From the Baron & Baroness Unto Our Most Beloved Barony, We bring you greeting and hope that you are having an excellent winter! We are very pleased to be hosting Better War Through Archery this month and would like to thank the volunteers who help to make it happen in advance. We are very proud of all of you who help host the kingdom for the events that we have throughout the year. Your hospitality is known throughout the kingdom and this makes us very happy. Also, good luck to everyone who is entering the Regional Arts and Sciences Faire. As winter turns to spring, we have been your Baron and Baroness for 4 1/2 years now. In the Midrealm, Baron and Baroness has a five year term. This means that we will need to poll for Baron and Baroness this spring. Since there have been couples who have stepped forward who we think can do an excellent job in leading the group forward, We do not plan to run again. It has been a wonderful five years leading you. However, since such strong candidates have stepped forward, we feel that new ideas and energy will serve the group well. Nominations are not yet closed, though. If you would like to nominate yourself to run for Baron and/or Baroness, please speak with Katrina, our seneschal, or us. We expect the new Baron and Baroness to be invested at Simple Day in July. There will be question and answer sessions where you can, "meet the candidates" this spring. Just so that you have some idea about the requirements: You must currently be a member of the SCA and must maintain that membership throughout the five year term. You must send a written report to the new King and Queen every reign. You must attend Sternfeld business meetings as your vote is needed for quorum and the Barony's events. You will need to be able to go through the Baronial roster to identify members of the group who need to be given baronial awards as well as write award recommendations for kingdom level awards for deserving souls. In service, Baroness Moira and Baron Torquil 4

From the Seneschal Greetings! Our next couple of months are going active! A polling will be conducted to provide counsel to the Crown on choosing a new Baron/Baroness for the Barony of Sternfeld. This will tentatively take place in the month of May. Non member polls will be available on the Middle Kingdom Seneschals website. If you are interested in pursuing the rolls of Baron and/or Baroness, please see Their Excellencies and I. The deadline for all interested is March 29th. There will be a Meet and Greet with the candidates in April. Kat From the Chronicler Greetings from your Chronicler. Happy Valentine s Day, all! We re gearing up for Better War Through Archery and eagerly anticipating the spring. Well, all except my husband, who wants one more good snow. I don t mind the white stuff, either, but I am looking forward to seeing the buds on the trees. As promised, the Althing notes are in this issue. I ll put them in the March issue, as well, just in case we need them. I know we have several votes for the bylaws, so we ll keep you posted. YIS, Lady Brigide Rois von Metten 5

From the webminister Buon Giorno, We have a website. YIS, Lord Antonio Bellini From the Minister of Youth To all the populous. I hope everyone has a Happy Valentine's Day. Enjoy the day with friends, loved ones and be kind to animals! I've had a few too many weeks going stir crazy in my house. How about you? Stay warm any safe way you can with this cold weather and remember, the day after Valentine's Day is a great way to stock up for chocolate until Easter!!! Yeah chocolate! Supposedly this round of plague called the flu is rampant. If you live in our household, we're stocked up on soup, apples, onions and lots of limes. Get a lot of rest and much needed vitamin C. Especially for those kiddos who go out into the cold waiting for the buses to eventually show up dealing with the sporadic snowfall we're having. I've found lots of warmth inside a nice clean-ish house keeps the bugs away, but especially less contact with the masses. I know many of you can't avoid going out among the public, but please remember to wash your hands and to stop shaking hands. For that matter, let's start bowing again, who said introductions need to be so intimate. For the public's health and safety, let's start a new tradition, bowing!!! It's so less harmful. Onto Better War Through Archery and plans that shall become known to the members of Children's Point staff. There will be a reward for Viking White Stuff Bear; if she is found on site, a prize will be given. Again, game at BTWA, keep warm and somebody please tell me when this winter will be over!!!! Lady Emme Foster of Whickam "Tribuo quod vos mos suscipio" ~ Give and you will receive 6

From the Archery Captain We still consistently average 14-18 people each week; however, we had 20 adults and 4 children two of them were old enough to do a little bit of shooting on January 16th! Better War through Archery is February 16-17, 2013. We will have individual and team competition, youth competition, and participation in the Winter Challenge. Duchess Elina will conduct the Baronial Archery Championship. Also, just for fun, we will have a friendly competition between the heavy fighters and the fencers since many of them do not have the opportunity to participate on the archery field. The range opens at 9:30, and the competition shoots will begin at 10:15. If you want to compete, be on the range on time! The Baronial Archery Championship is scheduled to start at 11:45. The Youth competition will also begin at 11:45. Feel free to contact me at archery@sternfeld.org to express your interest in archery or ask questions. Wednesday practices are from 7 to 9 PM. All are welcome to join us! Pandus planto populus mico! Hlaford Eadric of Grenefelda 7

