Port Stockton Sayings-Bulletin The monthly bulletin of Port Stockton Branch 46 of Sons In Retirement, a California non-profit corporation chartered July 23, 1974. NEXT MEETING, MAY 21, 2015 Thursday at 12 noon Big Sir Greeting - MAY, 2015 According to my calendar, May has three important days: Mother s Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. Our family is having the entire tribe over for Mother s Day, and on Memorial Day we will visit several cemeteries in the area. Memorial Day is also another day to honor those who have given their lives for our country, and on Armed Forces Day we thank our military members for their patriotic support of our country. Whoops! There s one more important day in May: Romeo-4 will take place at Angelina s at noon on May 28. Read the information further on in this bulletin. Branch 46 is currently recruiting on two fronts; the first is the task of filling our slate of officers and directors for 2016, and the second being the recruitment of new members. Both activities are going well. There should be an announcement of the 2016 nominees coming in the near future. For the new member recruitment we are essentially on track to reach our goal of 11 new members or 10% by the end of the year. At this time, we have 3 new members with one more expected next month. I m happy to report that we have a healthy branch, but to continue on in this status we will definitely need new members. Remember those wallet cards we passed out at the January luncheon? If you know or meet someone you think would be remotely interested in joining our branch, please write your name and phone number on the card and give it to him. Then come and see me for another card. Also, for those of you who participate in any of our three major activities, bridge, bowling, and golf, I m sure you interface with someone who you could invite as a luncheon guest. Remember, you get a free luncheon if he becomes a member. Well worth the effort! Dr. Zeiter, our May speaker, has actually climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa along with 8 other Stocktonians, and this adventure will be the subject of his presentation. Mt. Kilimanjaro and some of the items Dr. Zeiter will discuss are covered further on in this bulletin. Finally, if you haven t already, don t forget to sign up for our June picnic. Tickets are $17.00 per person and will be on sale at the May luncheon. We guarantee a very relaxing afternoon at Micke Grove, featuring barbecued Tri Tips, Bingo, a golf chipping contest and lots more neat stuff. See you there! DON T MISS OUR MAY MEETING!! OUR SPEAKER HAS CLIMBED MT. KILIMANJARO! Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai 'Ngaje Ngai', the House of God. Close to the western summit there is a dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude. Ernest Hemingway. The Snows of Kilimanjaro All of us are very familiar with the mountain that looms up to the west of Stockton Mt. Diablo. Picture if you can the next time you look at Mt. Diablo as 5 - yes 5 times its height. Our May speaker, Dr. John Zeiter, will be presenting his adventure in climbing to the summit of the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro 19,341 feet 5 times the height of Mt. Diablo, 3849 ft. Kilimanjaro has 5 distinct climate zones. It s made up of 3 dormant volcanos. Due to its extreme height climbers risk Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The success rate for reaching the summit is around 50 percent. Why?? Because of AMS. Dr. Zeiter and 8 other Stocktonians (including one female) risked the climb. How many made it to the summit? How many days did it take? How did they nourish themselves, drink, eat, and go to the bathroom? (No porta- potties on the mountain) What kind of equipment did they need? These are many of the questions Dr. Zeiter will answer and anymore you may ask. By the way, he has filmed portions of the climb and will show these on our screen along with his narration. See you at the May meeting. Editor s Note: Note the difference between Hemmingway s altitude and the current reported height. Most agree that the discrepancy is due to technological advances in measurement. APRIL LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS George Lerner and Wally Wallick John Sharpe Port of Stockton Homeland Security New (relatively) member Thank you, George and Wallace, for an excellent presentation and slide show. AND WELCOME TO BRANCH 46, JOHN!!
