Can you smell it? No, not that, SPRING! While it s only February, the days are getting longer, the temps are rising, and motorcycle shows are happening. How many more signs do you need? As with a lot of things we put away for the winter, we kinda lose our edge when we get back to spring. I know the first time I use the mower in the spring, I m not nearly efficient as I am in late fall. Not being on my game while mowing is not a big deal (tell that to the trees I hit!) but losing our edge on our trusty steads is another thing. Out on the road we don t have the luxury of not being on our A-Game. It s even worse for us because the cagers have gotten used to us not being around for a few months and they don t have their minds on the lookout for two-wheelers. BUT ALL IS NOT LOST! That s right, GWRRA has us covered. For the second year in a row, we have a full slate of riding courses being offered this spring. Two wheels or three, it doesn t matter. We ve got you covered. There s no better way to get yourself prepared for the new riding season that to take a Saturday to get your edge back. Give yourself that one day to get you back to thinking about riding, honing your safety strategies, and spending some quality time on the range getting your mo-jo back. It s the best investment in time and money you can make. Since last month, we ve been told Spring Wing Warm Up (SWWU) is going to be held in Evansville this year. Vanderburgh 4-H Center is the location and 11-12 May are the dates. There will be a dinner ride on Thursday the 10 but the actual rally starts on Friday. Chapter O is the host chapter and they ve told us the riding down SW is the best in the state. I m looking forward to finding out! We ve also just found out the Spring District Meeting is scheduled for March 24. The meeting is open to ALL MEMBERS. It will be held at Wanamaker Lions Club, 8822 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis. Finally, DON T FORGET, our D2 ride planning meeting is March 17 at the new New Haven Parks and Rec building. This is the time to get together and build a 2018 riding season full of great rides, destinations, and overnight trips. Please think about participating and contributing to this year s riding activities. Until next time.rick & Debbie GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATON CHAPTER D2 FORT WAYNE, IN MARCH 2018 PAGE 2

ROB & NATALIE RIDER Hi D-2 Chapter!! It has been a very slow start to the 2018 riding season. Rain, Floods, Wind and Cold have pretty much kept us house bound. Thanks to a pop-up Dinner Ride at Bob s in Woodburn, we got out and had a Great time with our D-2 Friends!! Thanks Rick for requesting this Dinner Ride!!! It was Fun and Needed!! Just a reminder, any D-2 Member can request a pop-up Dinner Ride at Anytime!!! Now Heads Up Everyone!!! We need to go to the Ride Schedule Meeting on March 17 th at 5:00pm. This will be at the New Haven Park Department located at 7500 State Road 930 East. (Right Behind McDonalds in New Haven!!) Hope to see you all there!!! You all need to get those bikes ready, and the wet and cold gear staged, for that decent day to ride is on the horizon!! Rob Rider-Ride Coordinator75 Lists of counties & points of interest on pages 10 and 11 of this newsletter. 92 COUNTIES CHALLENGE The 92 COUNTIES CHALLENGE is to get an individual member, not a chapter, to tour as many counties as possible in Indiana between April 1 and October 31, 2018. The person needs to verify their presence at the POINTS OF INTEREST by keeping a photo of them or their bike/car at the designated location. The photos will only be requested for verification from the two winners at the end of the contest. A couple can participate as individuals, each with their own sheet. The POINTS OF INTEREST form is provided with a column on the left side for riders to keep record of the date they were at the destination. A $100 prize will be given to one individual who completes the challenge or who visits the most locations. In case of a tie in the most locations visited, a drawing will be conducted to choose the one winner of the $100. A second place prize of $25 will be given to an individual who is in a drawing of all the riders who visited a minimum of sixty of the designated locations. The person who has 60 or more sites and was declared the winner, will not be eligible for the second-place drawing. The POINTS OF INTEREST are locations in each county to give the rider a destination. The address for many of the POINTS is provided while the rider will have to do some research to develop an exact route to others. The rider does not have to go into a location, purchase admission ticket, eat there, or do anything other than actually visit the location. We encourage riders to take advantage of the fact they are visiting some interesting locations but being at the location is the only factor considered in this challenge. Photos and verification of location visits will only have to be submitted by the winner of the $100 and the second place winner of the $25 to verify they were actually eligible to be declared winners. In order to determine who should be included in consideration for first place and included in the drawing, riders can scan their filled out POINTS OF INTEREST sheets, with dates they visited filled in, to mocpath@comcast.net OR they can mail the forms to Lonny Hunter, 1123 E 650 S, Markleville, IN 46056. For questions regarding the challenge, feel free to call or contact: Lonny Hunter 765-425-5213 mocpath@comcast.net GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER D2 FORT WAYNE, IN MARCH 2018 PAGE 3

Hello Fellow Hoosier Gold Wingers! We re Rick and Debbie Warmels and we were introduced as YOUR new District Educators at Winter Rendezvous. We re excited to follow the tremendous efforts of Chuck and Chris Jacobs in keeping the Fun, Safety, and Knowledge in Indiana Rider Education. Chuck has moved up to a Team GWRRA Rider Ed role. They re GREAT people and good friends and they ve told me they plan on remaining active in District activities. For those who don t know us, we re currently Senior Chapter Directors of D2 up in Fort Wayne, were recently the Assistant District Directors for 5 northeast Chapters, master tour riders, and the final Region D Couple of the Year. I m a Rider Course Instructor as well as an ITCP certified instructor. We ride, for now (working to get a new 2018 WHITE bike), a Pearl White 2008 GL 1800 with over 115K miles. If you ve attended any District or Region D rally s recently, you would have seen us helping out. After the GWRRA changes from late last year, one of my District Educator duties is to provide every Chapter a District Rider Education article for inclusion in your Chapter s newsletter. My plan is to send this article out to Chapter Directors no later than the last Saturday of the month. Until we get started, your Chapter may have to skip a month depending on when you publish your Chapter newsletter. Speaking of the GWRRA changes, I really like what I heard from Anita Alkire (GWRRA President) at last year s Wing Ding. She spoke passionately about GWRRA s Rider Education credentials and how rider education is crucial to the foundation to GWRRA. She also spoke about the strength of GWRRA is in the combined experiences of all our motorcycle riding/touring members. We can gain more insights from ourselves than putting the burden on one of our Chapter-mates to come up with a monthly Rider Ed topic for their gatherings and complete various reports previously required for the Chapter level. What I hope to do in subsequent newsletter articles is to give you an idea/topic/question to discuss during your monthly gatherings. My goal is to get us all to think about various riding strategies and techniques to see if they might be relevant to us and our co-riders. You may even be tempted to give the ideas a spin while preparing to ride or actually out on the road. If you have an idea for a future article, please let me know. While I ve ridden a fair amount of miles I m still relatively new to riding and use every opportunity to discuss strategies and ways to be safer on the ride. I m looking forward to your feedback and looking forward to seeing you at rally s, ride in s, Gatherings, and Rider Courses. If you have any questions or concerns related to Rider s Education, please give me a shout. My contact info is Rick Warmels 5926 County Road 64 Spencerville, IN 46788 rwarmels@mchsi.com 260.238.4148 Until next time..
