1 Port Stockton Sayings Bulletin The monthly bulletin of Port Stockton Branch 46 of Sons In Retirement, a California non-profit corporation chartered July 23, NEXT MEETING LADIES DAY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON DECEMBER 10, 2015 Thursday at 12 Noon Merry Christmas from Your Big Sir When I was growing up in Stockton, the standard gifts for kids were tricycles, Lincoln Logs, Erector Sets and then a bicycle later on. Would you believe that my Erector Set came with an electric motor that plugged into a 110 v AC outlet. I think I was 5 years old at the time. Christmas is much safer nowadays with ipads and computer games. After Christmas, my Cub Scout Den would collect Christmas trees and put them on a truck which would haul them to some place near downtown for a big weenie roast. They gave prizes to whoever collected the most. One Christmas, all the trees our Den collected were stored in my backyard for the truck pick up the next day. But in the morning they were all gone. Someone swiped them during the night. So much for Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, etc,. As you can see above, Santa is playing it cool and taking the little woman to the Branch 46 Christmas Luncheon. If you haven t signed up yet, it s still not too late. You can pay at the door, but please give either Ron Korock or me a call so we can tell the cook you re coming. Ron Korock, our membership chairman, says our membership at the end of the year will be 109 compared to 110 at the start of the year. This is great since we lost a lot of members due to attrition (transfers and one member passing away). There s even a possibility that we will reach 110 again from a transfer into the branch. This good news is mainly due to our recruiting efforts. During the year, we have brought in 8 new members. So hats off to all the recruiters! We re talking about a lot of free lunches here. The 9 hole golf group plays every Tuesday at Swenson Executive Course. Players should arrive by 8:30 a.m. to get their tee times. In the winter months we play on an informal basis. Come and join us. We will be finalizing the schedule for next year and will have it in the next bulletin. I can tell you that the first tournament will be February 17 th at Lockford Springs, and the second one will be on February 26 at Van Buskirk. We now have committee of 4 putting on the tournaments: John Stevens is running 2, Bill Noel is running 2, Bob Cossey is running 2 and I will run 3. Have a great holiday. See you in February. 4 CHRISTMAS LADIES DAY LUNCHEON December 10, 2015 Elkhorn It s still not to late to come to the luncheon. You can pay at the door. But please let us know beforehand. Call Jack Lamberty or Ron Korock CHRISTMAS PARTY GIFT EXCHANGE Branch 46 has a tradition of exchanging gifts at our annual Christmas party which will be held at Elkhorn Country Club on December 10. The gifts will be distributed by raffle along with the BIG R activity. Each donor will receive a free ticket for the drawing. If you or your wife or significant other have a hobby or skill for making items that could be donated, that s great. If you don t have a hobby, purchased items may be donated. We ask that every couple attending the party bring an item to assure enough gifts for everyone to take one home. Tables will be set up to receive your gift as you arrive on December 10. Note!! There have been questions about the number of gifts to bring. It s up to you. Couples can bring two gifts and take two home. Or they can bring one gift and take one home. The grand scheme is for everyone who donates to take something home.

7 NOVEMBER LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS Brandy Thurman San Joaquin County Office of Education Lonny Cox San Joaquin County Truancy Division Brandy Thurman and Lonny Cox presented a brief overview of the San Joaquin County Office of Education. Both are administrators for the County but they supervise different areas. Brandy spoke about the "One" schools and their emphasis on individualized instruction. She also talked about Charter Schools which give parents the opportunity to select a particular curriculum for their children. Her presentation included a description of education in Juvenile Hall which sparked a series of audience questions on that subject. Part of Lonnie Cox s duties include supervision of the Truancy Division and he covered this aspect of the educational process and also teamed with Brandy in responses to questions that came within his area of expertise. The entire presentation was well received by the audience. Clarence Strobel USMC Cliff Wilburn US Army Combat Veteran Combat Veteran Quilt of Honor Recipient Quilt of Honor Recipient A second highlight of the November Luncheon was the presentation of Quilts of Honor to Combat Veterans Clarence Strobel and Cliff Wilburn. Although the official Quilt Lady, Gail Belmont, was not present for the presentations, the task was performed by Little Sir Paul Wagner. As an interesting sidelight, Dave Derksen, who received a quilt during the August luncheon, received a second quilt in September at his unit s military reunion in Branson, Mo.