In attendance: 19 Gentles January Business Meeting Minutes Baronial Report - Reminder that Emil's funeral is tomorrow (Friday). Nothing else to report at this time. Great Offices: Seneschal - About to sign a new contract with Krannert for 2013. Looking at helping them by doing an Art in the Park program, as discussed at the November Business Meeting. Kat will meet with the Park on the 29th of January to discuss this. We are starting the process for Baronial Polling. Anyone interested should contact Kat or their Excellencies. The polling is tentatively set for Mid-April. There will be a meet-and-greet to get to know the candidates. Each candidate will need proof of membership and a letter of intent. Herald - The Herald sent a deputy. We received money at the Althing to get heralds tabards. Colette is now the Deputy Herald, she'll be doing court, while he's doing bookwork. Chronicler - Still working on January's issue. Shooting for the 2nd Tuesday of each month to publish. Exchequer - The exchequer is ill (get well soon ~ ed), but sent a deputy. 2012 Reports were passed out. We have over $13,000 in the bank. Domesday has been completed and balanced correctly (yay!). Marshals: Heavy - Practice is happening! We've had several new people recently. Fence - Fencing is going well. Throw-downs have been well attended. MITs reminded that quarterly report is due by the end of February. Archery - Attendance is steady, averaging between 14-18 people, with some variety. There were 22 at the most recent practice. There were five visitors from Mynned Seren. Better War Range schedule is set and individual/team shoots have been planned. Duchess Elena will be running the Baronial Championship. Youth - Practice hasn't been happening lately. Equestrian - We have an Equestrian Marshal in the area looking to begin offering practice. We will be amending the by-laws to add the office. We will also need to get an insurance certificate for $50 to cover the Equestrian practice. The idea passed first polling and we will get that process rolling. Information about practices and the Marshal's information will be posted on the website. Chirurgeon - Sent a deputy. Rowena got a job. (Yay!) 8

MoAS: This is Johann's last meeting as MoAS - Duncan takes over for the following month! Costumers - Met in January, looked at Turkish Books. Colette received an industrial Snap/Grommet press which she will gladly let people use. Brewers - Johann is looking to get rid of some carboys and primary fermentation containers, plus bottles. There's a brewing activity May 1st (tentative) looking for people to demo for different styles of brewing. Cooks - Prep mode for BWTA feast. Will be doing some shopping and pricing for meats and other things for the upcoming feast. Gerda did a presentation of breads that will be used for the feast at BWTA. Pickling will probably also happen this weekend at Cooks Guild. Ars Rustica - Geese are being obtained. Performance Arts - Colette has been meeting with Contra/Folk Dancers - she's also teaching English Country at Garfield Park every two months. Largesse - Has not met recently. Bardic - Performing Bardic this weekend (Saturday Night) at Daisy's. Lesser Offices: Chatelaine - If you borrowed garb to repair it, please return it, repaired or not! Minister of Youth - Quarterly report submitted. Supplies being gathered and organized. Caristonia is coming on as a deputy for this position. Property Master - We have stuff. Prize Czar - No report this month. Web Minister - Websites are up. We'll be posting a Simple Day website soon, once the Web Minister receives the information. Continuing to work on projects like the online award listings and related projects. Send me info for an event you are autocratting or a department head for! Events: Yule - We should buy 45 pounds of meat for this event in the future. All unused funds from the Yule Budget will be given to St. Timothy's for their kind willingness to allow us to use their space frequently. BWTA - February 16th. Graine is doing populace lunch. Odette is doing judges lunch. Lunch will be comped for judges and staff. Volunteers are needed. Advance troll check-ins starting at 8. Troll starts at 9. Populace space will not be provided in the main area archery area. It will be in the same area as lunch and youth point. 9

Baronial Birthday - Bids are open! There were no bids this month. Submit a bid by the Tuesday before the next business meeting. If no bids are received by February's meeting, there will not be an event. Bids need to come with a budget due to the lateness of the submission. Contact Kat with questions. Simple Day - Various volunteers are needed. Greyhound coursing will happen. Lunch, feast, royalty liaison, etc. have been taken care of. Cleanup crew lead (and crew) is still needed. Demo - January 29th, there will be a home school group at fighter practice. Something like four families will be present - would be nice if some could come early with looking at A&S and fighting plus color. We are encouraging all to come in garb. If you have an A&S activity you'd like to demo, let Kat know. Spinning is already represented, but other options will be appreciated. Overall: 10 Althing Meeting Minutes Drafts of changes to the Baronial Bylaws and Baronial Financial policy were distributed. A copy of these policies will be edited with changes discussed at this meeting - these revised documents will be posted to the website and to the Sternfeld list, as well in the Sternfeld Star. These policy changes will be voted on at the next two business meetings, so there is opportunity to suggest changes between this meeting and the next two business meetings. Polling on the finalized versions of these documents is planned for December and January. Financial Policy: Our Exchequer (Elisabetta) presented the Financial Policy for the Barony. Discussion occurred regarding how the signatories (other than the Exchequer, Seneschal, and Regional Exchequer) are changed out. Do they need to be changed regularly? What are the criteria? The outgoing Exchequer will not be retained as a signatory. After discussion it was decided that an announcements page will be made on the website to post weekly announcements, including any financial decisions over $100, in addition to announcing them at a weekly meeting. When possible, these financial decisions will be published in the Star as well.

