NBYC Members, We have enjoyed another great month here at the New Bern Yacht Club with social events, boating and the continued celebration of the club's 25th Anniversary. The month of May started with a Cinco de Mayo party hosted by the Comers and Todds featuring wonderful south of the border dining and a live broadcast of the Kentucky Derby. Our annual Spring Clean Up had 30 Members maintaining the property over a two day period with outstanding results. Thanks to all who participated under the guidance of Vice Commodore Bill McHale. A very special NBYC 25th Anniversary Party was enjoyed by nearly a hundred participants that included 26 former Members for an afternoon of camaraderie, celebration and an excellent dinner! It really was a memorable event and our appreciation goes out to Sarah Kerner, Paula Hartman and Jacqueline Douglas for organizing this great celebration of the club's history. As the 25th Anniversary Celebration continues throughout the year we ask you to share your stories, photographs and memories of the club's history, which will be documented in a book to be produced by year's end. Please share your NBYC history to the Club Historian, Warren Lloyd, or the History Book Editor Jule Burke. Let's go boating! We have June cruises to the Ocracoke Music Festival on June 1-3, Manteo on June 3-6, and the Oriental Croakerfest on June 29-July 1. Please check the NBYC website for further details or contact Jack Fleming, Rear Commodore. And locally, don't forget our annual July 4th Party held at the club. You just never know when a Club Member gets the inspiration or weather window to boat somewhere fun and invite others to join in! Captain a Flash Cruise and share your good times on the water by sending out a SeaWord Extra for your day trip to somewhere unique. Thanks to everyone for your creativity and enthusiasm to provide a full schedule of social events, boating activities and help to manage a successful organization. Is this a great club or what! -Tim Broderick Commodore 671-2134 brodericknbnc@yahoo.com
2018 Cruising We re entering the peak cruising season with attendance at the Ocracoke Music Festival followed by Manteo and The Lost Colony play. We did have a scare this past week when it was learned that the Trent River Railroad bridge was broken and stuck in the closed position. How are all the club boats moored upriver of the bridge and scheduled to head for Ocracoke and Manteo going to make it? Fortunately, the Railroad has fixed the problem, albeit after at first ordering the wrong repair part. Then June 29 th to July 2 nd is the Croakerfest, in Oriental, always a good time. There are already five boats with slip reservations for that event. For you Land Yachters keep in mind that the Croakerfest has lots to hold your attention. We ll be rescheduling the International Wine Raft Up that had to be canceled due to weather in June. Look for a flier in the next couple of weeks. Have you looked at the docks lately? A brand new water system, the electrical system brought up to snuff, the decks all stained and deck boards replaced where necessary. With the exception of a couple of hours of Master Electrician support, all accomplished by NBYC members. On the part of the club I would like to say many thanks to Bill McHale for his efforts in getting the docks to where they are today. It seems he is regularly putting in sixty hour weeks. He must be younger than me. Here s to great boating. -Jack Fleming, Rear Commodore 633-0309 eilcmhor@gmail.com Help plan the 2018 NBYC Calendar! Do you have an idea? Shipmates Information Directory Updates If you are aware of an update to the directory, please let Jim Smithwick know. Email is much better than meeting at Lowe s or Harris Teeter, and even better than a phone call, but any form of communication is better than ignoring it. Misplaced your directory? It is also available online at newbernyachclub.com in the Members Only tab. -Jim Smithwick (919) 244-4769 A card was sent to Doug Baker who had a brief stay in the hospital. If you know a member who is, or recently has been, sick, had an operation, or is just under the weather, or lost a family member, please contact the Sunshine Committee. -Camille Hoffman 672-1684 camhoff1@gmail.com Treasurer s Report The Treasurer s Report may be viewed on eseaword in the members only section after Board acceptance. Board Meeting Minutes If you would like a copy of the Board Meeting Minutes, it may be obtained (after Board acceptance) by emailing the Secretary or by viewing on eseaword. Ship s Store We are very excited about the happenings for the Ship's Store. A small brochure is being made by New Bern Sporting Goods of items commonly purchased over the past years. A sample of each item will be at the club with color options and prices. There is now a variety of logos from which to choose as well as fonts for embroidering; samples of those will also be available for you to see. As always, any items from the Sporting Goods catalog may be ordered. Continued items for purchase from the store: our stainless steel mug, glassware, Tervis glasses, burgees, and note cards. Please let me know if I can help you find a special item or gift. -Sue Marsh 571-5286 sue1946@hotmail.com
