezhi, travel north for ±60km to the Kaingu Safari Lodge sign (GPS: S E ) and turn left (west) onto the bush track. Proceed to the next KaingU Lodge sign ±25km further on (GPS: S E ) and turn left (south). Continue on for ±18km, crossing the Mweengwa Pole Bridge and follow the signs into the KaingU Safari Lodge camp. Travelling time: about 8 hours depending on current road conditions. C2) from Ngoma via Itezhi-Tezhi and the River Road For 4 4 s only and only in the dry season (May to November) is this an alternative route through the villages and bush leading directly to the KaingU Lodge camp. From Ngoma, proceed to Itezhi-Tezhi, passing the Musungwa and New Kalala Lodges enroute (±22km). From Itezhi-Tezhi travel ±10km to Kanzwa; a village comprising a couple of shops on the roadside. ±3km past Kanzwa, turn left (West) at the Bushinga School/KaingU Lodge signs (GPS: S E ). Follow the most well used track and the KaingU Lodge signs for ±45km to KaingU Safari Lodge, asking for directions en-route. Note: tracks slightly change over the season, do not attempt this route without Tracks 4 Africa (GPS map) to which you can refer to. Have fun!! C3) from Ngoma via the Spinal Road to KaingU harbour in the Kafue National Attention: You will arrive about 500 meter north and on the opposite side of the river to our Lodge; there is no pontoon but you can park your car safely at our car park at the harbour (therefore it is not possible to use this route if you are coming to our private camp-site with a roof top tent and lots of camping equipment); kindly note that in the interim you will not find the Spinal Road on most maps or Tracks 4 Africa. before taking this route you have to contact us with an estimated time of arrival so we arrange your pick up by boat; the ETA must not be after 5pm as boating in the dark is not advisable. From Ngoma it is about 130km to our turn off (GPS S ; E) and car park From Ngoma, proceed North towards Lake Itezhi Tezhi Follow the road heading West around the lake, passing the sign for Hippo Camp, Follow the road heading north until you have reached our turn off on your right; there is a little sign for Kaingu; Turn right and follow the bushtrack for 700 meter to our carpark & harbour (GPS S ; E) where you will meet our guide and cross to the lodge by boat

D. Self-drive directions from Choma through Namwala Attention: For 4x4s with high clearance only and only in the dry season (June- October); do not attempt this route without Tracks 4 Africa (GPS map); involves a pontoon crossing; follow the road signs from Choma to Namwala; this road is tarred and in good condition after this you have to cover a heavily washed out track to the pontoon (±10km; about 1hour drive); from the pontoon use the most used track heading West to Itezhi Tezhi town contine to Kaingu via the Itezhi Tezhi Road or the River Road or via the Spinal Roa