Article 7 Section 7.05 was proposed to be stricken from the Bylaws, as the same policy is covered in the financial policy. Proposed wording was discussed. (This is Financial Policy 2e.) Wording will be drafted. There is a form for all reimbursements or advances. It will be made available via the website along with other financial policies and forms. Bylaws Revisions: Throughout the bylaws, wherever the Star is mentioned as a place to publish information, the website will be added as well. Additionally, locations in the bylaws where financial policies are dictated will be removed, with a reference to the Financial Policies document. (Article VI) Champions: Strike the phrase "No Champion may compete to succeed him or herself." from Section 6.02. Strike the phrase ", once in the month preceding the Baronial Birthday and once in the month preceding the Baronial Holiday Court." from Section 6.03 This is to allow flexibility in scheduling the changes of champions. Strike the same phrase in the previous item from 6.04 as well. Strike the phrase "at the Better War Through Archery event, or another event chosen by the Coronet," from 6.05. (The preceding 3 changes are for the same reason.) Change "according to the A&S criteria of the Middle Kingdom and the wishes of the Coronet." to "according to the wishes of the Coronet." from 6.06. Also change 6.06 to remove "and judged at the Baronial Birthday". Also change 6.06 to remove "and the current A&S Champion" and replace with "and others invited by the Coronet." (Article VII) Events: Discussion of how to word and or change 7.01 "The Barony shall hold a maximum of three (3) large events per calendar year." A rewording is due from the people working on it by December 13th. 7.01.a Strike "1st quarter of the year" to remove the required date range to allow it to happen at other times when needed. 7.01.c Strike that item entirely. It's an optional event. 7.01.c.i Strike entirely. 7.01.c.ii Strike entirely - due to more hotels having been built around Indianapolis, the Indy 500 makes it no longer a problem to hold events that weekend. 11

2013 Officer Budgets: Were passed on first polling (will poll again at December 2012 Business Meeting). As follows: $300.00 Archery $25.00 Chatelaine $50.00 Chirurgeon $150.00 Chronicler $150.00 Coronet $25.00 Exchequer $150.00 Herald $25.00 Knight's Marshal $100.00 MOAS $25.00 MoY $500.00 Prize Czar $500.00 Property $25.00 Fencing Marshal $100.00 Seneschal $100.00 Youth Marshal $2,225.00 TOTAL These funds are funds that are pre-approved for spending by the officer/deputies in question without further approval. Any projects or money outside this budget that must be spent can be passed via pollings at Business Meetings. Baronial Inventory: Reminder. If you have stuff and it belongs to the Barony. Please send a complete list of the individual items you have to the Exchequer BEFORE December 31st. The sooner the better. 12

TIDBITS Special notice that there will be no Fighter Practice on December 25 th or January 1 st. Practice will resume as normal January 8 th. Also, I hear that we have a brand-new web interface for Baronial award submissions too! Visit http://www.midrealm.org/sternfeld/awards.php to send recommendations straight to Their Excellencies from the ease of your own home. Seriously, the Baron and Baroness really want to reward people for their service to Sternfeld. But they need your recommendations. Get them in now for the Try Something New event. We now have two count them, 2! Bardic circles! One is a performance-based Bardic run by Floriana/Daisy. Look for postings on the Sternfeld Yahoo! Group. The other Bardic circle is a Learning Bardic, where people gather to share information/music/stories and learn from each other. Those are set on the same Sunday of every other Cook s Guild (the next one will be in December). Again, keep your eyes on the Sternfeld Yahoo! Group for more details. Speaking of Learning Bardic, there is a special session December 16 at Grainne s house. Cook s Guild will be discussing traditions for the Yuletide season, and Bardic will include singing carols and telling stories related to this festive time of year. Bring a dish to share, a story to tell, and/or a song to sing. Festivities start at 3 and go until 8 pm. Pregnancy watch: I saw at Better War that Countess Runa is due soon. Apparently Kabiri s lady wife is also expecting. Our fertility is once again proving true! 13
